Now that we’ve had a couple of days of turkey (and goal) feasts it’s time to try and get back into a fantasy routine once more, albeit an incredibly hectic one, as gameweek twenty looms large before the current one has even finished.

The captain’s poll has been updated for gameweek twenty and with under a day until the deadline closes in on us anyone looking for a vote and opinions of their peers will need to get cracking, sharpish. Here’s a few folks we expect will be the hot contenders…

Steven Gerrard/Fernando Torres
Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool. Based on results and recent history you can’t really consider them one of the big clubs any more as they look to fight for a place in the Europa League once more next year, but when a favourable fixture at Anfield comes along, you can’t help but recall, and almost expect, The Reds of old to return. Steven Gerrard always leads his club with a full heart and with the back-up of set-piece and penalty dominance at least has a safety cushion to fall back on.

Team-mate Fernando Torres has a record at Anfield that Fantasy Managers always want a slice of with his 44 goals in 48 home league appearances. The visit of Mick McCarthy’s Wolves means that the Spanish hitman and his captain will surely be dominating the thoughts of managers far and wide – whether they want them to or not. At least they’ve now got double fixtures in gameweeks 22 and 24 to help compensate any wary investors too.

Carlos Tevez
A home form that has seen the Argentine striker score just 14 points in his last five gameweeks at Eastlands (breakdown: 1,2,1,8,2) means the idea of Carlos Tevez competing at the top of the poll seems somewhat convoluted – but we all know it’s not that simple. Well, technically it is, but it isn’t really. Manchester City may be one of the least potent home offences (two goals in those last five games at Eastlands) but a solo talent like Tevez will always attract attention. Add a club like Aston Villa- who seem to being through a bit of an identity crisis at the moment- into the fray and the outcome could end up something special. Things might not always turn out that way, but it’s surely not long before the away form gets reciprocated in front of the home ground – perhaps even this week.

Rafael Van Der Vaart
The Dutch midfielder has settled into the Premier League like an absolute dream, while his niggling injuries have been frustrating for Fantasy Managers to contend with (an extra week off due to the weather last week may have actually been a godsend, in a manner of speaking), everything else has been nigh on perfect; particularly when it comes to bringing home the all important fantasy bacon (Mmmm, pigs in blankets – me).

Van Der Vaart has the highest points per game returns of any player in the FPL spectrum, takes penalties, attracts the bonus judges rewards and on top of that is frankly everywhere, cropping up in the right place at the right time to notch goals with consistent regularity. A home game against Newcastle is just another chance for the Tottenham talisman to fizz, bang and whistle this festive period following his 16 point haul at Aston Villa yesterday. Fantasy Managers new favourite toy, and at a comparatively low price to boot.

The rest…
All of the candidates we think that might just be on the periphery of our front three are certainly not lesser lights, in fact they’re some of the most owned and most proficient fantasy selections on offer. The triumvirate of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda will be hoping that Bolton haven’t suddenly mastered the art of the clean sheet after 17 weeks between their last two.

Gareth Bale and his army of well over 50% ownership will be hoping he does what he does best, and offers a reasonable outlet for opportunity while Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas travel to a Wigan known to be able to concede a goal or nine and Nani of course is also very much a regular points scorer these days, even if he’s heading to St. Andrews. We haven’t even got to mentioning the Sunderland strikers up against an always open Blackpool defence. Options aplenty this week.

Head back to the frontpage and place your marker as we make an assault on another gameweek. The poll has to get into a real groove at some point, so let’s go out of 2010 with a bang.

Are you working on your captaining strategy for the DGWs yet?

You think auto-captains are fustrating now. Imagine the swings people will get in double gameweeks if they have a back-up captain on 28 points and their 1st choice cap misses game 1 and comes on for 4 mins at the end of game 2.

A word of caution about Blackpool's DGWs. Remember Holloway changed 10 players when they had a midweek game, against Villa I think it was, then changed them back for the weekend. I don't think anyone other than Adam is a safe bet to maximise DGW potential.

Both those two play all the time apart from that Villa game.

Has anyone else noticed that no matter how well your team is doing week in, week out, you cant help but try and tinker with it??

      My team
      ---------
      Howard (Al-Habsi)
      Ferdinand Coleman Kolarov (Konchesky Bardsley)
      VdV Yaya Malouda Nani Nasri
      Tevez Carroll (Bent)

I keep trying to change little things, always end up making 1 or 2 transfers each week, but i'm never completely happy.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what might help?? (Preferably changes to my team, rather than my mental state...:P)

this is what makes fpl great, not because we love footie, or the stock market...

Re-post from bottom of last page (thanks mihir and shnookie?)

Rooney’s gotta go for Berbatov either this gw or next so that I can afford to swap Nasri and N’zogbia to Gerrard and Adam in gw22. I can either do it now for a hit and do the other 2 in gw22 for free, or do it next gw and cop the hit in gw22. Either way it costs me 4 points so it comes down to who’s gonna do better vs Birmingham, Roon or Berbs?

cheers mate, I'm just worried berbs isn't up for the fight in tough away games whereas rooney loves it. Berbs is definitely the better option overall but I'm thinking if Rooney is gonna outscore him it will be in games like Brum away.

Rooney tends to go too deep in midfield while Berba stays in the box most of the time. Berba will definitely get more chances and will score more goals.

      re-post from last page:

so here’s my team for this week:

      jaaskelainen (foster)
      coleman, baines, onuoha, vidic (bardsley)
      bale, vdv, nani (brunt, etherington)
      torres(c), carroll, tevez

now the question is, do i keep onuoha in instead of brunt/etherington, because sunderland plays blackpool, so keeping a clean sheet and getting 6 pts seems more plausible then brunt/etherington getting 6 pts. and if sunderland are likely go be getting a clean sheet, who do i take out for bardsley. or maybe i have it all wrong and sunderland wont keep a clean sheet, in which that case i should put in brunt/etherington for onuoha or bardsley. i also have a goalie question: jaaskelainen and foster both have difficult fixtures, playing chelsea and man utd. i picked jaaskelainen because of chelseas recent form, but what do you guys think?

Im thinking he wont be though. Lucas and Merieles have been the two standout performers from Liverpool, aside from Reina. I dont think Woy will split them up. This leaves Gerrard either out on the Right with Kuyt behind Torres or the other way round. I would assume (and hope) the latter.

Might be worth mentioning that Rafael was exceptional yesterday (does this show in the stats?). If he can cement his place, he's a must have.

price doesn't matter at this point since plenty in the bank. if fabs finally hits some form i'll probably dump cahill for him when he leaves for the asia cup in a couple of weeks. either thinking bardsley or ferdinand.

simpson of newcastle out this week. but for who? Konchesky or Bardsley? have got gordon in goal, and Kyrgiakos in defence, so would be doubling up.

Right just did Bent to Torres for a 4 point hit. I took Torres out this week but it was for Tevez so cant complain. Torres' fixtures are just too good.

I'm struggling to decide my captain this week,

Tevez, not excellent at home this season but with his new found devotion to the club.

Torres, a very unpredictable Liverpool side could be 2 points or 20 given a shaky Wolves side visiting Anfield.

VDV, excellent in the league this year but not long returned from injury is there a chance of him not getting a full run out this week?

          HELP!!!

Well Nani has his dodgy hip, I'm not so sure Nasri will be as potent with Fabs back, from my own dilemas with VDV and fitness with two games in as many days.... So I guess it's Tevez or Drogba?

i'm doing vdv thinking he'll be subbed off when they're in a comfortable enough position to see out the match w/out him, hopefully after he's already nabbed his pts. for the match.

Whats going to happen with the Fpl cup for this week? After the match today the scores for this week will be updated and we'll find out if we won or not but what about for tomorrow? Will they match up opponents tonight?

Not if they call keep clean sheets.

Both sides are pretty tight outfits, so it's not the worst idea in the world.

It's not foolish - conversely it's very wise given the unpredictability of their attacking forces. However I'd keep an eye out for the weather - anything less than 10 degress and Liverpool's home matches will be postponed.
