Chris Hughton has “parted company” with Newcastle United this afternoon with the club announcing that the board “now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.”

Hughton’s departure follows an appalling run of form, covered in depth on these pages over the last 24 hours, that culminated in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at West Brom, a display which ultimately proved the final straw for Newcastle’s board.

Inevitably Martin O’Neil’s name has been put forward as a potential replacement although the club have however stated that the search is yet to begin…

“The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”

In Fantasy terms the impact is likely to be restricted to the effects on striker Andy Carroll who is owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League Managers. Carroll’s form has been maintained throughout Newcastle’s poor run of results and if the new manager can successfully find him a strike partner, that should be beneficial from a Fantasy perspective. A switch to 4-4-2 and a change of system may well reduce Kevin Nolan’s potential however.

Depending on the successful candidate, things may also improve defensively and, with starting roles in the central area up for grabs, a new broom could bring changes in with Sol Campbell, Steven Taylor, Fabio Coloccini and Mike Williamson all vying for two positions.

It’s all pure speculation right now of course, but a change, whether you agree with the decision to sack Hughton or not, should alter the tactics and shape in place in the Newcastle ranks, reseting the potential of some mid-price Fantasy assets along the way.

In the short-term, it will be interesting to assess the reaction of players and fans to the decision when Liverpool arrive at St James’ Park this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

While the decision to sack Hughton I think to be ludicrous, I think Ashley has obviously sorted out his priorities since this morning...

I'm very disappointed! Penguin bars are now about the size of a postage stamp. When did that happen? So cheesed off I made a jelly for comfort eating later when I get the ice cream.

No it's not. From the rules:

If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking player shooting or crossing the ball receives the assist if a goal directly ensues.

The goalkeeper parried the ball from a cross to the attacking player and a goal directly ensued.

      I don't have Bale BTW.

We went to the FPL with this. They made it clear that Foster palmed the ball into Bassong's path and therefore the assist stands. It's taken a while and a good few viewings from different angles to discover that. They even sent me a screengrab to confirm Foster's touch.

I haven't got Bale either. Granville has. That should explain why I was cross enough to contact the FPL.

What about a screen grab to disprove the idea that Foster palmed the ball onto the Birmingham defender (I think it was Ridgewell)? Because that's the issue I have. The rules say that an assist is awarded after a keeper parries a cross, so that's fair enough, but I'm pretty sure that the ball hit both Foster and Ridgewell. How else would the ball go directly back in the direction it came from? Foster was trying to punch the ball out of danger. Unless he overestimated how far away the ball was, and it hit the base of his palm or even lower arm...

I can't view the goal again right now but will later. I too seem to remember the ball striking a defender en route to Bassong. I guess the issue is whether this second deflection was enough to change the direction of the ball following the parry from Foster.

I remember it too and at the time didn't see how it could be given. it did make enough of a deflection to go onto bassong after hitting the brum def.

his start price is based on last years performance and his ability as a whole

last season he was scoring goals for fun and as a striker is undoubtedly one of the best in the world

so he wont be priced below someone like zamora or bent

I have $ sign on my keyboard so i dont bother putting pound... Well he started at $11.5 .. Why did he went up $0.4 even though he failed as a striker this season.. scored only 5 goals and 5 assits.. He surely is under performing...

its not really about performance tho its about people transferring him in

if enough transfer him in over a certain period of time he will price rise (by 0.1) if enough people sell him over a period of time hell price fall (again by 0.1)

depends how many people bought/sold him

its based on transfers in and transfers out,
so he was transfered in so much on four occasion they he went up by 0.1 on different occasions (Actually its more likely he went up a lot more but that transfers out have also brought his price down too)

basically its like a market, demand goes up, price goes up, demand goes down!

and the invisible hand makes it all alright!

See the FISO crack the code website or read some of Adam Smiths works to read exactly how it works!

Repost kind of, just to take your minds off Ashley's managerial wishlist for a sec (see first post of this page lol)

Do we reckon the following will start for arsenal in a mustwin CL match on wednesday?

Nasri (great form, arsenal's best player at the mo)
    Arshavin
Walcott (doesnt get many games in PL, should start in CL?)
RVP (see walcott, also needs match minutes under his belt)
Chamakh (excellent CL record this year, playing well as shown by 2BP at weekend)
    Bendtner

It might be 'must win', but it's certainly not difficult. At home to a team without a single point.

Chamakh will start, but Wenger will have learned from the Fabregas incident not to risk Nasri.

Walcott will probably play as well. Arshavin as well.

          Yes.

          .........Nasri........

          RVP.....Cham.....Arsh

RVP/Cham or RVP/ARSH can switch around.

Didn't see the Bale assist, but the Carroll one was definitely an assist, I am not an owner and was cursing the goal, but despite handballing it, he got away with it, he shot, caused the keeper to save, Loveinpants knocked it in, assist.

Just heard about Hughton's sacking.. such a joke club to bizarrely sack a manager of a newly promoted side sitting comfortably 11th ahead of Pool, Everton and Villa..not to mention they had arguably 6 first choice players unavailable yesterday.
Methinks they must have someone lined up already.

RBJ, I get so jealous with all your betting talk! I used to be well into the bookies on a Saturday arvo when I lived back home. One of the things I miss most. The dogs, horses and of course the footy!

Here in Philadelphia we can't bet,it's not legal...or something. Online betting just isn't nearly as much fun. Some of the characters in the bookies were proper losers, but that was half the fun of it.
