After a lengthy absence from serious Fantasy consideration, Glen Johnson and his braided locks climb onto the Watchlist. At 7.1 in the FPL game, this definitely falls into the category of a luxury purchase, but we are into the holidays after all, so perhaps it’s time to splurge and to consider treating yourself, especially if you’ve got some cash to spare as budget midfielders and forwards continue to outscore many of the higher priced options.

Although disappointing in comparison to their typically lofty standards, Liverpool’s defence has registered a respectable 6 clean sheets in 17 games this season, with 4 clean sheets coming from 8 home games. While woeful displays like this past weekend at Newcastle cause legitimate reason for concern, the scorecard reveals clean sheets in their last 3 home games, with the last goal by an opponent in league play at Anfield dating back to October. The 6 clean sheets overall leaves them tied for 5th with Birmingham, and trailing only Chelsea, Sunderland, and the two Manchester clubs. With the next 5 games including home matches against Fulham, Wolves, and Bolton, rounded out by away games against Blackpool and Blackburn, Liverpool looks a more attractive defensive option than one might think.

As for Johnson, his reputation for attacking and pressing forward precedes him at times. He was grounded by injury for 6 games during October and early November, but has scored one goal this season (and picked up 3 Bonus Points in that goalscoring game) in the 11 games he’s played, to sit on 39 points. Over 3.5 points per game is reasonable, perhaps, but not worthy of his price tag thus far. However, there is no denying his potential. Johnson has scored 3 goals in each of the past two seasons, with 4 and 5 assists respectively, so he is certainly capable of posting similar returns. Further, despite the absence of returns so far, Johnson has been characteristically involved, with the OPTA stats showing him as a very strong option amongst the Liverpool defenders in terms of both shots and crosses.

The forthcoming transfer window offers a slight caveat. It was not that long ago that Johnson indicated a desire to leave Liverpool after less than favourable comments from Roy Hodgson and transfer rumours persist, but Hodgson’s latest comments insist that Johnson will “be a Liverpool player certainly until the end of his contract.” There remains some risk in Johnson long term, but he should at a minimum be reasonably secure for this current run of favourable fixtures.

For comparison purposes if you’re looking at Liverpool defenders, the question is whether an extra 2.0 or so for Johnson is warranted, with options like Sotirios Kyrgiakos (5.2) and Paul Konchesky (5.0) available. Kyrgiakos has certainly emerged as a strong goalscoring and Bonus Point option with significantly improved playing time odds given Jamie Carragher’s injury, but Daniel Agger remains hopeful of a return from injury shortly and thus questions remain as to whether the big Greek will get all of the next 5 games. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson continues to show an unusually strong allegiance to Konchesky (despite a crucial blunder in the recent Tottenham game), and while the left-back seems unlikely to notch a goal, he has regularly been serving successful crosses so offers assist potential. Given the price differential, both present reasonable options to Johnson, but if you’ve got some extra holiday cash…

No Elmander gets more goals away from home. Sunderland have very weak defence now. 4 changes at the back since Clean sheets against City, Man Utd and Chelsea... Have a feeling Elmander will grab a couple.

Food for thought for anyone thinking about Blackburn players.
Big Sam was fired mainly because the new owners wanted more attacking and entertaining football.
Kean will be under pressure to deliver this, so in my humble opinion over the next few games Blackburn's attacking potential will increase, but probably at the expense of the defence.
Expect a few Blackpoolesque high scoring games.

Blackburn don't have enough players who know how to play beautiful attacking football. They're just going to leak more goals at the back, don't expect their scoring to rise if they can't win the ball back...Think Villa

Kean is presumably the caretaker manager?

I'm not sure i agree with the logic? the owners will presumably want a 'big name' probably foreign manager to take the club forward - i don't think the caretaker manager really stands to lose or gain anything, i reckon he'll jsut want to win games and the easiest way to do that is big sam style, because that's what blackburn are set up for, surely?

I won't pretend to know more about Blackburn than you, but surely there won't be much pressure on the caretaker manager?

Yes he is. He will be under orders and will have to tow the line. He has stated his desire to get the job full time which is unlikely but impossible if he doesn't do it their way. They have also said they want a British manager.

I have to bench one of Dann, Konchesky and Jones - All of whom are at home.

Have Foster in goal and Carroll up front - Could always play Carson instead so don't double up on Brum defence with Carroll snooping around.

Alternatively, could play Foster and bench Dann. Konchesky and Jones offer little other than a clean sheet, Dann at least offers an attacking threat. I may well bench Jones - Although they got a cleansheet at home last time against Wolves, Robbo was MOM. But then again West Ham are bottom of the league. Hmm.

Its all up in the air!

Kolorov - Konchesky - Bardsley (Vidic, Coleman)
Nasri - Bale - NZog - Yaya (Nani)
    Torres - Tevez - Carroll

Given my squad, am I mad for benching both Nani and Vidic??? Seems "WRONG" but right if you see what I mean? If so, what would you do instead?

You mean his petulance and general poor attitude? From what i'm told that is what he is known for. I'm sure Mancini knew that when City splashed the cash so i doubt he will be dropped for it now - because on that basis surely they wouldn't have bought him at all?

Also the fact that he didn't feature on thursday would seem to indicate he is in line for another start.

I have done a statistical analysis on Everton's poor season so far if anybody is interested?

Also, here is a cracking tactical preview from a Blackpool blogger on the Spurs game at the weekend

THANK YOU for pointing out that Bains going foward is the death of Everton's offense! He is a defensive liability, it would make sense if Arteta was injured but he isn't!

Pienaar and Arteta have struggled this season as a result of Bains being allowed to roam foward whenever he pleases, those two are not defenders.

I would avoid spurs strikers. They are subject to rotation and only 1 may be played at a time.

    hey guys
    My front 8
Which 1 would you drop and why!!
    Brunt/Fabs/Nani/Bale/N'zogbia
    Torres/Carroll/Torres

Im thinking Nani/Bale, hard to call!
Rest of players seem to have so much potential.

Well if Hibbert plays it means moving Sir Phil to DM instead of the dutch lad Heintinga(sp?). Wouldnt say that will effect Coleman's position.

    Al-Habsi
    Cole/Kolorov/The Greek
    Bale/Nasri/Cahill/NZogbia
    Torres/Carroll/Elmander

    Subs: Foster/Nani/Ferdinand/Coleman

Main thought is whether I should get Cole out for a Blackburn defender and then shift in El Tev for Elmander. Or maybe just shift out Coleman for a Blackburn defender and be done with it.

The Utd boys aren't moving from the bench.

Appreciate some thoughts from any of you (if it doesn't get lost in the mix that is)

    Cheers.
