Last night, the scene was seemingly set for Man City; their captain withdraws his transfer request following a period of unrest and with so many games snowed off, Roberto Mancini’s side would soar to the top of the table just in time for Christmas if they managed a victory…. Then along came David Moyes to burst the Abu Dhabi bubble.

City went into the game strong favourites but a look at their home form shows they have scored just two goals in the last five games at Eastlands whereas on the road, they have grabbed eleven goals over the same number of games. So far this season, away from home when the onus is on their opponent’s to attack, City have excelled both offensively and defensively; not only have they scored more goals on the road than any other team, they have the joint-best record for goals conceded, too.

At home, however, they have the second-worst tally in the league; a total of nine goals scored is better only than Wigan and Birmingham’s eight. Outwith the three goals in their first home game of the season against Liverpool, City have scored just six times in the subsequent eight home games.

In Fantasy terms, it’s best summed up by the returns of Carlos Tevez; his last five home games read (1,2,1,8,2) and last five away games read (11, 12, 8, 16, 1). When teams play deep, it seems, City are struggling to break them down.

Yaya Toure has -somewhat surprisingly- been fielded in a role playing behind Carlos Tevez this season and the two “Average Position” maps below are taken from the last home and away games the two have played together.

The top map is from City’s game at Fulham and shows how offensively Tevez (32) was positioned. By staying so high up the pitch, he allowed his midfield to bomb forward, as shown by Toure’s (42) position, as the ex-Barcelona man played higher, on average, than David Silva. Between them, Tevez and Toure grabbed three goals and an assist in City’s 4-1 win that day. With their hosts pushing on, it was easier for City to exploit any gaps left in the Fulham defence.

The bottom map is taken from last night’s encounter with Everton and illustrates City’s problems when face with a well-drilled opposing side. On average, Tevez was barely higher than the halfway line, with little space between Toure and himself, particularly in comparison to the Fulham example.

This is backed up by the passing heat maps of both players: although their “Passed Made” were higher up the pitch against Everton than against Fulham, the above “Average Position” map shows them lower, which goes to show how often the pair must have dropped deep when not on the ball.

For all City’s possession -they had 69% of the ball- Everton showed their opponents lack the guile to do any real damage. Mancini’s side may well have had plenty shots but many were wild efforts that came from a desperation to rescue the situation and were subsequently blocked or off-target. The hosts had just five shots on target last night and it took a deflection from Phil Jagielka to grant them a consolation goal.

Give Mancini credit; he seems to have the team’s shape and personnel pretty much nailed away from home, but what is clear from these last few Eastlands matches is that City need a little more craft and intelligence on the ball at home. Alternatively, perhaps a change in formation or player roles -David Silva in the hole behind a Tevez and/or a front two?-could be the answer to their problematic home form. One thing is for sure, though, something need to change if they are to maintain their title drive. Mark Hughes can tell the Italian that much.

Guys want to get in a Man Utd defender and would prefer Rafael over Evra or Ferdinand to save cash. But will Rafael play the 4 games over Xmas/New Year?

dont think that he will start away against teams like Birmingham. Ferguson tends to play O'shea or Brown against physical sides away.

If he's benched it will be tactical, he was brought in to stop Bale and has cemented his place since then. I don't think he'll play at Bir. I see O'shea there.

He has been pretty amazing the past few games and I can't see O'Shea or Wes Brown doing something so amazing in a reserve match that his position will be in risk.

He is also bound to start scoring. He really got forward lately - a la Kolarov.

      Great pick-up.

Depends on your finances. I'd feel sick if I got a player this early then found the game postponed forcing me to do another transfer or have less players available.

Depends how much you need that 0.1m. With the current weather I'd wait. You may be making a transfer for a guy from the same team, and that team may not play this weekend.

Theres a chance that when Arteta returns Coleman wont be a guarenteed starters.

Phil Neville is first choice RB.

midfield will be Arteta, Rodwell, Fellaini, Cahill and Fellaini.

Where does this fit Coleman? He also got Osman as competition.

Wouldn't bring him in, but if you have him already it makes sense to hang on.

I didn't bail during the Coleman fire-sale a few weeks back and that has paid off so far.

Currently have too much competition in the squad though so looking to downgrade a defender in the coming weeks to someone v cheap I can leave as a 15th man - Coleman likely to be shipped in that instance.

Tough but I would choose Konchesky.

Kyrgiakos is a better option but we dont know what will happen if Agger returns.

Skrtel is the most expensive but he doesnt really score points. He'd be the poorest choice imo.

Yeah, I have Hart and Kolarov but I'm sitting Kolarov as Newcastle are tasty at home.

Actually, without Toure I'm not overly keen on Hart either but my other keeper is Carson. If Al Habsi was playing at home I'd be tempted to use one of my 2 free transfers this GW on him.

At the moment I'm playing hart in goal and Foley, Cashley and Hangeland in defence.

Really tempted to either sell Konchesky for Raphael or do Cashley for Vidic.

Cashley to Vidic is actually looking more and more tempting with every passing minute adtually.

Bale is going for Adam anyway once he has served his suspension (Cahill goes for VdV once the Asia cup starts) so I have no problem sitting his ass down this GW.

I'd sell him this week but since I'm probably going to play all 3 of my strikers (Tevez, Carroll and K Davies) can't play all 5 of my mids anyway, so any transfer in would only be for a place on my bench.

          Unless I drop Nasri............................

Im thinking the same with Bale and Cahill for Adam and VDV.

Im also thinking of Albrighton when Villa get easier fixtures.

Adam could be a goldmine especially if their next home game get postponed. That could be 3DGWs for him.

Alright, my defence needs a shakeup now.. Two free transfers this week 2.7m in bank. Defence is:

    Foster Robinson
    Ridgewell Jagielka Toure Elmo Jara

Was gonna ditch Ridgewell next week coz of tough fixtures, Toure I wanna keep coz he's only out for one ad Elmo will probly go too.. Was thinking Jags to Baines and not sure anout the other moves yet.. Thoughts? Cheers

Sunderland struggling for defenders at the moment so Elmo may well get some gametime (though obviously in for negative points this week). Everton largely inneffective at home so keeping Ridgewell this week may not be a mistake either, I am considering doubling up Foster and Ridgewell this week. Birmingham not scoring too many so any Everton defender not a bad shout, Baines more likely to score well when Everton away than Jagielka, when at home largely no difference.
Ah just spotted that you don't intend the Ridgewell move till next week.

Not so sure your defence does need such a shake up. If you're set on Baines for Jagielka than do it, you will still have 2 free next week.

Yeah I might as well keep Ridgewell in coz he's playing and I dont really feel I need to ship him out til next week when his fixtures get tougher.. I could just do the Baines transfer and keep Elmo for now.. The only problem is the fixtures with my defence, Elmo @ United and Ridgewell and Baines will clash.. Next week I was planning on getting some United cover, probly for Ridgewell.. Decisions decisions

      my qaundry exactly neo
I'm sticking with zog i think
only reason i nearly ditched him for yaya was the wigan game getting called off
had malouda from the start but we may be the only two people that still have him
having said that, I'm probably gonna ship in a defender for simpson (onuoha) and anyone for elmander after this week so that all my bases are covered for snow chaos
I think its time to stock up across the board , subs included, with mid to cheap priced performers and have ridiculous bench options instead of rubbish cheapies
first time in a long time that it's possible
so...on that note, I'd ditch malouda

A question for all you knowledgable folk who watched the Everton-Man City game:

When Balotelli was put through 1-1 with Howard his shot hit the post and bounced back into play, Howard then swatted it away (a bit) and he subsequently saved from a follow up Tevez shot. The question is - why was it not a penalty when Howard came off his line and took Balotelli out without getting any ball? The ball stayed in play and Howards 'tackle' prevented Balotelli from tapping home.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't want it to be a goal and I'm not even sure it should be, afterall none of the City players or fans even appealed so I'm guessing there's a rule there somewhere that explains it?

    Thoughts?
