Arsenal’s miserable defeat to Braga was compounded by the hamstring injury to Cesc Fabregas which is set to sideline the mercurial playmaker and Fantasy favourite for yet another spell. The 2-0 defeat left Wenger’s side staring at the possibility of Champions League elimination, while over Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were far from convincing but thankfully disposed of Zilina without fuss or casualties….

Wenger’s much-changed lineup in Portugal saw Fabregas start in a midfield that also included Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere – all players that have been rotated in the Gunners starting XI of late. Nicklas Bendtner earned an opportunity as the lone striker, while at the back Wenger brought in Johan Djourou to partner Sebastien Squillaci. Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs took up the full-back positions.

In terms of the impact on Arsenal’s Fantasy prospects, while the defeat will do little for their confidence, it was of course the injury to Fabregas which will resonate through to us Fantasy Managers. Wenger’s decision to start his skipper, a doubt with his hamstring injury before the game, backfired massively; the Arsenal boss at least acknowledged as much in his post-match comments

“As for Cesc, it’s a hamstring injury on the other leg [to that which has troubled him this season]. It’s hard to say how long he’ll be out for. He’ll definitely miss the weekend – we will have to assess [him] tomorrow. It could be two to three weeks…It is very disappointing because I had a hesitation to play him before the match started. I took the gamble and it back-fired on us.”

It seems likely that Wenger will likely be cautious with his skipper from this point on. He will surely want to avoid another recurrence and that could well prolong the absence. We’ve seen in the past how Arsenal’s injuries can stretch out in their duration, regardless of the optimistic updates presented by Wenger so perhaps around a three week absence seems the most likely outcome.

The responsibility on Samir Nasri, his second-half replacement last night, will now increase and he provides the obvious alternative for Fabregas owners looking to keep faith with the Gunners midfield. The likes of Wilshere, Walcott and Bendtner will come out of the game with little credit, while Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin will surely slot into the weekend lineup at Villa Park having been rested in last night’s game. Like Nasri, they will now be expected to step up to help Arsenal regain momentum in the absence of Fabregas.

As a final sidenote, the medial ligament strain suffered by Emmanuel Eboue in last night’s game will likely keep him out of contention for a long spell – that will cement Bacary Sagna’s start and make him less of a rotation risk around Champions League matches.

Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Zilina was far from plain sailing, but in contrast to Arsenal, they will have been pleased with their night’s work given their run of league form.

Carlo Ancelotti started with an inexperienced side, handing opportunities to the likes of Ross Turnbull in goal and Jefrrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt in the back four, Josh McEachran in midfield and Gael Kakuta up front. There was a smattering of experience around them however as Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba both started. Daniel Sturridge also earned a start and he looked the most likely before he eventually fired Chelsea’s equaliser early in the second-half. Ultimately it was Drogba and Malouda were to combine to win the game. Starting in a midfield role once again, Malouda’s winner was his first goal in seven games in all competitions.

Saturday’s trip to Newcastle is likely to see Mikel come back into the midfield, while Alex will surely return to partner Bran Ivanovic at the back with Ashley Cole returning at left-back. The likes of Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka, both used as subs last night, would also look well placed for starts. That would seem likely to see Malouda take up a midfield role once again with Yuri Zhirkov presumably still an injury doubt. Josh McEachran, impressive in last night’s game, drawing praise from Ancelotti, he is an option here but is likely to figure from the bench again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lovely stuff. I'm personally holding tight with Fabregas. I can't bare the thought of re-shuffling again to bring him in. I'm midway through sorting my defence and will continue to focus on that for now.

Anyone else just planning to ride it out, even if he's off for a couple of weeks?

I'll wait and see this week.

I have a good enough MF and front 4 that I can afford to keep Fabs and bench him. I still have VdV, Nani, N'Zogbia and Bale plus Carroll, K Davies and Tevez.

If he's declared out longer than 3 weeks then I'll probably look at replacing. I would be wary about any other Arsenal players though.

I was thinking of keeping Fabs, but having read this article I'm now considering taking a hit to bring Nasri in.

Too bad for me I was knocked out of the cup in the previous round. I would have been the top scorer in the quarter finals. But that's the way it goes sometimes.

I'm not taking a hit this week as I can still field a very good front 7.

I'm actually tempted to ride this one out as I will only want Fabs back when he's fit again. I'm more likely to replace Bale next week as there are good cheaper options that will allow me to keep 3-4-3 and still have some spare cash.

If you look at my front 8 I'd have to bench one of them anyway so I don't see what replacing Fabs would do for me. Other than give me a problem trying to get him back.

back from a long FFS holiday, which is reflected in my FPL performance over the same period.

disregarding the fixtures for a moment, fabregas' absence means that nasri will return to his preferred (and more prolific) role in the hole behind the front line.

i would say that it doesn't make any sense to hold on to fabregas (for most, transferring him out won't cost more than 0.1 in team value) when you can bring in nasri for 4.4 million less and then use that 4.4 to fix other problem areas. as above, nasri may be one of the best options in the meantime, anyways.

surely Fabregas->Cahill is the best move (unless you go cheaper, to fund Tevez - I wont since Im happy with Elmander, Carroll and Drog)?

I know its shortish term, but home games agaisnt west brom and wigan, and then Cahill->Nasri thereafter.

Arsenal have very tough fixtures in the next 3 gameweeks - surely get Fabregas back thereafter, or Nasri if Fab isnt fit...

Stuff it, I might as well just leave Fabregas in for this week. I already have a decent enough starting front 7 and was having issues as to who to bench. Next week we will know more on his injury and how good/not good Tevez/Balotelli/Other midfield options (If any). Now off to school.

      Same position I'm taking, Greghammer.

Now it solves my problem of who to bench this week. Fabs now on the bench and Bale back in my starting XI.

Unless another one of my mids or strikers gets injured this week I'm inclined to just keep Fabs now and bench him until if returns.

My plan next week was to downgrade Bale and upgrade Williamson and at the moment that still appears to be the better move than replacing Fabs and still having to bench one of my mids since I'm going to be starting all 3 of my strikers every week anyway.

I'll only want Fabs back once he's ready to return anyway. If he's back in 3 weeks time then I don't see the point in taking a hit to get rid of him and probaly another one to get him back again.

Actually, Malouda is the only person I'd take Fabs out for if I was going to sell Fabs right now, so I think that's a good shout.

Cahill is also a good shout as he's probably off to the Asian Cup the same time Fabs is probably going to return. However I find it hard to believe that most managers would bank the £3m difference and not spend it somewhere else.

I missed any chat on here last night, but are we thinking that Ferreira playing last night means Bosingwa should play at the weekend?

Wenger should have sold the little runt. Cashed in and let Barca have the headache with his injuries.

Suppose some would think twice what with Le Prof's mega rotation ways and criminally negligent tactics.

Any latest news on Alex's surgery? i.e. if they're postponing it until the New Year, or the summer?

Hang on, if we are talking mid to long term shouldn't we be weary of Chung Yong Lee due to the Asia Cup?

Asian Cup only in Jan 2011 with players joining their teams in later Dec.

If I had Lee i would only want him for gw 15-19 anyway. Gw 19 is 26 Dec, so who knows Lee might be available.

Asian cup, interesting! only trouble with Nolan is lack of assists.

      +1
At least now we can't leave any big points from a midfielder/forward on the bench.

Anyone thinking about Pedersen? Obviously the next BBN game is awful, but after that there's a pretty smooth run of fixtures. The only concern is that he produced nothing (points wise) until recently. Any clues?

      N'Zog would be another option.

I'm leaning towards Nzog. No trust in Pedersen.

      drogba elmander carroll

already used my free transfer to do varney>elmander. my question is whether i should trasnfer fabs out for a 4 pt hit for either cahill or nasri? without the transfer i will be able to start 11 players without any hesitation but after the transfer i would have a dilemma again. so what are your opinions?

I am taking our Fabs and he isnt coming back until his form has returned this time.

The re-shuffle to bring him in is just to damaging to the team.

      Im thinking Malouda back?

      What is everyone else doing?

Malouda back doesn't sound right to me, I'm suprised people are doing that. He's slightly hinted at a possible return to form with France and last night, but his recent FPL returns have been mediocre at best. Also Chelsea's fixtures are pretty stiff until GW20, and they aren't in the best of form in the Prem. There are surely better choices right now.

With France? He was just a though, certainly not confirmed. Also looking at Silva, which would also free up cash to imrove my sh*te defence.
