Everton’s recent draw at Chelsea had David Moyes calling Leighton Baines the second best left-back in the league as the defender’s impressive display helped rescue a 1-1 draw against the out-of-sorts champions. Last weekend, the defender continued his recent good form with yet another eye-catching performance in Everton’s home draw with Wigan.

Baines picked up 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points as he caused Roberto Martinez’s side problems from the first to the last whistle and although Moyes’ side still struggle in the bottom half of the table, their left-back is continuing to accumulate the Fantasy points.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has garnered the young Irishman much Fantasy attention as an Out-of-Position defender, but as this “Average Position” map below-taken from the Wigan match – shows, it is Baines who is actually playing further forward, despite taking to the pitch as a left-back.

Baines (3) was not just more attacking than Coleman (23), he was also further forward than any of Everton’s midfield, creating chance after chance for the home side; once again, it was simply poor finishing that denied both the club a valuable win and Baines a much-deserved assist or two.

His goal-shy players are a source of frustration right now for Moyes, as the Everton boss pondered post-match:

I don’t think you get better chances in the Premier League than we did today. The longer we didn’t take them the more frustrated we got and the more anxiety came into our play and the crowd. We just have to take those chances. The worrying thing is we are not beating teams at Goodison who, over the years, we have done.

I am saying ‘Is it something else other than just not scoring goals?’ and I am finding it hard to look further than that. It wasn’t just the centre-forward today, there were chances shared around the team and no-one converted any of them. The anxiety is coming from the form and our position (two points above the relegation zone). We are all wondering where we are going to score a goal.

For as much as they are currently not taking them, at least -thanks mainly to Baines- Everton are creating chances aplenty. A look at the chalkboards below illustrates just how much of a threat Baines was on Saturday in comparison to Coleman in terms of balls into the box. Through either his corner-kick duties or balls delivered from the left flank, Baines’ delivery was always menacing.

When combined with the number of passes each player made against Wigan, the Heat Map chalkboards below give further indication of just how attacking Baines’ role is. He made 87% of all passes in the Wigan half compared to Coleman’s 83%, but there is substantial difference when you consider Baines made a total of 62 passes, whereas Coleman made just 27.

At £7.2m in FPL, Baines may be the pricier of the two, but a look at his playing time this season shows he has not missed a single minute of Everton’s league campaign and provides a surety of selection £4.9m Coleman cannot. For defenders, his six assists is twice the amount of second-best Ashley Cole and, in addition, Baines currently has the second-best points haul of any defender in FPL, despite the fact that Saturday’s goalless draw was his team’s first clean sheet in seven league matches.

With the likes of Chris Brunt, Charles N’Zogbia, Matt Eterington, Charlie Adam and Kevin Nolan offering great mid-priced midfield options, many Fantasy Managers have cash to spare and although Baines is one of the costliest defenders, he still offers better value-for-money than most. Those with Tim Cahill for Everton cover could do worse than consider him as an alternative, given the Australian’s imminent Asian Cup duties.

Everton are renowned for picking up the pace in the second half of the season and if Moyes can inspire them to repeat last season’s brilliant turnaround, Baines should see his Fantasy points swell even further.

anyone reading this thing that torres is likely to be played by hodgson tomorrw even though theyre through? From a team perspective, i thin he's dead right, make them work, get the team ethic goin a bit. From an FPL perspective, im not thrilled, but any game time torres can get might get him closer to getting me a shed load of goals, once he dont get injured of course

I think I read somewhere that he IS likely to start, not sure where I saw that though. FPL wise he is certainly someone I am looking to get in, probably for the uncertain Tevez

Yep, Agree with RBJ. I hope he starts, and I have him.

He looked so shite, overweight, lazy and unfocused against Newcastle that every minute he can get under his belt will make him better prepared for the next league game.

I must say he did look poor against us, poor first touch coupled with some of his theatrical diving made him very unlikeable.

Forgive if this has been asked/discussed/answered already, but what are thoughts on picking up Szczesny? At 4.5, he might be worthy of some consideration ...

Perhaps the resident Gooners/FPL addicts can drop some wisdom on me?

He looks a better keeper for me than the ones Arsenal usually field, but that is based on only two games (against Newcastle near enough reserves in the CC and against Man Utd).
I'm not sure about getting him in at the moment, I suppose its a wait and see if he can claim a regular place. I've far more pressing worries than keepers at the mo so he is a mere blip on the edge of my radar 🙂

I don't think that will make things worse between them. I think SAF will understand that it was just a cheap trick.

It really is a bit baffling though, Manchester United are hardly your average hoofing goon side that would benefit from a crappy pitch.

Exactly, I don't know why he has to be such a bad loser and blame the pitch out of all the things!!! While fergie has calling on all fans to stop those nasty chants, that's how he reciprocates by giving this shit of an excuse. This one thing I absolutely hate about Wenger. frustration over 🙂

Yeah I think Wenger was clutching at straws to justify what was a very poor Arsenal performance.

          Normally Wenger would have blamed:
          a) United's 4-5-1. But then he did field a 4-5-1 himself.
          b) United constantly fouling his team but then the stats did speak for themselves and Arsenal were doing most of the fouling.
          c) The Ref who barring the penalty had a good game.

The truth is that United refused to let Arsenal play and gave 100% all over the pitch. Without time on the ball and space to play in Arsenal looked average.

Fabianski may not play. Maybe go for Hart/ Robinson as safer alternatives.
I would keep Cahill until he leaves for the Asian Cup, and Balotelli too until the Tevez saga is sorted.
Playing 2 LIV defenders is risky but could pay off. You could spread the risk by swapping Kyr/Konch for a SUN defender.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/dec/14/blackburn-british-manager-sam-allardyce

Do they have any idea how much they would have to spend to grant Blackburn a top five finish? They would have to replace a VERY large portion of the players, and probably also rebuild Ewood Park to increase income and fan base.

    It's total madness.

These guys have really ambitous plans. They want to attract a whole new asian fan base to the club. Attractive football, talismanic manager, few new sexy signings seems to be their chosen route. I'm thinkin less middle eastern welth and more far eastern wealth. Wouldn't be surprised if they transfer in a few aisian superstars ASAP also.

Tough to predict, very tough. We've done well against the bigger teams and then slipped up against Stoke, Blackpool and Wigan. If we do anything in the game it will come through Barton (probably assisting Carroll) so it wont be catastrophic to play him

Pretty much, they are the baines and Cahill of Newcastle really. With just barton falling short on assisting the assist at times. But he's superb on the pitch above all and even though he has bad bad record off the pitch but his performances oin it has made me a fan of him once again so much so that I'm fine with overlooking some of those stuff 🙂

He punched MGP and made obscene* gestures to Torres in his last two games...

Don't hit me, but anyone considering kuyt as a differential for the coming games. Most of his assists or goals come at home (in line with his teammates...) also my auto correct changes kuyt to "mutt" which may be a hint from the heavens...

I wanted to see what a few people in particular were going to say about me possibly getting him in after I've been a strong advocate against Carroll.

He's been good but I still feel his points will start to dry up. He does seem to be involved in every goal that Newcastle score, but I've taken most of those 104 points and haven't had him now for three weeks. I daren't get him in now and then take a load of his bad scores that are inevitably going to come soon.

In fairness, his recent goals against Chelsea and Bolton were a bit lucky.

And before you say I'm crazy, remember what people were saying about possibly getting rid of Drogba after GW5, those people were shot down, but lookng back it would have been a decent move.

Look at Drogba, you would have said the same after GW5.

Not every call comes off, at least not immediately, (judging Carroll's last three scores even though he may still score poorly up till GW28), if every call was correct, then we'd all be right up there on 1,000+ points.

As always though, you resort to personal insults, I'm not going to say anything back as you're just an anonymous person on the internet... pointless.

Basically you are trying to predict the future here. I'm keeping Carroll, he is an absolute bargain at his price and well capable of scoring against any opposition. I'm not saying he will rock out ten pointers every week but he is the most reliable player in the game and dropping him is much more of a gamble than keeping him.

No, but for people that didn't have him and were considering getting him in, then that could be construed as points chasing.

Basically, I said to Camzy that I thought Carroll would be a poor option between GW14 and GW27/28, (can't remember which), and there's morons like Dunny that are trying to shoot that notion down even though we are nowhere near GW27 yet.

Carroll scored two fortunate goals against Bolton and Chelsea, but I admit that he is playing well and got some good scores in the other games recently, but I still think he won't keep it up and his pointage will drop, considering the run of opponents he has.

Many people thought it was madness to drop Drogba for GW6, but surely you can agree that anyone that did that has not missed the Drog.

Well its clear you have a drum to bang, bang away old chap. Personally I think that your basis for Carroll being a bad pick is slightly illogical but hey 'tis your call.
The lad is fantasy gold especially considering how poor the alternatives are playing, plus his low price allows you to keep an eye on the returning Fabregas, Gerrard or Lampard for a bit of a marquee in the middle.
At any rate he's a keeper, personally I think you have made the wrong choice but time will settle the issue.

Indeed, I think it's better to put some figures out there. Carroll will not score more than 35 points in the next 10 gameweeks.

I'm reminded of that classic Ron-ism: "I never comment on referees and I'm not going to make an exception for that prat."

Re Carroll, I must be about the only person to have done badly out of him. Brought him in after the Villa game and he didn't do much for a few weeks. Sold him, since when he's been fantasy gold.

I'll be wildcarding him back in next month, unless RVP starts going mental in which case I might want a very cheap 3rd striker. Varney's great value at 4.6.

Yeah, thought you might pick up on the 'moron' comment, well you seem very keen to insult people on here and it isn't necessary. If you don't agree with what they're saying, then say so and back it up with reasoning and then you're fine. I don't say that you talk shit if you say something that I don't agree with, I'll always provide reasons to the contrary so that I'm not just saying something that can't be backed up with any logic.

I accept your reasons about what Carroll has done in the past as to why he will continue to do well, but that didn't work with the Drog, possibly Elmander's starting to go through a lean spell too.

If Carroll keeps it up then he's going to end up with a ridiculous amount of goals and assists come seasons-end, maybe it's because I view him as a 'cheapie' and that's why I think he can't keep it up. Perhaps he's this season's Darren Bent.

Fair play if Carroll continues to do the business for you, you deserve the points if so, but I'm happy to forego him as I think there are better options out there for now. I will probably get Carroll back at some stage, but not for a while, I'm going to stick to my guns and if he hurts me with mega-point hauls, then so be it.

There was nothing to point out this time, i clearly brought up the fact that i thought you were wrong about Carroll a few weeks ago when you were telling people to sell (and that he couldn't possibly carry on picking up good scores). I think it's hilarious that you are continuing to tell people to sell the most in form and consistent player in the game.

Anyway shall we call it a day?

SD, after reading his last argument do you really think he knows what he is talking about? Absolute rubbish and all just stating the obvious or some random shit. He also thinks that just writing in big f*cking paragraphs makes for a good argument. Jeeze!!!

You know very well that I said he was good to sell from GW14 - GW27, so have a look at Carroll's points then at the end of that run. If you'd held onto him for a bit longer than GW14, then that was a good call, but what if he'd got 2's from GW14 to GW24, but then did well GW25-GW27, he still gets the same total from GW14 - GW27. So judge my comments at the end of the poor-fixture run. If Carroll scores well, then I will be happy to admit that I was talking a load of horse manure, just like I was when I thought Bosingwa would be nailed on, and I admitted I was wrong then too.

Yeah, of course we can drop it, but stop saying that I give out toxic advice, almost as though everything I say is BS, when that isn't the case. There isn't one person on here that gets all their calls correct.

He's averaging 7PPG since you advised binning him.

And one person on here get all his calls right. The Truth.

Shahriyar, so one comment about Carroll's potential means I don't know what I'm talking about with anything to do with football. I am happy to say that I was wrong with Carroll, after GW27, (or an earlier gameweek if he keeps up these points much longer!)

Just wait and see, and if Carroll keeps scoring well, then I was indeed talking a load of shit.

No, it's not mutual at all. I think you know your fair share of things, particularly with Blackburn. You just seem a bit easy to throw scorn on stuff that I say on here, almost like you've made your mind up not to agree with it before you've read it.

But you've been on this for the past few weeks now while he has been consistently scoring points as opposed to other more "safer" and "better" options. Obviously he'll have a dip at some point in time. Are you gonna come up then and say ' See I've saying 4 10 freakin weeks now that he will fail" is that what you are planning to do. Doesn't work like that my friend.

No, I won't do that. He's got to score low points for a lot of gameweeks, as like you say, he's bound to score the odd 2 pointer. After his high scores recently, there's no way I could gloat over one or two 2's from him.

Just need a little help with the trades this week. Team is as follows:
    Krul (Carson)
    Ferdinand Coleman Samba Kolarov (Gohouri)
    Nani Albrighton Cahill Bale (Adam)
    Drogba Tevez (Piquionne)

The trades I'm looking at this week (2 free transders) are:
    1. Ferdinand->Kyrgiakos/Onouha
    2. Cahill->Cesc

I now it may be a little early for Cesc, but I would like some Arsenal players for when they play Stoke. I know Nasri seems logical but I would rather have Cesc because I will probably be getting him anyway.

Thoughts on any other trades/weak spots in the team? Thanks in advance

Id hold of on Nasri now that Cesc is back. I kind of regret taking him IN, despite racking up a nice 15.

players im not convinced by: Bale, Drogba, Adam. Have all three myself, and uncertain who to ship first.

          Rio OUT, Rafael IN?

i still think there might be some GK points to fetch for you until WC though.

Early doors, who'se everyone thinking of captaining this week.

Currently got it on Tevez but Nasri looks interesting too. I just worry about captaining a player with the early Saturday game in case he bombs. It kind of then ruins your FPL part of the weekend.

However, if the guy who plays on Saturday is going to get you the most points then...........
