Referred to by some as the “Berlin Wall” the mountain of a defender known as Robert Huth may need a new nickname – one to emphasise his attacking abilities rather than (or at least in addition to) his imposing defensive stature. Huth has emerged as Fantasy gold in the first half of the season – 4 goals, 2 assists, 5 Bonus Points and 4 clean sheets in 21 games, adding up to an impressive 76 FPL points.

Prior to his recent suspension for 5 yellow cards, Huth’s score had climbed to 5th highest amongst all defenders. He’s dropped slightly after sitting out a game and a 1-point performance against Man United, but Huth still ranks as the 9th defender overall and ranks 6th amongst all defenders in terms of value (his current 5.3 price translates into 14.3 FPL points per pound) trailing only to Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Elmohamady and Fulham’s Aaron Hughes and Brede Hangeland.

Stoke have quietly climbed to 10th place after a run that includes 5 wins and 2 draws in their last 10 games. Not surprisingly the Potters’ recent results have been tied to improved defensive performances that bode well for Huth and the rest of Stoke’s defensive players. Needless to say a total of 5 clean sheets on the season is far from impressive, but the more recent statistics show 4 clean sheets in the last 9 games tell a different (and more promising) story. Given the slow start, Stoke will not match last season’s total of 14 shut-outs, but there is every reason to believe that the past two months are more indicative of what we can expect the rest of the way from Tony Pulis’ defence.

There was some sell-off when he hit his suspension, but Huth has seen a deservedly steady flow of “transfers in” over the past two months. He is now owned by 8.5% of FPL teams and has seen his price increase to 5.3. By contrast teammate Ryan Shawcross started the season as the Stoke defender of choice and is still owned by 9.4% despite selling off that has seen his price drop to 4.7. It would be foolish to disregard Shawcross entirely given the price differential hat has developed between them. However, there is no denying that Huth has dominated so far and should continue to be a constant presence in the attacking area on corners, set plays and long throws.

The only reason Huth is not higher up the Watchlist at the moment is a mixed run of fixtures over the next month (BOL, ful, liv, SUN, bir/ars, WBM, whm, NEW). But this schedule provides some prospect for clean sheet returns and Huth’s attacking exploits make him available for Fantasy play even if defensive returns are unlikely. In terms of other considerations, FPL is still not awarding or deducting point for facial hair so that is a non-issue, but Huth does remain the subject of rumors about a potential January transfer. Stoke are saying that they do not need to sell and would seem unlikely to accept a £5m offer that is less than what was paid for Huth in the summer of 2009 but, in any event, a move would likely not hurt Huth’s Fantasy prospects this season even if it did occur.

Don't understand the sudden Lampard love.

Chelsea's fixtures aren't easy, and they coincide with a good run for their rivals. Arsenal and ManUtd have better fixtures over the same time period, and their players are better value.

At 12.6 and without double gameweeks, I'd stay away. He's not going to score many away at Bolton and Sunderland.

      Hey Camzy
Im slightly tempted due to the possibility of RVP who I would rather not getting as much game time as i would like due to fixtures and Barcelona in CL between dgw. I can still cover both United and Arsenal if i go for Lampard.

If i did go for him it allows some Chelsea coverage and importantly for me as im far lower than yourself which means i could probably take a risk a differential that could boost me up the ranking quickly with his low ownership and potential for good points.

Ya if i knew RVP would play id go that way. But im very wary of lots of rotation of Arsenals forward line the week they play Barcelona.

In fact Chamackh is very suited to Wolves at home and resting RVP would seem the best policy .

      You don't get it, Camzy?

Everyone is gonna get VDV, Nani, Adam, and Fabs. The fifth spot in their midfield is the one they can't figure out.

With the 'super cheap' defense everyone has, it leaves most with Tevez, Berbatov/RVP, and a Blackpool striker, except for the idiots clinging to Torres' crappy form.

So that fifth spot is the big one. Nasri is probably the best bet, but no one wants that much Arsenal and for some reason people think RVP outscores him. They are looking for an alternative.........

When all of a sudden, here comes Fat Frank scoring big against a Championship side and its like their prayers have been answered!

I'm with you, Camzy: Patience and reason. Between now and week 29, Lampard isn't going to be worth it.

People here seem to get the "everyone thing" wrong here all the time. Everyone here on FFS is going to have similar teams sure, but we are only a small % of the game.

Just look at Bale. He is almost at 60% now but you don't see alot of people here that have him.

You're right on almost all counts.

Every FFS scout player has a midfield of Fabregas, Nani, Van Der Vaart, Adam and one other.

The last slot is the trickiest. Now that Gerrard is out of the equation, that leaves only Nasri and Lampard as heavyweight choices then we drop down to Bale, N'Zog and those cheaper guys.

Striking positions are also limited. Rvp is a massive risk, and he's the only real viable choice as a high-end striker for the coming weeks. The best alternatives after him are Carroll, Rodallega and Odemwingie assuming that Blackpool strikers are putting way too many eggs in that basket.

Well Pantsil has a double gameweek...

I'm not confirmed on that team by any means. I've been planning my WC for GW 24 since GW 20. It's changed about 10 times, and I've been through so many different combinations.

It's probably stupid to get all 3 ManUtd attackers.

The thing is, I don't want to lose Nasri. He's more than proved his worth this season and at that price, he's a fantastic deal. He also has good fixtures, form, and I would lose 0.4 if I sold him.

What in the world makes you think you have to get rid of Nasri? Everything I said about Fat Frank was sarcastic. I think Nasri is the logical fifth choice, and Berbatov/Tevez/blackpool striker upfront.

That's a bit weak in my opinion.

We've saved so much money on defense, we might as well get using it.

I'm thinking my GW 24 WC will probably have quite a lot of money in the bank...

Value has gone up about 0.8m so far, but of course i need those players i don't actually want by the end of the GW (the likes of baines, mummy, bale etc) to rise again so i get anything from them before i transfer them out. will see. Monitoring every day so shouldn't lose any value.

Hey Camzy, what do you think of this w/c team? Pretty standard I know, but would be good to hear yours and others comments etc. Defence is fairly weak, but enables me to have a strong front 3. Alternative would be to drop RVP for Campbell and then upgrade defence with the extra 5m.

    Foster, Stockdale
    Rafael, Coleman, Djourou, Alcaraz, Crainey
    Fabregas, VDV, Nani, Adam, N'Zogbia
    Tevez, Berbatov, RVP
    Bank 0.5m

May do Tevez -> Torres in GW24 if he shows any sign of form in GW23.

That's a better defense than mine.

Stockdale is a poor choice. You don't want to have to make goalkeeper transfers. Get Begovic.

Alcaraz is also far too short-term. What use is he after Wigan's double GW?

Good forwards, but you were always going to get a decent forward line. Watch the bench problem. Who are you going to bench for GW 24? You can only play 7.

Yeah, Stockdale & Alcaraz were mainly for the immediate good fixtures and their double GW. Plan would be to do Stockdale-> Begovic in GW26, and Alcaraz -> Dann/Jara for their double in GW27. Bit of a waste of transfers, but barring injuries I quite like my squad so hopefully won't need to make too many others. Re GW24, i'd probably bench VDV (painful) away to Newc. Mind you, likelihood is that one of my 8 will probably get injured/suspended by GW24, so he may still play

who would you go for in place of Alcaraz? And would you hold back enough cash to do Tevez-> Torres in GW24? If so, I'd only have 4.1m for Alcaraz's replacement given Stockdale -> Begovic would cost 0.4m...

The strikeforce is weak, and with another Blackpool striker, you have too many eggs in that basket. Also, double gameweeks present such a big opportunity that you should be looking to maximize on them.

It's also kind of bad to have money lying around period. I've never had more than 2.0 or so sitting around. I've got a high team value, and I should be using it to my advantage.

I disagree. This year, the pricier players are rarely the better ones. I don't care if money is lying around if I have the best team possible. I don't think Nasri can improved upon. You could go Berbatov for Rooney, but I'm not sure Rooney will score more during the next several weeks, even with his spot guaranteed.

As you said, you have a huge advantage in your team value, but sometimes I feel we are so distracted by pricetag that we forget that form is far more important. (See torres)

Certainly I don't consider the Blackpool striker a long-term bet: Carrol comes back in around 28

For captain, I'd pick Adam. WBA have the worst home record and lost their last five matches.

With VdV, Nani, berba*?, its a toss--up. One side will do well but its hard to say who will. K Davies has become inconsistent in the past month or so.

    Elmander/Chamakh/Varney

Thoughts? Spent wildcard unfortunately, players got injured/asian cup.

fell asleep. if you still read this though, I like the second transfer. several reasons for that. barton is an excellent 8th attacking player (minimum value), he was unlucky not to score double digits vs wigan and the west ham pummeling. wba has got only one single clean sheet so far, and djourou provides an astonishing value should he keep his place.

Foster - Al Habsi doesn't rotate too well.

Shawcross and Bardsley don't have particularly good fixtures coming up either.

Had my birthday already this year, just another day these days. I have plenty of female friends your age if that helps. 😉

I prefer they give us only 1 wildcard. Absolutely, that makes skill more important as we come to cluttered fixtures around Christmas and double gameweeks in Jan.

I was just watching fox sports news and they mentioned redemption for the cricket team if they beat india tonight. Anything to make it more interesting i think. I'm about a 0.2

I hope India beat them. I'd watch the replay in that case. 😉

I care a great deal about this tournament! This is our ultimate competition besides the World Cup, so I'll be trying to watch every match. It's only our second attempt and first time around we went in too cocky, this time I expect a better result (Semi Final or Final).

      It's pretty.

I'd maybe look at Odemwingie instead of Rodallega. That way, you have someone to bench in GW 24, you can play him at home against Blackpool next week, and then you have West Brom coverage for their amazing double in GW 27.

I hate to piss in people's cornflakes but i just realised something... I could be very wrong & hope i am...

Carling cup final takes place the weekend of GW28 (i think)
Assuming this, we can also assume Arsenal will be there since they only face the mighty Ipswitch. Therefore their GW28 fixture with Spurs will likely be postponed. Considering Arsenal & Spurs have a double gw just before this you'd imagine most teams will have 4 or 5 players from these.
Added to that.. if Birmingham make the final then we're even more screwed since Brum also have a double gw a week earlier. They're also set to face Chelsea in GW28 which'd mean no double for Chelsea that week, just United.

I could be completely wrong.. anyone know?

      You're completely right.

      GW 28 could be ruined.

I'm thinking that Arsenal - Spurs will definitely be off. That means that squads with loads of Arsenal will have to be flexible enough to cope without them for a week.

Well that's it then.. i'm defintely playing my wildcard after GW25.. gonna set my team up nicely for GW27, most of the double GW players have nice gw26 fixtures bar Newcastle. That'll leave me 2 freebies to sort out my players who'll be on Carling cup duty for GW28.

        Simples!

Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

I've got to reorganize my defense asap though, so I'm WC'ing next week no matter what.

I'll save a transfer GW 25 then hopefully make one transfer a week until GW 27 looking to have a two frees available for GW 28.

at least, for us cleaver folk (doesnt include camzy cause his rank is rubbish :D), we will know who will be playing in gw28 and who wont. so it should make it a little clearer..

    One additional note to players.

Since GW 28 will likely see Arsenal and Spurs not play, the team who you want to have at least a little investment in for the double GW in 27 is Newcastle. They have Bolton at home GW 28.
