This season, Ian Holloway’s Blackpool have lit up the Premier League with an attacking approach that has been thoroughly refreshing to watch. In spite of this, only Charlie Adam has come under any serious Fantasy consideration so far, with a tendency to catch the Bonus Judges eye almost every time he takes to the pitch.

A culmination of the recent spell of frozen weather and Blackpool’s lack of undersoil heating means that, currently, Holloway’s side now has an eye-watering three Double Gameweeks (GW22, GW 24 & GW 27) over a period of six game weeks, with their fixtures reading (BIR & LIV, wba, SUN & MUN, WHM, eve, AVL & TOT). With that in mind, it would be remiss of us not to run the rule over couple of other alternatives.

Stephen Crainey
Far and away the most attack-minded of the Seasiders’ back four, Crainey has yet to gain the returns his forages forward have merited. A look at the Members Area stats shows just how much more of a potential advantage he holds over the likes of Ian Evatt, Neal Eardley and Craig Cathcart when it comes to going forward.

Although Blackpool have failed to record a clean sheet at Bloomfield Road so far this season, they have scored in every home game and sooner or later, Crainey’s promise of a decent haul will surely come to fruition. On the road, Holloway’s side have also been far better defensively than many appreciate, chalking up five clean sheets, which is, astonishingly, the same number as Man City and Chelsea combined. That stat alone means Crainey (and Blackpool defensive options) are definitely at least worth consideration.

Cairney comes in at £4.1m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and is owned by 3.8% of managers, though with the Seasiders’ run of fixtures, there’s no doubt his ownership will rise.

Luke Varney
The on-loan Derby man has been overshadowed thus far by Adam, but has scored some cracking goals and shown a consistency of performance that has crept well under the Fantasy radar.

Varney has played a part in all six of Blackpool’s home games and has averaged 5.3 points per game at Blooomfield Road. Indeed, there has only been one home game so far where Varney has failed to either score or assist, as Holloway’s tactics ensure plenty of chances for his forwards.

At just £4.6m, Varney has accumulated 68 FPL points so far, which, in terms of “Value”, makes his fifth-top forward to date. Owned by a mere 2.4% of FPL teams, Varney is certainly showing he has the ability to make his mark at the top level. Such has been his impact, Holloway is keen to make Varney’s stay a permanent one, though there’s no surprise the likes of West Brom are also rumoured to have joined the chase for his signature.

DJ Campbell is also worth a look, though he seems to do better away from home, the polar opposite of Varney. Every one of Campbell’s five league goals this season have came on the road, though he is looking like a man in form right now, with three goals in his last three games.

Hmmm might be worth it. But you need to do the Carroll trade before the Kolarov trade. Then again Carroll might be back for next week so you might want to hang onto him still

Yeah gone off Skrtel. Firstly because he is away in both, rotation due no doubt and him rising .1 is annoying. Had Carroll at the start so would lose heaps. Varney is a one gameweeker I think. Still unsure what to do lol. Speaking of lol, Kolarov is peeing me off..

Well then that leaves me with one sub, assuming Kolarov plays... got to do something. Also thinking of Carroll out for Varney which is necessary to afford Kyrg out for Skrtel. Can bring Carroll back in next week if need be or just carry Varney through the next double if he's going well. Crazy to triple up on BLP?

Damn N'Zog, had to go and get the red... what a waste.

well already have to Evatt so that's done, maybe not the smartest move in hindsight but did it before the Carroll news. Wouldn't mind having Varney, could see him putting up points. Carroll is just sitting there, and I've got no value in him as he's a recent transfer in.

Yup, this is what I think as well. My only concern is that Torres/Gerrard might be subbed in the second half if liverpool have a lead.

Then again, if Liverpool have a lead, Torres and Gerrard probably already grabbed some points.

No Cahill means he's not likely to get as many assists. Everton also have defensive problems. Jagielka isn't fit, and they aren't keeping many clean sheets.

Add on the fact that they don't have a double gameweek in the next 5 and it's quite an easy decision to get rid imo.

1 if any. Also look at getting Carroll out, I don't think he'll be back right away.

      Campbell vs. Varney is tossup.

I went Campbell because of current form and he's playing an old club (Brum), which usually gets players fired up. Varney does have home form though!

keep tevez. bring in someone instead of Chamakh. Varney/welback is a good choice. personally i will favour varney. He has 8 games in 5 weeks

    Short question..

    Play Begovic away to United
    or
Transfer Robinson -> Kingson / Stockdale (4 point hit)

I've got the same problem. Leaning towards keeping Begovic. His fixtures aren't too bad after this week.

Yeah but he won't score more than 2 tomorrow. Even if Kingson only gets 4 or 5 points for 2 matches this GW he'll also have a double in GW24.. just concerned the second Blackpool match mightnt go ahead.

Right, and the GW24 matches aren't great for B'Pool. Maybe Stockdale would work But then, if Rooney doesn't play, maybe Begovic comes away with 3?

      Yeah.

Either him or Drogba, but I think I'll just play it safe this week and go with Adam. Chelsea weren't convincing against Villa.

Good to hear. Ya, was hoping he'd keep quiet for at least a few more weeks. My team looks weird without any Chelsea haha. My Malouda to VDV transfer hasn't exact panned out, but surely it will over time.

Been contemplating whether to get in Kingson or Crainey (more the latter), but can't decide if a hit would pay off.

        Foster
        Konchesky Kolarov Coleman
Nasri Nani Adam (c) Van Der Vaart
        Torres Tevez Campbell
        Subs: Robinson Ferguson Shawcross Jara

I think my team can survive without them...fingers crossed Konch and Kyri (for you) play some part in the DGW!

Think I’ve got no choice but to roll the dice on this one:

    Carroll out for Varney
    Kyrgiakos out for Skrtel

Otherwise, Kyrg likely sits and I’ve no subs. I’ve got no value in Carroll , who only has one good fixture in three (he “might” be back to play) compared to Varney with 6 over the same period. Can’t go Skrtel in for Kyrgaikos without freeing up the Carroll funds.

Only question is whether, I should hold off taking the 4 point hit and wait on Skrtel until next week and pray that Kyrgaikos gets significant time in at least one game this week. … again risk getting burned with one sub and Nani in doubt?

Good point... I plan to wait until the morning. Deadline is usually O-dark thirty here but, this week is good. Other rotations still a risk I imagine.

Here's how I've set my team up for this GW:

    Foster(Robinson)
    Hangeland Rafael Elmo (Toure Jara)
    Nani Malouda Nasri VDV Adam(C)
    Drogba Elmander (Carroll)

Got one free transfer, looking at what to do.. Could get Varney in but that would give me a selection headache and also not keen on getting Carroll out, Elmander has nice fixture.. What are your thoughts? Cheers

Gunner, Am I wrong to think Varney might have a better score over his next 6 in the same period that Carroll has only 3-WHM, sun, TOT, "if" he's actually fit?

Thats exactly the problem, Varney is very appealing right now because of the amount of doubles he has.. I can always get Carroll back in but would lose a lot of value.. elmander would be the man I ditch to get Carroll back in and keep Varney for as long the double GW's go for him

That's basically what I'm thinking at the moment. But, I don't have any built up value in Carroll so not so difficult really. I should of know that getting him in was sure way to insure he'd get injured.

          I'm ditching elmander for varney
Elmander is annoying and done nothing for me since I knee jerked him in after his giant points haul few weeks back
funnily enough it was varney that i shipped out for an elmander 2 pointer vs varney goal that week
but...if you haven't had carroll from the start then ship him out and get him back with this second ludicrous wildcard

Id go for the attacking side, Fabregas and Nasri could be a lethal combo in that gameweek, or if you want someone cheaper maybe Walcott for the double.. Still a few weeks away so we'll see what happens

    Baines to Skrtel
    Carroll to Varney

    Worth a 4 point hit?

Currently have no Liv, and Adam from BLP

My thinking is Carroll assured of 0, Varney likely to pick up minimum of 4 (bar yellow card or injury obviously), good home form suggests better returns. Downside will cost me 0.2 to get Carroll back when fit.

That's the rub but, with three home games follow in the next four with another double coming GW 24 it's more tempting. To me it depends on whether you think Skrtel may be a keeper.

I would only do the Carroll to Varney transfer, since you only lose 0.2

It depends on who from your existing team you play instead of Carroll. If it is an "ordinary" player and would likely get 2 points, then you need 6 points from Varney to break even (at least an assist in one of his two games or 2 BP). If not an "ordinary" player, than Varney might have to score more for you to have a net gain. Of course, you'll have Varney for the other upcoming dgw. On the other hand, if Carroll comes back soon, he might score far more points than Varney even with dgw.

Personally, I try hard to avoid point hits unless I can't field 11 players.

    Hart
    Elmo, Crainy, Raphael, Kolorov (Williamson)

    Tevez, Welbeck (Carroll)

    Strong enough?

Here's my team for this week:

    Gordon (Foster)
Raphael | Konchesky | Simpson (Coleman) (Kolarov)
    Nani | Nasri | VDV | Bale | Adam (c)
    Drogba | Tevez (Carroll)

One free transfer and 0.2 in the bank.

Am keeping Carroll as I fancy his fixtures when he's back.

    Questions:
    1. Should I play Gordon or Foster? thinking Gordon for now
    2. What to do with my free transfer?

Not too keen about bringing in more players for DGW..hmm... Maybe Simpson out for Crainey? (can't afford Evatt)

    Any opinions would be appreciated!
