Spurs put on another classy European show as Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon take up Gareth Bales’ role of chief destroyer to dispose of Werder Bremen. Over in Glasgow meanwhile, United come out on top against Rangers – Wayne Rooney returning to scoring ways with a late penalty. Here’s the notes on last night’s events…

Harry Redknapp left Rafael Van der Vaart out of his lineup, forcing a switch to 4-4-2 with Peter Crouch coming into the side alongside Roman Pavlyuchenko. Van der Vaart was nursing knocks to both shin and ankle following the victory at Arsenal, with some reports suggesting that the Dutchman would have played had the tie been a decisive affair. Redknapp however, indicated that his playmaker was far from close to be fit, hinting that he could be a doubt for the weekend clash with Liverpool at the Lane..

“Van der Vaart wasn’t close to being available. He went for a scan and then knew he wouldn’t be available.”

Spurs also lost Jermaine Jenas to a calf injury after 19 minutes last night and he will go into the weekend clash with Liverpool as a major doubt. Wilson Palacios came off the bench to replace him and would seem set to earn a start against Roy Hodgson’s side as a result.

Jermain Defoe came off the bench to replace Pavlyuchenko on the hour mark and looked sharp enough to indicate that he could go into the starting lineup at the weekend. Much will depend on the fitness of Van der Vaart however. Ironically, Tottenham’s two best performers in the 3-0 win were Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon. The latter outshone Gareth Bale on the flanks, providing assists for two of the goals with some effervescent wing play. Modric meanwhile scored a very “Rafa-like” goal, feeding off a Peter Crouch knock-down to turn his man and slot home smartly.

Should Van der Vaart be fit, you would expect Redknapp to bring him in on the right-flank, with Defoe paired with Crouch and Lennon dropping to the bench. The performance of Lennon on the night however, will give the Spurs boss plenty to think about ahead of the visit of Liverpool.

Redknapp will now take his side to Holland to face FC Twente on December 7 with the chance to top the group if they can match Inter Milan’s scoreline against the Dutch. Spurs travel to Birmingham prior to that tie in Gameweek 16 and it will be interesting to see if the Spurs boss rests or rotates for that league encounter.

Man United were far less convincing in Glasgow but Wayne Rooney’s calmly taken spot-kick proved enough for Alex Ferguson’s side to seal their progress.

Ferguson started with a make-shift back four, resting the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrcice Evra and Rafael. Further up the field however there were big gun involved as Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov were paired in attack. Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs, returning from injury, were included in an experienced midfield.

The performance of Rooney will come under the greatest scrutiny from a Fantasy Manager’s perspective. The striker looked lively enough, showing no signs of being troubled by his recent ankle injury. Sharpenss is still understandably lacking however, as acknowledged by Ferguson in his post-match comments.

“It wasn’t the easiest night for him having missed couple of chances. There’s still some rustiness in his game. He needs matches and he’ll get them as we try to get him to his level. But this a good start for him.”

Rooney himself was suitably pleased with his late winner and expressed his desire to return to scoring ways…

“Obviously it is a bit of a relief for me to score. Hopefully I can build on this now, I hope I can go on a goalscoring run.”

Rooney would seem a certain starter against Blackburn this weekend as Ferguson looks to give him more pitch time. The first choice back four will surely be restored with Rafael again likely to seal the start at right-back. Giggs and Scholes could all end up benched having started this game as Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park return to the reckoning.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Looking to upgrade a striker after this week using my Fabregas money. Torres was in mind, but could anyone make a case for Rooney given his lively showing last night and United's greater capacity to create and score goals?

Also, who should make way? Elmander or Carroll? - remember, it's after this gameweek I'm looking....

gw18-21 I'm looking at Carroll--->Torres. Hopefully by then Stevie G is also back.

If I had Elm, i would keep him.

Carroll out? it's a big .6 hit if you want him back after four weeks, and still with extra to find somewhere else for Torres money. Seems like a lot of messing about transfers and value drop. Good luck if you go for it.

Ive been playing the "value" game for 15 weeks. I have the highest value in my mini league by a bit. BUT Im 40 pts of the leader.

It's time to make a change.

Id stay put for now. Wait to see a bit more from Rooney. Elmander still has afew more weeks of nice fixtures and carroll is as good a value as you are going to find. I would say elmander to rooney in a couple weeks if you like what rooney is doing. You sure you couldnt upgrade elsewhere?

agree - Id hold off for this GW. Id prefer to keep Carroll for the long haul though.

Have a funny feeling that this ELmander talk will quiet down soon enough - dont think he'll keep it goign all season.

Wait a couple weeks and see what Rooney / Torres / RVP are up to Id suggest

alonso, when you posted that counterfiet lineup a couple weeks ago you cost several managers points. Im all about having a laugh, read my posts, you may not find them humourous but at least recognize its intended to be. It is possible to joke all day long on this board, dont just list erroneous information that can be interpreted as fact. Its a self gratifying prank, youve already done it, its old and uninspired at this point. Try another brand of comedy, or are you this depressingly one-dimensional?

from my memory it was about an hour and a half before the lockout, but this website promptly went down for over an hour just as he had posted it... so it was the last piece of info people read on here before the site went down. if the site had stayed up i doubt the whole alonso thing would've happened because people would've discredited the info. instead the people who took it as fact made their transfers and got punished for it.

and this post was a full 48 hours before the newcastle game... obviously he is messing!

yes i do appreciate it when people post useful information, but i always take it with a pinch of salt. i.e. only if there is a source accompanying the info...

i think his humour is more taking the piss out of himself than trying to antagonizing people. it's more a case of if you're allowing yourself to be antagonized...

I've already used my free transfers this week, before Fabregas-gate...

    Should I

    a) Hold on to him and avoid a points hit - I have N'Zog as my first sub to replace him?

    Or

    b) transfer Fabregas out for someone?

Would just like to point out a mistake in the article Mark. Its Blackburn, Man Utd are playing this weekend, not Wigan

Rooney would seem a certain starter against Wigan Blackburn this weekend as Ferguson looks to give him more pitch time.

First thoughts are to get rid of Berbs and Terry. No need for Terry as you have Cole.

      Berbs just has to go.

Toure downgrade to Kolorav - hes all the rage.

      Walcott out.

Get yourself some Nani in your life

    January Wildcard Price Explosion?

The January wildcard window opens on the 4th of Jan and runs until the 12th of Feb.

Log would suggest the later you play the wildcard, the better placed you are to take advantage of any bargains thrown up by people changing clubs in the REAL WORLD transfer window.

However, by that point, many of the more desirable players will surely have rocketed in price due to the unprecedented number of transfers in.

Is this the way it will work? If we assumer just half the game's players are still active in January, that's well over a million wildcards to be played in a month. That's got to have a major impact on price changes.

So, are you planning to play your wildcard early and get the best value possible, or are you going to wait until the end and risk not being able to afford players in exchange for assessing the implications of potential club-club transfers?

Maybe the way to go would be to use free transfers to catch the potential price risers even if you don't particularly want them long term. So many different ways to play this one. It's making my head hurt.

    What do you all think?

I can't really change that many players and also I wouldn't want to (as long as they all haven't got injured etc)

Some of them are so much higher in price now it's ridiculous!

    Fabs a money making machine?

Had him at start of season and sold for 12m.

He went down in price to 11.8 and i bought him back.

He is now 12 and i am going to sell him.

He will surely go down to 11.8 again and i will buy him back again.

    Hence i will have gained 0.2 🙂

that was nearly me but thought the best captain value is watson, can see him chucking down a few overs as doherty isnt as good as swann so the aussies need that extra seamer more

also he tends do well against england
had pietersen and bell as well as strauss not a baqd day would take a fpl 4 point hit though to swap hilfenhaus for siddle and make him captain now though

Bruce does have a centre back fetish, so they have about fifteen at the club... Mensah, Da Silva and Ferdinand could fill the roles.

Even if Elmo does play RB I'm not particularly interested in him at that price being part of a makeshift defence that won't keep many clean sheets.

To be honest, I doubt too many people will be able to put 2 and 2 together and realise that Turner + Bramble being out will mean that Elmo wont play.

Most people will just look at the fact that he hasn't started in the last three and will get rid.

Unless of course they are clued in and regularly use this site.

cahill could of had a hat-trick against Sunderland if it wasnt for the two 2 being cleared off the line. Arteta was very poor IMO and never deserved any bonus. Everton in general played well though. I would def go Cahill ahead of Arteta.
