Referred to by some as the “Berlin Wall” the mountain of a defender known as Robert Huth may need a new nickname – one to emphasise his attacking abilities rather than (or at least in addition to) his imposing defensive stature. Huth has emerged as Fantasy gold in the first half of the season – 4 goals, 2 assists, 5 Bonus Points and 4 clean sheets in 21 games, adding up to an impressive 76 FPL points.

Prior to his recent suspension for 5 yellow cards, Huth’s score had climbed to 5th highest amongst all defenders. He’s dropped slightly after sitting out a game and a 1-point performance against Man United, but Huth still ranks as the 9th defender overall and ranks 6th amongst all defenders in terms of value (his current 5.3 price translates into 14.3 FPL points per pound) trailing only to Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Elmohamady and Fulham’s Aaron Hughes and Brede Hangeland.

Stoke have quietly climbed to 10th place after a run that includes 5 wins and 2 draws in their last 10 games. Not surprisingly the Potters’ recent results have been tied to improved defensive performances that bode well for Huth and the rest of Stoke’s defensive players. Needless to say a total of 5 clean sheets on the season is far from impressive, but the more recent statistics show 4 clean sheets in the last 9 games tell a different (and more promising) story. Given the slow start, Stoke will not match last season’s total of 14 shut-outs, but there is every reason to believe that the past two months are more indicative of what we can expect the rest of the way from Tony Pulis’ defence.

There was some sell-off when he hit his suspension, but Huth has seen a deservedly steady flow of “transfers in” over the past two months. He is now owned by 8.5% of FPL teams and has seen his price increase to 5.3. By contrast teammate Ryan Shawcross started the season as the Stoke defender of choice and is still owned by 9.4% despite selling off that has seen his price drop to 4.7. It would be foolish to disregard Shawcross entirely given the price differential hat has developed between them. However, there is no denying that Huth has dominated so far and should continue to be a constant presence in the attacking area on corners, set plays and long throws.

The only reason Huth is not higher up the Watchlist at the moment is a mixed run of fixtures over the next month (BOL, ful, liv, SUN, bir/ars, WBM, whm, NEW). But this schedule provides some prospect for clean sheet returns and Huth’s attacking exploits make him available for Fantasy play even if defensive returns are unlikely. In terms of other considerations, FPL is still not awarding or deducting point for facial hair so that is a non-issue, but Huth does remain the subject of rumors about a potential January transfer. Stoke are saying that they do not need to sell and would seem unlikely to accept a £5m offer that is less than what was paid for Huth in the summer of 2009 but, in any event, a move would likely not hurt Huth’s Fantasy prospects this season even if it did occur.

It's an imperfect system but to avoid collusion and massive swings in price.

I think they need to look at the length of protection though because it is just dumb luck sometimes. Adam missed out on at least 0.3 or 0.4 rise recently and now all those who didn't get him in for the DGW can still WC and get him in cheap, spending that cash elsewhere.

It is similar to the situation when we all had Drogba earlier in the season. He had good fixtures but very poor form, so you wanted to get rid of him but he could of easily hurt you in nice home games, in the end he did f*ck all and we all got rid about a month later than we should of.

I love how people slag off Torres so much on here but he still has 6 goals, in a poor team with poor players around him. Rooney has 2 goals all season, is playing for the team top of the league and has a decent striker alongside him and I don't see anything negative said about him on here that often.

    Am I missing something?!

Indeed, they were passing it around a lot more and Reina wasn't punting it downfield everytime he got the ball also.

One thing that surprised me about Woy at Liverpool, when he was at Fulham they had a nice passing style but at Liverpool he made Rafa's style like watching Barca!

Can Liverpool fans please realise that the reason they are where they are is because of the players they currently have and the previous management (before Hodgson)?

Well I'm not a pool fan and I think Roy was incapable to adapt and use the players he had. Instead he tried to adopt the long ball 442 tactic from Fulham, when he could have easily played 433/451 with Gerrard in the hole. Someone who doesn't realize this doesn't really know anything about football or haven't watched pool play this season.

Thanks for the petty put down last line.

I think i know what i am talking about and I have seen Liverpool play a couple of times this season.

If you knew anything about football then you would realise that Fulham did not play the long ball game under hodgson.442/451 etc has nothing to do with long ball game. i think u are a little confused. Gerrard has been very poor this season and certainly shouldnt be playing in the hole as you say!

Again someone who does not know his ass from his elbow more players at the world cup than any other team in the prem.

More players in the final of the world cup then any other team bar barca.

The Konk, the Rubgy player worst liverpool signings in a while one good singing Raul M played him anywhere but his favoured center midfield role which make me think he did not sign him in the first place.

We have two good footballing defenders Agger and Fabio did not play them because they wanted to play football.

Kuyt out the left lol he has a hard enough time playing out the right.

Not too mention his his hoofing it forward style while at liverpool.

Attacking his players, not standing up for his players, attacking the fans, blaming anybody really but himself.

Trust me I did not see liverpool challenging for the title this year but challenging for the top 4 I did but woy put an end to that with his part in the defeats to .....

blackpool at home, wolves at home(worst away record in all 4 divisions at the time), while getting hammered away to man city, stoke, everton, blackburns half a team with a new manager, newcastle again new manager.

Even managed to get beaten by Northampton at home(third division).

So for you too say the worst manger in 50 years at liverpool had nothing to do with where liverpool lie in the table is fine but to you I say you are talking out of your ass.

(Kenny Dalglish btw has won more trophies then roy has won away games in england with all his 35 years of experience)

Roy is english though and sky sports do love him where you get your information I bet.

Hodgson was never given a chance.

Liverpools players (other than 2 or 3)are not good enough. Look at Benitez's signings and tactics. Is Konchesky any worse than Insua or Josemi? Poulsen any worse than Aquilani (who cost 6 times more)?

I couldnt give a toss about whether the Liverpool manager is English or not.

Of course now Kenny is in charge the only way is up for liverpool!

                    Good luck!

I really can't see how any can seriously defend Hodgson, forgetting his crap signings and playing players out of position, anyone who not only loses. but gets massively outplayed by Stoke, Northampton, Blackpool and Wolves at home within a few months doesn't deserve any more time.

Yes our squad isn't the best, probably only top 8 in the prem with Torres in his current form, but the performances against those teams who have far inferior squads are 100% categorically indefensible

I'mma let you finish, but Graeme Souness is the worst football manager of all time!

Hodgson was never given a chance. If he was left there any longer it would be the possibility of the championship next season far cry from beating united 4-1 just two years ago(alonso and have left I know that but just them really).

Here is one for you the team we sent out against blackburn 8 of them played in the side that beat real madrid 4-0 but sure the team he was left was crap.

Is Konchesky any worse than Insua LOL the konk is one of the worst left backs to ever wear the shirt.

Poulsen any worse than Aquilani yep I am afraid he is a lot worse roy sent Aquilani away to sign the rubgy player you know just when aqua man was just looking like he was coming around to the epl.

Its not just you a few people on here blame Rafa for whats is going on now which is crap last season we were never really out of the hunt for the CL but this season roy tried to turn us into Fulham and drag us into a relegation scrap with his two away wins in two seasons.

So again yes Roy the boy can take a lot of credit for where we are now.

Nice, yeah I'm just concerned with the lack of DGW players I will have. If I got Rooney in for Tevez that week and Alcaraz instead of Djourou this week then I'd have 7, plus DJ on the bench.

Not totally sure who I'd rather have though, Djourou at home to Wigan or Alcaraz double against Arsenal away and Villa at home?

honestly i would say djourou, i cant see wigan keeping a clean sheet in either. I am thinking about brining in djourou in for jara this week.

i have a similar dilema was considering bringin nzogbia this week in but would have to bench dj campbell or vdv or someone..

rooney will be involved if hes fit, where as berba is a rotation risk i think with games that close to each other, he is also on pens.

I'm probably going to bench DJ, I'll have Adam anyway for Blackpool cover for the two games!

The plan is to to Djourou & Fabregas in for G Johnson & Cahill this week and then Rooney & N'Zog for Tevez & Dunn GW24. Would give me the following team for that week..

            Jussi
            Rafael, Djourou, Coleman
            Fabregas, VdV, Nani, Adam, N'Zog
            Torres, Rooney

west ham's last day out was also pretty poor, so i do think nasri could get a good haul. could be a decent gamble to take.

    Fabregas or Lampard... cant decide...

Dont mind rotating them - but Fab v WHM(A) or Lamp v BLA(H) - My gut instincts telling me the latter based on it being a home fixture and Lampards greater goalscoring record...

    What would you do?

Ok but risky leaving out a Chelski player at this moment in time with their fixture list coming up and Gooners busy schedule?
