“The times they are a-changin’.”

Bob Dylan, October 1963

This song was written almost half a century ago but Dylan clearly had what’s to come right on the precipice of his mind. That’s right, Johan Elmander is leading the captain’s poll. If ever there was a sign that times were and are changing in this Fantasy season, this would certainly be it. We’re not in Kansas anymore…

“Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen, and keep your eyes wide the chance won’t come again.”

It’s taken him a fair bit longer than expected to settle into life in the Premier league, but alongside Chung-Yong Lee, Elmander is somewhat perversely proving Gary Megson makes a great scout if an ill-bodied manager. This season, under the stewardship of Owen Coyle, he has begun to flourish, much to the surprise of the many who had previously written the Swede off as a Premier League flop. With 8 goals, 5 assists and 13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points Elmander is the current value pick for the season and your lead candidate for the armband.

Evidently, following the lack of assurances the “obvious” picks have been able to provide in recent weeks – the next step in line is to play a bit more fast and loose and bank on a form player against a defence which is known for conceding the odd goal or two.

“The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast, the slow one now, will later be fast”

It’s not like this is some kind of runaway victory for Elmander though, evidence so far points to an incredibly close race with Nani a mere handful of votes in the wake of the Bolton striker, and with good cause considering his home form and the visit of Blackburn for him and his United cohorts this week. The news of Newcastle’s second string centre-back pairing sees Didier Drogba well in the reckoning for another crack at the whip as well.

Rafael Van Der Vaart, Carlos Tevez and even Wayne Rooney following his penalty at Rangers, are also well and truly in the reckoning.

If you’ve not let us know of your decision, or you’ve not yet made one, why not stew on it briefly and then head back to the frontpage and rock the vote. Make sure it counts.

“And the first one now will later be last, for the times they are a-changin’.”

The thing I love about the deliberate red card incident, is that throughout the whole thing luis "hand ball" suarez is the one pleading for the referee to take action....

There must be a black kettle in there somewhere! 😀

Maybe it will backfire on Suarez. With Alonso and Ramos out of the game with Auxerre, it lessens the chance of Ajax making it through to the Europa League.

They would have to put on some performace to make back your 8 points but it could pay off.

It's a gamble but they are good transfers.

Wildcarded early in the week. Perhaps a bit prematurely but it followed a few weeks poor form. Team now, coming to the end of the week is:

    Foster (Jaask)
Vidic, Alex, Johnson R, (Coleman, Simpson)
Cahill, VdV, Nasri, Nani, (Gamst Pedersen)
    Tevez, Elmander, Carrol

    2.9m in the bank

Any immediate thoughts? Am wondering on suggestions for replacement cheaps at the back.

    Thanks.

Alex will need to be watched due to his surgery. I know Che are lacking in options at the back but he is still carrying an injury. Maybe Ivanovic as an alt?
Koralov is one Id get in also - Relatively cheap, attacking, CS potential - Maybe instead of Johnson as you have Foster
Coleman also needs to be watched due to rotation.
I think that your Forward line is too light personally but with the form of Elmander and Carroll I may be in the minority. I would try to have one of Drog, Torres or Rooney always so atm Torres looks the best out of that lot.

      Good team though.

2 weeks, but knowing Weneger and Fabregas glass hamstrings that could be anything upto 4/5/6.

He will then no doubt be played for a 20 minute cameo before his first start when he will not be match fit..

My favourite player in FPL and real life but he has to go.

          Hope that helps

why would you regret it when he's injured and it can't do any harm to transfer him out, and you can easily buy him back for cheaper probably when he returns.

The injury itself, his four yellows, and the possible psychological effect of having two problem hamstrings (remember he and Wenger both mentioned how he didn't have confidence in the original hamstring) mean that getting rid of him is a no brainer for me...

Oh, and Arsenal's fixtures are pretty poor anyway.

Opinions on team for this week lads, much appreciated.

    Foster
    Evra - Jagielka - Kolarov
    Nani(c) - Malouda - Bale - Nasri
    Elmander - Drogba - Carroll

    Hahnemann - Adam - Konchesky - Jara

Would like to play Adam but just cant fit him in. Shame.

    I have a midfield of:

N'Zog, Malouda, VDV, Fabs and Nani

with Fabs' injury I'm thinking Cahill IN for this week vs West Brom might be a good choice.

    Thoughts?

          The Australian newspaper says this

They are due to take Tim mid to late December and depending how far they go in the tournament will determine how long he is away," Moyes said. "I'm trying to delay him going until January and will do the best I can but I think it's unfair."

So nothing concrete but Fabs will hopefully be back when Cahill goes

just heard from bbc's lawro that arsenal have the best away record this season in the prem. they have also lost 2 games in a row and need to get back on track. after this week's game, they have fulham at home so fixtures arent bad, GW17 they have MU but by then my plans will have been altered. I have also heard that WBA have not conceded a headed goal this season, and everton's fixtures are weird, good-bad-good-bad etc.

So, taking all things into consideration, i have decided to go with Nasri rather than Cahill for my Fabs replacement.

    Opinions?

    Foster
    Kolarov, Alex, Coleman
    Cahill, VDV, Nani(C), Adam
    Drogba, Tevez, Carroll

    Al Habsi, Elmo, Enrique, Albrighton.

Will I be fielding 11 players this week?

Having used my free (Fab>Cahill) is there value in a 4 pointer anywhere?

    Alcaraz -> Kolarov

    or

    Barton -> Gamst Pedersen

    or both

Basically the way I see it, as this post goes, "times are a-changin" and with that possibly looking at a new approach to this. We can all agree that this season is somewhat of an oddity compared to those previous, yet we use the same tactics we have done previously and as a result we end up with OOPs sitting on our benches and superstars on crutches. It might be time for some pointhunting, and if that means at the cost of pointhits, then so be it. It may be that the odd approach will work for the odd season.

In my Telegraph team (limited transfers) I still have Cashley, Malou & Drogba.

Can't decide if I should get rid and who ?!

    Right

Fabs > Nasri is my free.

thinking of doing Simpson > Vidic as well, but seems pointless taking 4pt hit for a defender.

that said I would then go Coleman > Koralov next, so doing the Vidic transfer now would actually get me Vidic against both Blackburn and Blackpool.

    worth it?

Guys would you agree with these moves or should I look to sort my mess of a defence out first?

    Fabs to nasri
    Piqiuonni to elmander (4 pts)

Already have Cahill and plan on getting vdv in for him later.
