Everton’s recent draw at Chelsea had David Moyes calling Leighton Baines the second best left-back in the league as the defender’s impressive display helped rescue a 1-1 draw against the out-of-sorts champions. Last weekend, the defender continued his recent good form with yet another eye-catching performance in Everton’s home draw with Wigan.

Baines picked up 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points as he caused Roberto Martinez’s side problems from the first to the last whistle and although Moyes’ side still struggle in the bottom half of the table, their left-back is continuing to accumulate the Fantasy points.

Moyes’ decision to field Seamus Coleman as a right midfielder has garnered the young Irishman much Fantasy attention as an Out-of-Position defender, but as this “Average Position” map below-taken from the Wigan match – shows, it is Baines who is actually playing further forward, despite taking to the pitch as a left-back.

Baines (3) was not just more attacking than Coleman (23), he was also further forward than any of Everton’s midfield, creating chance after chance for the home side; once again, it was simply poor finishing that denied both the club a valuable win and Baines a much-deserved assist or two.

His goal-shy players are a source of frustration right now for Moyes, as the Everton boss pondered post-match:

I don’t think you get better chances in the Premier League than we did today. The longer we didn’t take them the more frustrated we got and the more anxiety came into our play and the crowd. We just have to take those chances. The worrying thing is we are not beating teams at Goodison who, over the years, we have done.

I am saying ‘Is it something else other than just not scoring goals?’ and I am finding it hard to look further than that. It wasn’t just the centre-forward today, there were chances shared around the team and no-one converted any of them. The anxiety is coming from the form and our position (two points above the relegation zone). We are all wondering where we are going to score a goal.

For as much as they are currently not taking them, at least -thanks mainly to Baines- Everton are creating chances aplenty. A look at the chalkboards below illustrates just how much of a threat Baines was on Saturday in comparison to Coleman in terms of balls into the box. Through either his corner-kick duties or balls delivered from the left flank, Baines’ delivery was always menacing.

When combined with the number of passes each player made against Wigan, the Heat Map chalkboards below give further indication of just how attacking Baines’ role is. He made 87% of all passes in the Wigan half compared to Coleman’s 83%, but there is substantial difference when you consider Baines made a total of 62 passes, whereas Coleman made just 27.

At £7.2m in FPL, Baines may be the pricier of the two, but a look at his playing time this season shows he has not missed a single minute of Everton’s league campaign and provides a surety of selection £4.9m Coleman cannot. For defenders, his six assists is twice the amount of second-best Ashley Cole and, in addition, Baines currently has the second-best points haul of any defender in FPL, despite the fact that Saturday’s goalless draw was his team’s first clean sheet in seven league matches.

With the likes of Chris Brunt, Charles N’Zogbia, Matt Eterington, Charlie Adam and Kevin Nolan offering great mid-priced midfield options, many Fantasy Managers have cash to spare and although Baines is one of the costliest defenders, he still offers better value-for-money than most. Those with Tim Cahill for Everton cover could do worse than consider him as an alternative, given the Australian’s imminent Asian Cup duties.

Everton are renowned for picking up the pace in the second half of the season and if Moyes can inspire them to repeat last season’s brilliant turnaround, Baines should see his Fantasy points swell even further.

i have two free transfers, but really don't want/need to make any this week. i think i should use one though and i'll still have two next week, any suggestions? was just thinking of doing a simple jussi>begovic since i'd need to do that down the road here anyway as a way to free up some cash for some planned moves.

people have been saying they would lose money but if someone is out for 3 games or more u should sell I bought Van der Vaart at £7.5m and when he got injured he was valued at £8.5m so I sold him at £8.0m and bought Etherington who has worked out great despite this week he has gone up from £5.7m to £5.9m and Van der Vaart has gone down to £8.2m so if I bought him back know I would have only lost £0.1m which isn't bad but Van der Vaart is due another drop of £0.1m to £8.1m which means I will have lost nothing

With a wild card around the corner, it seems wasteful to do a keeper switch now, esp if Begovich in is your plan. Stoke's fixtures aren't good.

I'd do A Cole out G Johnson this week if I were you. in fact, I've done just that, but then I only lost 0.2 on Cole. I will be reinvesting in Chelsea in January if things are looking up.

No, mine is between Nasri and Tevez.

Although I may well do Brunt for Cahill and i'd be very tempted to stick it on Brunt if I get him in.

Of the two you just mentioned I'd stick it on Nasri as he's at home. Plus I could see Chelsea winning on Sunday.

      I'd keep Cole.

Chelsea results will start picking up and so will the clean sheets. Kolarov is a good purchase but not at the expense of Cole. I'd move another one of your defenders to get Kolarov.

VdV not played 90 mins yet and game may be affected by weather. I'd leave any VdV move to next week at Villa or wait till GW20 when he's at home.

Elmander will still serve you well so be patient with the big Swede.

The Fabs move next week is OK but, again, a tough game at Chelsea so I'd imagine GW20 (Wigan) would be the better week to get Fabs in.

Elmander's tricky - 3 game run means he no longer qualifies as "in form". Plus the contract situation makes things extra complicated.

I can imagine him falling out of favour and out of form very quickly.

That's a tough one to call, Wenger clearly thinks Chamakh is now up to the task as he would have rushed RVP back into the starting line-up sooner had he not, (unlike at the start of the season when he dropped Chamakh sharpish for the Blackburn game.)

I've got questionmarks over Chamakh/RVP - neither are certain starters anymore. Arsenal's fixtures aren't great so there's little incentive to hold onto them.

Chamakh should start, RVP may start also and play in behind him, but that's probly doubtful.. But I wouldnt sweat too much on Chamakh just yet.. He may get rested once the hectic schedule kicks in though and RVP may get more starts, Wenger is still easing him and Fabs in to fitness.. Thats why Im waiting til the next WC to consider bringing both of them in... So my advice is to be patient with them both if ur considering them

It was weird but I actually thought the introduction of RVP and Fabregas didn't impact on the game the other day at all. They must be short of fitness, both of them, and I'm really not that worried about having Fabregas right now, whereas before the West Ham and Newcastle home games, I was desperate to get Fabs in.

      Thanks Guys,

-I like the Idea of Bergovic but Fixtures are not the best either
-Robinson doesn't rotate well with Foster (Foster is a season keeper for me, no matter how hard are the oppositions)
-again... I like Gordon/Mignolet fixtures after ManU but doesn't rotate well with Foster

I think I'll go with big guns, more likely (Hart)

If you had gone Foster - Robinson, you'd have scored more than if you had gone Foster - Harper or Foster - Krul which were the better rotational pairs.

Yeah they didnt really make an impact, Fabregas looked very rusty to me, he turned the ball over a bit and didnt create much... Half of that was United defending well and the other half was Fabs not being 100% yet.. I'm gonna give them time because if they can both stay injury free a long time then they are both brilliant fantasy scorers.. Plus being an Arsenal fan, they are hugely important if we are gonna have any chance of glory this season.. Im als not desperate to bring Fabs in just yet, I think we'll be able to tell when he's back to his influential best..

8.8m to spend, and I'm trying to work out which on-form cheap asset will suddenly turn to custard and need to be replaced by the expensive class-is-permanent asset. What do you reckon?

    Jarvis > Silva (or Brunt)
    Elmander > Torres (or Bent)

My front line currently consists of:
Arshavin, Nani, Gamst Pederson, Adam, Jarvis
    Drogba, Carroll, Elmander.

Honestly, no one who is expensive has been 'class is permanent' except Tevez. If the guys you have are on form, keep them.

For example, I would rather have Brunt right now then Lampard, Gerrard, or Fabregas. In fact, I do. If Gerrard were nailed on and healthy, I would consider it, but as it is, no way.

Also, I would rather have Elmander than Torres, Bent, Drogba, or Rooney. In fact, I do. This is due entirely to fixtures.

Don't be scared by a huge bank: only spend it when its for people who are on form or have good fixtures. Why go from Elmander to Torres when they both have similar form and fixtures?

If that was my front 8, I think Jarvis would be out for Brunt. Arshavin also looked bad, so maybe get rid of him for Silva or Nasri?

However, I agree with the overall tenor of your comment - this season the consistent pointscorers have been found in the bargain bins. VDV, Adam, Brunt, Carroll to name just a few.

I'm not sure about N'Zog now (I have him) as Wigan has scored the fewest number of goals in the Premier League. You have to rely on N'Zog scoring himself or getting BPs, as he will get very few assists.

i'm seriously thinking about taking a punt on raul meireles. None of my rivals are invested in liverpool players (neither am I), and this move would be totally out of left field. Wish i had the $$$ to facilitate kuyt but i really have a good feeling about meireles. His stats don't back it up, only 2 assists, 0 goals, but with good fixtures im thinking that could change.
    Any thoughts?

I bought in Kuyt last week despite him not even being in form.
He rewarded me with seven points which were very useful in a low scoring gameweek.

Kuyt comes in for a fair amount of critisism from Liverpool fans , however he does have a knack of scoring goals and with supposedly easier fixtures he could be in for some more points.

Dont know about Moreles though , if Gerrard comes back then he will no longer be at the centre of things

I doubt it , last time he came back from injury he played cautiously as if he was afraid of reinjury. He seems a little fragile this season , and will likely take a few games to regain confidence

The cautious part usually takes 1 game, which was MU. Plus Fergie left the grass purposely in bad shape as Arsenal relies on smooth rolling balls and the MU defense/mid were in great form. This will all be very different coming GW

You seem to have a decent team for this week, so therefore you can save your transfer.

If you want a west brom player, you can do Parker to Brunt.

If you save the transfer then you won't have that issue. If you make the transfer though, you can take the risk and bench Elmander as Sunderland are pretty strong at home. Therefore you can play 5 across the middle. That's my opinion though. It would make sense to bench the players that have difficult away fixtures (Nani or Elmander_)

Chelsea still looked dodgy at the back against Spurs, with Terry being the only assuring presence (saved them a couple of times) and they will probably concede against United.

Blackburn have West Ham at home. Good chance of a clean sheet and also have good fixtures in the short term future.

yeh the tevez thing is a massive spanner to everyone really and like everyone else im gona wait till friday and see what the situation is. if he plays he stays, if not he goes probably for rvp.

Incase of tevez staying, im tempted to dump drogba for carroll and maybe fabregas for adam..

Keeping I suppose. I could have made a significant dent in the lead I'm chasing in my mini league if he just slotted the penalty.(No 1 & 2 in my league don't have Drogs)

I agree with Lew(below) no need to get rid now I suppose.

The thing, is I'm actually looking at a reason to bring Bent/Odemwingie for one of Tevez/Drogba. Sun/WBA games just to good to ignore.

So many variables to get cover from those teams though.(Brunt/Bardsley)

I think(weather permitting) it could be a good scoring weekend.

Ok, after my usual transfer idiocy last week I'm going for a temporart moment of sanity this week (hopefully).

    ACole -> Samba

Samba have the same home/away-schedule as Vidic up until the WC and opposite of Kolarov/GJ/Jara. Barring injuries this would be the last defender transfer I would have to make before the WC.

Have anybody looked into which keeper rotates best with Foster until the WC?
Begovic looks decent opponentwise even if they share home/away-fixtures.
