After three-and-a-half months out injured, Chelsea talisman Frank Lampard returned to the substitutes’ bench, and ultimately the pitch, during today’s London derby against Spurs. Whilst his game time was limited to 15 odd minutes it was refreshing to see the midfielders return from a football and Fantasy Football perspective.

Lampard hadn’t played since August when he underwent a hernia operation and then tore a groin muscle during his recovery. At first Chelsea looked able to cope without their goalscoring midfielder but performances have stalled and Chelsea have been looking a team in disarray.

Fans of the Blues will hope that Lampard’s return provides a fillip to the teams performances which during his absence have bordered on tragic. Considering that Chelsea have managed only 1 win in their last 8 matches in all competitions, any boost will be welcomed.

His inclusion on the bench was a surprise and the word from Carlo Ancelotti was that he was going to be short for the massive trip to Spurs;

“No, he’s not fit again. He’s out. I can say this with a smile because he trained well but it will be a very tough game against Tottenham and we didn’t have a test with him in a game.”

Usually Ancelotti is pretty candid and honest with his team selection calls so for Lampard to appear on the bench after these comments was a huge surprise. Was the Italian looking to provide a psychological boost to his players?

Unfortunately for Chelsea Lampard’s presence didn’t provide them with enough to get all three points at White Hart Lane – something they should have collected if it weren’t for Didier Drogba’s late missed penalty. One things for certain the miss from the Ivorian will surely see Frank Lampard back on spot kick duties.

Given the random nature of Fantasy Football this season and the lack of consistency amongst the so called big names and expensive players, the return of Lampard should create a nice differential for those players trying to find a way of clawing back deficits in their respective leagues.

If the midfield man can reach form of seasons past he will surely see his ownership rocket back up to the levels seen at the start of the season and during the past few years. A lot will depend on how Ancelotti eases him back into the team and on how Chelsea’s form improves, but a player who almost certainly guarantee’s goals and assists will be hard to ignore.

"Since signing for Manchester City, I have enjoyed playing for the supporters. They have welcomed me to the club and I regret that it has come to this.

"They deserve success as reward for their passionate and patient support. The club is very fortunate to have supporters like these. Anybody who has watched me play for Manchester City cannot question my commitment and passion for the club whenever I have worn the shirt.

"However, I can confirm I have handed a transfer request to the chairman of Manchester City Football Club. Now I need to clear my head and think because this is an important part of my career. My feelings have not changed and it is regrettable we have reached this situation but It is something I have felt for some time and have spent many hours thinking this through.

"I wanted to leave in the summer, but was convinced to return to the club. Sadly, my feelings have not changed. I hugely resent the management's suggestions that I have been unduly influenced by others. I am disappointed that the management should now see fit to try to portray the situation in another light.

"My relationship with certain executives and individuals at the club has broken down and is now beyond repair. I do not wish to expand on this at this stage. They know, because I have told them. I wish to clarify that I have no personal issue with the manager Roberto Mancini.

"I could have signed an improved contract, offered by the club during this season; however this decision is not about money. I have made that clear to both the board and the management on several occasions. The owner has been very generous with what he has offered to me. I would like to thank Sheik Mansour for his understanding and support.

"I want to thank the supporters for making me welcome at Manchester City and hope they agree I have given my all for the club on the pitch."

Sorry I couldn't just post a link, my mobile won't let me for some reason.
And I think Tevez is done, you don't come back after a statement like this...

It all goes to show that Fergie*, once more, knew what he was doing.

A player whose wife is abroad, whose kids are abroad, who cannot speak English after several years and who has made no effort to make a life in England will always cause a manager trouble.

*I do not support Man U.

          You're joking right?

I don't know why people are getting it twisted - he's saying he wants to leave because of a breakdown with someone at the club (not because of his family situation).

ermm, why wouldn't he say that? It would be much easier to say that if that was the case?

Yep, i'm sure you have been "proved right" once again.

Anyway i'd put money on him staying in Europe which dismisses the whole family thing being the reason.

Anyway, that was being made is that it was some stroke of genius by fergie not to sign him up because he foresaw this kind of situation - which is of course a load of nonsense

Not true. If he goes to Spain and his wife is prepared to move there with the kids, then all of his off-the-field problems are solved in one go. Assuming he can speak Spanish.

he has split from his wife, and the new mother of his children ?

But again, why would he say it's down to relationships within the club? If that's not the case he has just made his life a hell of a lot more difficult.

Regardless, the point regarding fergie still stands. The man is a legend but he dropped the ball with the Tevez situation, he's not infallible

oh yeah fpl wise carroll is relentless. 5mil for 104 penalty-less points in under half a season is insane. i still standby my view that he's a much more limited player than most make out though. newcastle's tactics and carroll himself really get the best out of him

I don't really mind if he doesn't have the grace of a Van Basten, the pace of Henry, the vision of Cantona or the skills of Bergkamp. He sticks the ball in the net or allows someone else to do so, effective - that's what he is. Defenders must HATE playing against him, I'd love to see him partner Rooney on a regular basis for England.

International football is all about control, possession and not expending energy. Playing Carroll for Eng which he deserves btw may actually make it easier for the opposition. Long balls = giving the ball away like France game.

No, see in my eyes this is the misconception bewildering peddled by you and the vinegary old sods on RTE. Great and good English sides have no identity crisis, great and good English sides play direct, high tempo aggressive football. That is what the Premiership is built on, now when we get the media and know-it-all sods or foreign coaches getting us to change our system and identity the players become uncomfortable and under-perform. Balls to the rest of the world we should play football like Englishmen. If we get beaten by skill and guile then fair enough, we did it our way. Let us not for a second forget how good we could be by playing a big physical striker:
                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unnBRbcQICI
It didn't work with Crouch because simply, he was not aggressive and powerful enough. Trying to be smart and all things to all men doesn't work for England.

Attila firstly the boys in RTE are still stuck in the stone age regarding modern football.
This has nothing to do with them.

And im glad you said that.

                    Fits the article.

There is no such thing as "football like englishmen " irish french etc.

If you implement a youth system a team can play in any way they want.

France rub it in yadda yadda. Balls. We had half a team out and it was possibly the biggest bonehead time ever to play a friendly. I take nothing from that game other than we have ongoing unsolved problems from the world cup.

Attila the article wasnt about France - England a few weeks ago.

It was about what you highlighted. The unwillingness to learn and change with the times.

To be fair I just looked at the rather annoying headline. I will read it with an open mind. My point however stands, the best way for success with England is to play as similar a style as possible to the majority of the players own clubs. Look at the Champions League winning United side of 1999 - they played fast high tempo direct football. I'm not talking about simply lumping the ball into the area at any opportunity.

just had a look for about 20 mins at incorporatin all those 4 players you mention.
i have all the confidence in the world in fabregas' ability but have now finally lost confidence in his hamstrings.
loked at lampard too for gw20 but am not sure i could justify drogba and lampard.
RVP is still a waiting game for me. he looks like a provider in his brief cameos this season, i'm happy with just nasri for the near future.

Probably hold on to Elmander until the West Brom home game (GW 19).

Why Fab in now? He's going to be eased back in gently and Nasri may offer much better value long term in any case. Cahill does have Birmingham at home and West Ham away before he buggers off so I am personally holding onto him...

Never thought I'd say this but may not get Fabs back in at the price now I've got Nasri. RVP is getting a foothold back into the team and two Gunners will do for me in the easier games...

But it is a very subjective thing, I wasnt around for Brazil 70 or Hungary 52 so I cant comment on them, I was for Milan 89/90 and they were fricking awesome in every department.

I don't really need to 'get one over the neighbours' - they have won nothing for 34 years, we've got nothing to prove to them. Don't really have a problem with Tevez, either. Point is that he's signed a contract, and needs to either fulfil it or buy himself out of it.

That last Wednesday b4 this story broke a foreign press journo was on the radio saying Tevez wanting to go back to be with his kids in Argentina and with his friends and play with his home team

That he said last week he hates modern football, hates the kids who want money !!! yes he said it last week and dont care about trophies, That he doesnt care about Football

Yes its a stupid argument as if he goes to Argentina (or real or where ever) he would lose a massive amount of money .

                    Yes pointless indeed.

He wanted to stay and Fergie could have signed him all season but left it too late.

Tevez is vile. He and Joraabchian agent have attempted to run every club he's signed for.

He wasn't a saint but I liked him because he was a United player, but he was also played rubbish for us in his last year which makes it even worse seeing him ripping it up for City.
You should try to understand that he is a traitor that went across to the other side. Maybe you should try to understand the psyche of the football fan.

I'll happily help you out Syd: we don't really know.

It is possible that we will know more later on, but for not this discussion will never lead anywhere as neither side can be proven wrong.

Swings and roundabouts this season tbh- I'm sure some other ludicrous event will make up for the Drogba fail.....

(BTW- if carroll stays fit I can honestly see him pushing hard for the top-scoring forward spot....)

unlucky ft9. it's crazy that despite none of my team getting a goal, assist, clean sheet or bonus point that drogba scoring that penalty would have made the gameweek alright

Rooney or Torres in for Tevez for me, to go alongside Carroll and Drogs in the front three.

Will watch Rooney tomorrow night and see if he looks sharp. Nando is just too out of sorts to inspire confidence, despite the fixtures.
