With no other team in the top four winning last weekend, Arsenal made ground on their main rivals with a hard-earned 2-1 win at Goodison Park to end Everton’s six match unbeaten run and sit just two points off the summit.

Arsene Wenger’s recent comments that Cesc Fabregas is approaching full fitness were perhaps verified as the captain grabbed the Gunners second goal, but Wenger’s decision to replace Jack Wilshere with Denilson for the second half was fundamental not just in allowing the visitors to play further forward in the middle of the park, but in giving Fabregas the platform to attack.

Commenting on the half-time swap after the game, Wenger explained:

“I wanted a second holding player to win the second balls from the headers and I thought Wilshere looked a bit tired today.”

Analysing the performance of both players, though, it would seem the Brazilian offered a lot more than just that.

As the first chalkboard above shows, Wilshere made 43% of his passes in the Everton half and 31% in his own defensive third of the pitch. Denilson’s arrival after half time pushed Arsenal forward, however, with 69% of his passes made in the Everton half and just 6% in his own defensive third.

The influence in this substitution can be seen in Everton’s own half time change, where Jack Rodwell replaced Johnny Heitinga. Their passing chalkboards were the polar opposite of the above Arsenal ones, a result of Denilson’s introduction.

Whereas Heitinga foraged forward in the first forty-five, making 54% of his passes in the Gunners half, Rodwell was a lot more defensive, managing only 31% of his passes in outside of his own half, with none at all in his opponent’s final third, as Arsenal seized control of the crucial midfield area.

The following Arsenal “Average Position” map from the Goodison Park game shows how far forward Denilson (15) played compared to Wilshire (19). Interestingly, Marouanne Chamakh (29) played deeper overall than Fabregas (4), such is his willingness to drop back and graft for the cause. Arsenal have won more games and have more points on the road than any other team in the Premier League and Chamakh’s unselfish game has been pivotal to their recent performances away from the Emirates.

Although neither Wilshere or Denilson will offer any potentially decent Fantasy returns, it is their knock-on effect on the team shape and fluidity that could determine substantial hauls from others. Sunday, certainly, showed Denilson offered a better balance against David Moyes’ side as a holding midfielder than the young Englishman. One further pointer on the Denilson substitution is summed up by the number of shots Fabregas managed on Sunday. The second forty-five saw Cesc manage two shots at goal plus one blocked shot. In the first half, with Wilshere part of the Gunners engine room, Fabregas didn’t manage a single attempt on goal.

Ok following on from my earlier stats for kolorov

Here are those for Boetang , bear in mind these are for bundasliga whereas kolarov was in italy

    26 1 0 1 20 7 31 22 4 1
    14 7 0 2 9 2 23 11 7 1

So 40 appearances not a single goal only 3 assists 11 yellows and 2 reds

Clearly out of the two Kolarovs stats are much the better , with 6 points for a defenders goal assuming three a season Kolarov should outscore boatang by at least 18 points , throw in another six for a couple of assists and probably an extra 6 in bonus points mean olarov is probably thirty points better than boatang

Am i good or what 🙂

hey guys im new here and i've been following the comments and the updates which hopefully will help me for this gameweek. i've already made 3 transfers this week and im going with a 3-4-3...i may go for a 4-4-2 nxt week. ideas?

    Hart
Williamson, ridgewell, kolarov (kyrgiakos on bench)

bale, adam, VDV, nani (nasri on bench)

    elmander, drogba, carroll

    suggestions?

Who is your 5th defender? Too much money spread out back there imo. Also, doubling down on Tott mid can backfire if they have an off week, as they have after champions league matches. Nasri on the bench is not a good sign either. That much money there robs you of cash on the field. Consider pulling in a cheaper mid like Albrighton who can sub in nicely in a pinch or with good fixtures but not take up much that could be used elsewhere.

Gotta split - good luck mate.

Forgot to note, re the spread out money in the back, consider 1 expensive player (2 at most) to anchor a team of rotating cheaper defenders. Just some thoughts.

i picked up a lame defender that dusnt get any playing time for as cheap as i cud get so i dont really have an option there haha cause this is my first time playing fantasy so i didnt even realize that. Ok so do u think i shud drop bale or vdv? and in the back i had ashley cole but after chelsea's recent form i dropped him. i also dropped elmo for ridgewell. also, i had nasri in the last few weeks but his numbers have been terrible, so i decided to bench him so i wont have to take another 4 point hit. what do u suggest i do in the nxt few weeks? Maybe anchor with vidic, drop bale, pick up nzogbia or malouda (if he finds his form), and keep a 3-4-3 or what?

If you've already burned points to make the changes, sit tight this week and see how it turns out. One other note, if you have a solid player who is questionable to start (eg. VDV last week), include him in your starting 11. If he starts, you're in good shape, if he doesn't, he will be automatically subbed anyway. Can backfire in some instances where a player comes in for a few minutes at the end of the game. But with the top players like VDV, if they can play they usually start. DON'T do this with someone coming off injury, like Lampard. They will sometimes come on late to test fitness.

          Elmander - no.
          Malouda - no.
          Doyle - no.

It depends on how many people transfer Nani in before 0100hrs GMT tonight. Possible, should be able to tell closer to the time.

Basically on the rises tab if some one reaches 100% he is likely to rise in price and if some one is approaching 100% on falls his price is likely to fail.

Its not guaranteed to work, especially with protected players

Lee or Jarvis for the next 6 weeks.

    Plan to do
    Alex -> Vidic
    Etherington -> Lee / Jarvis.

    Team
    Foster (Carson)
    Konchesky, Jara, Enrique, Coleman, Alex
    Fab, Nani, Arteta, Cahil, Etherington
    Drog, Carroll, Davies

tks, but tempted to give Arteta one last try (losing trade I know), but sun, WBA. Not too high to get bale, VDV as spurs have tough fixtures. So not sure what to do of cash, if I transfer ARteta out. Etherington has tough fixtures and will be anyways on bench

Heres the Stats of Kolorovs last two seasons against the stats of Cashleys last two seasons.
I think we can say the clean sheet chances of Kolorov are as high as Cashleys and considering Cashley played for such a dominent attacking team his stats seem rather poor.

Kolarov 55 appearances 5 goals five assists 11 yellows 2 reds

    ?????? 60 appearances 5 goals three assists 9 yellows 0 reds

Cole has 8 clean sheets and 3 assists already this season. As well as 9 bonus points.

Kolarov is unproven in the EPL.

      Hi Triggerlips,

Not sure where you're getting the stats from. Statbunker.com has Kolarov with 6 league goals, 7 in all comps and 2 assists.

I think all those stats show is that Cashley is overrated 🙂

Seriously though, Cole never scores, last season was an aberration. And just because Kolarov has scored the occasional spectacular one, doesn't make him a great prospect. Cole's bps are not so much for his attacking potential as for his work rate and defensive solidity, things that it's harder to get stats on for Kolarov.

If Kolarov is to prove his Fantasy worth it will be as a defender primarily. City seem to be developing a knack for clean sheets, but the big question is rotation: Boateng, Bridge, Zabaleta and Lescott can all play LB.

So 8 goals, 7 of which are spectacular going by youtube, and 7 assists. It's good, but not good enough to guarantee a start every week when fit.
