This season, Ian Holloway’s Blackpool have lit up the Premier League with an attacking approach that has been thoroughly refreshing to watch. In spite of this, only Charlie Adam has come under any serious Fantasy consideration so far, with a tendency to catch the Bonus Judges eye almost every time he takes to the pitch.

A culmination of the recent spell of frozen weather and Blackpool’s lack of undersoil heating means that, currently, Holloway’s side now has an eye-watering three Double Gameweeks (GW22, GW 24 & GW 27) over a period of six game weeks, with their fixtures reading (BIR & LIV, wba, SUN & MUN, WHM, eve, AVL & TOT). With that in mind, it would be remiss of us not to run the rule over couple of other alternatives.

Stephen Crainey
Far and away the most attack-minded of the Seasiders’ back four, Crainey has yet to gain the returns his forages forward have merited. A look at the Members Area stats shows just how much more of a potential advantage he holds over the likes of Ian Evatt, Neal Eardley and Craig Cathcart when it comes to going forward.

Although Blackpool have failed to record a clean sheet at Bloomfield Road so far this season, they have scored in every home game and sooner or later, Crainey’s promise of a decent haul will surely come to fruition. On the road, Holloway’s side have also been far better defensively than many appreciate, chalking up five clean sheets, which is, astonishingly, the same number as Man City and Chelsea combined. That stat alone means Crainey (and Blackpool defensive options) are definitely at least worth consideration.

Cairney comes in at £4.1m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and is owned by 3.8% of managers, though with the Seasiders’ run of fixtures, there’s no doubt his ownership will rise.

Luke Varney
The on-loan Derby man has been overshadowed thus far by Adam, but has scored some cracking goals and shown a consistency of performance that has crept well under the Fantasy radar.

Varney has played a part in all six of Blackpool’s home games and has averaged 5.3 points per game at Blooomfield Road. Indeed, there has only been one home game so far where Varney has failed to either score or assist, as Holloway’s tactics ensure plenty of chances for his forwards.

At just £4.6m, Varney has accumulated 68 FPL points so far, which, in terms of “Value”, makes his fifth-top forward to date. Owned by a mere 2.4% of FPL teams, Varney is certainly showing he has the ability to make his mark at the top level. Such has been his impact, Holloway is keen to make Varney’s stay a permanent one, though there’s no surprise the likes of West Brom are also rumoured to have joined the chase for his signature.

DJ Campbell is also worth a look, though he seems to do better away from home, the polar opposite of Varney. Every one of Campbell’s five league goals this season have came on the road, though he is looking like a man in form right now, with three goals in his last three games.

Sorry re-post since was bottom of last page..

Here’s my team for this week:

    Gordon (Foster)
Raphael | Konchesky | Simpson (Coleman) (Kolarov)
    Nani | Nasri | VDV | Bale | Adam (c)
    Drogba | Tevez (Carroll)

One free transfer and 0.2 in the bank.

Am keeping Carroll as I fancy his fixtures when he’s back.

    Questions:
    1. Should I play Gordon or Foster? thinking Gordon for now
    2. What to do with my free transfer?

Not too keen about bringing in more players for DGW..hmm… Maybe Simpson out for Crainey? (can’t afford Evatt)

    Any opinions would be appreciated!

I'd play Foster and save your transer. Personally, I would bring in anyone for a dwg that I wouldn't have in my team anyway. It just cocks things up afterwards.

I'm not buying in to his, "dont pick gerrard or torres" bandwaggon thats going around. the indpendent article said "might be rested" at some point this month. the month is 4 days old and liverpool will want to start the year on a high with another 6 points. even if one of them is subbed or does not start in one of the games, you still get the value that you would get from any other given player or captain for that matter.

+1 although I reckon it's always been obvious that they will get rested for a game and if folks didn't already realise that they must be stupid. Oh yeah, don't pick VDV he may be rested 😉

If Liverpool lose a game where Gerrard/Torres are rested then it's not good news for Roy. Does he have the stones to pull it off?

I reckon if Liverpool manage a one/two goal lead, they will be coming off

Disagree, don't personally think either Torres or SG represent fair value, on current form but with a DG that changes. If either are then rested for one of the DG games then all changes.

Just had a look at your team... Curious as to why you took a 4pt hit to get in adam and campbell for an away game against City?? Surely one last week and one this week would have been a better approach or have you some masterplan??!

ah, i needed the money from carroll to upgrade ferguson to adam, since carroll was injured and i just got him recently, so the loss was minimal and the decision was made. I Didn't want to be bothered with putting in Blp players after gw 21, and plan to use transfers to maximise the other team's dgws till wild card at gw 27.

      Fair chance of that happening.

Hodgson - "I think we will have to (put Torres on the bench in some games) & have to hope the fans & supporters understand that". "Fernando had a very serious knee injury which seems to be in the past, but when you've had an injury there's always a little risk of recurrence. And Steven, of course is susceptible to muscle injury if he plays too many games one after the other".

Bearing in mind a pretty important game sandwiched in between 'pool's double. Reading that this morning has blown any thoughts of giving the armband to Torres.

      Cue a Torres masterclass . . .

    Foster(Robinson)
    Hangeland Rafael Elmo(Toure Jara)
    Nani Malouda Nasri VDV Adam(C)
    Drogba Elmander(Carroll)

Think I could do without making any transfers. Was considering Carroll to Varney but might hold off on that, could still do Elmander to Varney in a week or so which would give me cash to get Fabs in.. Any thoughts? Cheers

I'd hold onto Schwarzer and swap Foley for Crainey.. Fulham are at home against West Brom so Schwarzer could easily get 6pts whereas, imo, Reina will probably get 5pts out of his two games.. Plus take a look at Wolves upcoming fixtures, they are cronic to say the least.

Also you bought Carroll in GW4 - He is definetly worth keeping.

    Kolarov Dann Konchesky Rafael Samba

Of course he is. He can still easily pull out a big score.

I don't think he'll be rested. In the same way that Capello couldn't drop Rooney in the WC for fear of the backlash that would follow if England lost/failed to score, Hodgson has the same issue on his hands now.

Ive narrowed my free transfer down to 2 options, would love some advise.

    A. Krul > Harper (otherwise playing Gordon)

    B. Foley > 6.0??? Need a defender with good fixtures atleast until GW27. Current defense of Kolarov, Konchesky and Coleman cannot be trusted to play each week.

    Current team: 2.0 to spend

    Gordon (Krul)
    Rio Konchesky Coleman (Kolarov Foley)
    Nani VDV Nasri Adam Maxi
    Drogba Tevez (Carroll)

If you're looking to bring in a player from the Arsenal defence. Fabianski would be an idea. nice & cheap, pretty much nailed on first starter. Rotates well with Begovic.

I noticed Arsenal run after city. Just short of those two, and I think the CBs will be rotated.

    Subs: Enrique, MGP, Kolarov
Correct order? I have Nani and fear it's likely Fergie makes fun of his owners again

Morning here's my team of this GW:

    Jasske (Foster)
    Evatt, Hughes, Rafael (Coleman, Simpson)
    Nani,Bale,VDV,Adam,Nasri
    Torres c, Tevez (Caroll)

Did I get my subs right? Ponder on weather to captain Torres or Adam ? Leaning toward Torres. Please comment on my team.

      Got it right yes.
I'd go Adam over Torres coz Pool plays away, are in poor form and Torres might well be rested for one of their games

Coleman gives exposure to both defensive & attacking points. Just a thought.

Thanks guys, I gave Coleman a consideration but decided to stick with my current Def, Ful at home against WB is more appealing than Eve vs Tot atm. but If nani didn't make the team Coleman will come in as my first sub. I choose Torres over Adams just to balance my chance out , I already have 2 Blk player and don't want to put all faith in them 🙂

Are Nani and Kyrgiakos likely to play this round? And should I bring in any Blackpool and Liverpool defenders? At the moment, I'm only planning on bringing in Adam.

I think he had risen quite abit during the day though. 150 minutes is a long time in FPL. Did you want to buy him?

Bought him in last night. It's a damn good guide, but only a guide.

Annoys me when some start complaining about it - damn, player x was only on 93%, now I cant afford him!

Exactly, it's a guide & very useful for rises especially. Imagine trades in & out weren't shown & no-one knew when the price changes would occur for certain players. We all have the same info to use, some just use it poorly.

Liverpool players like Torres play twice a week when the Europa league is running, so I don't see it as an issue now.

But how many minutes does he actually play? You could stretch that out a bit & say something like 3 games in 10 days.

It's an issue all right. Fairly well documented by Hodgson. His games & playing time will be cherry picked.
