With an injury to Antonio Valencia earlier in the season moving Nani from the left wing to the opposite flank, Sir Alex Ferguson has had the choice of four players to field in the full-back position behind the flying Portugese wide man. Getting that balance to the team just right has proven to be an issue for the United boss, as he’s swapped John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Rafael time and again this season. In the past couple of weeks, though, the displays of the young Brazilian Rafael suggest that Fergie may have found the answer to his selection dilemma.

As the two chalkboards above show, whereas Ji-Sung Park, on the left wing, made just 44% of his passes in the final third -which allows Patrice Evra to push on forward behind him- Nani made 74% of his passes in the same area, which requires not just mobility from United’s right-back to cover the winger’s forages forward, but a defensive discipline to cover at the back.

Rafael possesses a natural ability for the role and has the advantage of youthful dynamism over his rivals for the spot and now, as he picks up experience, seems to be blossoming into a viable first-team option for the league leaders.

As the above Average Position chart against Blackburn shows, there’s not that much difference between Rafael (21) and Evra (3). However, a look at these chalkboards shows how impressive the defensive side of Rafael‘s recent performances have been.

He made fourteen tackles against Blackburn, winning thirteen, whereas on the opposite flank, Evra made seven tackles and won only four of them. Against Wigan the previous week, Evra grabbed the credit and a goal in the 2-0 win, but again Rafael put the shackles on the opposition. He made eight tackles and won seven, whereas Evra made none at all, in a performance that saw Rafael grab an assist and pick up all 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

As this Average Position map shows, Rafael played almost as a winger that day – a role that perhaps he is the most technically adept of all United’s right-backs to fill- allowing plenty width down the United right as Nani (17) continually drifted into the middle,

Despite these impressive displays, the real test is just around the corner for Rafael, with games against Arsenal and Chelsea following this week’s match at Blackpool. Selection for these showdowns will surely be testament to Ferguson’s faith in his ability and, given United’s current form, will make Rafael a real Fantasy prospect, at just £5.6m FPL.

Would have been quite a good week to play my wildcard this week but i think i may have missed the boat a little on some price rises.

Gonna hold the boat a little while on VDV, bought him at 7.7 so would lose quite alot, and i wouldn't be surprised if he comes back before expected.

I know i should have learnt my lesson long ago but i'm tempted to get Arshavin in for Arteta this week. Don't fancy MGP at all and don't really see many decent alternatives.

Well i said i don't fancy MGP, not sure he can keep up the high scores tbh and i don't like the idea of having an attacking blackburn player in my team. So that rules our Dunn too (who i wouldn't get anyway, too injury prone).

Brutn and N'Zogbia are both good players but they blow too hot and cold for me, i want someone who for the most part will play well in their good fixtures - it's a lottery with Wigan and WBA which will turn up which makes it a nightmare when picking your team.

Just noticed Andy Carroll is at 14/1 for top scorer - worth a little e/w punt that, I'd be suprised if he was 1st but he could certainly make 2nd or 3rd

Aye cos Rooney is firing them in at the moment eh? Carroll is scoring pretty regularly and much better than I thought, top scorer this season will be something of a lottery with most of the big guns having barren spells - the likes of Carroll or Elmander have a decent chance to get top 3

Also, the odds on those massive names won't be particularly good (I assume, anyway), so if you're going each way as Attila is, then you should be looking out for someone like Carroll. Makes perfect sense to me.

I thought my team was coming together nicely (1st season), but now I am stuck in what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Foster, Krul
    Kolarov, Dann, Jara, Coleman, Simpson
    Fabregas, VdV, Bale, Nani, Adam
    Carroll, Elmander, Tevez
6.1m in bank, 1 free transfer

I was going to use money to upgrade the defence, but now Fabs & VdV are out for a while I don't know whether to go Coleman/Simpson to someone like Vidic and/or transfer one (or both) of the injured big bucks midfielders out to someone (not sure who).

      I would do a 4 point hit:

      Jara > Vidic
      VDV > Nasri / NZog / MGP

May as well keep Fab now as he'll prob only miss this GW

You reckon Jara? Simpson and Coleman seem to not be getting a run, which is why I gave Elmo the chop last week to get Kolarov in. VDV out will cost me 0.5m, but it will probably be earnt back with a few drops whilst he is out.

I was thinking a 4 pt hit, which I have been trying to avoid for the last few weeks.

On Saturday morning assuming all games are on which is the more important transfer to make:

Coleman - might not play / underperforming
VDV - injured nad out for a few weeks most likely
    Adam - points drying up
Nolan - injured but possibly only 1 week out

Having looked through last years results from the cold/snow games the main thing that stands out is that CITEH scored more goals than anyone else:-

    4 v S'land | 3 v Bol | 2 v Che | 2 v Stoke | 3 v Everton.

Arsenal were second in this period but won more league points.

    Tot kept 4 CS's.

city are toooooooo defensive this season to score more than 2 in any game especially at home...
arsenal have always scored goals ag avg teams n always failed when the likes of chelsea n manutd come up ag them...
spurs 4 cs ...i doubt if they can keep 4 cs at the end of the season..their defense is AWFUL!!!

For all those seaarching for a suspension tightrope, I posted my version last night (it's still a work in progress - be kind).

There are a couple of mistakes* but I don't have the file to hand at the moment to make the edits, but will post it again once the CC fixtures are done if people are interested.

(*Marc Wilson from Stoke has now accrued 5 yellows and will serve a ban at the weekend as he has a rouge LC booking from Portsmouth early in the season that I'd missed, also Rodallega will be back from his suspension a week earlier than stated as the CC game will count as one of his)

Player performance is assessed by Press Association analysts, all of whom are ex-professional footballers, who attend each match. This assessment takes into account the quality of a player's overall performance and their contribution to the match result.

can someone tell me who are these ex-footballers???

Thought I'd mix it up a bit.... AP always realises it's me straight away anyway! Ruins the fun.

Errrr... Chelsea dominated the game, without creating too many real chances, although Kalou missed an open goal from 3 yards away. We could have had a couple of penalties, one for Tiote fouling Cashley in the box, and one for Enrique handling a Drogba cross.

I doubt many people who say that Newcastle were 'unlucky not to win', although Routledge did have a shot cleared off the line. Aside from Carroll's tap in, you didn't create too much.

It's good when you actually get going, but it's getting going that's the problem... You can go about an hour without finishing a game because of lagging out so often. And playing with people in a lobby is hard as people keep disappearing when you try to join a game.

But the game itself is awesome. Although there are often some ridiculously dodgy spawns, which is never fun.

Which transfer to make?.. Yes i knw i've got too many wba players... I'll do somethn bout that next week getting kolorav in for tamas and brunt in for ferguson/dempsy (because northwestern teams + blackpool home matches look a bad bet with the snowfall this week)... A few people seem unsure about Bale as a replacement for VDV. Will just chuck in there that it's a bit of a Nasri-Fabregas situation. When VDV is out, Bale steps up and takes most of the set pieces and is the hub of most attacks.

No coincidence that his big performances this season (e.g. Stoke, Inter and Blackurn) have been when VDV was either out or on the right wing.

To be fair (froma spurs fan, who watches every game but is obviously a bit biased ;o)), he is starting to find other ways to be effective. He is coming infield a lot more (first goal against arsenal) and using his right foot more (which is improving). He is also using more tricks and skills to get round defenders rather than just trying to hit it past them and run.

Sure defenders are doubling up on him and trying to stop him running down the line and even when he did get past, our strikers didnt seem to be getting on the end of the crosses so i was looking to get rid but the last few games he is starting to look more effective again.

      Foster,Krul,
      Bramble,O'Shea,Coleman,Jara,D.Collins,
      Nani,VdV,Cahill,Adam,Barton,
      Drogs,Tevez,Elmander.

Even without VdV's injury I had enough on my hands with that horrible defensive melange.I brought Bramble in for Elmo and incredibly he got injured. Now I have only two first choice DFs,Jara and D.Collins, with Coleman losing his place as well.So what do I do?Bramble/O'Shea->Vidic/Kolarov and VdV->Nasri for a 4 pt. hit. Will it be worth it?

Odemwingie plays for a side that scored 4 last weekend at Everton, and has a relatively easy game at Newcastle. Oh, and he takes penalties....

Dempsey plays for Fulham who struggle to score and have one of their hardest games of the season.

I'd go with Odemwingie every time.

No player who is out for three months will slot straight back into the first team the day they are able to play. He will need a couple of reserve outings first, then likely to start on the bench. Kyrgiagos is good until after Christmas.

So I've just been looking through the results from DEC/Jan the last few years. Wanted to do some serious stat work but fcuked up half way down and bolloks to starting again. But just looking at it like,

Newcastle have been really good during this period even the year they went down

Villa seem to be shocking, even with A Young getting player of the month DEC 08.

Arsenal are actually pretty decent and I might stay away from Fulham defence for a while longer

And in the last 3 seasons a Utd player has been player of the month for Jan

well, it is a hit, but i guess his price will be dropping a bit in the next few weeks, he's a top player so may be worth keeping hold, only if you can cope.

Problems are with Coleman who has probably lost his place now. Bosingwa isnt a nailed on starter. Mignolet has stopped playing.

Take a look at your first 11 this week, and as long as they are all going to play I would say you will be ok, maybe a 3-4-3 this week.

Probably not worth a 4 point hit for any defender when there are very few cleanies around.

As there are SIX games in the next 32 days (4 Dec, 12 Dec, 19 Dec, 26 Dec, 28 Dec and 1 Jan), it's too risky to play 'wait and see' with VDV. Sell him as soon as possible before he drops in price and get on another price riser. I bought him at 0.0% ownership and sorry to let go, but I would rather they let him heal properly rather than rushing him back in.

I expect them to struggle (more defensively) without Carragher, and looking at how easily Konchesky was torn apart the other day, I see very few clean sheets over the coming weeks.

Torres' finishing didn't fill me with confidence the other day, lets hope he can improve if they want to start picking up wins.

Exactly, who could you pick ya know.
Say what ya want about carra but he directs that back line and whatever defence was built is gonna be a bit leaky without em.
In midfield the only ones you'd put money on are Raul and Kuyt and ya know...
And Torres looks like he'll do something for a gw or 2 and then mope around like spoiled child for a few gw's more. He's just one of them players, I could tell within 10mins of the spurs game he wasn't up for it, then your just hoping for one moment which doesn't always come

In 2 weeks though no. And even then it could be a game or 2 before he's doing everything on the pitch again. So that's potentially 4gw's without much choice.

I actually made him comment on Barca and him admitting they are better than the PL.

Also Ipswich Town of 1981 would have had Barca for breakfast. They had Johnny Wark who had a ton passion, if it could be measured in mass. Much better than anyone this one touch muck.

if agger returns to 60%+ of his potential he should take his place. i'd fancy agger to play every home game he was fit for, i.e the games you'd want kyrgiakos the most

Well as in under this management. Agger was benched when Greek played earlier in the year and was shifted out wide.

The Greek will prob be number 1 until Carra comes back as he has experience and will prob be in charge of the defence in his absence.

the greek has never kept agger out. the only time the greek has played is when agger was needed lb or when agger was injured. yes woy fancied skrtel and carragher over agger, but he's never fancied kyrgiakos, now carragher is injured i can't see woy keeping a fit agger on the bench in favour of the skrtel kyrgiakos partnership. this is the perfect tiem to blood the skrtel agger partnership

yep. i think woy will play the fixtures to an extent. with agger getting all the home games. that imo is the important factor for staying away from kyrgiakos WHEN agger is back. for the next 3 he looks a decent option, even though i expect the likes of ashley young to tear him apart on monday

itd be a waste of a wildcard imo

elmo may start this week due to their injuries/bans so play him one last time then get rid if he doesnt (thats what im doing)

coleman and vdv out, kolarov and mgp in would be my advice for this week

having 2 wildcards to utilise a double game week is worth keeping unless u feel u have to make 5 or more changes
