As news of early postponements broke, Fantasy Managers were left frantically juggling resources in order to capitalise on a fractured Gameweek, only to find that the freeze had ravaged all but two matches on the fixture list.

Sunderland’s win over Bolton and a 1-1 draw at Ewood were the only sources of returns on offer, and with City’s Eastlands encounter with Everton on Monday the only scheduled game remaining, Gameweek 18 has become a chaotic milestone in the Fantasy season and lady luck is set to play a considerable role in the outcome.

Here’s the notes on yesterday’s chilly encounters…

Danny Welbeck’s fifth goal in six games will win him all the plaudits but Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan also played their part in a three-pronged attack that always looked dangerous once the Black Cats had found their stride. Welbeck’s run over his last six matches has also brought him a total of 10 FPL Bonus Points. The young striker offers outstanding value over Sunderland’s forthcoming run of fixtures with an FPL price tag of just 5.1 will likely enjoy a bandwagon of Fantasy attention over Christmas. One word of caution – he will of course sit out the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford as part of his loan from United – so those who invest immediately will need to wait before they can benefit from any returns.

The Sunderland defence earned their ninth clean sheet of the season – no other Premier League side can match that, including Chelsea and Man City. Steve Bruce’s side have kept 5 shut-outs in their last 8 league matches. Going forward, they have fixtures that could help them build on this fine defensive record, at least once the trip to Old Trafford on Boxing day is out of the way (mun BLP BLA avl NEW blp).

This fine defensive record has been built despite a string of injuries in the the back four. That continued yesterday with John Mensah limping from the pitch on 20 minutes to be replaced by Elmohammady. The Egyptian moved to right-back, with Nedum Onuoha shifting alongside Anton Ferdinand, who himself returned from injury to start this game. Elmohammady at 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, could now be set to enjoy at least a couple of starts at full-back, bringing him back on the radar in the short-term. Phil Bardsley, available at 4.5 looks a stronger option having cemented his role at left-back.

Craig Gordon’s super human save to somehow deny Zat Knight in the first-half will surely rank as the “save of the season” thus far. Gordon returned having missed out at Fulham to an injury but, if he remains fit, is clearly Steve Bruce’s number one and offers value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Lee Cattermole will also miss the Old Trafford trip on Boxing Day. He picked his fifth yellow card of the season and was lucky to escape without seeing red for the third time this year. Young David Meyler will likely come into the side to replace him having dropped to the bench yesterday.

Owen Coyle made two changes to his Bolton lineup. Fabrice Muamba came in for the suspended Mark Davies as expected, although Chung-Yong Lee’s relegation to the bench, with Matt Taylor coming in on the right-flank, was a surprise. Lee leaves for the Asian Cup after the Boxing Day programme – clearly Coyle is preparing his side for his absence by making this move although the Bolton boss later stressed his desire to keep Lee at the Reebok after the Boxing day meeting with West Brom. Coyle is hoping to have Lee around for at least two more fixtures.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies again drew blanks – the Swede has now gone four consecutive Gameweeks without return, while Davies at least mustered a Bonus Point from yesterday’s showing, to go with the assist earned in Gameweek 17. The Reebok encounter with West Brom is crucial to the Fantasy prospects of the pair – fail to score in this one and Bolton next travel to Chelsea and Liverpool. Sales of the previously potent Bolton forward line would look very likely to continue should they reach that point without returns.

The 1-1 draw at Ewood was most notable for the injuries sustained by the home side. Chris Samba was forced from the field before the hour-mark. He has suffered an ankle injury, although Rovers caretaker boss Steve Kean was quick to dismiss this one as a minor setback…

“Chris felt a little tweak in his ankle, a little twist, so we don’t think that is a bad one.”

It remains to be seen whether Samba will be available for the Boxing day clash with Stoke at Ewood.

Phil Jones isn’t anywhere near as fortunate. His Fantasy owners suffered a roller-coaster afternoon after seeing him dropped to the bench by Kean. Jones replaced Samba from the bench but then suffered suspected knee ligament damage. The early prognosis isn’t good according to Kean

“He felt the outside of his knee and he knew straight away, he’ll see a specialist in the morning and I think it will require an operation and quite a long term injury”

Rovers also lost Jason Roberts to a hamstirng injury and he will be sidelined until the New Year.

Morten Gamst-Pedersen’s influence on Blackburn’s play, particularly from set-pieces, was again in evidence and he duly earned another maximum Bonus Point haul. He has now gathered 14 Bonus Points in the last 8 league games – an incredible return. Only two midfielders – Charlie Adam and Charles N’Zogbia, have earned more Bonus this season.

West Ham will be pleased with their point but they also have major injury concerns of their own. Robert Green missed the game after failing to recover from minor surgery this week – he will be expected to return for the Boxing Day encounter at Fulham. The Hammers suffered two injuries in the warm-up for the match with Zavon Hines (knee) and Valon Behrami (hip) both having to drop out. In addition, Victor Obinna failed to make the trip having sustained a leg injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

No, don't sell Hart if you already have him.

Kolarov for Shawcross and Cahill to Van der Vaart are better moves for your team in that GW.

What do we think of Bent? I just put him in but wasn't overly impressed. Seems that Gyan and Wellbeck are sharing the chances that all fell to Bent last year. Still I'll probs keep til Jan wild card, tho wouldn't mind Drog in for after the Arsenal game.

I thought Gyan looked quite poor yesterday. His passes were generally over-hit and missing their intended targets and he had several half chances that he blazed a mile wide each time.

Bent is proven and gets goals. That means he gets very, very heavily marked. However, when the chance presents itself, he delivers - as with the goal (his excellent take and shot being parried into the path of Wellbeck).

Wellbeck looks good value. Of him and Gyan, he looks the far better bet for regular bonus points and assists and goals. He is also less likely to get subbed - Gyan subbed yesterday. 2mil cheaper and it frees up cash elsewhere. I'm sorely tempted.

Guys, its early but thought I would get some early advise on my team....

    Foster (Jaaskelinen)
    Dann Kolorov Vidic Simpson Jones
    Nasri Nani Lampard N' MGP
Balotelli Carroll Elmander 6.5M in the bank!

I'm thinking to not make any transfers for Gameweek 19
But I think for Gameweek 20 with two free transfers and maybe take a 4 point hit?:

    1) Jones to Konchesky/Bardsley/Chelsea DEF?
    2) MGP to VDV?
    3) Need a forward to bring instead of Elmander, I was previously thinking Torres but can only really afford it if I get rid of Vidic so perhaps Bent, so anyone around 10M or so or under really?

Ideally i would upgrade Balotelli to tevez and then just leave elmander and Carroll for now until Van Persie, Defoe or Bent show some form. But obviously if you like having Balotelli, its your choice.

it shouldnt change his prospects of starting, it could do long term obviously as he's not captain therefore doesnt have to start all games, but they would always have to take the captaincy of him after his behaviour, it was mentioned they would after his statement came out etc, any club would!

    I'm looking at this front line for GW20 onwards;

    Drogba (BOL/ AV/ ww)
    Torres (WW/ BOL/ bburn)
    Bent ( BPOOL/ BBURN/ av)

That looks tasty...any reason not to? (would involve 1 x 4 point hit)

I think you will need the cash to sort out your defence and midfield, to be honest.

I imagine you are going to need to get rid of Dunn sooner rather than later, Jones is already out and Coleman's days could be numbered. I'd also want to upgrade Dempsey come WC time, so spending (wasting) money on getting an out of form Torres seems like a pointless exercise to me.

That strikeforce looks nice on paper but the reality this season is that that combination is more likely to yield you massive amounts of frustration every weekend rather than massive amounts of points.

        Thanks nomar for the analysis!
You are right, the plan is...Dunn OUT vdv IN on GW21.
Dempsey will be gone GW20 (to allow me to do Odemw OUT Torres IN)
Jones and Coleman to be dumped first chance during WC.

You're prob correct about "nice on paper" and this season's strangeness....But I'm sorely tempted!
        Thanks again

See I think it could backfire on them, fans are becoming increasingly disaffected (Newcastle fans with their owners, Man Utd fans with theirs and now Blackburn fans) that you wonder if a season or two of boycott would force the owners to sell. Short term pain for long term health.

the problem with that would appear that these people are not really in it for the money/profit. If they were they wouldn't go near football teams in the first place. It seems to be some kind of ego trip they are all on, publicity or whatever so that kind of response by the fans wouldn't really do much imo. The other thing would appear is that these ppl dont seem to give a shit what the fans think/do, ie: ashley and the glaziers are still in charge.

Yeah but if NO-ONE turns up to watch any of the games etc then whats the point for them? It'd never happen though, particularly not with Man Utd, the real supporters would boycott but their seats would be quickly filled.

The winking, diving show pony, natch. Thing is the FA can't act alone or all the foreign star player will bugger off to spain. Needs to be uefa or fifa driven but can't see it happening. Even Barca, the so called club of the people have sold out to the Qatar money bags.

The FA CAN act alone. It's the right decision, just a tough one. Also, all the foreign stars ARE buggering off to Spain anyway. The homegrown rules from the FA would benefit.

The Barca/UNICEF thing is pretty great tho, huh? Catching on with a few other clubs too.

They do it with much success in the states.

Read this statement on the theory behind the wage cap for the NFL/NBA and imagine what it would do for european football.

"The limit exists as a per-player limit or a total limit for the team's roster, or both. Several sports leagues have implemented salary caps, both as a method of keeping overall costs down, and to ensure parity between teams so a wealthy team cannot entrench dominance by signing many more top players than their rivals."

+1. LOL. The rich don't get that much richer, but believe me, they get richer and the poor don't get that much poorer. Its a pretty good solution for those leagues but I would be pissed if they did that to my beloved sport of baseball.

Blackpool and Ian Holloway are showing the way and prove that football for the love of football and not money is alive and well. They were saying on talksport yesterday about an 18 year old Japanese footballer bought by Arsenal and saying Arsenal should look for talent in the UK like Blackpool does but yes in the big clubs its all about Commercial players Asia and European money and international fan development instead of finding local lads that can be trained to do the job. More and more foreign owners does not look good for local talent in big clubs but there is Blackpool to admire at the moment anyway. Capping footballer wages would cause Tevez and Rooney to spin their heads as if they were possessed by a poltergeist, it would be fun to see them try to cap their wages.

I still think Holloway has shown you can train British talent to play well and its high time British lads were given priority in clubs instead of buying players for mega bucks it would be better for the clubs and National teams in the long run. There has to be some lads out there who could be top class footballers given a chance and some quality training, its not rocket science kicking a ball.

Instead of spending 30 million quid on one foreign player you could train a lot of British kids to kick and dribble a ball for that sort of money and learn good tactics, it makes no sense buying the likes of Tevez and then him being a twat when you could have some serious British talent for that sort of money. Quality training in schools and bingo England or Wales or Scotland or NI get in the finals of the World Cup its simples! Its the only way instead of wishful thinking every four years and no action.

Unfortunately the wage cap will never come into football, I think. They'll wave their arms in the air and hire ridiculous lawyers to show it's "against their human rights" for their wages to be capped. And they'll win, unfortunately.

I like the idea. In the NFL the wage cap is per squad, not per player, so you can still spend the majority of it on one player and have the rest of the squad on peanuts. It levels out the playing field somewhat, and will prevent teams from buying players just so opponents can't, only to let them rot in the reserves.

Talk about picking over scraps, I'm 9-7 up in the FPL cup with Tevez (hopefully) and Arteta to play against an opponent whose got Korlov and Coleman. Surely there can't be an Everton shut out this week... They keep looking like they're about to net 4 or 5 and I'm hoping Carlos is going to have a point to prove so a high scoring game on both sides should see me through! Prediction... 2-2.

On FM 2010, I got Forest Green into the Championship (3 promotions in 5 seasons) and then accepted a job offer from Crystal Palace because they'd been taken over by some rich tycoon and I thought it would be a laugh.

Well, it wasn't, it was pretty boring tbh. And I had no saves left from my FGR time so I could go crawling back. Worst decision ever.

Cardozo was a beast alright, him and Foti upfront were ridiculous with the amount of goals they'd bang in. That Foti was a funny one, had him on one game and he was amazing, started a new game and got him again and he was pretty ordinary.

Whilst this will be a disappointing week for 99% of fpl managers, it's a blessing for me- transferred in Nelsen this gw, then when news came in of green being injured I took a 4 pt hit to bring in Robinson. Shame they conceded but if the city game goes ahead i will still have yaya and tevez to wear the armband, if not Nelsen captain.

Well done on Nelson but you lost two points on your goalie transfer-not exactly a blessing surely? My brother-in-law has eight playing. Now that is jammy!

      Nice manouvring.

I'm very happy with my 18 points thus far too. I got Kolarov, Cahill and Tevez(c) if the Citeh game goes ahead.

If not the captaincy goes to Bent so at worst I should make 23 points.

just checked the fixtures and here's how it is:

if city v everton kicks off (and yaya plays at least 1 minute), i win my round

    if it doesn't, i lose

    pretty straight forward.

true, but opponent also has jags and cahill to play. all i need is 1 point out of yaya and i win.

now if HE has an own goal or red card (in 60+ minutes pitch time) or a yellow card (in less than 60 mins total pitch time), THEN i'm screwed. i lose the tie break no matter what metric.

cheaper options at this point. Thinking Koralev or Nelsen or doubling up on Man U defenders and getting Rafael to go w/ Vidic.

Aftershave/perfume is definitely the worst genre of adverts. Always some 'poetic' pish (or artsy farsty in some way), usually in black and white, with some faux-French pretentiousness and completely unrelated to the product they're trying to sell.

      Hate them

strongbad... nice team, a couple of suggestions for you. Get rid of simpson, they don't keep enough clean sheets, you could swap for a sunderland defender or even give Kevin Foley a try as he has more potential for assists and goals. And instead of shipping out Nasri I would ship out Fabregas, I'm an Arsenal Fan and he hasn't had a great season so far and until he gets back to his best and completely injury free hes not worth the money.

      Thanks for the comments.

I nearly got rid of Simpson this week, but I need at least one cheap def. I took out Foley for Simpson so pride is stopping me do that transfer, he can wait anyway till jan wc.

Getting rid of Fab instead of Nasri is an option, gonna wait and see how they both play at the weekend - that was originally the plan this weekend and would have been far more useful.

Any thoughts on who to bench this week?

56 transfers as we play a monthly competition at work. If your not in contention in the last week its a god idea to change your team around before the start of the next month so I tend to change the entire team around according, I've won 2 out of 4 this year, should win this month too as I'm more than 50 points clear but I'm not too fussed about that As I've got my eyes on for the overall prize, and yes I do think I have a chance with the team, I've planned it for the whole monthly, I tend to 2 transfer a week so I will probably ship in Nani and another player this week, putting Nani Captain. the rest of the team is sorted.
