A high octane Old Trafford encounter, played out in a strangled middle third, provided the odd flash of quality but ultimately saw United edge the win that took them to the Premier League summit. Ji-Sung Park’s improvised looping header from a deflected Nani cross proved the deciding factor, as Alex Ferguson’s rearguard kept the Gunners at arm’s length to prolong their unbeaten run…

The selection of Wojciech Szczesny in goal dominated the headlines when it came to Arsenal’s team sheet. The young Pole came in to replace compatriot Lukasz Fabianski after he had suffered a hip injury in the Champions League in midweek. Szczesny did his reputation no harm on the night, making an array of smart saves to deny United a bigger winning margin.

Elsewhere in the Gunners lineup, Cesc Fabregas was only fit enough for a place on the bench but saw action on 64 minutes when he replaced Tomas Rosicky in midfield. Arsene Wenger went with five in the middle of the park, with Marouane Chamakh leading the attack, leaving Robin Van Persie also kept in reserve on the bench. Both Fabregas and Van Persie are surely edging closer to starts and Wenger could well throw them in against Stoke this weekend off the back of last night’s damaging defeat.

Marouane Chamakh picked up his fourth bookings of the season last night and are now on the suspension tightrope, just one booking away from a one-match ban.

Aware of Arsenal’s likely 4-5-1 formation, Alex Ferguson opted to pack the midfield. That saw Dimitar Berbatov drop to the bench, allowing Rooney to lead the attack in a 4-2-3-1 formation which had Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick providing midfield cover, anchored by Anderson, with Nani and Park flanking Rooney.

We’ve seen Ferguson abandon the 4-4-2 in previous seasons and clearly he will look at opting for a packed midfield in the big games when up against a 4-5-1 – we could even see a similar setup at Stamford Bridge next weekend. Berbatov, having scored 5 goals in his last start, could well find himself on the bench for a second game running; not amusing for those who invested off the back of his Blackburn blitz.

Ji-Sung Park’s goal was his fourth of the season and, bizarrely his third in three starts against Arsenal. It earned the Korean the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points on the night, his second such haul of the season. At just 4.9 in the FPL, Park will attract attention but will be departing Old Trafford after Boxing Day for the Asian Cup and, according to Ferguson, will be absent for United’s seven matches that follow.

Park was not the only player singled out by Ferguson for praise. The United boss also acclaimed the performance of his back four who restricted the Gunners to just brief glimpses of Edwin van der Sar’s goal.

“We defended very well, the back four were fantastic tonight, absolutely magnificent.”

Rio Ferdinand was particularly impressive, while defensive partner Nemanja Vidic was on hand to clear Chamakh’s goal bound effort in the second-half. Rafael also looked solid at right-back and has surely now cemented this role after a string of convincing showings. The Brazilian is by far the cheapest route to United defensive returns and, at 5.6 in the FPL, looks a superb bargain. United have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 5 league outings, conceding just 3 goals over that spell.

Anderson is another prospect worth monitoring. Like Rafael, his improved performances are beginning to be rewarded with regular starts. He will be under constant pressure from the likes of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick however, so we need further reassurance before escalating an interest. He does represent a potential mid-price prospect for United’s double Gameweek 24 however.

Wayne Rooney’s missed penalty stained his copybook on the night but he once again hinted at returns to come. Significantly, Rooney did see less of the ball as a result of Berbatov’s absence. With the Bulgarian on the field, Rooney comes deep and has more influence; last night he had half the number of touches (52) that he enjoyed in the 7-1 win over Blackburn. Rooney is still searching for his first goal from open play this season but did fire in 4 attempts on goal, 3 of which were on target. As his performances show promise, Rooney will be beginning to tempt Fantasy investment given the Carlos Tevez situation and the current lack of sharpness on show from Fernando Torres.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Here's how you can tell it was a cross and not a shot...Just look at Rooney! Nani was playing a quick low dipping cross to Rooney at the backpost.

    It would have still made it to Rooney, even with the deflection, Park stopped it with his head! A ridiculous header but Clichy alters nothing!

      Seriously, just no! The deflection was HUGE and took a ball that was going towards the goal to a player outside the 6 yard box square to nani. Accept the facts, it was not an assist!

          It's not about winning some internet argument. It's about pointing out the total foolishness that is the "assist rule"

          If they played any type of real football then they would know what an assist is.

            An assist is when you directly set up a goal. Nani didnt DIRECTLY set it up so its not an assist! No deflection=no park goal=no assist. Its really not rocket science!

            I read your take on Elmander. I feel WBA(although a bit unpredictable) have better fixtures than Bolton over the next 2 weeks(especially next 4)

            Odemwingie/Brunt should do well. Pity about the Brunt 4 yellows though.

            But if I have Elmander I will probably bench this week.

    Morning Broskis,

    Behold my team:

    Jaaskelainen
    Cole Konchesky Coleman Toure Dann
    Cahill Nasri Nani Bale N'Zogbia
    Carroll Elmander Tevez

    I've got 4.2 in the bank and 2 free transfers this week. An embarrassment of riches really. But I want to do this right and get my team sorted coming into the xmas fixtures.

    I haven't made any concrete decisions yet, and I don't think there's necessarily any emergencies here. But here's what I'm thinking in order of priority:

    A Cole -> Rafael/Onuoha
    Bale -> VDV
    Tevez -> Rooney/Drogba/???
    Cahill -> Fabergas
    Elmander -> Chamakh/???

    Anyone have any thought/suggestions? I'm leaving myself with no Chelsea cover if I get rid of Cole and don't bring in Drogers. But I don't find any Chelsea players particularly appealing at the moment

        I wouldn't go near MGP as captain but the others are good shouts.. I was thinking about Cesc too but that would be a gamble as he may not get the 90. Have to see what Wenger says Thurs/Fri.

        May play safe and go with El Nino. He won't be playing on Thurs so he should be fit at least.

        Hell, if we know more on the situation - I wouldn't be against giving Tevez the armband.

    Just discovered one of my main rivals in my league has based his team on the Total FPL sites weekly 'Dream Team' selection for the past 11 weeks - even down to the captain selection! Some weeks he's made as many as three transfers just to keep his team in line with there one - unbelievable!

        He currently sits top by 12 points having had a lead of 42. It shows that constant point hits don't always pay off - he even bought in Balotelli last week - just like their site recommended! Just waiting for them to do their picks for this coming week - it'll give me a great insight into what his team will look like come Saturday!

      seems a good team, i'm thinking the same in defence, going for kolrov jones and konchesky and benching vidic....
      the only thing i feel unsure about is captaining nasri, with either one or both fabs starting this weekend it takes set pieces and pens away from nasri, so it makes me hope he has a performance like he did against fulham!

    The terms "assist" and "deflection" seem to take on different meanings when applied to football.

    Surely an assist is an assist irrespective of whether or not it is intentional, and surely anyone touching the ball is deflecting it from its current path.

    The ONLY reason that the assist has not been given is that they seem to have decided it was not Nani's intent to assist JSP, but to assist rooney behind him.

    That's like me giving a sandwich to a homeless person, and them saying "Well, I'd thank you, but as you originally intended to eat the sandwich yourself, you're not really helping me".

      Didn't Nani aim to shoot at goal though? Which meant the deflection did make the ball change direction into the box to JSP.

      It's like when a guy passes to somebody on the halfway line, then he beats the whole team to score. Hardly his decision to make an assist, but still an assist nevertheless. Therefore, intent should not matter.
      What if it's a cross-shot?!

      p.s. I dont want Nani to get it as my H2H rival has him (c)!

      Intent has got nothing to do with it, it wasn't given because of a significant deflection.

        Yeah but most the time if the player meant to cross the ball and it deflected into the box they'd get the assist. But he hasn't tried to cross it which basically means that the deflection totally changed the outcome of the ball.

          If a guy takes a shot and it is saved to a player who scores then that IS an assist, without any intent to pass, so where's the difference??

            Not a load of difference I admit but it does state in the rules that a parry from a keeper will result in an assist. A deflection which changes the direction, which it did, doesn't.

    Any suggestions please? I'm thinking I may get away without a transfer this week.

    Foster (Krul)
    Vidic Kolarov Alcaraz (Simpson Coleman)
    Nani Malouda Pedersen NZogbia (Adam)
    Torres Drogba Carroll

    Bank: 1.0

    Adam OUT looks the best transfer, with perhaps Brunt or Yaya to come in. However Yaya seems to be a small rotation risk. Brunt is also on 4 yellows and could be suspended anytime soon.

    Soop, I too get very annoyed by the lack of clear definitions. I would refer back to a number of weeks ago when Andy Carroll's header back across goal against West Ham skimmed off a west ham head without deflecting the ball and no assist given.

    In the same week, Evra had a shot at goal against Stoke that was deflected into the path of Hernandez who scored and an assist was given. If the ball was not deflected, the ball would never found it's way to Hernendez.

    Apply the concept of the assist for Evra, then surely Nani should get the assist as his intention was to cross the ball!!

    I am finally losing patience with the FPL as they seem to have the power to give or not give assists with no consistency in their approach. Think this will be my last year of FPL as they never give a valid reason for delining assists and I believe they are biased...

      The FPL decisions are inconsistent.
      They just need to add the following to their assist rules:

      "Gareth Bale, or whoever is the current FPL golden boy, will always be awarded an assist whatever the circumstances."

    think ive convinced myself to do vdv to lampard this week regardless of the weather and if hes likely to be fit. pav wont be dropped this week after chelsea and he has defoe and crouch aswell

      i'm thinking about lampard tbh, i think its a good shout! if i bring him in I may captain him! he's someone you can play in any given game and Chelsea have some good games from Gameweek 20 onwards!

            Ah right, yeah I see ur point mate, i think rotation given the number of games is a worry for most players tbh! But yeah, I dont think I will bring back VDV in until I see him back playing, some may even wait until the wildcard!

              this is why the likes of nzogbia brunt mgp adam etc are good to have as their teams cant afford to drop them

              harry can call upon good backup players, also nasri wont start every game over xmas imo so ill be (reluctantly) avoiding him

    Significant deflection or not...I have provided details of two seperate situations where siginficant deflections have occurred and one was given as an assist and one was not.

    The FPL have already set a precedent and therefore they are contradicting their own protocols by not giving the Nani assist!!

    Wow! Didnt realise how hectic the Christmas/New Year scedule was. My advice is to save as many transfers as poss for rotation....

    Gameweek 19 Sun 26 Dec 11:30
    Gameweek 20 Tues 28 Dec 11:30
    Gameweek 21 Sat 1 Jan 11:30
    Gameweek 22 Tues 4 Jan 19:30

    4 games 10 days!

      difficult to call as both got good fixtures next 2 games, looking ahead i guess nzogbia got a better run of 5/6 games.

      would play it safe with nzogbia, no idea how blackburn players will respond to new manager and how he will play them.
