Alan Pardew arrives at St Jamesโ€™ Park amidst a huge wave of negativity and must attempt to turnaround the fortunes of an ailing Newcastle side. A Liverpool outfit, showing true signs of a resurgence and masterminded by a canny Roy Hodgson, lie in wait. What are the prospects for Fantasy Managers? Letโ€™s indulge in some Friday morning scribblesโ€ฆ

Thereโ€™s plenty to soak up in the press on Alan Pardewโ€™s arrival at St Jamesโ€™ Park. Only the clash with Liverpool will truly reveal the reaction of both fans and players to his arrival. Reports of an alleged player revolt are circling and, while a new managerial appointment often brings a positive reaction, in this case the smart money is on an entirely different scenario.

Given Newcastleโ€™s form and confidence, Liverpool could well come away from St Jamesโ€™ Park with three points and another clean sheet. Hodgsonโ€™s side have conceded just 6 goals over their last 8 matches โ€“ fewer than any other side. Newcastle in contrast are struggling for goals โ€“ neutralise Andy Carroll and Pardewโ€™s side are immediately scratching around for a threat.

Hodgson will look to defend, frustrate the home crowd and nick a goal and in Sotirios Kyrgiakos they have the ideal gladiator to take on Carroll. Iโ€™m currently sitting on two Liverpool defenders and Carroll โ€“ right now Iโ€™m tempted by the gamble of benching the striker and heavily backing a Liverpool cleanie. Iโ€™ll sleep on it.

We now know that Steve Gerrard will not make his return at Newcastle this weekend, with the Anfield clash with Fulham now his target. This will surely mean another start for David Ngog up front for Liverpool, unless Hodgson decides to bring in Joe Cole and opt for a 4-5-1. If Ngog plays he offers some potential as a 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League game โ€“ more on that later today.

Roy Hodgson also informed us that Dan Agger is close to a return and could even come into contention against Fulham in Gameweek 18…

“Agger is much better and working very, very hardโ€ฆWe’re targeting the Fulham game. The Sports Science people are telling me it’s too soon and that really he needs a bit longer, but in my conversations with him he is in agreement that Fulham isn’t out of the question so he’s pushing it.”

That has repercussions when it comes to the potential of Kyrgiakos. He currently sits atop our Defender Watchlist rankings but may now come under threat from a returning Agger in weeks to come. The Dane has been vocal over his future at Anfield and Hodgson may feel pressure to offer him starts to prove his worth at the club. Itโ€™s not clear how the Liverpool regards Aggerโ€™s abilities, although we do know that he clearly values the presence of Kyrgiakos on the pitch. Hodgson recently presented the Greek as option as a stand-in skipper in Gerrardโ€™s absence. That offers some reassurance, although clearly there will be a threat hanging over him once Agger is back in contention โ€“ that could be enough for would-be investors to look to Paul Konchesky as a more secure alternative in the same price bracket.

West Brom go into the derby match with Villa with doubts surrounding key players โ€“ Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie. Both were also doubts for the Newcastle game and both started and ended up returning points โ€“ particularly the nippy Nigerian. Be wary then โ€“ Odemwingie looks a prospect against a troubled Villa defence and, if he trains today, will surely start. Brunt looks even more likely to figure according to the reports. Donโ€™t hit the panic button on either of these prospects then โ€“ it looks like there could be goals at Villa Park.

Cesc Fabregas has offered us an update on his fitness via Twitter (youโ€™ve got to love this new trend)…

“Training, training and more training. Hopefully I’ll be available for Monday.”

Fabregas has stated that will not take a risk on his hamstring and certainly Arsene Wenger is unlikely to throw him in and risk another recurrence. We can only await an official update but, given the scenario, Wenger is surely likely to keep cards very close to his chest.

A possible return for Fabregas would cloud the issue of Arsenalโ€™s first choice midfield even further. As mentioned in Scribbles earlier this week, Theo Walcott is one player currently struggling to earn starts as a result of the riches available to Wenger in this area. Clearly this is beginning to hit home to Walcott himself as todayโ€™s article in the Daily Mail revealsโ€ฆ

โ€œIt is always frustrating being on the bench. Ask any player, it is not just me. But it comes to the point when you do not want to dwell on it all the time. You just want to come off the bench, show what you can do and try and get back in the teamโ€ฆThis season, I have come back and the team has been playing well and winning so it is difficult to get back into the team as there is no reason to change it. That is understandable but it is frustrating. Hopefully against Partizan I have shown what I can do.โ€

Will Walcott get an opportunity at Old Trafford? Iโ€™ve an increasing feeling that he will. Wenger went with a Robin Van Persie/Theo Walcott combination at Blackburn earlier in the season, relegating Marouane Chamakh to the bench. I just wonder if heโ€™ll do the same on Monday night.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    My team:

    Schwarzer / (Gilks)
    Dann / Evra / Jara / (Bosingwa / Kolarov)
    Nani / Kuyt / N'Zogbia / Bale / Dempsey
    Elmander / Rooney / (Odemwingie)

Looking for some1 to pair with me on decision about:

    Bosingwa -> ShawX
    Bosingwa -> G.Cahill
    Bosingwa -> Konchesky/Samba
Or save the free transfer for next week and play Jara, when ill have to change Bale->VDV or Kuyt->Gerrard?

out of that lot. SAmba would be the best to get....but not for this week. Jara is likely to get a similar score, so may be best to wait and get two for next week.

Samba playing away with Bolton and iam hoping on Elmander, so it would be stupid for me to go now with BR def. Jara sure can get 2pts at least with Villa away +kinda hes getting bpts often, no idea why thou.. ๐Ÿ™‚

I prefer Mark's as well, due to the explanation and the occasional crazy pick that ends up doing well. Sometimes its good to take a risk. TOtal FPL is just the top 15 players that everyone has.

I may be wrong, but I believe the TotalFPL team they put up is based on the most popular choices for the week from all of the players, so it's a collective opinion rather than just that of the site owner. I always thought it was a bit odd that the teams had to be in at 11:30 on a Friday, considering that most of the definitive team news comes out in the afternoon.

Yep it is but not from peoples actual teams in FPL. TotalFPL picks are based on peoples opinions on who the most popular players are in there own Dream Team game and its more real as everyone gets a free reign to pick there teams from a fixed budget (no limits on transfers). I wonder though how many people actually bother to pick there dream teams - atleast I havent changed my team in ages!

more of a manager's philosophy question here. Ive noticed alot of "who to bench" questions have carroll and konch in the mix, myself included. Do you find it safer to play both if possible, with the theory that one of the two should get more than a couple of points, rather than trying to guess which one will have the better day, and risk choosing wrong?
Part of me thinks Newcastle may be out of sorts this week and liverpool have been gaining momentum lately, the other thinks newcastle may come out strong and L'pool road woes continue. Since either could legitimately happen, with such an influential variable as a midweek sacking of a manager effecting the outcome, playing one from each side seems safer.

OR, I just have no balls to try to guess right and go for the bigger score. Maybe Im on an island here but it seems many on the boards are prone to benching one of the two in this kind of situation.

That provokes another dilemma. If a player is in form and gaining points do you keep playing him, capitalising on their form throughout tougher fixtures. Or, is his good form due to expire, call it, and bench the player.

I guess its 'is your pint half....'

I pick a player who play well but not scoring goals or have an assist in past few rounds. For example Bale has just two goals, all in one game, and i put him as a captain when he has a great fixtures, and in first two weeks he have 4 points, but in third week he score twice and have one assist. Than, in next week, i pick another player for a captain...

The argument that a high scoring player is due to have a dip is about as convincing as the "he's due to score big" claim.

He's what you should do. Look at how well a player scores over a long period. Your best estimate the players average score. It is incorrect to assume that, because a player has scored little, he is due to score "extra" in the next few games to make up the average.

Same with Carroll & Konchesky/Kyrgiakos. Always hard to pick with new managers. The expectation has to be on Liverpool for this one but by no means clear-cut. Either Newcastle scores or Liverpool gets a clean sheet which is more or less the same as saying that one of Liverpool def or Carroll will get at least 5/6 points.

Add to that a bit of uncertainty and there is the chance that both score well or that one will score in double figures. So you have a good chance of 4 pts per player (cheap ones too) with a reasonable chance of 6pts+ per player. You hedge your bets and get some upside.

Rodwell will surely be in the middle again. A) because he's not a winger at all, and B) because Arteta is suspended and Heitinga is a massive liability.

    Hope Park starts on monday!

    with Ji-sung Park v Arsenal (9 games) = W 67%, D 22%, L 11%.
    without Park v Arsenal (4 games) = W 25%, D 25%, L 50%.

Goals conceded in 2010/11: When Park starts = 0.8 goals per game. When Park doesn't start: 1.4 goals per game.

He's like a 5th defender. He might not be able to shoot, or pass, but he does a very useful job against the big teams.

In case your not that is also a useless stat.

There are so many variables to be calculated concerning: the other players on the pitch and the opponents Park played against. You would need to run it through stats software to do it.

You really think park was responsible for that 0.6 difference ?

Posted earlier. Still totally unsure what to do:

With the impending return of fabregas, VDV, gerrard et al next week i was looking at no transfers this week. There players could be gold dust over the hectic christmas and new year period.
Problem is i did not envisage injuries and suspensions to decimate my team. To press i have lost VDV, kolarov, tevez and boswinga and am unable to field 11 players this week. So should i consider a move for torres for tevez this week bringing back tevez for drogs next week and also a 4 point hit to release boswinga next week. I am also keen on cahill but hesitant to lose VDV AS i think he will back next week.
Team available to press to play this week is krul or carson, jags, krygiakos, givet, jarvis, nani, nasri, bale, drogs and elmander.
    Any input dear FFS readers?

As for the Tevez > Torres, then Drogba > Tevez plan, that is exactly what I'm doing. Although I'm in a position where I could quite possibly get away with those being my only transfers, fingers crossed, over the next couple of weeks.

I thought I was crazy with my idea. Seemed a waste of a transfer but my hand has been forced by injuries/suspensions and they dosen't appear appear to be any stand out transfers this week.

Torres is a risk but medium term looks good. I feel I have to bring him in as I have no real capitano choice. Though the only time I have captained him this year was V Blackpool!!!!

Also, a player's form on FPL is his average score in all the games in the past 30 days, right? So is the form shown on the 'My team' page the form from all games 30 days before the beginning of the gameweek, or from 30 days before the current day? Because if it's the latter then surely it's entirely conceivable that a player's form will change overnight, possibly buggering up people's emergency captain.

        In the rules it says:

        'How do you calculate form?
Form is the player's average score per game, calculated from all games played by his club in the last 30 days.'

I'm just wondering when 'the last 30 days' actually starts. The present day, or the day the gameweek begins?

Looking at Coleman's Form. It says 0.8 and he has scored 3 in the last 4 games = 0.75 (rounded off to 8?). 30 days earlier from today he played in GW12 (10th Nov.) and scored 1 point so his form should then be 4/4=1

Despite having the worst goal difference in the division only the top four, Everton and Fulham have conceded fewer goals away from home than Wigan (11).

At Goodison Park, Everton have only scored 10 goals, with only Manchester City, Birmingham and Wigan (8) netting fewer on home soil.

One goal was enough to settle the last meeting between Wigan and Everton in January this year at the DW Stadium.

The game looked to be heading towards a draw before Tim Cahill’s 84th minute goal helped the visitors take all three points.

ya hard to miss the big carrick cock up against valencia , but all the passing in our own half was sloppy to be fair to him!

still tho, we brought carrick in for killer passes, it seems he doesnt do them any more, with scholes finding the wingers with ease and anderson constantly looking for through balls its more important we have someone to break down play, fletch does that for me, him and ando have the energy to nullify the arsenal midfield.

When Lampard is back, what are folks' feelings towards going for him and main captain ? I need to make ground up and see Lamps as a good way to do this.

Start of season, Malouda was a much better VFM than Lamps...but Malouda has gone AWOL effectively.

Whereas we all know what Lamps can do.....

My thinking is to do Lamps > Cahill (as Cahill misses much of January) and a cheap defender for A Cole....so still leaveing me with Lamps, Drogba and having VDV, Nana, Nasri, Carroll and Berbatov "backing up"

Lets look at this two ways.

First way. You are possibly driven to get Lamps because previous seasons points esp. last season and probably rightfully so, hope he can replicate for the remainder of the season

Second way. After a 4 month abscence in which he could be re-introduced gradually maybe he will not get the minutes the price dictates. Drogs is on pens ( some free-kicks) IMO now and thus lessens the output of Lamps. He is coming back into a team with its worse form since 2003/04 and his injury may affect his playing ability.

See the logic of your idea but....

All fair points bamtam....I was assuming Lamps would resume pens and free kicks when back, if if as you say Drogba set to keep them, then yes that changes everything.

I hope VDV doesn't make it back for the Blackpool game... Have no way of being able to get him in, as I don't intend to drop any of Cahill, Nani or Nasri.

Although Cahill --> VDV in week 20 looks like a complete no brainer. Just have to hope that he doesn't go mental vs Blackpool and Villa, which he probably will. ๐Ÿ™
