He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

yea, he might have had a good start and might get better when lampard is back, but i think i'm done with him for now. i'll get someone like bale in and add a.cole or vidic to my defence.

Should I buy Davies or Elmander? Money is not an issue, as I will sell him when Bent is fit.

I was thinking Elmander, until I noticed he had scored all his goals away this season. They have 3 easy home fixtures coming up and Davies is a BP magnet and scores at home.

Or should I just get Gyan and keep him even when Bent is back?

I just wanted to get Elmo out to be honest and didn't see many prospects. Can't really be bothered with my defence anymore as I always get it wrong so at least now I can just play Kolarov and Toure every week regardless.

Probably, given how mancini sets up his team. If I was a Man city fan I would be seriously pissed. All that dosh and talent and he plays so defensively at home. Then you're playing out yet another magnifecently boring draw and pull off 1 of the attackers for Bloody Gareth Barry. What a crock

listen people the best are the ones that trust their players and keep them. they dont get a player out as soon as he has had 2-3 bad weeks. i might add that malouda is also coming back from injury so will obviuosly not be at his best. but i know that he will come good, which is why i am keeping him. as soon as you kick him out he wont come back in with that price. 😐

Mate loads of people will be dropping him after today. His price will come down. You wouldn't want a player at 5.7 in your team that has scored as little as malouda in the last 8 weeks let alone 10.4.

Wake up, sell him, use the cash elsewhere.

Not doubting that he will come good. He's just not good right now and no idea when that will be. I hate having players who are not in form in my team "just in case". Sell now and buy back later. You will probably get the same price for him later on or maybe even less.

Agreed. But they won't listen. Who remembers Tim Howard getting a bonus point for a single save?

It reminds me when Eriksson chose the MOTM for the 2004 FA Cup Final and, despite being the best player being Ronaldo by a mile, good old Sven gave it to van Nistelrooy just because he scored twice.

      😕

Fabregas was anything but 'half arsed' today. Sure his passing was as good as it can be, but he tracked back very well and put in some excellent tackles in the full back area.

Sending an email about bonus points is probably the most pointless thing you can do. Unless it's a glaring error like Rafael last week, which it clearly isn't today.

We may as well all send emails asking for Drogba to get 3 BPs.

Fabs' allocation of 3 bonus points was nowhere near as bad as Downing and Albrighton being ignored by the bonus judges yesterday...

I think the judges (if that is the right word) only have a short memory span - last 20 minutes of the game probably. Hence Nani and Fletcher getting something yesterday.

Also Kaboul getting 1 bonus point - he did clear one off the line in the latter part of the game but Spurs did let in 2 goals.

Play it now. Make a list of who you want to keep from your current side. You can swap around the rest but you have to remember if you have made any profit on them 1st. Making money is an added bonus but getting a good 15 is most important. Actually you should have played it when the GW started.

I may have to swallow my pride and do:
    Arteta OUT Cahill IN
    Etherington OUT Nani In
    Hernandez out Elmander in

4 point hit- what do you reckon?

I'm suspicious of any advice you give me, especially after some of my taunting today... 😉

Actually if rooney's still out I may give hernandez one more week....

60 with the genius of Freddy P as skipper. Thank God for two Spurs midfielders and Foster...

Not a fan of the link. I dont like the idea that some people could be from my mini league! Besides, I thought we built up some trust DB 😉
