Alan Pardew arrives at St James’ Park amidst a huge wave of negativity and must attempt to turnaround the fortunes of an ailing Newcastle side. A Liverpool outfit, showing true signs of a resurgence and masterminded by a canny Roy Hodgson, lie in wait. What are the prospects for Fantasy Managers? Let’s indulge in some Friday morning scribbles…

There’s plenty to soak up in the press on Alan Pardew’s arrival at St James’ Park. Only the clash with Liverpool will truly reveal the reaction of both fans and players to his arrival. Reports of an alleged player revolt are circling and, while a new managerial appointment often brings a positive reaction, in this case the smart money is on an entirely different scenario.

Given Newcastle’s form and confidence, Liverpool could well come away from St James’ Park with three points and another clean sheet. Hodgson’s side have conceded just 6 goals over their last 8 matches – fewer than any other side. Newcastle in contrast are struggling for goals – neutralise Andy Carroll and Pardew’s side are immediately scratching around for a threat.

Hodgson will look to defend, frustrate the home crowd and nick a goal and in Sotirios Kyrgiakos they have the ideal gladiator to take on Carroll. I’m currently sitting on two Liverpool defenders and Carroll – right now I’m tempted by the gamble of benching the striker and heavily backing a Liverpool cleanie. I’ll sleep on it.

We now know that Steve Gerrard will not make his return at Newcastle this weekend, with the Anfield clash with Fulham now his target. This will surely mean another start for David Ngog up front for Liverpool, unless Hodgson decides to bring in Joe Cole and opt for a 4-5-1. If Ngog plays he offers some potential as a 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game – more on that later today.

Roy Hodgson also informed us that Dan Agger is close to a return and could even come into contention against Fulham in Gameweek 18…

“Agger is much better and working very, very hard…We’re targeting the Fulham game. The Sports Science people are telling me it’s too soon and that really he needs a bit longer, but in my conversations with him he is in agreement that Fulham isn’t out of the question so he’s pushing it.”

That has repercussions when it comes to the potential of Kyrgiakos. He currently sits atop our Defender Watchlist rankings but may now come under threat from a returning Agger in weeks to come. The Dane has been vocal over his future at Anfield and Hodgson may feel pressure to offer him starts to prove his worth at the club. It’s not clear how the Liverpool regards Agger’s abilities, although we do know that he clearly values the presence of Kyrgiakos on the pitch. Hodgson recently presented the Greek as option as a stand-in skipper in Gerrard’s absence. That offers some reassurance, although clearly there will be a threat hanging over him once Agger is back in contention – that could be enough for would-be investors to look to Paul Konchesky as a more secure alternative in the same price bracket.

West Brom go into the derby match with Villa with doubts surrounding key players – Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie. Both were also doubts for the Newcastle game and both started and ended up returning points – particularly the nippy Nigerian. Be wary then – Odemwingie looks a prospect against a troubled Villa defence and, if he trains today, will surely start. Brunt looks even more likely to figure according to the reports. Don’t hit the panic button on either of these prospects then – it looks like there could be goals at Villa Park.

Cesc Fabregas has offered us an update on his fitness via Twitter (you’ve got to love this new trend)…

“Training, training and more training. Hopefully I’ll be available for Monday.”

Fabregas has stated that will not take a risk on his hamstring and certainly Arsene Wenger is unlikely to throw him in and risk another recurrence. We can only await an official update but, given the scenario, Wenger is surely likely to keep cards very close to his chest.

A possible return for Fabregas would cloud the issue of Arsenal’s first choice midfield even further. As mentioned in Scribbles earlier this week, Theo Walcott is one player currently struggling to earn starts as a result of the riches available to Wenger in this area. Clearly this is beginning to hit home to Walcott himself as today’s article in the Daily Mail reveals…

“It is always frustrating being on the bench. Ask any player, it is not just me. But it comes to the point when you do not want to dwell on it all the time. You just want to come off the bench, show what you can do and try and get back in the team…This season, I have come back and the team has been playing well and winning so it is difficult to get back into the team as there is no reason to change it. That is understandable but it is frustrating. Hopefully against Partizan I have shown what I can do.”

Will Walcott get an opportunity at Old Trafford? I’ve an increasing feeling that he will. Wenger went with a Robin Van Persie/Theo Walcott combination at Blackburn earlier in the season, relegating Marouane Chamakh to the bench. I just wonder if he’ll do the same on Monday night.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        I think liverpool's front 6 will be:

        Torres/Kuyt

        Cole/Meireles/Gerrard/Maxi

but I could be wrong (I have Kuyt- score you ox!)

So many options. Drogba -> Ngog

Getting to have silly amounts of money in the bank now. Last weeks midfield was probably the cheapest I've ever fielded in five seasons of FPL (£16.8m). With the above transfer I will no doubt smash by cheapest ever "front 3" with £16.2m.

Man C are on the rise, against the bottom club.
I think maybe Elmander's form may not continue.

Anton Ferdinand at 4.5 million should play in the next few Sunderland games.

Alright peeps, first genuinely difficult keeper decision of the season probably...

Jaaskelainen at home to Blackburn, or Foster away to Wolves?

The form pick is obviously Foster, but I'd be astonished if Wolves don't score to be honest. They'll surely be targeting this game as an absolute must win in their current position, and they've actually been scoring a few at home in the past few games.

And then there's Bolton, who as far as I'm concerned have an easier fixture, but have kept just the one clean sheet all season. Blackburn always struggle on the road, and often struggle to score too, but like Wolves they are scoring a surprising amount at the moment.

Ultimately I wouldn't be at all surprised if they both concede, but I still need to make a decision. Heart says Jussi, head says Foster and I don't know what my balls say.... So, thoughts?

Yeah but the home team is Bolton! Who never keep clean sheets! Like inalize says, playing Jussi in easy home games instead of Foster has cost us a fair few points this season. I'd be incredibly annoyed if it happens again.

I haven't picked the right keeper once in the last five weeks, and my bench keeper season total is higher than my playing keeper total, so it would be nice to finally make a correct decision!

Jamsiep, after going thru this earlier in the season(and getting it wrong every single time that I played Jussi at home, while Foster was raking up the points on my bench) I have given up and Foster plays every single week.

Until Jussi gets a CS of course....

I've Foster and Krul and the amount of points I've lost with Foster on the bench is bloody annoying. So I'd agree with you, and play Foster.

When the wildcard is played in Jan I'll be keeping Foster and playing him every week with the cheapest keeper possible as backup. No more annoying clean sheets on the bench.

Classic me having him for that game last season.. He was probably one of my best signings of the season, got him in for the Burnley game and he had a run of about 5/6 weeks where he scored massively.

When I'm in doubt about keepers I just play the odds, as I think it's so hard to estimate save points and similar things.

        Bolton: 3.05
        Birmingham: 3.7

I have those two and I'm playing Jussi.

Yeah but i've 'played the odds' almost every week and been wrong almsot every week (a bit like jamsiep above) so i'm going Foster 100%

Wolves were fairly useless against us after the first 5 minutes and we NEVER lose to the noblots at the BreezeBloc

I know, but I also think we can agree that this has been a weird season. I'm sticking to that strategy myself, probably forever. There is no way I would have played Foster away to City or against Chelsea over Jussi, those were freak results.

            They'll probably both concede anyway.

At least it's not Krul and Carson. I've come to the conclusion that it's poor old Timothy's surname that makes that combination so depressing. If it was Harper and Carson it wouldn't sound so bad.

Ha! I had Foster/Jaask in goal and then Enrique/Jara defence (rotating them as you would with keepers) so I had both nightmares covered!!

Tosey - you chatted earlier in the week about getting Johnson(Livpool)especially with StevieG back leading to possible assists.

Now that SG is still inj are you still going for that trsfr? All this Agger talk is making me nervous iro The Greek.

I can't afford to trsfr him in and then not have him play in his favourable fixtures coming up ince Agger is back.

well i think we have atleast 2 more weeks with the greek starting probably 3-4. i really hope he has a big game against carroll as with nice fixtures and potential cleanies after that could cement his place in the team. also skrtel is on 4 yellows so even if agger takes his place the greek will get a game when skrtels banned

ive brought johnson in for bosingwa this week as his injury forced my hand

Its hard to bench a player that has done so well in terms of points week in and week out and if the Newcastle players want to impress the new manager then they will have to step up a gear. There is a lot of buy Liverpool players of late on here and its not 100% justified as fixtures are not predictable every game has been so far like a cup match and if Newcastle come out like they did against Sunderland then who knows what the score will be and who will score those goals, I am finding it hard to drop Carroll.

I have an (unhealthy?) aversion o the Liverpool defence.

Carroll has good form & Coleman gives not only exposure to defensive points, but also attacking ones too.

Carroll - no one yet, knows how the managerial change will affect the players once they take to the field.

Could have just said Konch on the bench. Would have been much easier.

totally agree with evra recent comments about kids:
When asked about his thoughts of Arsenal ahead of their clash at Old Trafford, Evra was dismissive.

"For me, Arsenal is a football training centre," he said Canal+. "You watch the match, you enjoy it, but are you going to win a title afterwards? That's what people remember.

"It has been five years since they won anything and, for a big club like Arsenal, that is a crisis.

"We can lose against them on the 13th but, at the end of the day, what is there (for Arsenal)? There is nothing. There are no trophies, there is nothing.

"Our real enemy is Chelsea. We are more concerned with Chelsea's results than those of Arsenal, even if we know Arsenal are a great team who can beat Chelsea, us (United) or anyone."

Evra even mocked Arsenal further, saying that playing against the Gunners is "fun".

"When we play against Arsenal, it is really fun," he said. "They are a team that plays football who will not come to Old Trafford with 11 men behind the ball.

"We also play football, but the difference is that we also have strength. Sometimes, they cannot kill off matches. We are more efficient."

I just don't buy into the '5 years with no trophy crisis' talk. Only two count, premier league and champs league. What does winning a terrible FA Cup final on penalties mean? If Arsenal had won another rubbish final two years ago, would things be so different?

They're not been quite good enough to win either of those two, but some of the football has been amazing. If I was an Arsenal fan, I'd be remembering that fondly, not a dreadful FA Cup final. That's what football really is about.

I expect so! But given a choice between brilliant football and no trophies or terrible football and plenty of trophies (assuming the ideal of brilliant and plenty isn't available, although in the real world it is very possible) I'd take the football every time.

A few things I want to add that doesn't really make any difference.

              1. Evra should acknowledge that Arsenal are not only trying to play good football, but more importantly they try to manage to keep the finances in check. He should not be so patronising to one of the few top teams that are note in impossible financial situations.

              2. The United side of around 2007-2008 is probably the one I have enjoyed watching the most over the last ten years or so. The directness, power and pace they had in their game was just stunning. They always seemed to be in acres of space and also had some fierce shooting going on. Far more enjoyable to watch than a team just passing it around forever in my opinion.

Yes, Man U have proved repeatedly over the years that it's possible to win important trophies AND look good, that's the holy grail. But only one team can win the league each year, and it would be dreadful if everyone sacrificed attractive football to that goal.

                  Oh absolutely. I agree.

I like it all mixed up the way it is, with plenty of teams with different ideas and goals.

most of the times deserving teams win in the end n they win it by playing good intelligent football...barca vs inter last season in champs lg was the best defensive performance i have ever seen with 10 men...

Spoken like a true arsenal fan. Pretty football is great, but pointless if you don't win anything at the end of it. Ask Spurs fans if winning the CC over Chelsea meant nothing, or other Utd fans when we beat City in the semi's last year.

I'm not saying trophies don't matter. I'm saying winning the FA Cup (or crap equivalent) is not a substitute for good, enjoyable football.

Aye true, but don't be mistaken into thinking any fan wouldn't swap all the technical football on the planet for a CL or PL title. I guess another valid point is it's practically impossible to win anything playing 'bad' football too.

                Early 90s Arsenal wasn't pretty...

Agree, and that is what I mean- the CL and PL are different beasts, the FA Cup or Carling is just keeping things ticking over and not worth the sacrifice.

Here's a tricky one for you lot.

      Do I play Samba(bol) or Enrique(LIV)?

Throw into the mix I have Elmander trying to score past Samba, but Samba carries goal threat and Enrique doesn't.

Bookies have Newc at 4.50 and Bburn at 4.8 for the CSheet.

Really stuck on this one so advice appreciated.

hmmm that is annoying. I'm in a sililar position with Konchesky and Carroll playing but in your case i think i'd play Samba anyway. Can't see Newcastle keeping Liverpool at bay and like you say Samba carries a much bigger attacking threat than Jose

I think Samba. Difference between them clean sheet wise is so small but he has far better chance to grab a goal or bonus points.

I thought you were getting rid of Enrique? I remember a post saying that a few days ago....

Anyways, I'd go with Samba. As you very well know, Enrique never does anything of worth in FPL. Apart from away to Arsenal and Everton when he's on your bench.

He didn't know, apparently today is 'team shape' day so they prefer having only a few people there. But he did say 'Can't imagine Brunt being a problem. He was on media duty yesterday which usually means he's going to be ok'.

        Carroll Drogba

Nah, Fulham are masters of the score draw, and Liverpool are keeping things tight at the minute.

I'm getting rid of Tevez for just the one week, so I don't have to play N'Zogbia (although he'll come in if Odemwingie doesn't make it).

I am kinda tempted but don't know who to get rid of. I bought Tevez for £10.7 so i'm not keen on dumping him just for one week and losing the cash (i did the same thing with Nani earlier in the season and regretted it) so might have to be Drogba. At least i could still play my 5 midfielders i suppose. What do you reckon for the game at the lane then? Score draw maybe?

      Nani, Bale, Nasri, Malouda

      Carroll, Drogba, Elmander(C)

      Bench:Gordon, Ferguson, Simpson, Bosingwa

I have 4.0 in the bank.

      What to do?

      a) drogs to torres
      b) malouda to cahill
      c) bosingwa out

Balotelli could be long term but also could implode he's a gamble but a differential for sure as most will go Tevez over the next few weeks after his one week suspension. Most would probably play Welbeck this week as Gyan is a doubt again and Tevez is back next week. However if you like to Gamble then sell W and buy B it could pay off or it could be bad nobody knows because if anybody was sure then Balotelli would not be a differential.

Last week Mancini played Balotelli + Tevez.
So, Balotelli might have a few weeks in the side alongside Tevez.
Why do you say Balotelli will "implode"? Mancini has managed him before and brought him over from Italy, presumably as a major player in his City team for this season.
