Arsenal’s miserable defeat to Braga was compounded by the hamstring injury to Cesc Fabregas which is set to sideline the mercurial playmaker and Fantasy favourite for yet another spell. The 2-0 defeat left Wenger’s side staring at the possibility of Champions League elimination, while over Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were far from convincing but thankfully disposed of Zilina without fuss or casualties….

Wenger’s much-changed lineup in Portugal saw Fabregas start in a midfield that also included Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere – all players that have been rotated in the Gunners starting XI of late. Nicklas Bendtner earned an opportunity as the lone striker, while at the back Wenger brought in Johan Djourou to partner Sebastien Squillaci. Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs took up the full-back positions.

In terms of the impact on Arsenal’s Fantasy prospects, while the defeat will do little for their confidence, it was of course the injury to Fabregas which will resonate through to us Fantasy Managers. Wenger’s decision to start his skipper, a doubt with his hamstring injury before the game, backfired massively; the Arsenal boss at least acknowledged as much in his post-match comments

“As for Cesc, it’s a hamstring injury on the other leg [to that which has troubled him this season]. It’s hard to say how long he’ll be out for. He’ll definitely miss the weekend – we will have to assess [him] tomorrow. It could be two to three weeks…It is very disappointing because I had a hesitation to play him before the match started. I took the gamble and it back-fired on us.”

It seems likely that Wenger will likely be cautious with his skipper from this point on. He will surely want to avoid another recurrence and that could well prolong the absence. We’ve seen in the past how Arsenal’s injuries can stretch out in their duration, regardless of the optimistic updates presented by Wenger so perhaps around a three week absence seems the most likely outcome.

The responsibility on Samir Nasri, his second-half replacement last night, will now increase and he provides the obvious alternative for Fabregas owners looking to keep faith with the Gunners midfield. The likes of Wilshere, Walcott and Bendtner will come out of the game with little credit, while Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin will surely slot into the weekend lineup at Villa Park having been rested in last night’s game. Like Nasri, they will now be expected to step up to help Arsenal regain momentum in the absence of Fabregas.

As a final sidenote, the medial ligament strain suffered by Emmanuel Eboue in last night’s game will likely keep him out of contention for a long spell – that will cement Bacary Sagna’s start and make him less of a rotation risk around Champions League matches.

Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Zilina was far from plain sailing, but in contrast to Arsenal, they will have been pleased with their night’s work given their run of league form.

Carlo Ancelotti started with an inexperienced side, handing opportunities to the likes of Ross Turnbull in goal and Jefrrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt in the back four, Josh McEachran in midfield and Gael Kakuta up front. There was a smattering of experience around them however as Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba both started. Daniel Sturridge also earned a start and he looked the most likely before he eventually fired Chelsea’s equaliser early in the second-half. Ultimately it was Drogba and Malouda were to combine to win the game. Starting in a midfield role once again, Malouda’s winner was his first goal in seven games in all competitions.

Saturday’s trip to Newcastle is likely to see Mikel come back into the midfield, while Alex will surely return to partner Bran Ivanovic at the back with Ashley Cole returning at left-back. The likes of Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka, both used as subs last night, would also look well placed for starts. That would seem likely to see Malouda take up a midfield role once again with Yuri Zhirkov presumably still an injury doubt. Josh McEachran, impressive in last night’s game, drawing praise from Ancelotti, he is an option here but is likely to figure from the bench again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Depends on your bench. If you think there are players out there who will return more than 4pts than whoever you're going to need to play instead of Fabs, then yes it's worth it.

Why would you need to, have your already made a transfer? If thats the case it would all depend on the rest of your team.

    Hi all
I personally think with the Fab injury the only person worth transferring in is Cahill, Arsenal have some tough fixtures up until the new year. By time if Fab is fit, the 2nd wildcard will be in place so theres no need to be in panic over how to reshuffle him in. Other choices are Malouda, Gamst Pedersen, Etherington.

Though i feel the major deciding factor is a forward line
How can you get in Drogba, Tevez, Carroll, Elmander in?

For this week I feel it should be Drogba, Elmander and Tevez.
The week after it should be Tevez, Drogba, Carroll
The week after that should be Tevez, Drogba, Elmander

I agree. I bought Cahill last night for Cesc.

Had planned on keeping the money aside to do Cahill->Cesc when he is back, but ur right, it may be better just to wait until the second wildcard.

I am quite disciplined at this kind of thing 🙂

If he is out for months, and I decide to wait until the wildcard to get him back in, then maybe Ill end up using the money.

The only guy worth spending the cash on is Tevez. So maybe in a few weeks Ill do Cahill->Nasri and then Elmander->Tevez (but only after Cahill leaves for Oz, and Elmander's good fixtures end)

Fabs will drop in value and Wenger will probably ease him back slowly. Best ship out Fabregas for Bale/Arteta/Etherington/Young/Adam or even Malouda

      Otherwise its
      Gyan out for Carroll
      or
      Bosingwa out for Baines

As it stands, this is the only team option I got (all subs AWOL):

        Hart (Foster)
        Konchesky | Vidic | Jones | Coleman
        VdV | Nani | Jarvis
        Drogba | Carroll | Elmander
Sub: Fabregas | Barton | Alcaraz

Funny how a team can look good one week and the next look like a pile of poo.

What would your advice be with this team (and no I don't have my wildcard)?

My worry is with my defence:
            Konchesky - Away at Spurs
Jones - Away at Man U
            Coleman - Lack of minutes

Also if VdV really is a doubt for the game tonight it is worrying for me in regards to the weekend games as I have no sub to replace him.

Jones agreed isn't gonna get you naff all this week but good fixtures after (3 of 4 at home I think). Likewise Konch after this GW fixtures look OK.

If you can get in Kolarov early doors I would...

Seems VDV has been doubtful every week and still managed to play and score well!

konchesky and jones will concede, but what can you do? Its not worth transferring them out for a hit, and you may as well keep Jones for BBurns nicer fixtures. If you have no choice but to play them this week, then just bite the bullet and pray for a miraculous goal/assist/clean sheet. You never know.

The theory on protection is it is only given to a player when their injury status changed from red or yellow flag to no flag.

Whilst injured players price is not protected.

As Fabs already had about 50% of the Net Transfers IN (NTI) required for a rise he will need to drop a significant amount before a fall anyway. Looks like his NTI had dropped 6% today so far so a long way to go before he is even negative NTI.

        And, if so, who for?

If Fabs is out for 3 weeks then I'm certain I can find someone who will bring home those 4 points over that time and outscore Adam/Milijas/Stam over that period.

Just can't decide who it should be...

            Nasri?
            Arshavin?

For me it would be a choice between Nasri and VDV (well strictly speaking for me it would be VDV as I did that last night - but still have one free tsfr that could involve Nasri).

VDV looks capable of a moment of genius against any side and Nasri will be hogging the bonus points in Fabs absence. Though will be interesting to see how Nasri combines with RVP compared to Chamakh whose presence seems to have improved Nasri's game.

        New team (so far)

        Foster/Robinson
Ridgewell, A Cole, Baines, Huth, Coleman
VdV, Bale, Cahill, Nani, C Lee
        Tevez, Elmander, Carroll

I'd not mind Nasri or Albrighton, but I think that's a pretty good team there. What say you?

Wouldnt bring in Cole, chelsea are in horrendous form, much better off with vidic. Baines is too expensive imo when coleman is such a good option.

VdV and bale is too much when spurs have poor fixtures imo.

Hmmm. Can see an issue in the not too distant future with your midfield. Whilst Spur's fixtures harden up (though I fancy VDV against anyone and Bale against G Johnson this weekend) perhaps forcing you to ditch Bale, you will also need to ditch Cahill and Lee for the Asian Cup (not sure exact dates of this can anyone clarify?).

I would be a little concerned over a wildcard team where I can see 2/3 enforced midfield changes on the not too distant horizon.

Thanks Inalize. Wow, that could really put a spanner in the works for those players.

When they actually get called away will be crucial as well, if they are getting the squads together during the congested last wek in December then it could cause carnage.

Correct. I don't have Cahill or say Lee but if one would get someone like Lee (that might be called up for Asian Cup) I would only want him for every second game for gw 15-19 anyway.

Gw19 on 26 Dec vs WBA might be an issue with him leaving. Not the end of the world I suppose, but then one can rather get Elmander or Davies I suppose.

Yes, Man U at home is the best bet.
But Blackburn have won their last 4 games. They may pull off a shock result.
Chelsea are playing a weakened Newcastle defence that shipped 5 last week, before they had players suspended.
On the other hand, it may snow heavily in Newcastle...an FPL manager now also needs to be a weather forecaster.

I'd say a shock result is a bit too much to expect from Blackburn although I can certainly see a very tight game being played at Old Trafford on Saturday. 1-0, 2-0 tops.

Right guys I have to take out Fabs this week as I still have Barton who is suspended.

I'm pretty set on Fabs -> Cahill.

My defence and keepers are a mess though so thinking of taking a 4 point hit to use some of the money I have. I know people will say don't take a 4 point hit for a defender but if I don't then it will take weeks to sort out.

        My current backline is...

        Carson Mignolet
        Tamas Enrique Jones Konchesky Coleman

Basically... Mignolet, Enrique and Tamas have to go.

Who would you prioritise taking out this week?

do cahill this week, bite the bullet on defense, then get a stud defender or keeper, that defense is a mess TBH. Maybe ManCity Joe hart or Kolarov

It's a massive mess that's why I think 4 points this week on Van Der Sar, Kolarov, Vidic etc might be worthwhile in the long run.

Not quite yet. If still injured over the Christmas period then perhaps. Anyone notice how Scholes and Giggs tend to do well over Christmas?

Perhaps i'm reading too much into this but could be down to their unerring levels of professionalism meaning that they are tucked up in bed whilst contempories are partying overr the festive season.

        Robinson/Al-habsi

        Cole, Konchesky, Coleman, Dann, Simpson

        Fabregas, Malouda, Nani, VDV, Brunt

        Drogba, Elmander, Carroll

hoping to get some input about possible moves to make as i look to replace fabregas....

Fabs/Simpson out, Arteta or Nasri/Vidic in

Fabs/Coleman or Dann out, Cahill/Vidic in

        Fabs/Simpson out, Cahill/Kolarov in

not going to do anything till next week, if by then if fabs appears to be back the following week, i will probably hold tight. But it seems inevitable that he will need to be replaced down the line again. What say you? Yes its a repost from previous article.

          Fabs/Coleman out, Cahill/Kolarov in.

Keep Simpson he is good 3.9m bench fodder who will play every week. Colemans place at risk imo especially when Fellani is back in the fold. Kolarov on set pieces, and Cahill playing up front. Work Fab back in with the Jan wildcard by that time Cahill would of gone.

Not heard of any injury to Coleman. The worrying thing is that Everton looked better on Monday after he'd gone off, so there's a chance he may be dropped to the bench at the weekend.

Bosingwa just rested last night. Almost certain to start at the weekend.

          Can't wait till tonight.

I'll be listening to the first session on the radio. Hoping that we win the toss and bat first.

The nightmare situation is that I go to bed with England at 95-1 at lunch, and then wake up to hear Ricky Ponting reaching his century.

It's the problem of only being able to listen to the first and last bits of each day's play.

Remember the third(?) test last time around with the huge partnership and Collingwood's double century? Then it all changed around and we ended up losing. 🙁

A good start is essential. Can't remember the last time we had a good first day at the Gabba. It was probably when Douglas Jardine was captain...

Fit or not makes no odds. Aussies are a shambles. That spinner will get taken apart, his record is shocking. Eng to win 3-1. Swann man of the series. Just my opinion of course.

Not a betting man just like to voice my opinion. If we can control Ponting I reckon it will be fairy comfortable. I reckon Finn may struggle but like I said Swann is the key man.

            Swann is crucial.

At some point in the series I'm expecting an epic stand between Collingwood and Bell (300+ partnership).

He suffered at the hands of Warne (and all the Sherminator jibes) last time around, but he's looking rock solid now.

If the Aussies are to win the Ashes back, I think they need Johnson to really perform. He's their key man in my book.

Still Ponting, if he averages under 40 this series the Ashes will stay with us! But your right Johnson's bowling and lower order smashing could inflict some damage!

I am struggling a bit and behind in my mini league so considering taking a gamble of taking out Fab & Carroll for Pederson & Rooney.

It is a gamble I know but differentials are the only way to make up ground. Any thoughts?

too many gambles will likely see you fall further behind. Not sayingthey are bad moves but i think it's too early to be thinking about taking gambles to catch up - a solid team every week si the best way to make up ground.

        Thankfully i have two freebies.

Might do Fabs + Elmo > Nasri + Vidic
        Good moves?

But then i keep thinking maybe i should take a punt on RVP instead, it's really what i want to do, but the only forward i could replace this week would be Carroll really (but i won't - in for the season for me). Will have to wait and get him in instead of Elmander once his fixtures dry up instead i think.

I reckon RVP will start this weekend though, wouldn't be surprised if Arsenal lined up with Nasri in Fabs' role and then
Arshavin Chamakh RVP as the front 3.
