Everton’s recent draw at Chelsea had David Moyes calling Leighton Baines the second best left-back in the league as the defender’s impressive display helped rescue a 1-1 draw against the out-of-sorts champions. Last weekend, the defender continued his recent good form with yet another eye-catching performance in Everton’s home draw with Wigan.

Baines picked up 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points as he caused Roberto Martinez’s side problems from the first to the last whistle and although Moyes’ side still struggle in the bottom half of the table, their left-back is continuing to accumulate the Fantasy points.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has garnered the young Irishman much Fantasy attention as an Out-of-Position defender, but as this “Average Position” map below-taken from the Wigan match – shows, it is Baines who is actually playing further forward, despite taking to the pitch as a left-back.

Baines (3) was not just more attacking than Coleman (23), he was also further forward than any of Everton’s midfield, creating chance after chance for the home side; once again, it was simply poor finishing that denied both the club a valuable win and Baines a much-deserved assist or two.

His goal-shy players are a source of frustration right now for Moyes, as the Everton boss pondered post-match:

I don’t think you get better chances in the Premier League than we did today. The longer we didn’t take them the more frustrated we got and the more anxiety came into our play and the crowd. We just have to take those chances. The worrying thing is we are not beating teams at Goodison who, over the years, we have done.

I am saying ‘Is it something else other than just not scoring goals?’ and I am finding it hard to look further than that. It wasn’t just the centre-forward today, there were chances shared around the team and no-one converted any of them. The anxiety is coming from the form and our position (two points above the relegation zone). We are all wondering where we are going to score a goal.

For as much as they are currently not taking them, at least -thanks mainly to Baines- Everton are creating chances aplenty. A look at the chalkboards below illustrates just how much of a threat Baines was on Saturday in comparison to Coleman in terms of balls into the box. Through either his corner-kick duties or balls delivered from the left flank, Baines’ delivery was always menacing.

When combined with the number of passes each player made against Wigan, the Heat Map chalkboards below give further indication of just how attacking Baines’ role is. He made 87% of all passes in the Wigan half compared to Coleman’s 83%, but there is substantial difference when you consider Baines made a total of 62 passes, whereas Coleman made just 27.

At £7.2m in FPL, Baines may be the pricier of the two, but a look at his playing time this season shows he has not missed a single minute of Everton’s league campaign and provides a surety of selection £4.9m Coleman cannot. For defenders, his six assists is twice the amount of second-best Ashley Cole and, in addition, Baines currently has the second-best points haul of any defender in FPL, despite the fact that Saturday’s goalless draw was his team’s first clean sheet in seven league matches.

With the likes of Chris Brunt, Charles N’Zogbia, Matt Eterington, Charlie Adam and Kevin Nolan offering great mid-priced midfield options, many Fantasy Managers have cash to spare and although Baines is one of the costliest defenders, he still offers better value-for-money than most. Those with Tim Cahill for Everton cover could do worse than consider him as an alternative, given the Australian’s imminent Asian Cup duties.

Everton are renowned for picking up the pace in the second half of the season and if Moyes can inspire them to repeat last season’s brilliant turnaround, Baines should see his Fantasy points swell even further.

Two free transfers this week, don't think my team desperately needs them but might tweak the lesser players:

    Foster (Carson)
    Vidic Kolarov Konchesky (Simpson Coleman)
    Nani VdV Nasri Bale (Ferguson)
    Rooney Tevez Carroll

    1: Tevez > Torres
    2: VdV/Bale > Brunt
    3: Simpson > Mensah/Bardsley
    4: Carson > Robinson

Which 1/2 transfers from the above?!

Why did you buy him in the first place then? He should be fine as far as starting roles go, personally I am not gone on him and dont believe he will be a success but plenty of people who know more than me think he will. If I was convinced enough to buy him I wouldnt be thinking of ditching after that last performance, particularly as his role may become more important in light of the Tevez affair.

Bought him as a 1-week punt, before the Tevez drama and when he was predicted to lead the line against a somewhat porous WH defence. The plan was to bring Tevez back in this week but then all this shizz started so now looking at other options until it becomes evident what the best long-term choice is.

It really would be so much more convenient if he was definitely going to rot in the reserves and we could all move on. Not that that would actually happen. But yes Defoe is an interesting proposition, depending on how Spurs shape up with everyone fit

Bit of a hit and hope off topic here - but does anyone else have a VW Golf Gti here? Having problems getting the car in gear when the engine is running, wondering if anyone has had similar issues. Tried looking on the net and didn't really find anything overly useful.

Well that sort of rings true, it wouldnt go into gear at all (reverse or any of the forward gears) with the engine running but did with the engine off. I left the car running for about 15 mins and it seemed fine, I was just wondering if it was symptomatic of something serious - its due a service anyway so will get them to look, but been shitting it in case the clutchplate is cracked or something.

Golf gearboxes can be a bit of a bee-atch, especially after a few years. I had one that was a mother to get into second gear.

As the car was a piece of rusting shit anyway, I soldiered on for years hoping it would fail its MOT. It never did.

I seem to recall the garage suggesting some kind of very expensive fix, which I never bothered with.

Cheers Turbodog, I really hope its a simple (cheap) fix, apparently the six speed gear box on the Gti is prone to needing re-lubricating after bad winters etc (so said my mechanic back home via the phone an hour ago) so I'm hoping it might just be that. I'll take it in for the service and cross the fingers!

Whats the story with Sunderland's keepers? Mignolet played for the first 11 games, thats due to Gordon's injury i'm guessing, then Gordon returned in GW 12 but was dropped last game? Should i risk bring 1 in or is it too risky with rotation?

If not, what other keepers look good? maybe double up on Blackburn defenders with Robinson or Schwarzer?

Defoe depends on how Spurs shape up with everyone fit. Bent scoring seems to be one of those inevitable truths of the premiership, albeit in fits and starts

I got Bent two weeks ago and watching the West Ham game was annoying. He kept coming deep to get the ball and set up play while Gyan stayed up top. So, if you're thinking or a S'land striker, I'd probably say get Gyan over Bent.

Cracking fixtures, so you'd have to imagine they'll score a few in this run of games but unlike last season the points will probably be spread out.

    Team:

    Hart(Rachubka)
    Baines Vidic Kolarov (Kyriagkos Jara)
    Nani Arshavin Adam Nzog (Albrighton)
    Berb Toress Carroll

Want VDV for Arshavin but he is unlikely to play right?
Is Arshavin to MGP(West ham) a good transfer for this week.
And then Albrighton for VDV gameweek 19 a good bet?

Jussi as i'm sure you know has not kept a clean sheet since the opening day, when there's an opportunity you surely may as well get rid.
Jagielka, similarly without the attacking threat of Baines, Everton's defence doesn't look especially profitable and he's not cheap.

Everyone has a different opinion when it comes to Tevez but ultimately nobody knows how that one's gonna work out so wouldn't rush to shift him. Perhaps change Jussi for a similarly priced keeper this week, then be in a better position to make changes next week - even if you do the same as you've planned here, at least Vidic will have already played CHE.

I don't really agree with the opinion of going out of your way to avoid it. It's pretty much never going to happen that every single one of your players scores points so in a way it's making sure you profit at least a little if the result goes either way. But please tell me if this is completely illogical, I may be wrong.

I really hope someone replies who strongly disagrees (as much as someone can feel strongly about fantasy football), never understood the other way of thinking that seemingly everyone else goes by! Premier league football is so unpredictable, especially this year, that putting all your eggs in one basket is surely too risky. Glad I'm not alone anyway!

      Hello.

This is something I like to give my view on, and it is because for once I know it's the correct one. Play the players you believe in regardless of if they are up against each other.

It will bring you more points in the end, and this is not something that can be debated. It's truth.

All right, it is debatable but one answer will give you less points than the other as soon as we have a reasonable amount of cases to study.

I think Hunter S. Thompson is interested in the points.

Manchester United are eyeing a January move for Spanish winger Joaquin from Valencia, according to TalkSport.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was hoping to land the 29-year-old last year when Antonio Valencia picked up an ankle injury, and given his good form for los Che so far this campaign the Scot is ready to make another approach.

He could well make a bid of €6.5 million [£5.5m] to land the former Real Betis winger in January.

Fair enough, keeping Cole might make sense in those circumstances.
Samba for Jags? Despite the managerial situation. Then if they do particularly badly against WH at home then that could become Rafael the week after, by which point the CHE fixture is out of the way and there will be an even stronger indication of his starting position

I think Kolarov was only out for one week so should be back against Everton. Other than that. Although that would be a good transfer, it might be worth holding off on that to give yourself more freedom to change things around if the Tevez situation dictates that.
If you have two frees this week, and make one transfer, do you have 2 frees next week?

Dunno though, think he is going to be more cautious with him this time. If they are going to have a chance in winning the league they need him fit and to cut out all the niggly injuries. Are you getting him in AP?

Best thing is he seems to affect Nasri's output too (there are the odd games where that's not the case) So it would be win/win.

Why is there no sign of a Yaya Toure bandwagon? He's cheap and he's played 90 minutes in 7 of the last 8 GWs. He was given a more attacking role against W Ham and Man C have good fixtures ahead.

It depends on what the fudge happens with City's attacking players. If Tevez and Balotelli end up starting often then Toure might be pushed back a tad, I think he's only had a slightly more forward role while they've been playing one central recognised striker who has therefore needed support from deep

I suppose its natural that people are polarised especially where Man Utd are concerned, which naturally causes the opposite defensive reaction among Man Utd fans.
Anderson is a pretty good prospect and was one of the better performers in a game that few shone in. But from a completely objective point of view I would prefer Yaya Toure as a player than Anderson (real life not just FPL). This is not an attempt at a wind up or anything else, I just rate him higher as a player based on what I have seen so far.

I thought he played well yesterday, he was ideal for that match and role, good management. I still think in the grand scheme of things he is an average player.

The general demographic of a utd. fan as you well know is highly annoying, ill informed, unknowledgeable, all have a justification story as to why they support the most succesful team of recent years despite never having been to Manchester. All the cliches basically. The comments that were flying around here yesterday were ridiculous (think Boom!!).

The most frustrating thing is though the utd fans inability to reasonably debate, and receive and return constructive criticism without quoting their teams successes which brings them full circle to the reason they support the club in the first place.

You are obviously very knowledgeable and a great contributor to the forum but you must admit 95% of utd give regular fans like yourself a very bad name.

I'd agree with that yeah, Boom I imagine is incredibly annoying as is CP as an outspoken Arsenal fan and Jamsiep as a Chelsea fan. It just comes with the territory of clubs with with large support and it's certainly not just restricted to Utd fans.

He didn't do too badly at centre-half in the 2009 CL final.

So that's three roles he can play pretty well.

£200,000 per week does get you a player after all.

I'm closer to AP's side on this one.

Branding him average is taking it a bit too far for me though. He is skillful enough and has the advantage of being a big guy who is in no way bullied in a physical league, and the huge advantage of having actually won things. City could use every bit of winning mentality there is.

I agree he is horribly overpaid and by no means a superstar though. A good player but not much more.

We all know that the selected captain on FFL scores double the points. But what happens when your captain somehow scores -3 points (e.g. red card)? Do you get:
    A) -3 points?
    B) -6 points (2x -3)?

The rules on FFL are not exactly clear.
