A lofty Serbian scapegoat of a striker endears himself to the Birmingham faithful by scuffing a winning goal against local rivals Villa to seal passage to the last four of the Carling Cup. The Baggies won’t be there to meet them however, they bounced out to Championship Ipswich, paying the price for a second string eleven by whimpering out to a 1-0 deficit.

The more illustrious backdrop of the Europa League meanwhile, saw Man City progress to the last 32 with a decisive victory and a brace for the emerging Mario Balotelli and some solo brilliance from the forgotten Adam Johnson…

Alex McLeish demonstrated his commitment to the competition by fielding a full strength side against Villa at St Andrews. Alexander Hleb missed out through injury, allowing Nikola Zigic to come in up front. Zigic once again failed to convince and was often the target for the home crowd’s frustration – that was of course before his late deflected winner. That goal could well buy him further opportunities to lead the attack, starting with the home clash with Spurs this weekend, although much will depend on Hleb’s availability.

Seb Larsson, the scorer of last night’s opening goal from the spot suffered what appeared to be a groin injury and he looks a likely doubt for the visit of Spurs. Craig Gardner, the crowd favourite who was greeted with a warm welcome on a freezing night when he replaced Lee Bowyer on the hour-mark, could well profit with a start as a result.

Gerard Houllier also put out, what is for him right now, a strong side. Ciaran Clark, Barry Bannan and Jonathan Hogg were once again given opportunities in an inexperienced midfield, keeping the likes of Robert Pires and Simon Ireland benched. Gabby Agbonlahor returned to lead the attack with Carew ousted.

Ashley Young picked up his fifth booking of the season in last night’s game and will miss the trip to Anfield this weekend – a major blow for Houllier’s men and a factor that surely boosts Liverpool’s clean sheet potential for the Gameweek. James Collins picked up his fourth booking and is one yellow away from a ban.

Barry Bannan also picked up a groin problem with Houllier revealing that will go into the weekend as another possible absentee.

Roberto Di Matteo’s approach to their Quarter-Final at Ipswich certainly differed to the Baggies’ Midland rivals. The Italian fielded an array of second string players including Boaz Myhill in goal, Abdoulaye Meite and James Hurst in defence, while Steven Reid and Simon Cox also earned opportunities. From a Fantasy perspective there was little to gain from the teamsheet or performance; West Brom were disappointing but it seems unlikely to impact on their showing when Newcastle visit at the weekend. Fantasy Managers will at least have been pleased to see the likes of Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie rested here – they looked nailed-on for starts at the Hawthorns against the Magpies and will surely be the protagonists in attacking terms.

Mario Balotelli’s brace grabbed the headlines in the 3-0 Europa League win over Salzburg. City put on a strong performance with the Italian striker looking a menace throughout – his goals, form assists from Pablo Zabaleta and Patrick Vieira – will further boost his reputation and he is undoubtedly on our radars as an alternative to Carlos Tevez for City’s forthcoming run of kind opponents.

The bulk of Roberto Mancini’s post match comments were not surprisingly reserved for Balotelli…

“Mario can play better than that…I am delighted with the goals he scored but he can play better. The fact that he didn’t celebrate is just him. It is normal for him to score. He does it every day. I think he can run more, take more of his chances and choose different options sometimes when passing. I know there is more to come.”

Adam Johnson was also on the manager’s mind after he staked a claim for a regular starting role with a superb solo effort for City’s third. Mancini was happy to acknowledge Johnson’s contribution but once again, couldn’t resist playing down the winger’s ability…

“They [Johnson and Balotelli] could become among the best players in the world, strong players. They need to work hard all the time. They both scored fine goals but they must carry on…In years to come Adam may look back and think ‘Roberto was correct’. I hope that he knows I say these things because I believe in Adam.”

Whether Mancini beleives in him enough to hand him another start at the weekend is doubtful; Johnson could well find himself back on the bench for the visit of Bolton, as Mancini seems set to draft David Silva back into his starting XI having rested him against Salzburg. The likes of Aleksandar Kolarov, Gareth Barry, Nigel De Jong, Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart and of course Carlos Tevez, are all set for recalls against the in-form Trotters; all were rested in last night’s game. Balotelli could well be a doubt for City with reports of a slight hamstring problem.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Malouda or Essien?

From what I heard, Malouda was very lively last GW, however, Essien is well rested and left on a high...

If I were to do this I am stuck wondering whether or not to trade VDV or Cahill out, with word on VDV's injury not being as serious I'm more tempted on trading Cahill out. Crazy talk?

+1 I dumped Adam and have regretted it since, hoping MGP was a worth while trade.

Thing is with Adam, he takes all the set plays and because of that is a points magnet whenever he plays... however it was the tough fixtures he has ahead that resulted in my trade for MGP.

Sheffield United game and a few others called off already for 'safety reasons'. Pitch is fine apparently but the conditions around the ground (I imagine they mean transport etc) are deemed not safe enough for the game to go ahead at the weekend.
May have a bearing on the Prem - if they let us know this early it's not too bad.

I never understand this 'not safe enough' nonsense... surely fans can make their minds up on their own whether they, as individuals, can get to a stadium safely! If they can't, then they would stay at home.

Balls. That early VDV to Nasri transfer isn't looking particularly inspired right now...

What the feck was Wenger thinking anyway? Why bring on your best player, on current form, at the end of a meaningless Carling Cup game where the result was already in the bag? Fecking numpty.

I think they are to be honest... If you make early transfers all season it makes a massive difference to your team value.

I made early transfers throughout the entirety of last season, and it meant that I could have an absolutely obscene team for the final few weeks of the season.

i can see that but it requires being lucky with injuries and weather at this stage of the season

im quite happy focusing on just points and working with what ive got, theres always a nice enough combo with good rotation out there if you look hard enough

Obviously it's not advisable doing it if the player has a midweek game, but if he doesn't the chances of him getting injured in the week are very slim..

In my defence, I didn't think that Nasri would feature at all against Wigan on Tuesday. Bloody Wenger!!

      Ah where to begin......
Actually I have post-traumatic stress over it and have blacked it all out. Basically for the first six weeks football behaved itself and was in some ways predictable - since then football has been mental and selecting a team (particularly the captain) has become something of a lottery. One I keep losing at the moment, plenty of time yet for a resurgence, though I bet Hitler said that when Ivan was knocking at his bunker door. [not a double entendre]

On a serious note no why would it annoy me in the slightest. My grievance with Beckham is the brand and how the brand influences peoples view of his ability on the field.

And its not a debate whether any of us consider him to be stupid. He is. But he has spent 15 years in the limelight with a media coach and learning speeches.

    SammyC if your in

will you explain this comment you made a while back to me in relation to balck ops

Try using hardline pro with sam turret, care package and sentry gun. It’s a massive flaw, you get 3 out of 4 attempts (assuming you definitely re-roll the turrent and sentry) at care packages for just 5 kills, it’s soo easy.

what is a re-roll? and well...also all the rest too

you are saying set my killstreaks to those three and my perk to hardline pro?

You can re-roll care packages to get something different with one of the pro perks. hardline pro I think

      Okay,

Hardline Pro allows you to take another chance on your care packages. So if you are using hardline pro, and you care package comes down as something useless like Ammo, then you can 're-roll' and the care package will change to another random killstreak reward. Obviously it may be something undesirable again, but there's a chance that you could luck out and get Dogs or a Chopper Gunner.

The same works with SAM Turrets and Sentry Guns, so if you set your killstreak rewards to those three, you basically have 3/4 shots at getting something generally awesome out of it, if you 're-roll' on the SAM turret and the sentry gun every time.

I haven't tried it myself, but the theory is solid..

WOAH, class, so it doesnt even have to be the 'care package' kill streak

if i just set my three sam turret , care package and sentry gun
i can re do every time? Brilliant!!!!

altho, id never get enough of a killstreak to get sentry gun, its high up isnt it?

        but the other 2! sweet!

I still don't think it's that great. I really like the SAM turret but it takes too long to drop. I never use any of the killstreaks where I have to wait for something to drop from the air as I mainly play TDM. I want to press right on the D-pad, get my killstreak up and carry on killing.

Pretty much. Sentry guns are only 5 kills with hardline (pro)... So you basically have to get 5 kills and you have 3/4 shots at getting a top killstreak reward, without even getting close to the 10 kills normally needed for something like Dogs.

Its a little grenade (one of the non lethal tactical grenades) that you throw out, it makes gunfire noise and appears on the enemy's radar like someone firing so they all come running over for a look generally to find me above them with an RPG. Absolutely brilliant little yoke, use it when you can get a nice vantage point and preferably where the enemy only has one access route (look for cul de sac type areas)

You throw it and it imitates gun fire so theres lots of red dots on the enemies mini maps. I've only ever seen one get used against me once and I went on to get owned. Had no idea where the enemies were

Any reason why there's no love for Brunt as a VdV replacement? He has good fixtures and a high average per game.

    Hi guys,
Been ‘snowed’ all week (sorry!) and would really love some quick advice:
    Foster/Hanehmann
    Kolorov/Coleman/Konchesky/Knight/Simpson
    Fabregas/VdV/Lee/Nzogbia/Nani
    Drogba/Tevez/Carroll
1 free trade – 0.2 in the bank

    Thinking VdV -> Nasri
    Lee -> Pederson

But worried about having Nasri and Fab for UTD away
Any news on Fab and VdV’s injuries?
    Thanks

fabs may also be back next week

nasri has a knock but should play

i wouldnt get rid of lee before gwk20, im keeping elmander due to their nice fixtures after city

agree with getting MGP in tho

Still one away, he wasn't booked or sent off in the game it was a post match suspension.

From Dean in Luton, via text:

"As much as I'd love to see it here, if Fifa want to prove this is a global game and have a lasting effect worldwide, Russia and Qatar should be the hosts. It's the World Cup, let's take it around the world. "

im a bristol city fan, if we get the world cup, city move to a nice shiny plastic solless ground like all the others ive visited over the last few years, id prefer to stay at ashton gate with a bit of atmosphere every other saturday

to me thats more important than 4weeks of football in 6 years time

Can you imagine if Blatter reads out the word 'Russia', and they're drawn in the same group as Nigeria....

I bet the Nigerian players would absolutely love playing at Zenit's stadium against Russia. That would be really awesome for them.

Russia is a corrupt, autocratic kleptocracy and a "virtual mafia state" - according to Wikileaks documents.

It murders journalists, shakes down businesses and assassinates people in other countries.

And there's the vile racism too. You might as well give the World Cup to Zimbabwe as Russia.

They should do. It's been a long time since the World Cup went to a dictatorship, thankfully. And that one was fixed by the Argentine military junta.
