Last night, the scene was seemingly set for Man City; their captain withdraws his transfer request following a period of unrest and with so many games snowed off, Roberto Mancini’s side would soar to the top of the table just in time for Christmas if they managed a victory…. Then along came David Moyes to burst the Abu Dhabi bubble.

City went into the game strong favourites but a look at their home form shows they have scored just two goals in the last five games at Eastlands whereas on the road, they have grabbed eleven goals over the same number of games. So far this season, away from home when the onus is on their opponent’s to attack, City have excelled both offensively and defensively; not only have they scored more goals on the road than any other team, they have the joint-best record for goals conceded, too.

At home, however, they have the second-worst tally in the league; a total of nine goals scored is better only than Wigan and Birmingham’s eight. Outwith the three goals in their first home game of the season against Liverpool, City have scored just six times in the subsequent eight home games.

In Fantasy terms, it’s best summed up by the returns of Carlos Tevez; his last five home games read (1,2,1,8,2) and last five away games read (11, 12, 8, 16, 1). When teams play deep, it seems, City are struggling to break them down.

Yaya Toure has -somewhat surprisingly- been fielded in a role playing behind Carlos Tevez this season and the two “Average Position” maps below are taken from the last home and away games the two have played together.

The top map is from City’s game at Fulham and shows how offensively Tevez (32) was positioned. By staying so high up the pitch, he allowed his midfield to bomb forward, as shown by Toure’s (42) position, as the ex-Barcelona man played higher, on average, than David Silva. Between them, Tevez and Toure grabbed three goals and an assist in City’s 4-1 win that day. With their hosts pushing on, it was easier for City to exploit any gaps left in the Fulham defence.

The bottom map is taken from last night’s encounter with Everton and illustrates City’s problems when face with a well-drilled opposing side. On average, Tevez was barely higher than the halfway line, with little space between Toure and himself, particularly in comparison to the Fulham example.

This is backed up by the passing heat maps of both players: although their “Passed Made” were higher up the pitch against Everton than against Fulham, the above “Average Position” map shows them lower, which goes to show how often the pair must have dropped deep when not on the ball.

For all City’s possession -they had 69% of the ball- Everton showed their opponents lack the guile to do any real damage. Mancini’s side may well have had plenty shots but many were wild efforts that came from a desperation to rescue the situation and were subsequently blocked or off-target. The hosts had just five shots on target last night and it took a deflection from Phil Jagielka to grant them a consolation goal.

Give Mancini credit; he seems to have the team’s shape and personnel pretty much nailed away from home, but what is clear from these last few Eastlands matches is that City need a little more craft and intelligence on the ball at home. Alternatively, perhaps a change in formation or player roles -David Silva in the hole behind a Tevez and/or a front two?-could be the answer to their problematic home form. One thing is for sure, though, something need to change if they are to maintain their title drive. Mark Hughes can tell the Italian that much.

Interesting stuff Sir P. I was too busy hiding behind the sofa to notice that much about Citys tactics.... anxious stuff!

One thing I'd add to that though is how easily Everton dealt with Tevez (again)..... all it takes is an organised back line, and a solid DM such as Fellaini to stop him getting the space he needs to play in.

I dont think Tevez has ever scored against Everton, so predictions of a hat-trick were always going to be extremely unlikely

Paulos, how do you factor in the quality of the opponents when assessing home vs. road form? If I read correctly, City's last 5 at home were ARS MAN BIR BOL EVE, while their last 5 away were wol wba ful stk whm. BIR and EVE may not have high table positions, but their defenses can rise to the occasion.

Keep an eye on Blackpool - Liverpool game, you'll be stuffed if that games is off (very likely if cold weather keeps up). In fact I'd ditch the Turtle anyway, Rafael look a much better option

Seems alright, just save your transfer for next week to get rid of Elmander for Welbeck and Pedersen to Yaya perhaps to take advantage of both those players double homegames.

I would also captain Torres in case he plays as worst case it will just move to Tevez (set on value) and if this article is correct he should get an awesome score!

Nzog is a good shout, he has served me well in the past plus guess it spreads the risk if City do sod all like last night as you have Tevez cover.

Carroll is very good but I just think with Sunderlands form and the form of Welbeck with two decent home fixtures, its too difficult to ignore. If the returns dry up after that get Carrol in then.

Plans don't really work, made one last year and ended up aborting it.

Injuries/suspensions, form and cancellations will inevitably make you want to switch ship. Not a bad idea to keep what you want to do in mind, but I don't think plans work.

I agree, plus the fact that Arteta is back, will take away some of his set piece duties. Also, do you think Arteta's returns will get better now? He will be deployed in a more attacking role surely.

Im bloody well hoping Arteta goes back to an attacking role, hes wasted playing deep. Hopefully Moyes hand will be forced with Cahill gone. Plus now that Saha is back, Arteta has someone decent up front to pass into.

yeah i reckon arteta may be worth considering, I reckon arteta will have to step up to the attacking mid role unless Rodwell is given a licence to get forward, fellaini of course also played high up the field for a while last season. @ 8.0 though he may be worth a punt if he hits some sort of form..

Rodwell will play in the Cahill role, so makes him a good option, although Arteta is also likely to get forward a lot more, especially as Fellaini is behind him now

Everton desperately need some form from their strike force. Yak and Saha need to pull their fingers out. When Cahill goes its not obvious where the goals are going to come from. They can't keep relying on the midfield to score.
Does Moyes even have any funds to strengthen in Jan? Donovan would help. Do they keep faith with Yak and Saha? wait for Beckford to come good? Adebayor loan?

Ade likes to stay in the box and poach, which is handy for them, seeing as they have 9 other very hardworking outfield players. It's their main problem imo, a lack of players in the box, often it's just Cahill in a goalscoring position with one of Beckford/Saha/Yakubu floating on the edge.

Just because Everton won last nights match, doesn't make them a great team. The league doesnae lie, although Rodwell and Afro man are infinity times better than the other central midfield pairing they had. Still, Everton mess up against the mediocre teams therefore - not a great team.

Post Xmas last year, they were the third best team in the league, statistically. And nothing much has changed since then... They've dominated the majority of games they played this season. I read some stat a few weeks into the season, when Everton were virtually, that cumulatively they'd had more possession than any other team in the league.

They are a very good side.

I am in agreement with Jamsiep, he is actually poor for us, Behrami is a million times better when he plays, just Parker puts in crunching, stupid tackles which make the highlights on MOTD and he is involved going forward. However I watch the majority of West Ham games on the internet (Fully) and Parker gives the ball away too much and seems to think that he is better than the rest of our team, and they think it to, which has been our problem this season, I would be glad to see the back of him.

I wouldn't go so far as saying he is 'poor', because he does a decent job for you and would be missed, but he is so overrated it's unbelievable.

His ball retention is absolutely awful.. I lost count of the number of times during the Blackburn game that he lost the ball, yet the commentators still say positive things about him immediately after losing the ball. Like there was one time where he was running with the ball, took a horrible heavy touch and lost it, yet all the commentator said was 'another surging run from Scott Parker'.

Exactly, I probably had the same feed as you for that game, mind you I usually get the foreign ones. Even for the goal, all over the Live Text everywhere.

"A brilliant run from Scott Parker eventually set up Stanislas to tuck home the equaliser"

Or stuff like that, even though he gave the ball away and the original run was average to be fair. Annoys me to much.

I just looked at this (I.E didn't even realise before I bigged up Behrami).

5 prem games he has played this season, results were.

          West Ham 1-3 Chelsea
          Stoke 1-1 West Ham
West Ham 2-1 Newcastle (We played well that day and were unlucky)
Arsenal 1-0 West Ham (Same again)
          Brum 2-2 West Ham
          West Ham 3-1 Wigan.

And Parker has played almost every game. If we kept up that sort of form with Behrami in the team all season we wouldn't be bottom.

On a side note, can you explain this to me.. Why did Diamanti leave, first off, and secondly for so little? He looked a quality player. I thought West Ham would've been fighting to hold onto him, also even when at the club he rarely started?

He was quite old, I don't actually know why he left, we may have had him on loan. We also got Obinna, who IMO, is a better, slightly less random, younger version of him. And the reason Diamanti probably didn't start is that he was old. Also Zola leaving might have had something to do with Diamanti going, just speculation that though.

I have three Liverpool players, and am worried about the Boxing Day game being called off, however, I don't really want to get rid of them as they have two good home games coming up, so I may have to just hope that the game goes ahead, and if I'm short a player, I'm short a player.

I should have this team (Theoretically) by GW24 (Man U + Blackpool DGW)

    Jaask Foster
    A.Cole Rafael Evatt Hutton Kolarov
    Adam Nasri Nani Malouda VDV
    Rooney Bent Carroll

5 players for the DGW, wildcard two weeks after it, and no points hits to get there. Obviously this won't happen but theoretically, this is what I am going to do.

its stupid as it will fk up the premier league...6 week break in which ill be bored as sh*t

but then if uve ever been to the middle east its unbearable to go out in the summer...particularly if ur english and ur used to cold weather ...england would play worse then usual

The premier league should refuse to let its players go to the world cup. that would throw a spanner in to FIFAs corrupt plans.

That Balotelli is a bit of an idiot isn't he?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-city/8216710/Manchester-City-striker-and-Golden-Boy-award-winner-Mario-Balotelli-says-only-Lionel-Messi-better-than-me.html

    A quote:

When asked for his opinion of Arsenal midfielder Wilshere, the 18 year-old who made his England debut earlier this season, Balotelli was dismissive of a player regarded as one of the Premier League’s rising stars.

He said: “What's he called? Wil...? No, I have not heard of him yet, but next time I play against Arsenal I will have to pay attention.

“Maybe I could show him the Golden Boy and remind him that I won it.”
