Arsenal’s miserable defeat to Braga was compounded by the hamstring injury to Cesc Fabregas which is set to sideline the mercurial playmaker and Fantasy favourite for yet another spell. The 2-0 defeat left Wenger’s side staring at the possibility of Champions League elimination, while over Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were far from convincing but thankfully disposed of Zilina without fuss or casualties….

Wenger’s much-changed lineup in Portugal saw Fabregas start in a midfield that also included Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere – all players that have been rotated in the Gunners starting XI of late. Nicklas Bendtner earned an opportunity as the lone striker, while at the back Wenger brought in Johan Djourou to partner Sebastien Squillaci. Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs took up the full-back positions.

In terms of the impact on Arsenal’s Fantasy prospects, while the defeat will do little for their confidence, it was of course the injury to Fabregas which will resonate through to us Fantasy Managers. Wenger’s decision to start his skipper, a doubt with his hamstring injury before the game, backfired massively; the Arsenal boss at least acknowledged as much in his post-match comments

“As for Cesc, it’s a hamstring injury on the other leg [to that which has troubled him this season]. It’s hard to say how long he’ll be out for. He’ll definitely miss the weekend – we will have to assess [him] tomorrow. It could be two to three weeks…It is very disappointing because I had a hesitation to play him before the match started. I took the gamble and it back-fired on us.”

It seems likely that Wenger will likely be cautious with his skipper from this point on. He will surely want to avoid another recurrence and that could well prolong the absence. We’ve seen in the past how Arsenal’s injuries can stretch out in their duration, regardless of the optimistic updates presented by Wenger so perhaps around a three week absence seems the most likely outcome.

The responsibility on Samir Nasri, his second-half replacement last night, will now increase and he provides the obvious alternative for Fabregas owners looking to keep faith with the Gunners midfield. The likes of Wilshere, Walcott and Bendtner will come out of the game with little credit, while Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin will surely slot into the weekend lineup at Villa Park having been rested in last night’s game. Like Nasri, they will now be expected to step up to help Arsenal regain momentum in the absence of Fabregas.

As a final sidenote, the medial ligament strain suffered by Emmanuel Eboue in last night’s game will likely keep him out of contention for a long spell – that will cement Bacary Sagna’s start and make him less of a rotation risk around Champions League matches.

Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Zilina was far from plain sailing, but in contrast to Arsenal, they will have been pleased with their night’s work given their run of league form.

Carlo Ancelotti started with an inexperienced side, handing opportunities to the likes of Ross Turnbull in goal and Jefrrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt in the back four, Josh McEachran in midfield and Gael Kakuta up front. There was a smattering of experience around them however as Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba both started. Daniel Sturridge also earned a start and he looked the most likely before he eventually fired Chelsea’s equaliser early in the second-half. Ultimately it was Drogba and Malouda were to combine to win the game. Starting in a midfield role once again, Malouda’s winner was his first goal in seven games in all competitions.

Saturday’s trip to Newcastle is likely to see Mikel come back into the midfield, while Alex will surely return to partner Bran Ivanovic at the back with Ashley Cole returning at left-back. The likes of Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka, both used as subs last night, would also look well placed for starts. That would seem likely to see Malouda take up a midfield role once again with Yuri Zhirkov presumably still an injury doubt. Josh McEachran, impressive in last night’s game, drawing praise from Ancelotti, he is an option here but is likely to figure from the bench again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I don't think you need to sell Fabs just yet.

If you want to strengthen your squad, maybe sign Vidic for Crainey as there's a risk that Coleman won't start at the weekend.

    Konchesky, Adam, Stam?

With Fabs out, I may have to start one of them.

I'm liking Liverpools fixtures for the next 5-7 weeks, so i would look at:

      Konchesky in for Alcaraz, and;

maybe Torres in for drogbra if your getting fed up with him.

Ok to switch the armband from Ronaldo(18 pts.) to Eto'o in UCL fantasy,or is it too greedy?I think Eto'o can quite easily score a brace tonight, eclipsing Ronaldo's score by at least 1 point, but I don't know,on the last matchday I switched the armband from Messi(12) to Ronaldo(4) and it bit me in the arse.

Can't decide whether to take a 8 point hit and change a defender/fabs/forward. Or just make 2 changes and get rid of Elmo and Fab and leave the money for when hes back.

The second option is what I did last time, made sure my team was set up to get him in BOTH times he's previously been injured.

This time it seems like that isn't really helping me much. If he's out for 3 weeks I can't see him being rushed back like last time. Surely Wenger has learnt his lesson.

I'm thinking the same, i reckon i'm gonna use the money to get Vidic but try and save up a transfer so i have 2 freebies when i want Fabs back in later on.

I'm gonna wait for news on his injury before i do anything but using the money in defence gives me a pretty solid team for the time being.

Yeah that's the problem really. It's easy enough to plan to save the transfers for his return but ultimately there will just be more injuries.

I may just leave him out now until wildcard time. Arsenal's run of fixtures aren't all that great anyway.

I already have Tevez and Drogba as well we Fabs so I can make some proper changes to my team. The main one at the moment looks like

        Elmo, Fabs, Caroll out

Vidic, Nasri (or cheaper midfielder), Rooney in.

          Hmmm

tough fixtures or not i think if Fabs is fit i'll want him in my team. Even better if lots of people don't have him.

I can't bring myself to get rid of any of my forwards at the moment so don't have to worry about that for now i think (when i can bring myself to get rid of one it will be for RVP).

it had nothing to do with rushing him back. its just retarded to play him in a game that we dont need to win, and for so long before substituting. OBVIOUSLY RVP needs game time, and obviously fabregas needs rest. Retarded

            Jamsiep post

            Folks,

If anyone is interested in playing a fantasy game for the Ashes, I’ve set up a league on the Cricinfo website. The game itself is pretty good, and basic, the only drawback is the invitation system. Rather than having a league code for people to enter, the invitations are all done by email, so if you want to take part you’ll need to receive an email from the admin – me! Instead of posting your email on here for preying eyes to see – you can if you want – drop me an email at beastlypriestly@hotmail.com (I set up the account when I was 12, hence the ridiculous name) and I’ll get back to you ASAP with an invite.

Should be good fun, and I doubt people are going to take it too seriously… Especially greghammer who’s gone for the bold move of having Panesar in his team! Noob.

Alot of money to have tied up if he is out for more than one gw.

I'm thinking of downgrading to Nasri and then solidifying my defence for a couple of weeks too. No points hits needed so i can't see the downside - will probably make a bit of money too instead of losing it!

Not many people's benches can survive 3 weeks with Fabregas on it (mine cant), plus I hadnt made a transfer yet (now done Fab->Cahill) so its no sweat off my back. LOVE having Cahill in my team

I've got a "head-to-head" in my team. Two players are on opposing sides:

Ethers (Stoke) vs. Toure (Man C)

If Ethers score or assists, Toure clean sheet is wiped out.
If Toure has a clean sheet, Ethers returns 2 pts.

    Leave as is?
On the subs bench, I have Ridgewell, Samba or Obinna.
Introducing Ridgewell for Toure would mean a Schwarzer-Ridgewell head-to-head.

At least in that situation you can be reasonably confident that one or the other will score well. If you're not confident that anyone on your bench would do well then leave as is i reckon.

Can't believe I'm considering letting Elmander wear the armband this weekend. If someone would've told me that a couple of months ago I would have ridiculed them without mercy.

There are so many viable options for the armband this GW. Gonna be a tricky one.

Surely as a fellow Swede you have to take that gamble, and at home to Blackpool too!
I'm still debating.. fixtureproof Tevez, Nani at home, or Drogba against a weak Newcastle defence..or even VdV against Pool at home..hmmmmm

I can't consider Elmander, if he gets me double digits great, but like you I have Nani, VDV, and Drogba. If I know VDV will play, he's my choice. Cant ignore he leads the fantasy world in points per game, and unlike most other stars, doesnt go down with a slight knock. I anticipate he will be on the pitch this weekend.

Done Elmander trade, prior to fab news.

Now, I dont need to do another trade this week, but was looking to shore up defense (either Kolarov, Vidic or Evra for Elmo Fudd) and toying with losing fab to catcth the Cahill wave that might break V WBA

SO, no hits to 8pts - have I gone mad?

PS - Was planning a 4pt-er next week anyway !!

Is Bale and VDV out of tonights game a smokescreen? VDV however did miss training yesterday.

Could make my Fab swap out essential for this week.

As you should be every so often.

I have to resist the urge to make a knee-jerk transfer of Cesc

The man will be out for up to 3 weeks whilst his value will drop. Probably not knee jerk to get rid.

    two things

firstly, who is the best option for terry (already have toure, vidic, konchesky, coleman)

and also, who is the best choice for captaincy this week, i was thinking of going for a wild pick in either n'zogbia or elmander?

    any thoughts / suggestions?

Getting a bit sick of getting four points from my so-called world-class captains. Might go for Piquionne.

    Team is:

    Foster/Robinson
    Alex/Jagielka/Toure/Jara/Elmo
    Nani/Malouda/Fabregas/Adam/N’Zogbia
    Drogba/Odemwingie/Carroll

Got two freebies this week.. Obviously a Fabregas transfer is on my mind, as well as shipping Elmo out but that might wait for now.. Opinions on what you would do? I’ve got plans but just wanna hear other thoughts.. Thanx!!

as much as elmo needs to go, in your situation you need to do fabs/odemwingie out for VDV/elmander. im not worried about vdv injury, i think he is getting rest, and nevermind spurs fixtures, he's fixture proof IMO

Yep, I agree with ya there... Bolton have some great fixtures and VDV is definately fixture proof.. Those are the two moves I was going to do, you're on the same page as me mate.. Might look at my defense next week, maybe get Konchesky in for Elmo...

Which do you prefer boys? They are all for a 4 point hit.

    1. Fabregas & Carroll > Rooney & N'Zog/MGP
    2. Fabregas & Carroll > Elmander & Cahill
    3. Fabregas & Jara > Cahill & Salcido
    4. Fabregas & Albrighton > Cahill & N'Zog/MGP

If it was anything other than his hamstring I'd think that he might recover quickly.

Unfortunately Fabregas's hamstings are made out of string and yoghurt pots (like those telephones you made as a kid) and I can see him bring in and out of the side all season.

Maybe just suck it up and play samba. Might not be pretty but better than another hit IMO. I can still put together a decent front 7 as well. I personally don't think it's necessary.

Your team should be ok, just. With Fab, berra and Elmo as subs.
Try to avoid penalty transfers. Take a long term approach when choosing player. Try reading this: http://fantasyadvice.co.uk/#BLOG

Anyone considering Walcott to replace fabs? Surely with nasri taking fabs spot in the middle Theo will b starting winger again and we all saw how damaging he was when he was starting.
