Chris Hughton has “parted company” with Newcastle United this afternoon with the club announcing that the board “now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.”

Hughton’s departure follows an appalling run of form, covered in depth on these pages over the last 24 hours, that culminated in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at West Brom, a display which ultimately proved the final straw for Newcastle’s board.

Inevitably Martin O’Neil’s name has been put forward as a potential replacement although the club have however stated that the search is yet to begin…

“The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”

In Fantasy terms the impact is likely to be restricted to the effects on striker Andy Carroll who is owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League Managers. Carroll’s form has been maintained throughout Newcastle’s poor run of results and if the new manager can successfully find him a strike partner, that should be beneficial from a Fantasy perspective. A switch to 4-4-2 and a change of system may well reduce Kevin Nolan’s potential however.

Depending on the successful candidate, things may also improve defensively and, with starting roles in the central area up for grabs, a new broom could bring changes in with Sol Campbell, Steven Taylor, Fabio Coloccini and Mike Williamson all vying for two positions.

It’s all pure speculation right now of course, but a change, whether you agree with the decision to sack Hughton or not, should alter the tactics and shape in place in the Newcastle ranks, reseting the potential of some mid-price Fantasy assets along the way.

In the short-term, it will be interesting to assess the reaction of players and fans to the decision when Liverpool arrive at St James’ Park this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Bit rough to sack a guy when he no less than five first team players missing. Include Ben Arfa and it's six.

Bosingwa not guaranteed to play - Ferreira could be picked. They're playing Spurs next - can't see either of those two stopping Bale on that side. I'd sell Alex for defender of another team like Sunderland or Man City.

Hugton sacked - what a joke. Ashley is a fat twat.

Back to Bale - Foster punches Bale’s freekick back the way it comes and falls to Bassong who makes it 1-0. Bale assist without a shadow of a doubt if you go by FPL rules. People need to get over it and move on.

        Jeeze.

Those have and always will be assists. There's a bit of debate about whether or not it hit the Bir defender, and if it did whether it was significant enough - and that's fair enough. But these bandwagon posts like yours and "but it was a cross not a shot!!!!" are just retarded and completely irrelevant

Oh same price, i didn't realize that. Johnson edges the fixtures, you wouldn't need to bench him for any upcoming games. However Baines is in form and takes some set pieces, even when Arteta is in the side. Tough call though.

Saw this breaking news on the big screens in the SU (watching last nights ashes - KP what a hero).

It's ridiculous, current form or not this is a team that was in the Championship last year having been relegated. They've been playing some pretty nice football and the injured/suspended players hasn't helped recently. Beating Arsenal and drawing with Chelsea isn't too shabby at all.

While I don't really like the thought of Newcastle going down (i know a fair few fans), I wouldn't mind seeing them relegated because of a bad Mike Ashley decision.

              Has RBJ stolen Atilla's screen-name? 🙂

What happened to Ashley's attempts to sell the club, has he given up on that idea now? Still wants too much money?

It's just that Hughton was the perfect manager for someone trying to sell up - short-term contact, (relatively) low wages, easy for a new owner to replace him with his own man (never quite understood why that happens, but always seems to be cited as important.)

Ashley and Newcastle fans in general expect way too much.

They have a squad that is mid-table/regulation fodder at best, and hughton has done wonders since he's been put in charge.

Ashley thinks they should be title or top 4 contenders, so do some fans. Hughton didn't get on with Nolan, and he is "mr.newcastle"

Newcastle's form is better than a number of other premiership teams in the six game form guide (not in the bottom three and in fact level with Chelsea).

I you look at 8 game guide the stats are:

    P 8 W 3 D 2 L 3

Hardly appalling form is it. When you consider that included games against Chelsea and Arsenal not bad at all for a newly promoted side.

That is no reason to sack a manager even if they had a full strength team available to them. Unless Ashley has a new v.good manager lined up already then this is madness.

There's no Champions League in January, and as both teams are out of the Carling Cup, they could they play it when the Carling Cup semis are being played (Jan 11th/12th or Jan 25th/26th). That's purely guesswork though.

Joke that they sacked him, it should be Mike Ashley out of the club.

Its tough to think of who is going to come in. I feel for yas, i really do. Hopefully they get someone good, do you think Shearer will get it?

They sacked Hughton apparently because he doesnt have enough Premier League experience, so it would logically suggest no to Shearer. Then again logic and that fat cockney turd burglar Ashley are rare acquaintances.

Captain choice is going to be a tough one next week with Nani and Nasri up against each other, and ditto Drogba and Bale
