With an injury to Antonio Valencia earlier in the season moving Nani from the left wing to the opposite flank, Sir Alex Ferguson has had the choice of four players to field in the full-back position behind the flying Portugese wide man. Getting that balance to the team just right has proven to be an issue for the United boss, as he’s swapped John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Rafael time and again this season. In the past couple of weeks, though, the displays of the young Brazilian Rafael suggest that Fergie may have found the answer to his selection dilemma.

As the two chalkboards above show, whereas Ji-Sung Park, on the left wing, made just 44% of his passes in the final third -which allows Patrice Evra to push on forward behind him- Nani made 74% of his passes in the same area, which requires not just mobility from United’s right-back to cover the winger’s forages forward, but a defensive discipline to cover at the back.

Rafael possesses a natural ability for the role and has the advantage of youthful dynamism over his rivals for the spot and now, as he picks up experience, seems to be blossoming into a viable first-team option for the league leaders.

As the above Average Position chart against Blackburn shows, there’s not that much difference between Rafael (21) and Evra (3). However, a look at these chalkboards shows how impressive the defensive side of Rafael‘s recent performances have been.

He made fourteen tackles against Blackburn, winning thirteen, whereas on the opposite flank, Evra made seven tackles and won only four of them. Against Wigan the previous week, Evra grabbed the credit and a goal in the 2-0 win, but again Rafael put the shackles on the opposition. He made eight tackles and won seven, whereas Evra made none at all, in a performance that saw Rafael grab an assist and pick up all 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

As this Average Position map shows, Rafael played almost as a winger that day – a role that perhaps he is the most technically adept of all United’s right-backs to fill- allowing plenty width down the United right as Nani (17) continually drifted into the middle,

Despite these impressive displays, the real test is just around the corner for Rafael, with games against Arsenal and Chelsea following this week’s match at Blackpool. Selection for these showdowns will surely be testament to Ferguson’s faith in his ability and, given United’s current form, will make Rafael a real Fantasy prospect, at just £5.6m FPL.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

he'll have dropped by the weekend so if you have a transfer in mind that doesn't involve any of the teams plaing in the carling cup or the europa league, do it now.

don't think the weather is going to be a factor after all

Serves 'Arry right for continually playing him when he wasn't 100% fit.

That said, I don't think you'll miss him that much. Defoe can just fill in VDV's role, getting on the end of Crouch's knockdowns etc.

Although it does mean you now have no one capable of taking a penalty in your side!

Advice on a defender...money no object, but don't want to blow all my cash on defender. Want to swap O Shea out and have a tidy sum in the pot. I'm thinking Kolorov is my best bet, but maybe Samba.

Have Baines -Cahill - Jara - Enrique (Foster and Carson as gk) already.

    Any ideas?

I'm fairly certain it will be one of them. Part of me is tempted to blow my cash on a luxury item like Vidic, but at the moment I think that Kolarov or Samba could easily outscore the more expensive ones.
Baines is my luxury item at the moment. He's going to be free kick and possibly even penalty-tastic while Mikel is out.

Yeah right. Popping a shoulder and dislocation are very different beasts. Dislocation will usually also tear tendons, ligaments and sometimes muscle tissue ( which is much quicker to repair)Any early recurrence can also lead to nerve damage. V. bad V.painful. Slow to heal because of white tissue damage. 🙂

Things move around so much in this game. A few weeks ago we all wanted 7 midfielders yet now we are all loaded and scratching around looking at players like MGP and Kuyt (or maybe that ones just me!). Oh and now we all want 4 or 5 strikers. This aint easy.
I may just buy 5 expensive defenders in January and go budget 5 up front and see how good/awful/badly I do.

        * that's for if you have fewer than 5 yellows. Say you have 6 yellows, you keep them until another date which I can't be arsed to find, March I think.

It doesn't get reset, but instead of 5 cards being needed for a suspension it goes to 10 cards.

Australia's first match at the Asian Cup isn't until Jan 10th.

Think it is worth the risk getting Cahill in for VDV or Fabs?

Also have to bin Coleman, so could hang onto both.

As bad as they're playin then it has to be Malouda, Chelsea cover is something you will need as, even as a Man U fan enjoying it, their poor form wont last forever

Quite a lot of love for David Dunn about on here. Wouldn't touch him with a bargepole, unless of course you are looking to collect yet another injured player and add to your squad.

Jagielka has returned 4 points in his last 5 games, appaling for a 5.7m defender. Moyesie will sort them out, surely??

      I actually agree.

Christmas schedule is incredibly busy, and picking an injury prone player is mad. He gets injured, and he's likely to be sitting on your bench as you desperately try to paper over the cracks in your team.

No love for MGP then? Seems common among the Rovers fans, bit of a worry cos I really want MGP (been burnt far to many times in the past by Dunny, including GW1 this season.)

I wouldn't put anyone off getting Pedersen, he'll do just fine but if Dunn stays fit he will outscore him. BIG if obviously but i ain't got too much to lose. Mind you i wouldn't want to try and convince anyone else to follow suit as there are probably too many risks

good to see fake Lucas back on twitter after a short break

Nando constantly looking forlorn. He'll leave. Dont blame him. Even I couldnt stomach partnering N'Goals. Its like Pele & Michael Ricketts.

Lack of updates due to Mr Roy banning me from Twitter. Said I should concentrate on improving my game, sent me 14 DVDs of Dickson Etuhu.

Anybody know if there are more goals in hot weather or in cold weather. So many players from hot Countries playing in the premiership it must have more of an affect on Chelsea, Arsenal, ManCity although Arshavin seems more alert in cold weather and Tevez says he likes cold weather although snood and points last week for MrT seems to show he don't really like playing in the cold. So if you have a wild card have to pick Russians and Larsson and the like anyone name ending in son and vic and scots and norwegians will play rings around latin or african origin in this cold spell. Well its a theory but can not find any data on cold weather and goal return for different nationalities.

    Foster (Krul)
    Vidic Alcaraz Simpson (Coleman Mummy)
    Nani Malouda NZogbia Adam (VDV)
    Carroll Piquionne Drogba

    Bank: 6.6

Which transfers would you most recommend please? 2 transfers would mean a 4 point hit:

A: Mummy or Coleman > Kolarov
    B: VDV > Gamst Pedersen
    C: VDV > Etherington
    D: Mummy > Bardsley
    E: Piquionne > Tevez

    I'm currently thinking B, possibly A+B
