Though the strength in depth of Man City’s expensively-assembled squad makes many of Roberto Mancini’s players a source of Fantasy frustration, eleven starts in the past twelve games suggest otherwise in the case of David Silva. With Mancini’s preference for three defensive midfielders in the City starting XI, the Spaniard offers the creative flair, supplying the preferred front pairing of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli.

With City just three points off the Premier League summit right now, a run of fixtures over the New Year that reads (whm, EVE, new, AVL, Blp, ars) give Mancini the chance to firmly establish their top-four credentials and help satisfy owner Sheikh Monsour’s thirst for Champions League qualification. If the team continue to play with a defensive solidity that has seen Joe Hart keep 8 clean sheets already this season, they certainly have the quality in the final third of the field to make a difference; with Silva’s remarkable pace and nimble feet at the heart of their attacking moves, expect the Spanish international to pop up with an assist or two and perhaps make the score sheet.

Priced at £8.5million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Silva owners would naturally insist on a decent return from their investment and with a slightly underwhelming return of 51 points so far this season, his acquisition might be questioned. However, with midfield big-hitters Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Frank Lampard and Rafael Van der Vaart all still fighting their way back from injuries, Mikel Arteta suspended and Tim Cahill set to depart for the Asia Cup at the end of the month, Silva’s time to prove himself as a weighty asset could well be nigh.

Silva’s low FPL ownership of just 2.1% is one of the player’s most appealing attributes. With Gareth Bale, Nani, Florent Malouda and Samir Nasri apparently all the rage this Christmas, David Silva could be the key “differential” to aid your Fantasy Team. Though it just depends whether you’re the kind of person who can tolerate a snood…

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Just not sure Silva will get enough points with other players of similar price doing a bit more. He's a differential but a bit of a gamble.

Seems to me that this week has too many question marks about who to bring in, take out etc. I'm seriously thinking of just leaving it and have 2 next week wen Liv/City/Spurs/Sun look decent for a few weeks. The only thing that's tempting is Pantsil, I know I said a while back that I dont fancy Fulham over the Christmas but he was gold for me last year. Is he in direct comp with Salcido? When's he due back then?

He's not in comp with Salcido, they play on opposite sides. Pantsil came on because Salcido got injured and Baird moved to LB while Pantsil took his spot on the right. The Fulham boards say that Pantsil should be nailed on here on out, but you never know with Hughes. I know all this because I was unlucky enough to get in Salcido before the Brum game. Salcido is due back this weekend...

Ok, last gw I went against the Captains Poll and it bit me in the ARSEnal.

This week poll says Cahill. He very seldom scores AND assists in the same game. Not a BP magnet either. So maybe if his scoring streak continues a goal/no CS/90min played = 7x2 =14. Nothing to write home about.

    Everyone happy with this return?

there really isnt a better one, wigan defence away can be shaky and he could easily score twice

in my eyes a guy who usually scores a goal a game, against such weak opposition could easily score more!

the position he takes means assists are unlikely, but more goals, pretty possible!!

bring on cahill and his record breaking 6!

Its snot that im happy with 14, but in my eyes, i should get at least 14, possible BPs and who knows what else!

Not sure I agree with that. There isnt anything stopping Cahill scoring two goals in a game, is there? Tevez usually scores only once a game too, but occassionally gets 2. In the past Cahill(C) has rewarded me

ive captained cahill a couple of times and done ok but never great.

ive captained tevez a couple of times and he has been awesome.

wigan are unpredictable. i can see them scoring and nzogbia/baines, being amongst the bonus.

its all about whats most likely and to me torres is more likely to outscore cahill this week. just my opinion

im def keeping tevez as i dont want to waste a transfer by bringing him in later.

for me drogba has to go. chelsea are poor, fixtures are bad, he still looks injured to me, and his price continues to drop.

im more than happy to play jones. i didnt last week and he ended up with full bonus!

This Tevez Drogba Torres shuffle seems to be popular on here this week. I've considered it myself as I don't have any other pressing transfers, but I might just do Drogba to Torres and effectively save a transfer that way.

I'd look into getting rid of Elmo though Snoochie and definitely play albrighton this week..

I don't like your defences chances of returning many points, I would look to ship out Gohouri, you have AlHabsi and double Wigan coverage is a bad idea.

Gohouri to Foley I would suggest, at least he's OOP for a 4.0.

yeah my defence is pretty poor, looking to ship in kolarov and kyrgiakos after this week, so gohouri will be goin then, might consider foley also to leave me a back 5 eventually of

coleman bardsley foley kolarov and kyrgiakos

might just bench gohouri and play simspon and hope for best then i'll have 2 free transfers next week

Has anyone seen that sexual health ad on this site in the pop ups where there is a dude looking at another dude, saying "we both know where this is headed, but neither of us have a condom, but it could be the most unforgettable night of our lives...", and thought, that's very presumptious, he comes into shot (no pun intended) sees the other guy, they both take one look, and already it's "we both know where this is headed", what ever happened to buying a guy/girl a drink, getting to know them, then thinking "we both know where this is headed", honestly.

silva has milner and johnson to contend with and will be rotated over the xmas period, he may only miss one game but any player im bringing in now is guna be one that is unlikely to be rotated at all

4 games in 2 weeks for all the teams means rotation galore!!

Which is a better option - get rid of Drogba for Torres this week, or for Tevez next week?

This article doesn't really convince me in any way that Silva will do anything special, OPTA stats would have been useful if he looks to be improving his shot count/passing percentages etc

I'm inclined to agree JU, he's a great player but great players don't always relate to good FPL prospects, if he was around the 7 mil mark I think he might be an option but not when he's rubbing shoulders with Nasri, Nani, VDV, Cahill price wise.

    or

    Evra to Kyriagos?

If it's one of those 2 I'd go B. If you fancy Liverpool to win it then I see the goal coming from a set piece not Torres

        Eh... I don't agree.

Newcastle are at home, but they've still missing their first choice centre backs, and Liverpool have been quite good of late.

Don't get me wrong as a pool fan I hope ta god Torres goes postal at St James' , I just don't see it happening. Yes Liverpool have been quite good but Torres has been hit nad miss all season.

Against a team with no first choice CBs, unhappy with appointment of new manager, in poor form... Sounds like a perfect chance for a "hit" game to me?

    Silva is terrible for FF.

    - Plays for Man City who don't score many goals.
    - Isn't on set pieces or penalties.
    - Doesn't get bonus because Tevez hogs them.
    - Has a poor scoring record in La Liga.

I keep saying this, but people insist he's a viable differential... Go ahead and pay 8.5 for a 3 point machine.

Yeah I agree. Love the watchlists but last week Silva was branded with "Luka Modric Syndrome" and now he's a watchlist feature?

me too, dont want to be too harsh cause I appreciate the watchlists, but in this case it is simply making something of nothing, he might score a few times over Christmas, but 8.5 is simply not worth it

a few players who cost 2.0 less and score at least 1 more point per game

      N'Zogbia 5.1
      Brunt 4.9
      Etherington 4.7
      Gamst Pedersen 4.7
      Adam 4.6
      Park 4.4

Silva at 3.4 points per game

I know I shouldn't, but really want to put Torres in for Drogba for a 4 point hit. Already done Bos out Kyrgiakos in, but can't resist the idea of Torres vs Sol!
    Leave it or gamble?

Lads can I just remind people that this is Liverpool we're talking about. Loading up on our players is absolute madness. Sunderland + Blackpool anyone. We haven't suddenly turned into title contenders like

Lol yeah good point. Torres would be in next week if not now though. Got some ground to make up and think he's worth the risk for the next few weeks.
I want Kolarov next week, so it might just be delaying a 4 point hit if I leave Torres this week.
