The return of Kenny Dalglish to top flight football was somewhat overshadowed by a couple of flashpoints and Howard Webb decisions that ultimately decided the outcome of the FA Cup Third Round‘s top billing match at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, it was business as usual, with only Leicester’s home draw against Man City coming close to replicating the Cup shocks of the previous day…

Dalglish made five changes from Roy Hodgson’s last Liverpool line-up, with a possible hint to his future thinking. Paul Konchesky- who suffered a dead leg against Blackburn and was unable for selection- and Sotirios Kyrgiakos were both replaced by Fabio Aurelio and Dan Agger respectively in the back four. Up front, Dalglish chose to select Fernando Torres as a lone striker, with Steven Gerrard playing in the hole behind. A 4-2-3-1 formation allowed Raul Meireles to return from injury and operate in his favoured central midfield position.

Gerrard’s straight red card for a needless two-footed challenge on Michael Carrick means he will miss the next three games for Liverpool, including this Wednesday’s trip to Blackpool, the Merseyside derby at Anfield and the first of the club’s double Gameweek 24, away to Wolves. He’ll be back just in time for a run that reads (FUL, STK, che, WIG, whm).

A knock kept Nemanja Vidic out of the Man United team, meaning Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans were the home team’s centre halves. Wayne Rooney was still unavailable, meaning Dimitar Berbatov was again partnered by Javier Hernandez up front. The Bulgarian won a somewhat disputed penalty 30 seconds into the game, allowing Ryan Giggs to score the game’s only goal, to ensure King Kenny’s return was an unhappy one.

Tottenham took to the field against Charlton with, arguably, just three first-teamers on the field (Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jermain Defoe) as Harry Redknapp gave this season’s star performers Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart well-earned rests. Left winger Andros Townsend had a debut to remember, grabbing the opener before Defoe’s double sealed a straightforward victory for the hosts. The match would seem to have little outcome on Tottenham’s next league outing when they host United at the Lane.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien to the bench for the visit of Ipswich, with Ashley Cole missing out completely. Frank Lampard showed the past few months of injury haven’t lessened his hunger for goals, grabbing a double in the holders’ 7-0 rout, as did Daniel Sturridge. The victory will no doubt be morale-boosting for Ancelotti’s side as they look to climb back into the Champions League placings over the next few weeks. It’s Blackburn at the Bridge next for Chelsea and you can expect the likes of Drogba, Malouda and Essien to return for that one.

Man City’s visit to Leicester saw a change of formation for Roberto Mancini’s side, as they lined up 4-4-2 to face old boss Sven Goran Erickson at the Walkers Stadium. Mancini made six changes from the side that drew at Arsenal, with Aleksander Kolarov and Jerome Boateng starting at full-back. James Milner began for the second consecutive game, scoring and assisting in the 2-2 draw. The likes of Patrick Vieira, Jo and Shaun Wright-Phillips got rare outings for the visitors, though the latter lasted only 45 minutes before being hauled off. None of that trio seem likely to make an impression on the teamsheet for City’s next league outing at home to Wolves.

One question in a few different guises... from now until the end of the season, and taking into account the DGW's, who would you rather have... or who will score more points...

    RVP or Berbatov?

You have any opinions on my question, Boom?

I know RVP is a risk, but Arsenal have great games ahead... and more importantly a huge differential...

Berbatov has burned me before this season, so I'm a little reserved about him...

Try to be as objective as possible 😉

imo u should not get rvp before arsenal dg's coz as u said he is a risk n i don't think wenger will play him in every game as well...just see how he does in a couple of weeks n if he does well u can get him in wc ..u need to get a manutd striker in gw24 n if berba not performs u can transfer him out for rvp easily around gw26 or gw27...n why did u invest so much in ur def.?

I dont really think you can plan to have a striker 'season long' as there is over 4 months of the season left and you will rotate due to injuries/form so I think you should thinking about the next 6/8 weeks tops.

Also RVP maybe injury prone but all it takes is 1 free transfer to get Berbatov in for him if he does pick up an injury, its not as if it would take multiple transfers.

Id say go with your gut instinct because either of them could hit a purple patch soon.

Guys please can I have your thoughts on possible WC teams:-

    a, b or c

    a)
    Begovic, Carson
    Coleman, Rafeal, Bardsley, Simpson, Djourou
    VDV, Nani, Fab, Lamps, Adam
    Berb, Carroll, Tevez

    b)
    Begovic, Foster
    Coleman, Rafeal, Bardsley, Simpson, Kolarov
    VDV, Nani, Adam, Fab, Dempsey
    Rooney, Carroll, Tevez

    c)
    Kingson, Carson
    Coleman, Djourou, Bardsley, Simpson, Gohouri
    VDV, Nani, Adam, Fab, Lamps
    Rooney, Carroll, Tevez

B... but get Djourou instead of Kolarov and use the extra 1.2m to get Nasri for Dempsey... however that would require at least 0.2m in the bank...

That would be a great team 🙂

I could afford Nasri with B. Giving me:-

        b)
        Begovic, Foster
        Coleman, Rafeal, Bardsley, Simpson, Kolarov
        VDV, Nani, Adam, Fab, Nasri
        Rooney, Carroll, Tevez

Bascially it comes down to Rooney over Lamps

Thats a nice team, similar to what I will be doing with the WC. You must have pretty high team value? 106m?

Wouldn't go with Kolarov at this stage though, Djourou is a better pick.

really tempted with fabianski/gomes when i wildcard

they cost 10.1 so 0.4 more than foster/gordon and similar to hart and a cheapie

perfect home rotation and with dawson back and wenger signing a centre half should get a fair few clean sheets

the only real porblem would be gwk28 as if arsenal get through to the final of teh carling cup ill have no keeper

Can't see them going 4-4-2 after what happened to Hodgson, but an interesting prospect. I guess we'll know soon enough as they play twice this week. Could be a bit of rotation at Blackpool but they play a home game against Everton at the weekend so they will put out their strongest side for that one.

So I've asked this a couple of times already but it always provides me with food for thought.

HHow many double gameweek players are people intending on taking into gameweek 24? And who? I'm personally heading towards 8 at the moment:

    Vidic
    Nani
    Berbatov
    Adam
    Varney
    Torres
    Konchesky (I know...)
    Dempsey

Are there players out there who people consider to be essential for GW24 desipite not having a double? Personally I feel VDV and Nasri/Fabregas are still important despite only having one fixture. Anyway I'd be intereted to hear how everyone intends to tackle this one.

    good morning.

Just want to pat myself on the back bringing in gerrard and konch over recent weeks for the doubles and run of fixtures. Brilliant moves.
Is there any chance Lpool can get Gerrards red appealed successfully or do i need to get rid post haste? Should i then still hold on to konch for the double gw after this coming gw, or take a hit now and get rid as well?

As I posted on an earlier thread: it all depends on how City choose to deploy him. His strength in the air means that Mancini may put him at the front of a 4-2-3-1, with Tevez dropping back. Although he isn’t the quickest and often looks sluggish, Dzeko’s strength on either foot and ability to make space for himself give Mancini further tactical options.

With 66 goals and 28 assists in 111 Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg, he’s definitely got the quality and potential to take points off Tevez. He was also on penalties and (some) free-kicks for Wolfsburg. Much more than a replacement for Adebayor therefore.

A couple of caveats: many of Dzeko’s opportunities at Wolfsburg were set-up by his fellow Bosnian Zvjezdan Misimovic. Once Misimovic moved to Galatasaray, Dzeko seemed far less comfortable (although 10 goals in 17 appearances this season in a weak Wolfsburg team speaks for itself).

The second warning sign might be that one of the reasons why Steve Maclaren was willing to let Dzeko leave Wolfsburg was his unwillingness to take on defensive responsibilities. If the cautious Mancini thinks the same way, Dzeko’s playing time may be reduced.

While we're mentioning German-based players, I'd avoid central defender Per Mertesacker like the plague if Arsenal were daft enough to sign him (as is being rumoured today). Werder Bremen are great going forward, but have the second-worst defence in the Bundesliga, and Mertesacker is the major cause of this.

Although Mertesacker's fine at international level when surrounded by better players, he's a major liability at club level. Werder have finally seen sense and are getting rid to prevent themselves getting drawn into a relegation fight. Keep well away.

Give me some opinions guys, would you wildcard with this team? I don't really know where it went wrong but I have some serious dead weight I'm carrying and I'm unsure whether it would be better for me to play it now or before the double in gameweek 27.

    Gordon/Jaaskelainen
    Vidic/ACole/Konchesky/Enrique/Kolarov
    Nani/Nasri/Gerrard/Adam/Ethertington
    Drogba/Rodallega/Varney

As you can see I'm carrying some seriously expensive players on low form, a suspended expensive player and a bunch of plain shitty ones.

By definition it's always incredibly hard to assess how good an assistant manager is, as pretty much everything they do is behind the scenes etc... So I don't really know any more than you or anyone else.

But he's highly rated at Stamford Bridge, and presumably played a large part in our defensive record against Mourinho. His departure certainly coincided with a downturn in form, although that was probably down to Scolari!

          I'd say he's a very good appointment.

    What would you do?

I currently sit 15 points ahead of my nearest rival at the top of my league with only 9 players eligible for this week. I wanted to play my wildcard in the last week of its availability to stop my rivals copying my entire team – something which I’ve seen already once or twice this season. With such a small amount of players available, should I take a 4 point hit and have 11 eligable for this week and stick to my original plan of playing the WC in week 27 or play the WC now which may see others copy?

      Don't worry about your opponents.

I'm really starting to think that players who don't put a lot of weight into mini leagues have an advantage in that they just play to score as many points as possible.

You're ahead, so you're calling the shots.

It sounds like a wildcard now is the best thing for your team, so just do it.

If he ends up not playing in the game on Weds, I will cry. And then nerf my team.

He's worth more than that, still only about 25. Was very good in the playoff final too, that gets forgotten, so he can deal with big games.

He's obviously doing an excellent job for Blackpool, but I worry for him if he does move...

Watching the Birmingham game, he basically has the freedom to do whatever he wants in the Blackpool side. When out of possession he pretty much sits down and waits for one of his minions to regain possession. He clearly does a good job for them in an attacking sense - although he's still yet to score from open play - but his (as well as Vaughan) defensive naivety is one of the reasons why Blackpool concede so many.

Basically, I doubt he'd be able to get away with that at one of the 'bigger' sides. He'd be asked to do much more defensively, and I don't know he's be able to cope defensively and athletically - he's a fat bast*rd!

If he was capable of playing off the forward then it would make things easier, but on the evidence of the Birmingham game he isn't. When Holloway moved him further forward, Southern came on Varney, he barely got a kick after that. That decision actually cost Blackpool the game IMO.

He'd probably be better suited moving abroad.

having a play around with potential WC teams

my original side is in my link..

    my potential WC is

    Foster (Al Habsi)
Rafael, Coleman, Hangeland or Djourou, (Bardsley, Foley)
    Fabregas, Nani, Nasri, VDV, Adam
    Tevez Carroll(5mil fwd)

thoughts fellas? Defence looks weak perhaps?

Not bad - similar to mine...

I'm not sure about Bardasley - I have him at the moment and think I'll get rid for my WC... some tough fixtures ahead.

I'd go for DJ Campbell as your sub-5M forward.

Bardsley like Foley, would be purely a playing 'sub'..
