A gutsy Villa showing exposes the Chelsea frailties at the Bridge to earn a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Down at the DW Stadium meanwhile, Wigan whimper allowing Newcastle to earn a comfortable 1-0 win as another Gameweek closes…

Chelsea lined up as expected with Jeffrey Bruma given his opportunity alongside skipper John Terry. The only one area of doubt surrounded Carlo Ancelotti’s choice at right-back and he decided to rotate here with Paulo Ferreira coming in for Jose Bosingwa. Elsewhere Ramires continued in midfield with Mikel still sidelined.

Ferreira struggled badly and the decision to remove him with 30 minutes left and introduce Bosingwa was roundly cheered by the Stamford Bridge crowd. Bosingwa would appear to be in the box seat for that role, at least while Branislav Ivanovic is forced to fill in alongside Terry.

Defensively Chelsea still have major problems. After fetching a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Bolton, Chelsea looked vulnerable. Carlo Ancelotti’s rearguard has kept just that one shut-out in their last 8 league matches, a record which won’t increase the confidence of Fantasy Managers looking at their defensive assets.

Ancelotti was quick to acknowledge the defensive frailties after the game…

“Obviously i just want to say that Bruma played very well but we are without Alex and Ivanovic, we lost some energy on the high ball. We conceded the second goal for this reason, the third was different because we needed to have more attention in the box.”

In attacking terms Chelsea did at least find the net three times for the first time since Gameweek 5 back September. That meant more returns for Didier Drogba who has continued to dribble in points of late and maintain his place in many a Fantasy squad. Drogba has now scored or assisted in his last 5 league matches.

Frank Lampard’s return has relieved Drogba of spot-kick duties and it was Lampard who fired home Chelsea’s opener with Florent Malouda drawing the foul for the assist. Lampard has slotted back to a familiar role in the Chelsea engine room and our Members’ OPTA stats suggest that he has already begun to pose a significant goal threat and taken up set-piece duty at corners and free-kicks.

Gerard Houllier reacted to the pressure coming his way by turning to experience against Chelsea. Richard Dunne returned to the back four after impressing in training, shifting Carlos Cuellar to right-back with Eric Lichaj making way. Further forward we saw Emile Heskey return, with Gabby Agbonlahor retaining his place and Marc Albrighton surprisingly dropping to the bench.

Two of Villa’s young hopefuls eventually proved key players on the day however; Albrighton saw action and typically provided the assist for fellow sub Ciaran Clark to nod home the late equalizer. Houlier’s lineup for the home clash with Sunderland will be interesting in regards to Albrighton’s role – it could be that he struggles to break back into the side for several weeks if Agbonlahor shows some form.

Over at the DW Stadium Wigan lined up with Jordi Gomez drafted in to replace the suspended Charles N’Zogbia. Roberto Martinez left the rest of his side intact as Antolin Alcaraz recovered from injury to start.

Martinez described the defeat to Newcastle as “the worst performance of the season” as his side struggled to make an impression on the visitors defence or wrestle any real authority in midfield. Charles N’Zogbia was missed – badly missed.

Wigan travel to the Reebok to face Bolton in midweek – Owen Coyle’s side will be fancying their chances in that one and owners of Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies will surely be holding firm and expecting returns.

Alan Pardew turned to Shola Ameobi to lead his attack in the absence of thigh injury victim Andy Carroll. He pushed Peter Lovenkrands up in support, dropping Wayne Routledge to the bnech and shifting Kevin Nolan to a deeper central midfield role – a significant move for his Fantasy potential.

Ameobi duly delivered a first-half goal to win the game and would seem certain to lead the attack while Carroll remains sidelined. At just 4.2 in the FPL, he could warrant some short-term attention. Carroll could well make a return for Gameweek 23 according to quotes from Alan Pardew in his post-match comments.

Steve Harper returned to the Magpies’ goal in this one and immediately returned a clean sheet – Newcastle’s first in seven league games. Tim Krul is now surely set for bench duty for the remainder of the season with Harper now back on the radar as a 4.3 goalkeeping prospect.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Always a risk capt choice, but he has 2 games and often gets BP, hes on pens, I can see the logic. Torres and Stevie G also risks.....
There is a lot of luck in this game and this weeks capt choice could well be a big demonstration of this!

Well Ferguson doesn't seem to get BPs away, only at home. Adam on the other hand seems to get them quite a lot, plus he's playing twice.

      I think it's a decent move.

    Morning all
First chance of playing around with the Members Beta stuff - is there anywhere I can do a direct comparison a la Football Manager? For example I would like to look at Evatt versus Crainey or other Blackpool defenders etc to see which has the most attacking potential according to OPTA

That was a wild game, City were coming off a europe game 3 days before and had Boyata sent off 5 mins into the game.

They still created chances with 10 men. Koliceny makes Arsenal weaker at the back this time imo, and this City team is in form and top of the table at the moment. Balotelli's back, Milner's benched, Tevez playin well.

The Boyata sending off is a non-argument in my book. It's a line that the United contingent on here pedal out a lot, but it seems to regard the whole result as an anomaly simply because of the sending off. Boyata wasn't randomly dismissed, he was sent off as a direct result of Arsenal creating a chance that they probably would have scored from, so Arsenal would have been ahead within 5 minutes, rather than having a man advantage.

Man City's side in the Europa League was completely different too, I remember Adebayor scoring in that one.

              10 men for 85mins = non argument. Okaaaaaaay. 🙄
Anyway, silly argument this, it's a massive game for both clubs can't wait to watch it. History suggests Arsenal will lost but they are probably the form team in the league at the moment so anything could happen.

But why were they down to 10 men? because we were denied a goal.

Anyway, point was Tevez wouldn't be the best choice of captain with it being a double gameweek and man United playing at home to a side managed by one of Lord
                Ferg's disciples.

Pulis is a horrible little sycophant. It's bad enough the Imperial Lord Ferg pulling those kids out of Preston because his son was (rightly) sacked, but I didn't realise the naked headbutter was so far up the purple Scot's rear end to do the same thing.

Skrtel's your best bet for a guaranteed starter for Liverpool's defence, unless you want to fork out for Johnson - but that seems far too expensive.

You should have starters in Rafael and Coleman, so I wouldn't take a hit to sort out your problems at the back with the wilcard coming up.

If you've got a free then Kyrgiakos to a Blackpool defender isn't the worst move.

      I think Kyrgiakos to Evatt.

Simpson is a nailed on starter and excellent value, wheareas Jyrgiakos looks like a reserve choice for Hodgson.

Should free a bit of cash up for you too, and that's important now that some of the high cost players are offering a bit more value.

what's funny about that? It's liverpool's last trophy chance and Roy might well use his best left back for that game, which has been aurelio. Roy won't want to risk losing heavily against United as he's under a lot of pressure, and may well try keep his best side for then. A humiliation against the old enemy could be troublesome for Roy's job, remember that.

Cahill > Fabs this week or is there something better I could do with my 1 free transfer?

    Hart (Robinson)
    Baines, Rafael, Evatt, Hangeland (Elmohamady)

    Bent, Elmander (Carroll)

Cahill still selected by over 20% of teams I see, with 6339 transfers IN this gameweek. Tim that is.

I know people will wait for deadline swaps but I can't see his price falling as much as I'd hoped it would before he comes back with all the zombie teams holding on to him.

Carr has had two assists in his last four seasons in the premier league.

I know what you mean about Birmingham, but they haven't had a cleanie for a while now and are starting to look like a pretty shabby outfit. Worth giving Kolarov the Wolves game in my opinion.

Hi guys not sure how much LIV and BLP coverage to get in! I have Konch but obviously I doubt he will play both games if either. Have Adam as well. Was thinking of possibly:

    1. Drogba > Torres
    2. VdV/Nasri > Gerrard
    3. Welbeck > DJ/Varney

Any thoughts on any of these. I'm fairly new to this so dont remember how loaded people went

Personally I think the hits make theses a bit too risky, and I won't be bringing in Gerrard or Torres.

Quite like the look of Welbeck to Campbell though, but only if it's for free.

Was for sure going to do either Tevez or Drogba to Torres before I read Camzy`s comments / replies on here.. if he doesn`t think it`s worth it, then it probably ain`t.

Camzy, u really comfortable with having Kyrgiakos as your only Lpool player even tho they have a DGW?

I have 2 freebies, was planning to do:
    Kolarov -> Evatt
    Jarvis -> Adam
    Tevez or Drogba -> Torres

But guess I`ll just do the first 2 and drop Torres and don`t take a hit then..

    Elmander > Varney sound alright??

I have Carroll but wanna keep him coz I think he wont be out too long plus it will cost me more to get him back in.. Elmander has a nice home fixture against Wigan but Varney is obviously more appealing at the moment.. Plan is to take advantage of his upcoming gameweeks, also allows me to get Fabregas in before his double

I'll probly go back to Elmander and Carroll as my forwards as they have treated me fairly well. For the record I've also got drogba
