Liverpool play out a drab stalemate with FC Utrecht in their meaningless Europa League tie, as Fernando Torres remains benched and Joe Cole remains ineffective. Elsewhere Frank Lampard is upping his preparation for the weekend clash with United and Birmingham appear to have at last found a suitable role for Nikola Zigic…as a training aid…

Roy Hodgson employed a 4-4-2 system with Ryan Babel and young Nathan Eccleston paired in attack. Elsewhere the Liverpool lineup was suitably second-string – with Martin Skrtel the only regular first-teamer in the back four, while Jovanovic, Poulsen, Shelvey and Cole made up a midfield – all players who remain on the fringes of Roy Hodgson’s starting XI.

Fernando Torres was left on the bench then, despite Hodgson publicly promoting the possibility of a start for the Spaniard. Hodgson later revealed that he had been convinced by medical staff to keep Torres out of the action in preparation for the weekend fixture with Fulham…

“I had a vision of Fernando going out there, having a great 45 minutes, it being good for his confidence, maybe scoring a goal and giving him a little lift. I was only going to play him for 45 minutes. He didn’t play against Aston Villa and he was quite looking forward to playing. But when we sat down and we started to talk about it again, it seemed to me the disadvantages or potential disadvantages far outweighed any potential advantage.”

Hodgson was also questioned on the form of Joe Cole, who again disappointed having started the night out on the left flank, but switched inside behind the striker in the second-half. On a night which missed the flashes from Torres, Cole failed to capture the limelight and continues to struggle at Anfield. Hodgson had this to say on the Summer signing’s form…

“He sets himself high standards, he plays on small margins, he’s an honest lad and I’m sure he came off the field thinking, ‘That wasn’t the performance I wanted to give. I’m better than that and I can do better than that. It was just unfortunate he was unable to show that tonight but it certainly wasn’t for a want of trying or through a lack of effort or desire. It didn’t go his way and that can happen with front players.”

Cole is likely to find himself on the Liverpool bench against Fulham then. Indeed, aside from Skrtel, it’s hard to imagine any of last night’s side making an impression on the teamsheet. Steven Gerrard remains a doubt for a return against Hodgson’s former club. The Liverpool boss revealed yesterday that his skipper was still a risk…

“Steven Gerrard is not fit and will be touch and go for Fulham. He is training every day and training harder than anyone. But we have to be careful there is no risk of the injury reoccurring”

Frank Lampard will step up his fitness ahead of the weekend clash with United by taking part in a behind-closed-doors match today at Chelsea’s training headquarters. Lampard came off the bench at Spurs last weekend but looks certain to be in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup for the Stamford Bridge meeting with United. Lampard’s return will likely see Florent Malouda return to a left-flank position having been forced to play a deeper role in recent weeks.

Gerard Houllier’s unsettled relationship with his players continues with reports of Richard Dunne, John Carew, Habib Beye and Stephen Ireland all given a run-out with the reserves in a behind-closed-doors match yesterday. Houllier dropped stand-in skipper Dunne to the bench for the much-needed win over rivals West Brom at the weekend. It remains to be seen if he and the likes of Carew and Ireland figure in the manager’s plans for the trip to Wigan on Saturday. It looks unlikely. Nigel Reo-Coker also got a run-out in the game as he continues his quest for fitness following injury.

And finally…Birmingham’s Roger Johnson has apparently used team-mate Nikola Zigic in training to help him prepare for the confrontation with Newcastle’s Andy Carroll at the weekend…

“Obviously Ziggy is a big lad, which puts you in good stead to face someone like Carroll.”

Johnson is still likely to find the actual clash with Carroll a shock to the system, unless of course Zigic has suddenly mastered the art of actually winning a header and hitting the target in training.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Considering the new management, and that you have no Sunderland defenders, I would go with Onuoha. Or better yet: Bardsley. Also: Sunderland defenders rotates fairly well with Kyrgiakos.

Hi there should I keep Malouda or transfer him out for Lampard or Kuyt since Liverpool have a favourable run of fixtures coming up?
I also have Tevez, is it worth keeping him for now or getting rid and losing money on him? Decisions Decisions!
    Any advice appreciated.

It's one of those things. Malouda has been poor for a while.

I dropped him 4 weeks ago and not missed him at all

I don't like Kuyt as a points scorer and Lampard might not be back to his old self just yet

      I'm keeping hold of Tevez

I really don't have any answers for you 😛

Elmo might just play now considering all the injuries. If you have kept in so long, you might try a couple more games (he bagged a clean sheet last GW). Saving the transfer is probably the best choice, considering the tough run of fixtures coming up. Also: Dunn seems an unreliable pick altogether.

I’ve taken a hit for the last 2 weeks (call it inexperience) but I’m finally pretty happy with my team.

    Reina (Carson)
    Coloccini, Kyrgiakos, Jara, (Dann, A.Cole)
    Nani, Bale, Cahill, Barton, MGP
    Carroll, Torres (K Davies)

I’m thinking of Berba in for Davies from GW19 but only have 1.2M in the kitty. Should I save my transfer this week and swap Cole for Coleman next week to free up cash?

also - how do i link my team?

I'll try to clarify - I want to bring Berbatov in for GW19 as Man U have favourable fixtures. My preferred way to do this is to sell K Davies but that will leave me 1.1M short. Keen to bring Coleman in for A Cole but not this week as I think City are likely to score at least 1 against Everton. Does it look like a good double transfer next week or are there any other suggestions?

This whole Odemwingie injury is killing me....

I'm not at all sure what to do about VDV. When he's fit he's obviously a great player to have in your side, I'm not just not sure how much football he's going to play with the congested schedule around Christmas.

And then there's Lee who I want to get rid of ASAP. Odemwingie's fixtures are so good that I definitely want to keep him, so I need to get rid of Lee this week in order to field a decent side! I've pretty much narrowed it down to:

    Yaya Toure vs Fatty Dunn.

    Thoughts?

Surely he will... Presumably the main reason he didn't play last week was because you went with five at the back, meaning there was one less slot in the midfield. You're at home to the worst team in the league, I reckon he'll play.

P.S. Have you seen the twitter account of the Venkys?!

Very true. I guess it's a bit hypocritical holding VDV's injury record against him, but ignoring Dunn's....

Yaya Toure it is then. Ready for 2 points this weekend as he sits alongside Gazza Barry. 🙁

Well yes that makes sense but i was referring more to the uncertainty around who Steve Kean will pick. You can assume most of the starters will be the same but Dunn isn't that versatile so unless Kean decides to go with one up front (and Dunn just off) he may be on the bench again. He may even play a genuine 4-4-2 with two from Roberts, Kalinic, Hoilett and Mame Diouf playing up top. In that case i can't see where he'd play Dunn.

possible, but like you were saying earlier in the week, these days that seems to suit barry more. I think mancini would worry about making a move like that, yaya likes to carry the ball and even if put in that position would still bring it forward, leaving a hole in his mid defense, its safer put barry, a passer, in a position like that

(altho yaya has lots of experience in that role, hes doing too well in his current position)

Can barely bring myself to look at my bunch of underperforming snood-fanciers... but the comeback must start somewhere...

    Jussi | Robbo
    Kolarov | Coleman | Konch | Foley | Enrique
    Alrbighton | Arshavin (*&%$!) | Nasri | Nani | Davies
Torres | Tevez | Van Persie

    My plan is:

    Arshavin > YaYa
    Tevez > Rooney
    Coleman > Baines
    Enrique > Rafael

It's the top two which afford me the bottom two though.. and I don't want to do them this week. So I'm looking for a one-week stop gap... at the moment it's Arshavin > Walcott (c).

It doesn't take much to see why I'm sh*t at this game....

    Any advice?

Walcott hasn't started a PL game for 7 GWs. Arshavin will almost certainly outscore him (because he will actually be on the pitch...), so I wouldn't do Arsh to Theo.

Arsh to Yaya makes sense, but maybe not til next week. Have you got 2 free transfers, or just 1?

If you want to do the 4 transfers you mentioned, how about Arsh to Yaya and Coleman to Baines this week, and the other 2 transfers next week? Means you only end up with a 4 pt hit, and don't waste a transfer.

Also, you might want to keep hold of Tevez if he plays (and plays well) on Monday.

That's a good plan to minimise the hit... though I think I fancy Arsh v Stoke more than Yaya v Everton. Yaya is sort of to balance Tevez > Rooney... which I'm not even sure on yet, so yeah... I'm back to the drawing board.

Afternoon all! This is my team for the wkend:

    Foster (Krul)

    Jones, Kolarov, Konchesky, Jara (Jags)
Nani, Malouda, Nasri, Nzogbia, VDV or Brunt (Cahill)
    Drogba, Carroll (Elmander)

Can i get peoples opinions on if I have benched the right players? Should I play Elmander?

My transfer this wk is malouda to VDV. If VDV isn’t fit or the Spurs game’s called off, then i will buy Brunt instead.

    Many thanks

on a second thought though, seeing how Frank and Cesc are back in the mix, getting Bardsley for now, might be good as he has great fixtures, and since it saves you budget for possibly getting these big guns aboard.

not bad, i dunno, i know mark had an article sayin rafeal was guarenteed his position now

but expect some changes over the xmas period , i imagine you will keep him till the double gw, where we could fully expect the rb to change
oshea brown wont sit on the bench all season

and in a way rafeal playing so well means he no longer needs to cement himself in the team, fergie doesnt need to worry about his confidence , so easy fixtures (especially those against strong over pacey wingers ) could see him rested

Christmas is the worst time to get Rafael in, Fergie has two RB's waiting in the wings in O'Shea and Brown, and he will need them with the fixture pile up, I would say Vidic and VDS are the only "safe" choices for Christmas, and that being said, Vidic could always see himself rested at least once, despite captaincy (but unlikely in my view), Fergie has also played Evans and LB and has Fabio, so Evra will be rotated too

I have Vidic/Nani/Rooney for the season now I think, unless Rooney really does end up being a fantasy dud this year, and Adam will be the only Blackpool player I will bother with I'd say, not a very beneficial DGW anyway as almost anyone worth their salt will have 2-3 United players and maybe Adam, and with January WC, no one will struggle to fill their teams with these players anyway

God this has been the slowest Fantasy week of the year for me, so bored of it all, want the weekend games to kick off already, have a weak side for this weekend:

    Foster
    Vidic/Simpson/Bardsley
    Nani/Nasri/N'Zogbia*/Dunn/VDV(C)
    Rooney/Elmander

    Krul/Boateng/Piquionne/Jagielka

Saving freebie with uncertainty surrounding RVP/Gyan and can't afford Torres by .1. Maybe that's why I'm bored.

hi guys, where would you look at changing this team for the weekend?

i have one free sub, but don't mind taking a hit if its worth it...
i was thinking maybe Vidic -> Krygiakos & Jarvis -> Nasri

    VDS
    Baines, Vidic, Givet
    Brunt, Dunn, Nzogbia, Nani
    Drogba, Tevez, Defoe

    Subs: Krul, Jara, Jarvis, Foley

    VDV, Nasri, Nani, Silva (Adam)

Who should I bring in? Would like to avoid a 4pt hit as well with the fantasy cup just starting.

Thinking maybe boswinga out for another defender and play 4-4-2? I'm really not liking the look of my forward line though and obviously VDV is doubtful at best. Help needed!
