As news of early postponements broke, Fantasy Managers were left frantically juggling resources in order to capitalise on a fractured Gameweek, only to find that the freeze had ravaged all but two matches on the fixture list.

Sunderland’s win over Bolton and a 1-1 draw at Ewood were the only sources of returns on offer, and with City’s Eastlands encounter with Everton on Monday the only scheduled game remaining, Gameweek 18 has become a chaotic milestone in the Fantasy season and lady luck is set to play a considerable role in the outcome.

Here’s the notes on yesterday’s chilly encounters…

Danny Welbeck’s fifth goal in six games will win him all the plaudits but Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan also played their part in a three-pronged attack that always looked dangerous once the Black Cats had found their stride. Welbeck’s run over his last six matches has also brought him a total of 10 FPL Bonus Points. The young striker offers outstanding value over Sunderland’s forthcoming run of fixtures with an FPL price tag of just 5.1 will likely enjoy a bandwagon of Fantasy attention over Christmas. One word of caution – he will of course sit out the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford as part of his loan from United – so those who invest immediately will need to wait before they can benefit from any returns.

The Sunderland defence earned their ninth clean sheet of the season – no other Premier League side can match that, including Chelsea and Man City. Steve Bruce’s side have kept 5 shut-outs in their last 8 league matches. Going forward, they have fixtures that could help them build on this fine defensive record, at least once the trip to Old Trafford on Boxing day is out of the way (mun BLP BLA avl NEW blp).

This fine defensive record has been built despite a string of injuries in the the back four. That continued yesterday with John Mensah limping from the pitch on 20 minutes to be replaced by Elmohammady. The Egyptian moved to right-back, with Nedum Onuoha shifting alongside Anton Ferdinand, who himself returned from injury to start this game. Elmohammady at 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, could now be set to enjoy at least a couple of starts at full-back, bringing him back on the radar in the short-term. Phil Bardsley, available at 4.5 looks a stronger option having cemented his role at left-back.

Craig Gordon’s super human save to somehow deny Zat Knight in the first-half will surely rank as the “save of the season” thus far. Gordon returned having missed out at Fulham to an injury but, if he remains fit, is clearly Steve Bruce’s number one and offers value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Lee Cattermole will also miss the Old Trafford trip on Boxing Day. He picked his fifth yellow card of the season and was lucky to escape without seeing red for the third time this year. Young David Meyler will likely come into the side to replace him having dropped to the bench yesterday.

Owen Coyle made two changes to his Bolton lineup. Fabrice Muamba came in for the suspended Mark Davies as expected, although Chung-Yong Lee’s relegation to the bench, with Matt Taylor coming in on the right-flank, was a surprise. Lee leaves for the Asian Cup after the Boxing Day programme – clearly Coyle is preparing his side for his absence by making this move although the Bolton boss later stressed his desire to keep Lee at the Reebok after the Boxing day meeting with West Brom. Coyle is hoping to have Lee around for at least two more fixtures.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies again drew blanks – the Swede has now gone four consecutive Gameweeks without return, while Davies at least mustered a Bonus Point from yesterday’s showing, to go with the assist earned in Gameweek 17. The Reebok encounter with West Brom is crucial to the Fantasy prospects of the pair – fail to score in this one and Bolton next travel to Chelsea and Liverpool. Sales of the previously potent Bolton forward line would look very likely to continue should they reach that point without returns.

The 1-1 draw at Ewood was most notable for the injuries sustained by the home side. Chris Samba was forced from the field before the hour-mark. He has suffered an ankle injury, although Rovers caretaker boss Steve Kean was quick to dismiss this one as a minor setback…

“Chris felt a little tweak in his ankle, a little twist, so we don’t think that is a bad one.”

It remains to be seen whether Samba will be available for the Boxing day clash with Stoke at Ewood.

Phil Jones isn’t anywhere near as fortunate. His Fantasy owners suffered a roller-coaster afternoon after seeing him dropped to the bench by Kean. Jones replaced Samba from the bench but then suffered suspected knee ligament damage. The early prognosis isn’t good according to Kean

“He felt the outside of his knee and he knew straight away, he’ll see a specialist in the morning and I think it will require an operation and quite a long term injury”

Rovers also lost Jason Roberts to a hamstirng injury and he will be sidelined until the New Year.

Morten Gamst-Pedersen’s influence on Blackburn’s play, particularly from set-pieces, was again in evidence and he duly earned another maximum Bonus Point haul. He has now gathered 14 Bonus Points in the last 8 league games – an incredible return. Only two midfielders – Charlie Adam and Charles N’Zogbia, have earned more Bonus this season.

West Ham will be pleased with their point but they also have major injury concerns of their own. Robert Green missed the game after failing to recover from minor surgery this week – he will be expected to return for the Boxing Day encounter at Fulham. The Hammers suffered two injuries in the warm-up for the match with Zavon Hines (knee) and Valon Behrami (hip) both having to drop out. In addition, Victor Obinna failed to make the trip having sustained a leg injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    ive lost patience with elmander.
sick of his low scores. its too difficult to predict his form either home or away.
im getting rid for rooney. especially with the double game week and positive united fixtures comin up.
VDV should be firing after a decent rest too

In the fullness of time, yes It would be wise to transfer him out for a DGW player. There will be plenty to choose from.

Varney wouldn't be a poor third choice striker.

just want to get something off my chest. I'm not a hunter but im told that in places like in the arctic, where indiginous people sometimes might, might, hunt a wolf, they'll take a double edged blade, and they'll put blood on the blade, and they'll melt the ice and stick the handle in the ice, so that only the blade is protruding, and that a wolf will smell the blood and wants to eat, and it will come and lick the blade trying to eat. So what happens is when the wolf licks the blade, of course, he cuts his tongue, and he bleeds, and he thinks he's really having a good thing, and he drinks and he licks and he licks, and of course he is drinking his own blood and he kills himself, thats what the Imperialists did with us with crack cocaine. you have these young brothers out there who think they are getting something they gonna make a living with, they is getting something they can buy a car, like the white people have cars, why can't i have a car?
they getting something they can get a piece of gold, white people have gold, why can't i have gold? they getting something to get a house, white people have a house, why can't i have a house? and they actually think that theres something thats bringing resources to them, but they're killing themsleves just like the wolf was licking the blade, and they're slowly dying without knowing it. thats whats happening to the community. Thats exactly, precisely what happens to the community. and instead of blaming the hunter who put the damn handle and blade in the ice for the wolf, that what happens is the wolf gets the blame, gets the blame for trying to live, thats what happens in our community, you don't blame the person, the VICTIM,
you blame the OPPRESSOR, Imperialism, white power is the enemy,
was the enemy when it first came to Africa, and snatched up the first African brothers here against our will, and is the enemy today!!

    1) Fantasy Cup updates
    2) RMTs
    3) Snow reports
    4) Is VDV injured
    5) DGW questions
    6) Complete random rubbish.

When will the cricket be mentioned again. It's gone pretty quiet over the last 48 hours.

Who thinks VDV will cost more than Malouda at the start of the next FPL season?

Will Drogba ever hit 13m in FPL again?

How many more weeks until Rio Ferdinand gets injured again?

Do you think a higher percentage of the football players from the top half or the bottom half of the premiership know of the existence of FPL?

As above, but know of the existence of FPL AND FFS?

What food do you like to buy when stopping at a service station while travelling to a football match?

^ ^ ^ Some questions for people to ponder, or perhaps have a try at answering amidst the boredom of the snow week ^ ^ ^

Thanks, yeah a lot depends on whether he has reserve captain set to Form or Value (i don't think I can tell yet??). If value, then we both have Tevez(c), in which case it's:

        Me: 4 points & Kolarov & Coleman
        Him: Hart & Toure

If not, then he'll get MGP captain and it will be

        Me: Tevez(c), Kolarov & Coleman
Him 1 point, Tevez, Hart & Toure

        Pretty close...

Starting a comp in GW23, staying alive in this comp should result in green arrows & a nice improvement in rank. Of course if you are in the top 10K then it's abit harder. Details in link.

You have only failed to make the top million 3 times all season. I think I am up to 7 times. I am ranked higher than you which proves you are more consistent but I have better scoring weeks.

Maybe I could make it a one chance then you go out league? You would have made it to GW15 in that case. GW16 more than made up for the 2 bad weeks. If you finished 999000 every week for example you would end up on quite a decent rank. If there is an easy way to work it out I'll see how many points that would equal & what rank. Even the good teams will struggle not to have that bad week to get knocked out. Maybe 5 GWs & a winner could be found in this format.

hehe, I get Jussi if the game is cancelled. Would never have thought I would EVER capt him at the beginning of the season.

I think many teams are kicking themselves that they dont have a playing back up keeper this gw, as it might be the difference between winning and losing a h2h.

    BBC Weather report!

    "Monday

A bitterly cold start with mist and freezing fog patches especially in the south. Mainly dry today with bright or sunny spells. Temperatures remaining below freezing in most places. Winds light and variable.

    Monday night

It will be dry with mist and clear spells leading to another severe frost. Freezing fog patches will reform. Light variable winds or calm."

On the radio this morning, their saying that the pl are looking at making undersoil heating compulsary because of the amount of games off. I wonder how many of the games were called off due to the park being unplayable? Not many i would imagine. Now it makes it easier to keep games on, but its another way of crippling smaller clubs who do well and then end up paying the price for that success. Sure, they get big bucks when they go up, but its not the installation costs, but the future maintainance costs that hurt them

Exactly. Its not a massive problem. It happens every so often, but not every year. They have stupid things like that in Scotland. To get into the spl, you need u.h, all seater stadia, etc. You now have some sides knocking about in the lower leagues, all this criteria, after one crack at the big time probably wishing they never bothered!

This doesn't make sense. I'm sure nearly all of the premier league clubs have undersoil heating, but that didn't make a difference at the weekend. I'm guessing a lot of games were called off due to restriced access to the stadiums.

Every one except Blackpool. I dont know how many they had called off last year but dont remember them having a backlog of fixtures(granted i didnt really keep an eye on it, but had fixed odds most midweeks!) Its the saftey reasons getting to the ground. Which i can accept as its the way the world has gone. Sure if a fan slipped and broke a leg, they wouldnt hessitate to sue their beloved club!

Just worked out that if you came 1000000th every gameweek & never took a hit you would be on 778 points & ranked 770000 overall. Hopefully there aren't too many here below that standard. Expected a slightly higher rank.

It's going to be incredibly tight for me in the fantasy cup. I'm up against a guy who doesn't even play the game anymore, but my unecessary hits at the weekend put me on the back foot. I'm pretty sure I need his captain to be set to form, for Everton to do concede or do nothing tonight, or for the match to be called off.
