A high octane Old Trafford encounter, played out in a strangled middle third, provided the odd flash of quality but ultimately saw United edge the win that took them to the Premier League summit. Ji-Sung Park’s improvised looping header from a deflected Nani cross proved the deciding factor, as Alex Ferguson’s rearguard kept the Gunners at arm’s length to prolong their unbeaten run…

The selection of Wojciech Szczesny in goal dominated the headlines when it came to Arsenal’s team sheet. The young Pole came in to replace compatriot Lukasz Fabianski after he had suffered a hip injury in the Champions League in midweek. Szczesny did his reputation no harm on the night, making an array of smart saves to deny United a bigger winning margin.

Elsewhere in the Gunners lineup, Cesc Fabregas was only fit enough for a place on the bench but saw action on 64 minutes when he replaced Tomas Rosicky in midfield. Arsene Wenger went with five in the middle of the park, with Marouane Chamakh leading the attack, leaving Robin Van Persie also kept in reserve on the bench. Both Fabregas and Van Persie are surely edging closer to starts and Wenger could well throw them in against Stoke this weekend off the back of last night’s damaging defeat.

Marouane Chamakh picked up his fourth bookings of the season last night and are now on the suspension tightrope, just one booking away from a one-match ban.

Aware of Arsenal’s likely 4-5-1 formation, Alex Ferguson opted to pack the midfield. That saw Dimitar Berbatov drop to the bench, allowing Rooney to lead the attack in a 4-2-3-1 formation which had Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick providing midfield cover, anchored by Anderson, with Nani and Park flanking Rooney.

We’ve seen Ferguson abandon the 4-4-2 in previous seasons and clearly he will look at opting for a packed midfield in the big games when up against a 4-5-1 – we could even see a similar setup at Stamford Bridge next weekend. Berbatov, having scored 5 goals in his last start, could well find himself on the bench for a second game running; not amusing for those who invested off the back of his Blackburn blitz.

Ji-Sung Park’s goal was his fourth of the season and, bizarrely his third in three starts against Arsenal. It earned the Korean the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points on the night, his second such haul of the season. At just 4.9 in the FPL, Park will attract attention but will be departing Old Trafford after Boxing Day for the Asian Cup and, according to Ferguson, will be absent for United’s seven matches that follow.

Park was not the only player singled out by Ferguson for praise. The United boss also acclaimed the performance of his back four who restricted the Gunners to just brief glimpses of Edwin van der Sar’s goal.

“We defended very well, the back four were fantastic tonight, absolutely magnificent.”

Rio Ferdinand was particularly impressive, while defensive partner Nemanja Vidic was on hand to clear Chamakh’s goal bound effort in the second-half. Rafael also looked solid at right-back and has surely now cemented this role after a string of convincing showings. The Brazilian is by far the cheapest route to United defensive returns and, at 5.6 in the FPL, looks a superb bargain. United have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 5 league outings, conceding just 3 goals over that spell.

Anderson is another prospect worth monitoring. Like Rafael, his improved performances are beginning to be rewarded with regular starts. He will be under constant pressure from the likes of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick however, so we need further reassurance before escalating an interest. He does represent a potential mid-price prospect for United’s double Gameweek 24 however.

Wayne Rooney’s missed penalty stained his copybook on the night but he once again hinted at returns to come. Significantly, Rooney did see less of the ball as a result of Berbatov’s absence. With the Bulgarian on the field, Rooney comes deep and has more influence; last night he had half the number of touches (52) that he enjoyed in the 7-1 win over Blackburn. Rooney is still searching for his first goal from open play this season but did fire in 4 attempts on goal, 3 of which were on target. As his performances show promise, Rooney will be beginning to tempt Fantasy investment given the Carlos Tevez situation and the current lack of sharpness on show from Fernando Torres.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How does this line up look?

    Hart (Carson)
    Kyrgiakos Evatt Jones (Simpson, Coleman)
Malouda, Nani, Milijas, Brunt (c), Lee
    Drogba, Elmander (Berbatov)

Should I play Coleman instead of Lee?

Guys would appreciate a bit of advice on my team....13.3M spare!

    Foster (Jaaskelinen)
    Kolorov Vidic Jones (Dann) (Simpson)
    N'Zogbia Nasri Nani MGP (Etherington)
    Elmander Balotelli Carroll

    Should I do...

    1) Dann to Konchesky? Then bench Vidic this week? Konchesky is a player I do want for a bit to give my defence a bit of L'Pool coverage and remove doubling up on B'Ham defence!

    2) Should I then do Lampard to Etherington for a 4 point hit? Perhaps then captain Lampard? I would def bench Etherington for Gameweek 18 and 19 and Chelsea have much better games from Gameweek 20 onwards! Would rather do it now for a hit as it leaves me some transfers spare over the christmas rotation gameweeks!

first one seems sensible. Liv's run looks better than anyone elses in the league.
Lampard is an interesting one. Every man and his dog has been recommending selling all chelsea players over the last few weeks, so seems strange to spend 12.6m on one. That said, no-one else is going to have him! Might be worth a punt.

Would love some help with my team if anyone's got a moment? Feels like it's treading water at the moment:
    Foster/Hanhemann
    Konchesky/Kolorov/Coleman/Knight/Simpson
    Fabregas/Nasri/Nani/Nzogbia/Lee
    Carroll/Drogba/Tevez
    2 free transfers

Will eventually do Nasri back to VdV but seems silly to do it before the Stoke game. I want Robinson in for Hanhemann, but Big Sam's sacking has complicated things a bit. No idea what to do with Tevez!
    Any help much apprecaited

I would keep this team together, i wouldn't rush the VDV transfer as i think he will be subject to rotation as games come fast over the christmas period, see how he is when he's back!

Do one transfer and you will still have 2 free transfers next week, I would perhaps keep Tevez and see what his situation is this week!

If you feel that you def wanna bring in Robinson go for it, but then you can always make keeper changes when you play a wildcard next month!

Really struggling, lost so many point these last 2 weeks, dropped from top in my mini league too.

    Current team for next week,

    Foster (Schwarzer)
    Knight Konchesky A.Cole (Simpson Huth)
    GamstPed Nani VdV Cahill (Jarvis)
    Torres Elmander Tevez

Luck really hasn't gone my way, 29 points this week... half tempted to drop Tevez for Rooney, or even RvP. Or Elmander > Rooney/RvP and Cahill > Brunt / WBA midfielder. Or do I just go all out and play a WC... been resisting for weeks now because the Jan window is so close.

I've had Cole since Wk1 so lose like 0.5million selling him, paid 7.5, sell him for 7.9, buy back for 8.4. I can hold on to him for a while I think.

Tevez is the big risk for me. If it wasn't for United playing Chelsea this week I'd swap him for Rooney. Tempted by Bent too, Sunderland have a nice run of fixtures, and would free up cash for Fabs / Lamps for Cahill during Asian cup?

Rooney is not woeful, he won't always be playing the lone striker role and had a decent performance last night. In fantasy terms you can be guaranteed that if he had slotted the pen, he would have kicked on with the confidence a goal at OT would of brought, and he would be looking at BP's too, and people wouldn't be writing him off, again. It's a game of fine lines this fantast lark and instead of 12-16 points as captain, he had 0 because of that miss. Same with Drogba the day before, despite having a poxy 1st goal, he slots the penalty, he gets the 3 BP's without a doubt, and he is on 13 points, and now he is heavily transferred in again.

I think Rooney is the best of a bad bunch at the momment and I will be sticking.

Torres, ya, if RVP starts I will have him, I have seen a player so carefully eased back into action though, hard to see when he will get 60 minutes even.

Ok, bad phrasing on my part. Fantasy wise Rooney is a big waste of funds. Because he is out of goal scoring form (not a goal from open play since March is it?). And frankly, that pen suggests a lack of confidence imo. How can United score 7 and Rooney not once?

Anyway, I will not even consider him until he has started to show some sort of consistency. I.e. back-to-back scoring games, or similar.

Maybe the rift with club officials has a bit of substance to it?
It's all a bit closed doors to be honest, none of us really know what's going on to be fair, by the sounds of it maybe Tevez himself even doesn't!

If he does end up going back to Argentina (or Brazil), fair enough. If he goes anywhere else, it's all about the money.

I read an interesting article saying that City have halved their payments to agents over the past year, and Kia Joorabchian has fallen out with Garry Cock over this.

Much like the Rooney situation, I'm going to blame the agent unless I see conclusive proof to the contrary.

Tevez claiming to the media that is the reason behind his transfer request is absolutely no proof whatsoever. Why would Tevez be wanting to negotiate a new contract AFTER his supposed transfer realization in the summer huh DB? Arshavin > Silva

Blackburn in no rush to appoint new manager
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/blackburn_rovers/9285531.stm

"It could now be a couple of months before a new manager is put in place.
"Right now we are going to have a study and put a lot of thought into who the next manager will be."

Why the hell would they sack first and think later. I can't understand this decision for the life of me.

Was thinking about Samba in this week too, probably gonna have to hold on that one for a little while.

I at least have slightly more respect for the owners in that it appears to be more a case of them thinking allardyce isn't the right manager to take the club forward in the future, rather than them being dissapointed with his relatively good performance this season.....

New owners will always want to appoint their own manager. Happened with Sparky last year.

The most surprising thing about all of this is that they want someone who will play good football yet they appear to know nothing about the sport. Badly advised imo.

Hughton's sacking was much more surprising because he was doing a very good job, and was Ashley's appointment.

          That is the question.

Gyan will probably be on penalties so he could prove the better option, but he could also be flanking Bent in a 4-3-3.

You need to wait on Tevez, he might not play for City again (I think he will, but still wait).

Blackpool's game might be called off (no undersoil heating) - in fact, if the weather is going to be very cold over Xmas / New Year, stay away from Blackpool players altogether til the double GW (GW24).

Gamst and Odem have good fixtures, and it lets you upgrade your def, so I'd go for that.

'35 - Arsenal misplaced 35 passes in their own half against Man Utd, no game has seen them miss more in the PL this season. Wayward. '

And Alex '2 BPs' Song was mainly responsible for that. One of the worst BP decisions of the season.

    Russia v NATO
    Yin v Yang
    Wenger v Ferguson
    Tevez v Manchester
    Mike Ashley v Donuts
    Toffs v Proles
    Members v Non Members

Another low scoring gameweek (a record low for one of the parties) produces a staggering result. For the Members high in their ivory tower Shyted and Sporting Lisburn rained down missles and boiling oil onto the rabble below. However Horlicks snuck in the back door and let the rabble in, without even wiping their feet the scoundrels made themselves at home, rogering the butlers again, using Great Uncle Horatio's urn as a spitoon and farting in the drawing room. The results of this week are as follows

    ..............drum roll..............

    MEMBERS 619 V 676 NON MEMBERS

This shocking and crushing defeat now means that the overall scores are as follows

    MEMBERS 15293 v 15315 NON MEMBERS

For the first time this season the Non Members take the overall lead, many of the Members were last seen taking ship into exile as a new darker age engulfs the land. Komrades the PINMP (Peoples Independent Non Members Party) now calls the shots, hail the glorious revolution. The lair of the fascist member beasts has been destroyed, 're-education' camps will now be set up for anyone who shows an unhealthy interest in statistics. There have been suggestions that the Members now possess some super-ticker-weapon, fear not Brothers - the PINMP will destroy the bourgeois swines! Viva La Revolution! Viva Comrade Horlicks!

    Members......we'll be back.

I almost wish that Deb had pulled down the curtain and seen Dexter and Lumen behind it holding blood stained knives.. It would have made for some epic TV. Although would have sucked for Dexter! 😀

Yes, things would have been soooo much more interesting with an ending like that, just like last season when I was absolutely shocked! But this time they went for the happy ending.

Is it time to get rid of Malouda? (no wisecracks)

On my wildcard and want the best possible side for the next 8 weeks. There are no obvious canditates and I've already sold Drogba so might it be worth holding on?

He is going to be Chelsea's main threat and usually comes good against Man U and Arsenal. Now his "Malaria" is under control i think he will be the talisman we come to expect.

Dont count Chelsea out just yet guys.
