Referred to by some as the “Berlin Wall” the mountain of a defender known as Robert Huth may need a new nickname – one to emphasise his attacking abilities rather than (or at least in addition to) his imposing defensive stature. Huth has emerged as Fantasy gold in the first half of the season – 4 goals, 2 assists, 5 Bonus Points and 4 clean sheets in 21 games, adding up to an impressive 76 FPL points.

Prior to his recent suspension for 5 yellow cards, Huth’s score had climbed to 5th highest amongst all defenders. He’s dropped slightly after sitting out a game and a 1-point performance against Man United, but Huth still ranks as the 9th defender overall and ranks 6th amongst all defenders in terms of value (his current 5.3 price translates into 14.3 FPL points per pound) trailing only to Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Elmohamady and Fulham’s Aaron Hughes and Brede Hangeland.

Stoke have quietly climbed to 10th place after a run that includes 5 wins and 2 draws in their last 10 games. Not surprisingly the Potters’ recent results have been tied to improved defensive performances that bode well for Huth and the rest of Stoke’s defensive players. Needless to say a total of 5 clean sheets on the season is far from impressive, but the more recent statistics show 4 clean sheets in the last 9 games tell a different (and more promising) story. Given the slow start, Stoke will not match last season’s total of 14 shut-outs, but there is every reason to believe that the past two months are more indicative of what we can expect the rest of the way from Tony Pulis’ defence.

There was some sell-off when he hit his suspension, but Huth has seen a deservedly steady flow of “transfers in” over the past two months. He is now owned by 8.5% of FPL teams and has seen his price increase to 5.3. By contrast teammate Ryan Shawcross started the season as the Stoke defender of choice and is still owned by 9.4% despite selling off that has seen his price drop to 4.7. It would be foolish to disregard Shawcross entirely given the price differential hat has developed between them. However, there is no denying that Huth has dominated so far and should continue to be a constant presence in the attacking area on corners, set plays and long throws.

The only reason Huth is not higher up the Watchlist at the moment is a mixed run of fixtures over the next month (BOL, ful, liv, SUN, bir/ars, WBM, whm, NEW). But this schedule provides some prospect for clean sheet returns and Huth’s attacking exploits make him available for Fantasy play even if defensive returns are unlikely. In terms of other considerations, FPL is still not awarding or deducting point for facial hair so that is a non-issue, but Huth does remain the subject of rumors about a potential January transfer. Stoke are saying that they do not need to sell and would seem unlikely to accept a £5m offer that is less than what was paid for Huth in the summer of 2009 but, in any event, a move would likely not hurt Huth’s Fantasy prospects this season even if it did occur.

I want to take a punt on RVP but as i said below in the games where id really want him (the double gameweek) he could easily sit out one with Barcelona in the middle.

Which left field midfield choice is going to score big over the next 3 or 4 weeks? By "left field" I mean off the radar / unexpected, and not Ryan Giggs (although he's a valid pick of course).

    How about?

    - Dempsey
    - N'Zogbia
    - Walcott
    - Downing
    - Kuyt

Perhaps not. N'Zog has dropped off the radar slightly following his suspension though while Dempsey has been quietly going about his business, but I agree, they aren't the most random picks. Just thinking out loud.

Of those I pick N'Zog but I feel like he's going to be a super hot commodity, second only to Adam in that price range. For off the radar I vote for Arteta. I think he will outscore Nasri over the next few weeks.

Hmmm yes watching Frankie lamps bang in those goals today even against Ipswich has put on a few light bulbs in the head.

Fixtures arent too bad and its hard to include RVP & Fabs for the dgw as there is a massive rotation issue with Barcelona in between both games.

Its tough man, even against City Nasri was threatening and getting into the box, him and Cesc are linking well. Plus there is Chamakh and Bendtner to worry about with RVP. If i get N'zog i could just keep Drogba.

Think i'll stick to the original plan and Get Berba in for the DGW.

Yeah, I won't be getting him anytime soon, in fact I can't see myself getting a Chelsea player for ages.

Their double in GW28 won't go ahead if Birmingham get to the Carling Cup final and after that they have Man City at home and Stoke away in the next three games anyway.. I can't see myself getting Lampard/Drogba/Malouda until GW32.

I'm a proponent of the later wildcard (GW26/27) to get a better picture of new signings/injuries/bans etc...

But I just had the scary thought that all the people playing it in GW 23/24/25 will inevitably raise the prices of all the players people will want for GW 26/27 wildcard teams by at least 0.1 each, some more.

So if you're getting in 8 or 9 new players that amounts to an extra million ish (or more) you'd need to pay for what you could get earlier.

I think I'll only need to make 4 or 5 changes, but for some it could totally scupper their team plans.

Ya with the 2 doubles it actually can work short term

Then again if Lampard didnt do anything in coming weeks it would be too much of a risk.

My other WC is more balanced but dont know if it would score more.

To be honest, i started with a budget defence and my rank only improved once i got some better ones in and had a more balanced team. Having said that, if Cesc & Lamps hit form that team will do very well.

Well its not really a budget defence
Foster, Djourou, Coleman, Rafeal are all very solid picks.

Its means backing Lampard to score more than Brunt/Nzogbia of the next few weeks.

I Really like the above team, This is my other option for next, But i worry by the time DGW for Arsenal comes RVP could be rested for one.
Id play it next week and have torres instead of tevez just for double
        Same keepers
        Hughes instead of crainey.
        N zogbia instead of Lampard
        Torres, RVP, Berba.

Which do you think would do better?

Probably the Lampard one to be fair. There isn't much difference, this one just allows you more flexibility to get expensive strikers in if they hit form. I wouldn't focus too much on the DGW's if your playing your wildcard and just focus on getting a solid, balanced team for the rest of the season. The Lampard team does look good, just a bit of a mare to get rid of the blackpool players once the DGW's are up.

Well adam id keep for the season probably. Not much better value.
Crainey could just be dumped for the likes of jara or Foley.

It may be better team the Lampard one as il obviously cut back on the transfers too which seems a better method for success.

Yup, and if it's not working out you could easily downgrade Lamps to Malouda or Cesc to Nasri to free up funds. Don't see why this team shouldn't do well over the next month at least.

Just because Fabianski gives you a 4.8m "in" to the Arsenal defense doesn't make him a bargain.
      Fabianski 4.8m + Scze & Alm = 79points
      Gordon 4.5m + Mignolet = 95points
      Robinson 4.6m + Bunn = 77points
      Jaask 4.6m + Bogdan = 69points
      Begovic 4.3m + Sorensen = 75points
      Harper 4.3m + Krul = 72 points

So to answer your question.. Djourou.
