The Watchlist – our mid-term playing recommendations – were updated yesterday with a minor tweak following earlier today. You can find these rankings in your right sidebar on the frontpage of the site.

This week shows plenty of movement in the Defensive rankings with Liverpool and Blackburn’s recent clean sheets prompting further climbs for their assets. While the Midfield top five remains untouched, there is a shuffle amongst the Forwards where Carlos Tevez pays the price for his one game ban and Andy Carroll falls from our top three. That means it’s Liverpool again who climb to the top of this table…

Let’s start between the posts where Joe Hart and Paul Robinson stand their ground at the pinnacle of the Goalkeeper rankings – form and fixtures keep them top of the pile. Pepe Reina, an expensive option but with superb fixtures and 4 clean sheets in 7, is their nearest rival. Craig Gordon and Ben Foster continue to offer value below him.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s ban and subsequent missing Gameweek this weekend sees him toppled in our Defender rankings with Liverpool’s Solios Kyrgiakos assuming his mantle with his strong fixtures, Bonus Point potential and a hefty goal threat. Outstanding form and decent fixtures has Leighton Baines climbing to second, with team-mate Seamus Coleman, back in favour on the right of midfield, our highest new entry.

Chris Samba’s fixtures has him installed in third spot with Kolarov holding on, along with United’s Rafael, to complete our top five defenders. Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Bolton’s Gary Cahill provide some low and mid-price options further down.

There’s no movement in the Midfield top five, with Nani and Samir Nasri holding to top spots despite a run of difficult fixtures to come. West Brom’s Chris Brunt – with strong form – and City’s David Silva – with kind fixtures – get closest. Florent Malouda is a major casualty of Chelsea’s continued slump as he drops down the rankings with poor form and an array of tough opponents to come. Birmingham’s Craig Gardner whose goal threat overshadows a difficult run of forthcoming fixtures, is our highest new consideration.

Look out for a shake-up in Midfield soon – the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Cesc Fabregas are all due back from injuries within the fortnight. Their arrival back in the Watchlist will certainly cause a major shuffle and could impact on the potential of others – particularly Samir Nasri and, in the Forward rankings, Didier Drogba; both players will have their role on set-pieces reduced and their spot-kick duties will also come under threat.

We also have to consider the Asian Cup and the absence of Tim Cahill during this spell. We know that Cahill will depart before the tournament in January to join up with the Socceroos and the latest from David Moyes indicates that this will be in the New Year which could well mean another five Gameweeks. Cahill remains high in the Watchlist then but that’s likely to change next week once the home fixture with Wigan has passed.

Moving up front and, like Kolarov, Carlos Tevez suffers a drop in the Forward rankings off the back of his suspension for Gameweek 17, with Fernando Torres taking top spot with a run of kind home opponents to come. Expect that pair to contend the top two for several weeks, unless Drogba can rediscover form or Dimitar Berbatov/Wayne Rooney catch fire.

Lower down, Newcastle’s Andy Carroll suffers his biggest drop of the season to fall from the top three with Bolton’s Johan Elmander and West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie the big climbers with form and fixtures falling nicely for them. The likes of Mario Balotelli, Asamoah Gyan and Jermain Defoe all enjoy climbs. The latter should have confidence off the back of last night’s brace but has Chelsea and two away games to come next, which tempers his appeal somewhat.

As always, keep an eye on the rankings leading up to the weekend – a full update will arrive post Gameweek on Tuesday but there could be daily changes up until then once the team news starts dripping in later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yes but to be fair I haven't factored that in for Cahill as yet as we're still waiting on confirmation of when he will depart. Seems likely we will get 3 more games max from him but until we know, I've not allowed it to have an impact on Cahill's potential. That will change next week though.

Yep, once he's back this is something we will look at. We need a more recent example of Lampard back in though I reckon - it's been so long since he started in a Chelsea side - I think it would make any comparison more valid.

Arshavin is a right nob, giving this to the press:

"We struggle all the time in defence," groaned Andrey Arshavin in the build-up to tonight showdown, adding: "Of course we try to improve but we can't." That may sound like a criticism of the club's defenders or its coaching methods but the Russian muddied the waters by confessing that he and other lazy midfielders bear some of the blame. "Sometimes I can't run and that's why I let my defenders make the cross and get forward to score," admitted Arshavin, who sadly neglected to explain exactly why he sometimes can't run.

He should be ok for December, very, very hard to say with all the upheaval going on. If I had him I'd certainly be looking for alternatives given the mean fixtures and unpredictability of a Newcastle clean sheet. Any team that gets a CS away at Arsenal and not at home to Wigan, Blackpool or Stoke is not goalkeeper material. 🙂

finally learnt why players get a yellow for taking their shirt off.

Under Blatter, starting in 2004, the game implemented the booking of players who remove their shirts after scoring a goal, as well as those who are guilty of 'over-zealous celebrations'. The rationale for this rule change is that football is a global sport, and thus the sensibilities of conservative nations and spectators must be respected.

I feel really weird having 7.0 in the bank, time to splash some cash I think!

    Hart (Foster)
    Dann Samba Konchesky (Elmo Williamson)
    Bale Cahill Nani Nasri (Ferguson)
    Elmander Carroll Tevez

I was thinking Elmo -> Baines for this week and going 4-4-2 while Tevez is out, even though my 3 defenders have away games they are not exactly against the strongest opposition.

I have no idea who to captain though, I was thinking Nani... but would it be crazy of me to captain Baines in the hope of a CS, BPs and maybe an assist in there somewhere too?

I think whoever you choose as captain will make a huge difference this gameweek. I can't see many players doing well, or if they do it will be luck. I'm finding it difficult to choose - the best I can do is Elmander and I still don't think he will get big points.

Baines would be a risk but I would definately go for it. Good Luck! lol

once artetas back hes not guaranteed....no point having a benched player on ur bench

either jones or nelsen if u want a bburn defender...id prbly look at nelsen much more a goal/assist threat even tho jones is playing in midfield

Pardew, seriously I cant talk about it. It makes me angry and upset at the same time, its not the place to say so here as others love it...but I actually feel like having a stomping fit! What the f**k is the guy doing!

But anyway-think change makes sense? Krul's not been great!

It certainly does make sense. As I said earlier we are so difficult to predict for cleansheets - I mean getting the CS away at Arsenal and not home against Wigan, Blackpool or Stoke is just too mental to depend on. Besides there is bound to be an awful lot of upheaval in the near future.

I think we're probably looking at the drop again, Pardew has less than 8% of the vote on the fans website so he isn't going to be liked. No doubt they will be on his case as soon as he arrives, he goes someone like JFK comes in. Bleurgh not looking good at all.
We should take a leaf from the Manc's books and form a proper football club like FC United.

i've just read about his deal with platini to ensure the 2018 world cup went to europe. what a load of balls all these agreements, promises etc. every country should be allowed to vote and the best proposal picked, possibly with things like never havign hosted it before taken into account but that's it.

you cou;d potentially have no strikers this week... i would get rid of Piquionne. Elmander or Davies for the best fixture this week, although Odemwingie is a good bet too. also u might want to upgrade the likes of Hughes and Givet - not very fashionable choices imo

    Foster (Gilks)
    Hangeland Jags Baptiste (Kol Simpson)
    Nasri Nani MGP Silva N’Zog
    Berbs Torres (Tev)

No transfers made this week and none currently planned as I’ve made far too many this season. Planning to do Hangeland -> Big Greek next week. Any thoughts? I need to plan to bring Fabs in once fit but have a meagre 0.4 in the bank. Also captain choice is a nightmare!

Good thing that you are not going to make transfers. That is an extreme of transfer making.

Anyway.... some time soon I would do Berbs > Odem. I wouldn't try too hard to get Fabs, he'll play for a couple of weeks and then get injured

      Hangeland>Kr looks a good move.

I would leave Fabs until new year, maybe fitting him in with w/c would be easier. 4 yellow cards, heavy Xmas roster with Wenger maybe (finally) looking to manage his minutes carefully. Every time I re-jig my roster to get him in he limps off for another 4 weeks.
