As news of early postponements broke, Fantasy Managers were left frantically juggling resources in order to capitalise on a fractured Gameweek, only to find that the freeze had ravaged all but two matches on the fixture list.

Sunderland’s win over Bolton and a 1-1 draw at Ewood were the only sources of returns on offer, and with City’s Eastlands encounter with Everton on Monday the only scheduled game remaining, Gameweek 18 has become a chaotic milestone in the Fantasy season and lady luck is set to play a considerable role in the outcome.

Here’s the notes on yesterday’s chilly encounters…

Danny Welbeck’s fifth goal in six games will win him all the plaudits but Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan also played their part in a three-pronged attack that always looked dangerous once the Black Cats had found their stride. Welbeck’s run over his last six matches has also brought him a total of 10 FPL Bonus Points. The young striker offers outstanding value over Sunderland’s forthcoming run of fixtures with an FPL price tag of just 5.1 will likely enjoy a bandwagon of Fantasy attention over Christmas. One word of caution – he will of course sit out the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford as part of his loan from United – so those who invest immediately will need to wait before they can benefit from any returns.

The Sunderland defence earned their ninth clean sheet of the season – no other Premier League side can match that, including Chelsea and Man City. Steve Bruce’s side have kept 5 shut-outs in their last 8 league matches. Going forward, they have fixtures that could help them build on this fine defensive record, at least once the trip to Old Trafford on Boxing day is out of the way (mun BLP BLA avl NEW blp).

This fine defensive record has been built despite a string of injuries in the the back four. That continued yesterday with John Mensah limping from the pitch on 20 minutes to be replaced by Elmohammady. The Egyptian moved to right-back, with Nedum Onuoha shifting alongside Anton Ferdinand, who himself returned from injury to start this game. Elmohammady at 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, could now be set to enjoy at least a couple of starts at full-back, bringing him back on the radar in the short-term. Phil Bardsley, available at 4.5 looks a stronger option having cemented his role at left-back.

Craig Gordon’s super human save to somehow deny Zat Knight in the first-half will surely rank as the “save of the season” thus far. Gordon returned having missed out at Fulham to an injury but, if he remains fit, is clearly Steve Bruce’s number one and offers value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Lee Cattermole will also miss the Old Trafford trip on Boxing Day. He picked his fifth yellow card of the season and was lucky to escape without seeing red for the third time this year. Young David Meyler will likely come into the side to replace him having dropped to the bench yesterday.

Owen Coyle made two changes to his Bolton lineup. Fabrice Muamba came in for the suspended Mark Davies as expected, although Chung-Yong Lee’s relegation to the bench, with Matt Taylor coming in on the right-flank, was a surprise. Lee leaves for the Asian Cup after the Boxing Day programme – clearly Coyle is preparing his side for his absence by making this move although the Bolton boss later stressed his desire to keep Lee at the Reebok after the Boxing day meeting with West Brom. Coyle is hoping to have Lee around for at least two more fixtures.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies again drew blanks – the Swede has now gone four consecutive Gameweeks without return, while Davies at least mustered a Bonus Point from yesterday’s showing, to go with the assist earned in Gameweek 17. The Reebok encounter with West Brom is crucial to the Fantasy prospects of the pair – fail to score in this one and Bolton next travel to Chelsea and Liverpool. Sales of the previously potent Bolton forward line would look very likely to continue should they reach that point without returns.

The 1-1 draw at Ewood was most notable for the injuries sustained by the home side. Chris Samba was forced from the field before the hour-mark. He has suffered an ankle injury, although Rovers caretaker boss Steve Kean was quick to dismiss this one as a minor setback…

“Chris felt a little tweak in his ankle, a little twist, so we don’t think that is a bad one.”

It remains to be seen whether Samba will be available for the Boxing day clash with Stoke at Ewood.

Phil Jones isn’t anywhere near as fortunate. His Fantasy owners suffered a roller-coaster afternoon after seeing him dropped to the bench by Kean. Jones replaced Samba from the bench but then suffered suspected knee ligament damage. The early prognosis isn’t good according to Kean

“He felt the outside of his knee and he knew straight away, he’ll see a specialist in the morning and I think it will require an operation and quite a long term injury”

Rovers also lost Jason Roberts to a hamstirng injury and he will be sidelined until the New Year.

Morten Gamst-Pedersen’s influence on Blackburn’s play, particularly from set-pieces, was again in evidence and he duly earned another maximum Bonus Point haul. He has now gathered 14 Bonus Points in the last 8 league games – an incredible return. Only two midfielders – Charlie Adam and Charles N’Zogbia, have earned more Bonus this season.

West Ham will be pleased with their point but they also have major injury concerns of their own. Robert Green missed the game after failing to recover from minor surgery this week – he will be expected to return for the Boxing Day encounter at Fulham. The Hammers suffered two injuries in the warm-up for the match with Zavon Hines (knee) and Valon Behrami (hip) both having to drop out. In addition, Victor Obinna failed to make the trip having sustained a leg injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Is there a maximum number of free transfers one can collect? I already have 2 free transfers, but are contemplating not transferring this week either, if I then get 3 transfers next week. Does anyone know why Gyan has received so little playing time?
    Any comments on my team? Not sure what changes I can make...

    Team:
    Foster (Gomez)
    Vidic, Toure, Cole (Foley, Williamson)
    Nani, Nasri, MGP, Etherington (N'Zog)
    Carroll, Tevez (C), Gyan
    2 free transfers, 6.2 in bank.

    Thanks, Merci, Danke, Takk

      Quite a few things there.... you still got Wildcard?

      You should look at Def, as you have too much cash tied up when you could have cheaper alternatives

      Cech -> Foster/Gordon
      Toure -> Kolarov
      Jags -> Coleman
      Evra -> Rafael
      Dawson ->Danny Simpson

      Would free up 6.0m in funds without really affecting the scoring potential of your team

      Would

        Yeah, that's dead right Dunc.

        But clearly he'd rather have 3 big name and expensive strikers and a sh*tty defence than worry about fielding goalkeepers who are out injured and/or about to be relegated back to the reserves for the rest of the season.

            Ok, better, but still too much money in your strikers.

            You really should get a keeper in who's playing games. Harper is back now so look at getting Gordon, Al Habsi or Robinson in for Krull. However, if you only want 1 GK then get Hart.

            Kolarov is the only guaranteed starter you'd want to play every week, defensively.

            So, get rid of Bent for Carroll (I assume you'd want to keep Torres and Drogs for now). That'll free up enough cash for you to get your defence sorted out.

            You could get Bardsley in for Foley and Rafael or Onouha for Elmo, as an example.

              I had Torres and Kuyt originally for the Fulham game so wasn't going to make more than 1 transfer but the game got cancelled and opted for the city game as I thought thats the game more likely to go ahead plus they have 3 out of 4 games at home. Was tempted by Bale and Defoe but had a good idea that game would get cancelled!

    I watched the Blackburn West Ham game yesterday and I don't think MGP deserved the maximum Bonus points, Scott Parker playing in a weaker team had more influence on the game than MGP. MGP takes all the free kicks and had plenty of chances to score a goal... don't think taking free kicks and orners should be used as indicators for the Man of the Match.. Scott Parker was immense he dragged his team back into the match. I hate the bonus points systen as it can be so irrational most of the time... 2 Bolton Players got bous points yesterday... how come Gordan didn't get a point for making that brilliant save? won them the match!!! yet Kevin Davis a striker who didn't score (thats what strikers are on the pitch for) gets a bonus point, I know he was influential but not enough to score or assist so can't see any rationale behind this bonus points system!

      i sort of agree, although i still think mgp was one of the better players in a shocking game. the 3 bps jsut means more people will keep hold of him so that's a good thing imo

        hes going to be my captain as Nasri didn't play so its good news for me... but I think they should get rid of it altogether. if someone gets an Hattrick then they've already got the points for the achievement why ad another 3 point for the sake of it. I can understand it for efenders, as they can have a really good game and maybe win 5-1 and get only two points but generally speaking its a waste of time and has no place in the game.

          Bent got 2 goals in a game last season and didn't get any BP. I would hate it if they scrapped bonus points, they are one of the biggest debating points (which is a good think imo) and if you know who to look for they can really give you an edge over the casual player

      I thought Pedersen was the best player on the pitch by quite a long way. Parker was obviously West Hams best player but i thought it was one of his worst games in a while. I know he had a hand in the equaliser but he gave the ball away a lot more than usual

        After the Joey Barton incident, I felt sorry for MGP but after his antics on Parker Yesterday.. I think Joey should have knocked him out as hes a coward! My point was MGP takes all corners and free kicks and they played a major part in his bonus points... but none of the corners or freekicks had any influence on the score so he wasn't best player on the pitch. Parker was carrying a team that is bottom of the Table on his own.

          "none of the corners or freekicks had any influence on the score so he wasn’t best player on the pitch"

          He didn't just trot on and off to take the set pieces you know. Did you watch the game? I've never seen Pedersen win so many tackles in a game before. I know it might be wrong but i liked seeing Pedersen putting himself about a bit, including the body check on Parker

                Ah, that's why I can never understand my doctors' handwriting on prescriptions. They write in medical language. Can you get Rosetta Stones courses in that?

                  about 99% of doctors have the worst handwriting...i can't understand it really you'd think they might save some people by writing a bit slower

        Better go, these dishes won't wash themselves. How good would it be if someone came up with a way of not having to do dishes. Ah well, I can only dream.

      Get rid of Ferguson for someone like Albrighton or Nzogbia. Bench Bent for your Ferguson replacement, 352

      If that game had gone ahead I might have bought in Delap last minute and captained him. 12 throw assists guaranteed.

    Hello

    Does someone know for sure how that emergency captain rule works?
    My captain was nasri and emergency captain is selected by value.
    Drogman did not play, so do I get zero points for captain or is there any chance that the highest value player that actually played might get the armband (tevez)?

    cheers

      It keeps going down the line until it lands on someone who has played. So if Tevez plays, he's your captain.

    Need some help started the season well but starting to struggle

    Reinna (Foster)
    Sagna / Coleman / Jagielka / Samba (Elmo)
    N'Zog / MGP / Malouda / Arshavin (Nolan)
    Torres (c) / Elmander (Rodellaga)

    Considering ditching Malouda / Arshavin / Elmander and bringing in Lamps, what do you think????

        is VDV back for boxing Day, if so thats a definite.

        Like the Kolarov for sagna idea but samba may be out after yesterday.

        Not sure about Rooney but you would think ke will start scoring soon

      They reckoned he'd miss 6 to 8 weeks since the op - and he's missed what? two since then? End of Jan is a good estimate (into W/C time)

    There are rumours that Chelsea have asked for the game against Manchester United to be replayed in 2005 instead.
