Spurs put on another classy European show as Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon take up Gareth Bales’ role of chief destroyer to dispose of Werder Bremen. Over in Glasgow meanwhile, United come out on top against Rangers – Wayne Rooney returning to scoring ways with a late penalty. Here’s the notes on last night’s events…

Harry Redknapp left Rafael Van der Vaart out of his lineup, forcing a switch to 4-4-2 with Peter Crouch coming into the side alongside Roman Pavlyuchenko. Van der Vaart was nursing knocks to both shin and ankle following the victory at Arsenal, with some reports suggesting that the Dutchman would have played had the tie been a decisive affair. Redknapp however, indicated that his playmaker was far from close to be fit, hinting that he could be a doubt for the weekend clash with Liverpool at the Lane..

“Van der Vaart wasn’t close to being available. He went for a scan and then knew he wouldn’t be available.”

Spurs also lost Jermaine Jenas to a calf injury after 19 minutes last night and he will go into the weekend clash with Liverpool as a major doubt. Wilson Palacios came off the bench to replace him and would seem set to earn a start against Roy Hodgson’s side as a result.

Jermain Defoe came off the bench to replace Pavlyuchenko on the hour mark and looked sharp enough to indicate that he could go into the starting lineup at the weekend. Much will depend on the fitness of Van der Vaart however. Ironically, Tottenham’s two best performers in the 3-0 win were Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon. The latter outshone Gareth Bale on the flanks, providing assists for two of the goals with some effervescent wing play. Modric meanwhile scored a very “Rafa-like” goal, feeding off a Peter Crouch knock-down to turn his man and slot home smartly.

Should Van der Vaart be fit, you would expect Redknapp to bring him in on the right-flank, with Defoe paired with Crouch and Lennon dropping to the bench. The performance of Lennon on the night however, will give the Spurs boss plenty to think about ahead of the visit of Liverpool.

Redknapp will now take his side to Holland to face FC Twente on December 7 with the chance to top the group if they can match Inter Milan’s scoreline against the Dutch. Spurs travel to Birmingham prior to that tie in Gameweek 16 and it will be interesting to see if the Spurs boss rests or rotates for that league encounter.

Man United were far less convincing in Glasgow but Wayne Rooney’s calmly taken spot-kick proved enough for Alex Ferguson’s side to seal their progress.

Ferguson started with a make-shift back four, resting the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrcice Evra and Rafael. Further up the field however there were big gun involved as Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov were paired in attack. Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs, returning from injury, were included in an experienced midfield.

The performance of Rooney will come under the greatest scrutiny from a Fantasy Manager’s perspective. The striker looked lively enough, showing no signs of being troubled by his recent ankle injury. Sharpenss is still understandably lacking however, as acknowledged by Ferguson in his post-match comments.

“It wasn’t the easiest night for him having missed couple of chances. There’s still some rustiness in his game. He needs matches and he’ll get them as we try to get him to his level. But this a good start for him.”

Rooney himself was suitably pleased with his late winner and expressed his desire to return to scoring ways…

“Obviously it is a bit of a relief for me to score. Hopefully I can build on this now, I hope I can go on a goalscoring run.”

Rooney would seem a certain starter against Blackburn this weekend as Ferguson looks to give him more pitch time. The first choice back four will surely be restored with Rafael again likely to seal the start at right-back. Giggs and Scholes could all end up benched having started this game as Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park return to the reckoning.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any chance of any games being postponed this weekend because of the snow?

doubt it it isnt that bad out there and most the grounds have underground heating

the only way games r called off these days is due to public safety ie the surrounding areas and i cant see enough snow in the next 48 hours to make getting to and from games a problem

Cool thanks for that, I was just a tad worried that the Newcastle game might get called off, having four players involved for that one.

im not Tosey but i have the same three Keith.
          Currently thinking of:
          Elmo -> Kolorov (free)
Leave Fab on the bench, play VdV and let Konchesky come in for him if he doesnt make it...
Hoping for more news on Fab...if he's def out for 3 games+ i might have to think about Cahill....

If you're leaving him in this week and Fabs does up being out for 3 weeks I don't see the point of transferring him.

Effectively, by keeping him in your squad this week you've already waited out 1/3 of his absence. After 2 more gameweeks you'll want him back, no?

Unless he's out longer than 3 weeks or I have other mids (VdV) that go down too then I'd rather just leave Fabs on my bench until he's ready to come back.

I have Carroll, Tevez and K Davies as strikers so the reality is that I'd only be able to play 4 mids anyway. Since I'd have to bench one of my mids every week anyway benching Fabs whilst he's out injured and playing my 4 other mids seems the most logical thing to do, to me anyway.

          hey keith

well my plan was do fabs to gerrard in a couple weeks anyway, guna hold onto him this week as can field a team without him and want him for fulham at home next week hopefully

elmo to kolarov im looking at but sunderland forum says zendens out and elmo may start so ill prob do nothing this week then have a look next week, expect stoke to score this week anyway so no rush for kolarov

plus theres bound to be more injuries next week

          whats your plans?

I cant see Fabs back in under 4 weeks for full 90 mins so thinking about Nasri because he seems to score well when Fabs is out but bad fixtures. Otherwise thinking Fabs and Elmo -> Baines and Lee this week then Barton-> MGP next week for their nice run. But struggling if VDV doesnt make it.

well all wenger has said is "he could be out for 2-3 weeks", considering he walked off ok i think its best to wait and see

im not seperate to make a change this week so barring any other injury news im guna keep 2 freebies for next week i think

    Overheard Monday Arsenal dressing room:

    Wenger; "How's your hamstring Cesc"

Cesc; "Pretty tight boss, don't think it will make a mid-week game"

Wenger; "Right" ...."Well we'll just fly you out for a pointless appearance to make sure"

Beginning to lose my respect for Wenger's judgment. GgRRrrr!

I think you've got this week covered, I don't think you should take a hit till much closer to deadline time in case games are called off. 4pt hit for 0 is a big price to pay if no match.

They did jack mate, just showed up Scottish prem for the joke league it really is.

Rangers showed no ambition to commit players forward even though a draw was no good to them.

Go back and watch the game and count the number of times that Rangers broke down the Utd right and only one Rangers player bothered to get up into the Utd penalty area.

The football gods have seen this fraidy cat football before and they usually punish it by letting the team that's holding out for a sneaky last minute goal instead of going for the win get beaten by a last minute heartbreaker.

And sure enough last night guess what happened?

I feel I need Tevez. IMO at the moment which ever 3 u have from Drogba Tevez Carroll & Elmander just keep them. They are all either in form or have decent fixtures and will come good. If u spend time chopping and changing between the 3 u will probably end up missing out on some big hauls from each.

oh dear is what i think. where do i start. elmohamady no loner guarenteed a starting role, coleman's role under threat due to the return of jack rodwell and imminent return of leon osman. rafael is rotated regularly with wes brown and john o shea. the chelsea defence is a shamble at the minute so wouldnt fork out any big money on any of their defenders.

midfield: arteta is playing deeper this season and espite a lucky goal on monday, has generally been poor and off the pace. park is also a huge rotation risk for united.

defoe and rooney only just back and will take a week or two at least to get up to speed and score the heavy points that their transfer fee comands.

apart from that it looks f*cking solid.

rather risk a known starter with a halfway decent CS potential than watch another 1 point cameo. His others are coleman, konchesky, simpson i think, i like kolarov better than any of those options.

i totally agree about not using your transfer until necessary but looking at his defence, he needs to bring someone in. I see virtually no chance of CSs from Lpool or Newcastle, and you gotta have something with upside in case coleman sits. Yes on the road isnt the best fixture, but its in his price range and its a possible long term keeper IMO.

would ideally keep transfers but hoping to keep Kolorov for a while...and you never know he could an assist from one of those corners...!

    Mornign chaps,

    some advice needed

not sure who to bench this week.. front 8 is

    Malouda / Nani / Arteta / Kuyt / Nasri

    Tevez / Carrol / Piquionne

Am leaning towards benching Carroll as sense a Chelsea backlash but I know he can nick a goal. Piq at home to Wigan seems a good enough reason to play him.

    Thoughts?

You gotta sit piquionne. Yes the fixture is favorable but he is in a lower class than those other options. If you sat someone else and they put up points it will be a lot more painful than if piq does. That being said its a good problem to have.

This is a good point. Having Carroll on the bench and watching him score would be much more annoying than Piq sneaking one. Funny ay.

The fact that I've got Alex also makes me want to sit Carroll though - cos in an ideal world I'd get a Chelsea cleanie and Piq woudl score.

....but the world isnt ideal is it.

Chelsea obv arent keeping clean sheets at the moment, but the only other player i have is Drogba who links up well with Malouda.

I think Malouda for a few weeks could work. Maybe even longer. Playing the tops team at least can make it an open game with some goals, as opposed to Birm parking the bus.

For me - Malouda is a season keeper. Althoguh pricey to get in now - I've had him from the start and wouldn't consider taking him out. He's not had his best patch 'fantasy wise' recently but against Brum created loads of chances and just a matter of time before hes back in the points again. Some games he's practically OOP playing up front for probably the best side in the league.

If you asked a while back he was 'essential'. Now all of a sudden peopel think he's useless. Tosh! He's class.

Same as Drog - wish I had him and madness people taking him out in my opinion.

+1 Wilco. People have no patience. Chelsea are an elite goal scoring team who have had a dry run, surely the worst stretch they will have this season. If you think they are only as good as their last few matches, then they belong in relegation territory and thats obviously rubbish. I really think, weather permitting, this is the week the offense finds its form and chelsea will put up 3-4 goals. And as for the "tough fixtures", the cream rises to the top. I want to save all these posts about getting rid of chelsea and see what the lot have to say by the end of the weekend, weather permitting.

Or you could be sitting with another set of 2's for the 8th week in a row. Getting players back in is a lot easier than getting the points back while you wait for them to come back into form. I know as I'm one of those who paitiently waited for 7 weeks for Mal and Drogs to return to form. I went from 8K to 150k while i did so.

Took a 4 pt. hit early on in the week to bring in VdV and Elmander but team is in shambles right now:

        Foster,Krul,

        Bramble(inj.)/ O'Shea(out of favour)/ Coleman(could miss his place as well)/ D.Collins/ Jara,

        Nani/ Fabs(inj.)/ VdV(inj.)/ Adam/ Barton(susp.),

        Drogs,Tevez,Elmander.

If VdV and Coleman don't play this week,I'm looking at a 8-9 man team,so at least 1 more hit is almost inevitable(to replace either Fabs or Bramble and then hope that VdV and Coleman play).Consider my misfortune-I only bought Bramble last week as Elmo's replacement and now he is injured!

        So which one is better:

        i) Bramble->(5.3> DEF)Onuoha/Konchesky/Dann,

        OR

        ii) Fabs->Cahill?

I'd personally do Fabs to Cahill, because you're gonna be taking a 8 point hit, and Cahill looks the most likely to at least pay you back with some points.

But it looks like you are being chased in most of your leagues, so I would probably tide it out with fabs and not do anymore transfers

Ok same question that many are facing: who to replace Fabregas with.
It's a points hit for me so need someone who is going to get a good haul over the next few weeks and at least 4 more than Enrique (my likely sub in for Fab) this week.
          Here's my mid
          Nani - Brunt - NZog - Fab - Ferguson

VDV was top choice - now injury doubt
Bale - hmmm he'd be good
Cahill...another good choice, but off to Asia Cup in a few weeks

Cahill was next, wba next, but would be overkill with chelsea next week.

Spurs are leaky at the back, I would play Torres.

Will be a high scoring affair at Newcastle but think it will be Chelsea reaping the rewards. Newc have 1st choice centre backs plus two of three central mids (Barton and Tiote) out. Could be carnage.

              Guten morgen!

              Currently have:

              Jaas/Gilks

              Toure Coleman Alex (Elmo) (Simpson)
              VDV Walcott Nani Adam (Barton)
              Torres Drog Carroll

1 free transfer - money no issue
              Options (obviously weather dependant):
              1) Elmo - Kolorov (will bring in Kol next week if not this)
              2) Elmo - Vidic (limits £ ability to get Fabs back in later)
              3) Elmo - Rafael

              5) Adam - Bale
              6) A.N.Other

              Any thoughts please?

id say 1 out of those options and you probably feel that way in your heart as we have a tendency to list our ideal options first. Ive said it before and i will say it again, kolarov is a good replacement potentially long term. may as well get him now if you are planning to anyway, still a CS opportunity, plus you may need to address another area next week anyways

Cheers. 1) is actually my head feeling. Bale is my heart and gut talking - suprisingly as a Liverpool fan. Last time a had that kind of feeling a few weeks ago it was that Park was going to get a brace, but didn't follow through with it - it was sickening when he did (especially as a rival transferred him in).

i'm seriously considering 3) Elmo -> Rafael as a risky value choice.

don't know if Rafael is a nailed starter..

Was rested last night, which seems to indicate he'll play Sat.

I think Ferguson will be looking to play him in most games, tryiong to build a settled back 4, with Brown/O'shea coming in when Fergie feels that Rael may not be able to deal with the constant aerial threat (i.e Stoke).

would giving fab the captains armband (so it automatically goes to elmander) and benching nani so he only comes on at the end of the gameweek, to wind up the lads in my minileague be too immature and something i shouldnt consider? or should i do it?

it's the cleverest thing you can do in FPL (short of winning it)

You could be left with 3 of that team not starting even before weather probs..

i might get a defender this week and move fabs next week.

                Alcaraz suspended- 0 points

Elmo subbed on - 1 point

simpson concedes 2 goals or more- 1 point

coleman may not start 0-2 points

if you have a freebie i might make a 4 point hit to sell fabs and a defender, then again most of my opinions arent shared by the masses.

It could be a good idea though.

I'd probably shift Mummy but then I hear a Sunderland player is missing and Mummy would be likely to come back in this weekend?

Could very well happen but do you really want another 1 point cameo from the guy. Last week I dropped him for konchesky, elmo 1 point, konch 9. Granted l'pools fixture this week isnt ideal, but overall a nice run of fixtures, but you throw in VDV doubts and the fact that Spurs have struggled more often than not after CL games, you never know.

I can see my team is pretty much trash at the moment, but Fabregas out is pretty much a forced sub... Konchesky or Baines in for Mummy looks like a decent plan.

As for midfield... I'm thinking NZog.

you have coleman, id drop him for baines if you want baines. im getting rid of coleman next week, got some fabs money to spend and kolarov will be coming in in all likelihood
