Sunderland have the cheek to expose Chelsea frailties in front of the Stamford Bridge crowd, while Arsenal record a second away win in the space of four days, as Fabregas returns to the scoresheet and the Bonus Points. Here’s Sunday’s Scout Notes…

Sunderland’s outstanding Stamford Bridge victory saw them claim their third clean sheet in their last five. They have recovered from the 5-1 mauling by Newcastle with two strong defensive performances at Spurs and Chelsea. Nedum Onuoha (5.0) will earn all the attention within the back four after his stunning solo goal, but Titus Bramble at 4.7 or Phil Bardsley at 4.3, perhaps offer better value. Craig Gordon is another serious consideration in goal with his 4.5 price tag. The fixture list certainly promotes investment in the Sunderland squad. A home encounter with an Everton side struggling for goals comes next, that’s then followed by a very decent run of opponents, if you see past the trip to Old Trafford on Boxing Day (wol WHM ful BOL mun BLP BLA).

The Black Cats’ attacking assets also deserve consideration. Asamoah Gyan returned another goal – his fourth in three league outings and will deservedly attract the most interest. His priced increased to 7.2 in the FPL overnight and he will surely see a further increase in ownership as the days pass. One factoer here – we’ve yet to see how Steve Bruce incorporates the Ghanian with Darren Bent and that will be key to the potential of both players. The England striker could be back in Sunderland colours in the next couple of weeks following a hamstring injury.

Danny Welbeck scored his first league goal for Sunderland and produced a superb display which surely cements his role in Steve Bruce’s side. Ahmed Elmohamady remains out of position as a result, but unfortunately that position is now at the end of the bench. The Egyptian seems to have little chance of breaking back into the starting lineup given Welbeck’s current form. Currently priced at 5.2 in the FPL, we can expect Elmohamady’ 20% ownership to decline in the next two Gameweeks.

Florent Malouda was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti on 57 minutes, despite looking Chelsea’s most inventive player to that point. The substitution reiterates the rotation threat posed by Salomon Kalou; a factor that’s likely to remain for the rest of the season. That, and alarming form from the early season Fantasy darling, will surely cause another avalanche of FPL sales for the Chelsea man. We examined Malouda’s current form in detail in Foch’s Knee Jerk article last night.

Tim Cahill scored his sixth goal of the season on Sunday – his fourth in seven games. Cahill’s contribution has been key as David Moyes’ side continue to struggle for a cutting edge. They have scored just 6 goals in their last 5 league games with the Aussie contributing a couple in that total. With trips to Sunderland and Chelsea in the next three, Everton won’t find it easy to add to their goal tally and that could well temper any increased interest in Cahill.

Mikel Arteta was sacrificed for Yakubu on 68 minutes as David Moyes chased the game against Arsenal. A surprising move perhaps, but one that emphasises just how disappointing the Spaniard has been of late. While he continues to dictate matters, he tends to patrol deep areas in midfield and is offering little attacking threat. The Arteta vs Tim Cahill debate is a non-argument right now – Arteta’s stock is falling by week on week.

Seamus Coleman was restored to the starting lineup and completed the 90 minutes, shifting to right-back as David Moyes went gung-ho. Coleman’s lively performance which saw him look Everton’s most likely source of creativity in the first-half, should have cemented his role for the time being. That will offer reassurance for his Fantasy owners, although Everton and Coleman may struggle to find returns at Sunderland next time out.

Cesc Fabregas notched his second goal of the season at Goodison with the obligatory 3 FPL Bonus Points following on. That return will likely see further interest in the Gunners skipper with Fabregas is currently owned by just over 10% of FPL Managers. One sidenote that has to be a consideration however – Fabregas picked up his third consecutive booking on Sunday; he is now just one yellow card away from a suspension and it’s Spurs at home next.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

take the 4 point hit but i would say u would be better off gettin rid of alex rather than konchesky as despite liverpools recent bad form they now won't play United,Arsenal,Chelsea or City til gameweek 25 the two toughest matches are spurs away and villa at home while chelsea have quite a tough run coming up and Konchesky is guarenteed a place at the minute but alex may be left out a lot of the time when ancelotti play's bosingwa or ferreira right back and plays ivanovic centre which we could see in a lot of chelsea's home matches which is where they are most likely to pick up a clean sheet

I know I'm pretty late with this...but did anyone hear Andy Gray yesterday going mental about how Sunderland beating Chelsea at home meant that the PL was the best league in the world, anywhere else it would have been a home banker but this is what makes the league so great and unpredictable?

I couldn't really follow his logic there. Don't good teams sometimes lose everywhere? Chelsea hadn't even conceded a goal at home before yesterday- that suggests to me that their home results are very predictable...they will win far more often than not.

I'm completely with you - It's poor logic. I've seen it on here as well, nothing in that result says that the league is better than any other league.

The league IS of course better than basically any other league, but it's certainly not because of the odd freak result

I don't know why it has to be a competition. After Fulham and Man U drew 2-2 this season he was saying how this made the Premier League better than the World Cup, because the game was (apparently) better than any WC game. I know he has to big it all up as part of his job, but what next?

"You'd only see a tackle like that on English soil, even though he is African!"

"What a freekick, so much better than the dinner I had at the hotel last night!"

It reminds me of a Puyol (I think) goal, where he heads it in from a corner and Clive Tyldelsey said "after all that, it's a very English goal that breaks the deadlock!".

Hahaha. Great post. Made me laugh.

Never really understood why it has to be a competition either, but then again I'm not from England so I don't completely understand the feelings they have about their league.

Then again, I don't love any other league even as half as much as the Premier League, even if I do try to watch football from all parts of the world from now and then.

I think it was just such an odd case that Chelsea has won all home games without conceding and Sunderland hadn't won away from home all season so on paper it was a banker for Chelsea.

But yeah, perhaps still a bit OTT.

When Hercules beat Barca earlier in the season 0-2 at the Nou Camp was that the best league in the world then?

Here's one to throw into the scout melting pot.

Malouda - could he become the ultimate differential, you would have thought that after the performances he ha s been putting in, people (myself included) will want to ship his rather expensive ass out of there team however have a nagging feeling that he might just come good. Will Chelsea be transformed into relegastion fodder? Absolutely not, no chance, so results have to change at some point and malouda will no doubt be involved. Will he pull a bale on us? He has the talent to surely?

Could pull a Bale, in fact quite likely too, but in the time spent waiting for that mega week you'll lose ground.

Ive always said Malouda, Cole and Drogs is way too much coverage. I offloaded Malouda some time back and that was a week or 2 longer than intended due to other transfers.

Two nice home games, so Rooney is tempting. But it might be too soon for me, I'd rather see how he settles. Might do Drogba>Torres for a bit.

Will be nice to see Rooney and RvP added to the Drog/Tevez bigname striker options, could do with some variation.

Don't be fooled by the "coverage" way of thinking Qubit.

Judge Rooney as a single player and not in relation to Nani. Do you think he'll be good then buy him regardless of Nani. I'll personally monitor the situation but I think I'll wait.

Perhaps coverage is the wrong word, i really mean with Rooney back and probably needing to find form along with Utd not currently demolishing teams (although perhaps this will change with Rooney back) id prefer not to have both

Plus who knows how his return will affect Nani's output, like you say, really needs monitoring.

Although in some ways given current results i think more of a spread is probably not an unwise thing currently (at least until the usual teams really find some form)

Yeah I understand. Getting him in would be a gamble but he obviously has the potential to score HUGE.

I'm also losing faith with Drogba. He's hailed as an essential but basically he's the priciest player in the game and he has malaria. Blah.

Ahh, now you've highlighted for me what is the biggest issue currently in fpl. Drogba is clearly not right at the moment

My plan was to swap him out for Torres (not on great form, but better fixtures and maybe coming into some form) but he might be injured now.

Dunno what is the best answer to be honest. Have even considered just ditching him for Elmander for a few games and then get him back.

Mak-Gold, it depends on your bank funds. For me, I have nearly the same front 7 as u, ie Fab, Nani, Vdv, Adams, Drog, Tevez, Odem.

I have gone with the staples in the big teams like K. Toure, A Cole & Konchesky. Playing 3 at the back, I prefer the 3 def to be guaranteed starters, so that defenders are not auto-sub in to meet the 3 def rule. Hope that helps!

Don't see anything to suggest why Hernandez would start above Berba. I think Rooney's return might be just what Berba needs, more chances, one goal, confidence back, with less onus on him to be the main man he might play with more freedom. Hernandez has had one good game in the Prem and is more likely the impact sub of the two.

I transfered out Mignolet for Krul this week who got me 7 points unless Craig Gordon brakes his arm again I can't see him getting back in the team, I have had Elmohamady since gameweek 1 and now Sunderland finally have a good run of fixtures coming up he get's dropped to the bench which is quite frustrating because i'm sure he could rack up a lot of points but i'm going too keep him for another week or two and see if he regains his place, Hernandez will only be a sub most games and is not worth having why not take a punt on Asamoah Gyan who is around the same price , and there is no need to worry about the other two they will bring in points

Has anyone actually been watching Malouda recently? How's he been playing? Thinking it's time to get rid...but with his impending replacement (VdV) not having the best of fixtures...i've got this nagging desire to keep Malouds in the anticipation his (and chelsea's) form picks up

I'd only need a 15 pointer against Brum or Newc and keeping Malouda would be worth it...?!

You have to give it to Jamsiep, he handled it better than most other "big three fans" on here usually do.

He basically wanted the whole squad and backroom staff fired, but that's a noble approach after losing 0-3 at home to Sunderland.

Heheh, he did indeed handle it well, however the precursor to it was some unbelievable levels of villainy when Utd were 2-0 down against the Villa. He put the heckles up about 20 Utd fans with the usual wum squad and talked about a casual stroll to a 6 point lead at the top. Cue an angry lynch mob awaiting his arrival after yesterdays game! Good on him though, he was here to take the hits, unlike a few gooners i could mention 😉

He surely looks athletic enough. To me it looked even yesterday as if he still has MUCH to work on though - both mentally and with his finishing - but I look forward to following him.

The rumours about him going to United have really been so persistent that I think there is something to them.

Carrick with a better engine sounds like a real player to me. Hopefully he's also more athletic, I always feel like Carrick can't really make his body do what other good inner midfielders do. He looks 'stiff'.

Ahmed Al-Muhammadi or Ahmed Elmohamady as he is registered with FL under was first nicknamed Mummy because he was listed as "Al-Muhammadi". Since he later changed it to "Elmohamady" I think it is acceptable that the nickname Elmo is used as it fits with the now correct last name of said player.

Having a few issues with my team at the moment.

Overloaded on expensive defenders, which isn't too bad if they keep clean sheets...

    Thinking:

    Tevez out - Gyan
Ivanovic out - Alcaraz/Simpson (any cheap defender)
Etherington out - Fabregas / Lampard

Probably over the next two or three GWs, so the latter sub would be dependent upon form + fitness

Glad i got rid of Drogba and Malouda a few weeks ago, seems to have been the only thing that has worked for me.

    What do you reckon..?

Elmander or Odemwingie in for Hernandez? Odem gives me enough cash to also upgrade a defender (Mummy) to Alex/Ferdinand. Elmander leaves me enough to get a 5.8 defender. I definitely need to strenghten by defence, currently have Boateng, Mummy, Faye, Jones, Williamson.

    Transfer options this week...

    a) Malouda -> Nani (no hit)
    b) Tevez & Barton -> Nani & Elmander (4 point hit)
    c) Malouda & Tevez -> Nani & Rooney (4 point hit)
    d) Something involving getting rid of Gareth Bale]

    Thoughts?

      A. Possibly Tevez to Rooney next week if Rooney is playing well and Tevez not.

Will Fabregas get a yellow card against Spurs and lead him to miss Aston Villa match?
