Sunday saw the record breaking Premier League goalscoring continue as, for the first time, every team notched at least one goal over a weekend. While a few goals are always welcome to Fantasy Managers, Sunday was dominated by injuries and further frustration caused by the faltering form of Carlo Ancelotti’s heavyweights…

A woeful mix up in the Chelsea defence meant that Andy Carroll prolonged his goalscoring form and that Carlo Ancelotti’s side again failed to keep a clean sheet. They’ve now kept just a single shutout in their last 6 league matches.

In attacking terms Chelsea also continue to frustrate. The misfiring Didier Drogba has now gone 7 league appearances without a goal, notching just a single assist in that time. His price in the Fantasy Premier League game dropped to 12.7 last night – it has now dropped 0.4 in the space of three Gameweeks.

Florent Malouda at least contributed the assist for Salomon Kalou’s goal – the Frenchman looked the best player on the pitch in fairness, but left without FPL Bonus. That honour went to Jose Enrique who collected the maximum haul; our Members Opta stats do at least back up Enrique’s case however – more on that in a Numbers Game article later.

Newcastle were without the inspiration of Kevin Nolan in midfield due to an ankle injury that has apparently been worsening over recent weeks. Chris Hughton has already counted Nolan out of the trip to West Brom next weekend. Newcastle will at least have Joey Barton to reinforce the midfield as he returns from injury.

Andy Carroll has now scored 4 goals in his last 5 games. In fact, he has scored all of Newcastle’s goals in that run – an incredible stat and one that emphasises his importance to Chris Hughton’s side.

Rafael Van der Vaart overcame an ankle injury to start in a 4-5-1 formation, pushed up in a support role for loan striker Peter Crouch once again. He lasted just 12 minutes, stricken by a hamstring injury, the Dutchman was replaced by Jermain Defoe as the home side shifted to a traditional 4-4-2. The Van der Vaart situation is now a problem for Redknapp and Fantasy Managers. Spurs face a tough trip to Birmingham next and, following that, they have a Champions League tie in Holland that will decided if Spurs top their group. Regardless of a prognosis for Van der Vaart, it already seems most unlikely that he will play at part at St Andrews in Gameweek 16.

Long-term Fantasy Managers will now have to ponder whether to bench their asset. Aaron Lennon’s performance and goal will surely have cemented his place on the right-flank for the foreseeable future, forcing Redknapp to utilise Van der Vaart in the role behind the striker. That has often been Crouch and it’s a system and partnership that has worked superbly this season. The Defoe option for Redknapp really casts some doubt on how the Spurs boss will use the Dutch playmaker when fit. Those Fantasy Managers who can shift out Van der Vaart without a heavy cash loss will likely be weighing up their options in the days to come.

Younes Kaboul also picked up an injury in this game – he suffered a hip problem and was replaced by Sebastian Bassong on 36 minutes. He too will go into the weekend a doubt for the trip to Birmingham.

The late defeat for Liverpool was compounded by a shoulder injury to stalwart Jamie Carragher which looks set to sideline him for a considerable period. Liverpool reported a suspected dislocation. Roy Hodgson seemed suitably devastated by yet another injury blow to a key player.

“I don’t know at this stage how long Jamie will be out for but I would think it will be quite long because it’s a serious injury…We are now without Steven Gerrard and Jamie for a period of time – both of whom are the lifeblood of this club.”

Gerrard is expected to be out for at least another fortnight which leaves Liverpool woefully short of leaders on the pitch. Sotirios Kyrgiakos will surely benefit from the prolonged absence of Carragher with a run of starts in the side. The big Greek defender is a significant target at set-plays and carries a goal threat as a result – he has 2 goals to his name already this season in just 5 starts. At 5.1 in the FPL, he is certainly a strong option in Defence and arguably a stronger alternative to Paul Konchesky and Glen Johnson for Liverpool’s run of kind opponents. More on that in “Frisking the Fixtures” later.

Fernando Torres failed to find the net for the third successive game – he has returned just a single assist in that spell. Interestingly Hodgson was quizzed on the striker’s confidence following the game and gave us this reaction…

“I think he’s getting much better and crisis in confidence is too strong a phrase. His confidence is good…Because Fernando sets such very high standards he will be disappointed he didn’t take one of the chances that came his way, but I was pleased with Fernando today. He and Ngog were very good up front and we created a lot of chances and some good opportunities.”

While Hodgson states that Torres had opportunities, the statistics show that he did in fact get just a single shot on goal in the entire game, with 3 more efforts blocked.

One of the new powerful features that our Members will soon have available to them is the ability to view Opta data over a range of Gameweeks. Examing the form of Torres, we’re shown that he’s managed just 5 shots on goal from Gameweeks 13-15. We will pick apart those stats further in a Numbers Game later but, in a nutshell, Torres is certainly underperforming statistically based on his last three starts.

A couple more notes from Saturday’s matches – first up it should be noted that Kevin Foley of Wovles not only scored his second goal of the season against Sunderland in the 3-2 win but the fact that he also did this from a midfield role. Foley is a traditionally a midfielder but has filled in at right-back for the majority of the season. He is also classed as a Defender in the FPL and priced at just 3.9. With Ronald Zubar returning at full-back, Foley was given the right-midfield slot with Matt Jarvis reverting to the left and Stephen Hunt benched. Foley could well retain that role when Wolves take the trip to Blackburn next weekend and could hold it for favourable home games with Birmingham and Wigan to come.

Finally, the three-match ban handed out to Mikel Arteta will rob David Moyes’ side of their chief set-piece expert and penalty taker. Those duties, certainly when it comes to direct free-kicks, will now fall to Leighton Baines. The left-back returned his sixth assist of the season in the 4-1 defeat to West Brom but will now enjoy an increased goal threat over the next three matches. Baines has already converted from a direct free-kick in Arteta’s absence at White Hart Lane earlier in Gameweek 9. The only downside to Baines’ increased potential is the fact that Everton face trips to Chelsea and City in the next three Gameweeks; his owners may well have to rely on continued attacking returns then.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well he won't be competing with Ivanovic until Alex is back - so it's down to Bos vs Ferreira. I reckon he's in the box seat.

If you have got that much in the bank you won't necessarily need a cheap midfielder. Bale is the obvious VDV replacement but Nasri is doing very well too.

I agree with the prorities above. I always play 3-4-3 so with Nolan probably out you would be starting both Cahill and Elmander plus your VDV replacement. Wouldn't rule Coleman out from starting either.

    Afternoon All!

Have a strong midfield currently though have been looking at the upcoming fixtures and was thinking of loosing N'Zogbia and bringing in Etherington.

N'Zog next 6: Stk, Eve, Avl, Wol, Ars, New
Etherington next 6: Wig, Blp, Ars, Bla, Ful, Eve

    Any thoughts?

Hasn't been the best so far I admit mainly due to how poor the 'big' teams have been, so it hasn't been easy to get captains correst. I think from now on then it will improve, the fact Man Utd won 7-1 and Chelsea have been knocked off the top has sent a big message out.

I guess I'm alone in this then but I love this season.

As a footballing season we have 3 new good promoted teams that all set out with the idea to score goals, we have what looks to be a close title race AND a close race for the European spots.

As a fantasy season we have large numbers of mid or low priced players doing well, and plenty of the big guns misfiring which makes things more interesting.

The only thing I find negative is that the bonus point allocations are worse than previous years.

I couldn't resist and already made my transfers for this week.
Trying to get ahead of the price changes.

    Already did:

    1) Elmander --> Berbs (just in it for the money, tough fixture for Bolton against Man City defense)
    2) VDV --> Etherington (decent fixtures coming up for SC, getting ahead of pricedrop for VDV)

    Current team:

    Hart
    Cashley - Sagna - S. Dann
    Nani (c) - Nasri - Cahill - Ethers
    Rooney - Tevez - Berbatov

Bench: Alex, Elmo, Nolan, Scott Carson.

    Plans for next week are:
    - getting rid of either Rooney/Berbatov for Carrol or Elmander (hard fixtures for Manu)
    - getting rid of Alex (surgery this week) for Kolo Touré (good mancity fixtures.

    Opinions on this?

        Wow.

Why won't playing the fixtures ever work?

Rooney against rubbish teams like Pompey and Hull last season = lots of goals and assists.

Rooney against the former 'big-4' = not that many goals and assists.

I'm sorry, but I think your post is well wide of the mark.

Enit, I remember last year when nearly everyone near the end had Rooney and Drogba but it was clear Torres had nice fixtures coming up, he had Pompey at home. Anyway, most were reluctant to get rid of Drogba as always but some of us went for it and did Drogba > Torres and reaped the awards with a 19 point haul. Then Drogba went back in shortly after, played the fixtures and got the most out of all three strikers..

SuperD, I remember - that was last year. I did it but unfortunately did not capt Torres. Did score ok that week though.

I agree that you need to look at the fixture but what this guy is doing sounds like a serious knee jerk to me.

Yeah, crazily knee jerk, he's just doing it for the rises which is stupid. I didn't captain him that week either, had Rooney (c) instead but still did well out of that, he scored two I think..

The guy has Nani(c) AND Rooney and taking out Elmander(one of the leading strikers) for Berba that scored his 5 goals this past week.

He benches Nolan/Alex/Elmo that are either being operated on, injured or out of favour.

Then he wants to bring back Elmander next week for Bebrba that he just bought.

And on top of that the ManU vs BP game might be snowed out.

Apologies, Ravenkbs you transfer plan makes sense now that I look at it again.

            Ouch, that's harsh.

            - I'll admit, my bench needs work. That's why I pointed out in my OP that Alex (and elmo) need to go. I'm still waiting for more news on Nolan, might just be out for 1 week.
            - What's wrong with Nani + Rooroo? I already mentioned berbatov or rooney) is only going to stay in for a short while since I don't want to overcommitt on manu.
Either Caroll or Elmander seem good choices for the moment (yeah, even if I just traded Elmander imho)
            - The snow, well, you're right there. I didn't take that into account.

Ps: can't link it up, I'm not playing on the official site (facebook app). Which might also explain why I don't mind doing the 2 transfers, since the '2 free ones a week' rule still applies for me.

Yeah, I think never taking hits is not a good strategy, and taking too many hits is also not good.

Not sure how many hits are worth it though over a season.

Wild Rover, if you take an 8 point hit, and your incoming players score 6 points more than your outgoing players, then overall you have -2 points, however, does that count as a good thing in the sense that you were able to make three/four changes and it only cost you 2 points instead of 8, and as a result you were able to radically shake-up your team?

Basically, how do you evaluate whether a hit, (or hits), worked out well or not?

Hits are always a gamble. To judge if they worked is not as simple as a few sums from the current week. You need to look further ahead, the players you bring in may score double figures in the following weeks or they may get injured. If they are players you want to keep then hits are fine. If you feel good about it, then it worked. 🙂

When the player we're transferring out will look like he won't gain ANY points, and the players we have have less chance of scoring points the next week, and the players we're transferring in have potential for big haul. Does that make sense to you? 🙂

Might have to this week. As Wild Rover says, maybe I should - I'm always chopping and changing to get rid of injured players and always managing to field 11 - but the moves are very rarely proactive.

Have something I'd like to run by you guys - reinvesting.

With players like Malouda, some of us had him since GW1, getting a 1.0M price rise. The problem comes when you lose them, but then want to take them back on when e.g. Cesc got injured - first pocketing 0.5, and then spending 0.5 again.

Now, the question is, effectively reinvesting your 0.5 - is this necessarily a bad thing? Or merely status quo? Cant seem to wrap my brain around it today.. opinions welcomed.

It's almost status quo but then you would be more susceptible to losing cash if that player were to drop after you bought them the second time.

However, it's a waste of time even TRYING to get your head around it, just get in the players that you think will score the most points, subject to you being able to afford him. Don't think ''Oh no, I'm not going to get Malouda back in as that would mean that I have effectively lost 0.2 on him and I'd be admitting defeat about getting rid the first time.''

I would get rid of Elmo and VDV. As your other 4 mids are good I would think about downgrading VDV to a cheapo and get one or two decent defenders (e.g. Vidic and Kolorov)

      So, this week:
      VDV > Cleverly (for example)
      Elmo > Vidic

then, next week maybe Coleman > Kolorov unless Coleman is back in favour, which wouldn't surprise me.
