The return of Kenny Dalglish to top flight football was somewhat overshadowed by a couple of flashpoints and Howard Webb decisions that ultimately decided the outcome of the FA Cup Third Round‘s top billing match at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, it was business as usual, with only Leicester’s home draw against Man City coming close to replicating the Cup shocks of the previous day…

Dalglish made five changes from Roy Hodgson’s last Liverpool line-up, with a possible hint to his future thinking. Paul Konchesky- who suffered a dead leg against Blackburn and was unable for selection- and Sotirios Kyrgiakos were both replaced by Fabio Aurelio and Dan Agger respectively in the back four. Up front, Dalglish chose to select Fernando Torres as a lone striker, with Steven Gerrard playing in the hole behind. A 4-2-3-1 formation allowed Raul Meireles to return from injury and operate in his favoured central midfield position.

Gerrard’s straight red card for a needless two-footed challenge on Michael Carrick means he will miss the next three games for Liverpool, including this Wednesday’s trip to Blackpool, the Merseyside derby at Anfield and the first of the club’s double Gameweek 24, away to Wolves. He’ll be back just in time for a run that reads (FUL, STK, che, WIG, whm).

A knock kept Nemanja Vidic out of the Man United team, meaning Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans were the home team’s centre halves. Wayne Rooney was still unavailable, meaning Dimitar Berbatov was again partnered by Javier Hernandez up front. The Bulgarian won a somewhat disputed penalty 30 seconds into the game, allowing Ryan Giggs to score the game’s only goal, to ensure King Kenny’s return was an unhappy one.

Tottenham took to the field against Charlton with, arguably, just three first-teamers on the field (Michael Dawson, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jermain Defoe) as Harry Redknapp gave this season’s star performers Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart well-earned rests. Left winger Andros Townsend had a debut to remember, grabbing the opener before Defoe’s double sealed a straightforward victory for the hosts. The match would seem to have little outcome on Tottenham’s next league outing when they host United at the Lane.

Carlo Ancelotti dropped Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien to the bench for the visit of Ipswich, with Ashley Cole missing out completely. Frank Lampard showed the past few months of injury haven’t lessened his hunger for goals, grabbing a double in the holders’ 7-0 rout, as did Daniel Sturridge. The victory will no doubt be morale-boosting for Ancelotti’s side as they look to climb back into the Champions League placings over the next few weeks. It’s Blackburn at the Bridge next for Chelsea and you can expect the likes of Drogba, Malouda and Essien to return for that one.

Man City’s visit to Leicester saw a change of formation for Roberto Mancini’s side, as they lined up 4-4-2 to face old boss Sven Goran Erickson at the Walkers Stadium. Mancini made six changes from the side that drew at Arsenal, with Aleksander Kolarov and Jerome Boateng starting at full-back. James Milner began for the second consecutive game, scoring and assisting in the 2-2 draw. The likes of Patrick Vieira, Jo and Shaun Wright-Phillips got rare outings for the visitors, though the latter lasted only 45 minutes before being hauled off. None of that trio seem likely to make an impression on the teamsheet for City’s next league outing at home to Wolves.

Afternoon. Been away a few days. Just wondering what the general consensus is on playing WC. GW24 looks tempting, but playing around with my squad, I can get this at the moment with 0 quid to spare:

    Stockdale Begovic
    Rafa Djourou Coleman Carr Simpson
    Lamps Fabs VDV Nani Adam
    Tevez Berbs DJ

    Worth going for it?

      Possible WC next week...

      thoughts?

      Foster - Carson

      Rafeal - Evatt - Huth - Coleman - Elmo

      Adam - VDV - Fabs - Albrighton - Nani

      Van P - Drogba - Berba

Currently unsure about Elmo and albrighton, any better options out there? although these two would probably end up on the bench most weeks....

Sky dont cover the Europa league so Roys achievements in getting Fulham to the final have never been mentioned on that station.

So they hardly love him. If anything there points about him were always misleading based on what rights they had.

Yeah thats who ive currently got in my line-up for his attacking potential but then just had a doubt because of the likely hood of cards flying about in the game, also fulhams defense seems to have picked up.

The only problem with dropping Coleman would be that if he did well then all my rivals have him so I will loose out alot.

            That's what I'm doing.

If Djourou gets dropped, Foster > Fabianski, Djourou > Dann.

            Defense is fairly easy.

Rafael, Coleman, Djourou, Blackpool Defender, Player from team with double GW guaranteed starts (currently Pantsil for me).

For those wildcarders looking at 3.9 defenders - quite often now I see Steven Taylor being mentioned, in a way he isn't a bad pick. He is getting played more regularly and offers some attacking threat from set pieces. However it is only a matter of time before Pardew surely realises that Williamson is a better defender and Taylor is back to being a rotarisk.
Conversely Danny Simpson at 3.9 is as nailed on as you get, carries more chance of assist and a similar likelihood of scoring (ie very low).
If you HAVE to get one Newcastle defender I would suggest Simpson.

I think 3.9 for a Newcastle defender is great value, you've had 6 cleanies this year.

Oh it is, but the problem is predicting the cleanies - not at home to Wigan, Blackpool, Stoke - but away to Arsenal etc... Frustrating. Anyway I'll probably be getting Simpson in.

True, think your going to have a solid end to the season, plus you got cleanies against West Ham & Wigan so maybe the unpredictable days are over.

I do think the whole league will be more predictable from now on, with all the 'big' players back the bigger teams in the league shouldn't drop as many points.

This is not a RM WC post!

    RE: King Kenny

Having only started watching football in the Nineties, I didn't have the privilege to watch King Kenny play and am genuinely curious at his ability.

Would anyone care to share their opinions on my questions below:

    1. What sort of player was he? Any comparison to a player now? His goals look sorta Messi-ish from YouTube with the driving runs and delicate left footed chips over the keeper.

    2. What kind of Manager was he? Did he prefer a certain type of formation?

    3. How much would he cost now on FPL? Hand him the armband every GW?

      1) He was brilliant, I suppose a comparison could be made to a good Wayne Rooney, he was industrious with a nice touch and a good finisher.

      2) Depends who you ask, Liverpool fans think he is the business. However he inherited a great squad there that were streets ahead of their rivals. Blackburn he bought the title when no-one else was spending big. Newcastle inherited a really good side and then gradually ballsed it up bringing about the decline. Signed some good players (Speed, Given) and some true shockers (Maric, Guivarch)

      3) 14m (c) fo'shizz.

Comparing Dalglish to a Utd player is treading dangerous ground. He was similar to Rooney, more lithe, perhaps a bit quicker. A f*cking legendary football player basically.

Since there seems to be a few similar posts goin around now a little help on this choice would go down well

    Team A WC week 24

    Foster, Stockdale,
    Hughes,Djourou,Rafeal,Simpson,Coleman,
    Vdv,Nani,Fabs,N zog,Adam
    Rvp,Torres,Berba

This time more balanced and set up nicely for doubles but there are questions over whether RVP will play in the games i want him to due to CL
It also has no Chelsea coverage. Tevez would replace torres after Dgw

Team B WC This week/Next week
    Begovic,Stockdale,
    Carr,Rafeal,Coleman,Djourou,Simpson
    VDV,Nani,Lampard,Fabregas,Adam,
    Berbatov,Tevez,Campbell.

I like the coverage in this and it means not relying on Torres who seems out of form and fitness.
I can cover Chelsea and the doubles and when second double gameweek comes along Week28 I can perhaps bring in RVP if he is playing and Carroll for Tevez and Campbell

    A or B?

      A for me.

      Although try and get Tevez...

Hughes is also probably the worst Fulham pick. Go with Pantsil to save funds or Hangeland/Baird for attacking potential.

He would have known the fact that he would end up leaving for such things so I'm sure he's made his peace. While it is never ideal to see your best players leave for things like this you just get on with it and hope other players step up, just like Chelsea did last season.

Hart is the number one choice, Toure second but there are cheaper defensive options that have attacking potential. Hart you can play nearly every week so he's the best bet. Kolarov not a sure starter.

Stockdale, Coleman, Elmo all won't hold down regular spots when the other 1st team players come back from Injury/Asia Cup. I mention Coleman because Osman is Moyes's favourite player, he is due back soon as well as Cahill and Rodwell...

Coleman is in the 1st team. There is nobody to come back and he made the team when all were fit. Osman was fit in last 2 games and came on to play

and Coleman has scored 3 in 4.

1.5 months ago, Coleman was benched a lot and didn't hold down his spot. He is on form, BUT he will be rotated when Osman is PROPERLY fit, Cahill comes back and Rodwell gets a spell. Also in the news Moyes's assistant talked up chances of the Russian Right Winger starting more games... Your risk, do if you want.

On the russian he is being talked up because Pienaar is about to leave so its both a boost for his confidence and assuring the fans they have somebody to step in.

On Coleman he has played in 18/19 matches.

The one match he didnt feature when he was rested Everton lost, he then came back into the team and subsequently their form picked

Coleman has also made the team when Cahill, Osman, Rodwell, Saha, Yakubu, Felliani, Arteta, Heitinga, Pienaar, Billy , Anichebe have all been available against the likes of City, West Ham, Spurs, Stoke

So ya you dont know what your talking about im afraid.

he has played 18/21 games this season. He has only stayed on for longer than 65 minutes 12 times. He filled in many times as a RB when Everton had their defensive injury crisis. So it's you my friend that doesn't know what he is speaking about, as someone just said in one of your other posts... Read what I say Im saying Coleman is great, BUT when the squad is fully fit and he loses a bit of form, I can't see him starting a few games...

"He filled in many times as a RB when Everton had their defensive injury crisis"

This is where this debate ends when its obvious you dont know what your talking about.

Coleman has played Right wing all year. Again the squad has been fully fit before,
So your basing your judgement on him "losing form"....which is just speculative at best and grounded in nothing.

I know he is a rightback.
Im from ireland ive known about him for about 18months.

He previously played RB for Blackpool last year but this year he has be used on the right wing.

So tell when did he play right back?

A quick check of the stats backs my orginal point up, Phil Nev and Hibbert havent been out together and Coleman has played Right wing.
Ive got him in early and he has been playing right wing.

                    So stop talking nonsense .

Leighton Baines was in this situation a couple of years ago, and look at him now. Moyes gave Coleman the chance, and now he's taken it.

Why would he be rotated if he's playing well and scoring goals? makes no sense.

          Bookmarked!

Coleman is first choice right mid at the moment. Only his performances are keeping him in the first team. We're all waiting for the bubble to burst no matter how 'glass half empty' that sounds.

Coleman is great if you have him, I don't know if I'd transfer him in though. Hangeland at similar value would be my pick given the favourable DGW and longevity.

    Alreet lads.

Everyone else has posted their wild card musings on here, so I thought that I might as well have a go too. Its slightly different to the norm (at least in defence and up front, so I'd by very interested in hearing your comments.

    Hart (Kingson)
    Rafael/ Toure/ Dawson/ Djouru (Simpson)
    Fab/ Nani/ VDV/ Nasri/ Adam
    Drogba/ Carrol (Odemthingy)

I am looking to play it for GK26 or GW27. Hopefully Drogba will be back in form by then. I have another team in almost the same position (around 20,000) and have already WC on that one. It will be an interesting experiment to see which one does better out of it!

Kingson -> Al'Habsi (Kingson short term option, Al'Habsi has a nice double in 24 as well).

Not sure about the City double up with Hart/Toure - I'd consider Hangeland/Skrtel

      I like your midfield.

I don't like that you are using 4 defenders, none of which are significant attacking threats (Rafael a bit, but he isn't getting any assists at the moment). Get Coleman for Toure.

You're not taking advantage of the value available in midfield so are having to play two low value strikers. If I were you I'd make a big name out of one of Adam/Carroll/Odemwingie so that you are only trying to rotate 1 of 2 with 3 defenders rather than 1 of 3 with 4 defenders.

Cheers for that. Your probably right about al'habsi.

I would only be choosing the best 3 defenders for each game most of the time. Carrol would pretty much start every game. That means I would be usually be just rotating adam and odemthingy.

Pretty close to mine. I want two of these post WC and am thinking Adam and Nzog, although will be going Adam and Brunt for the GW27 for their doubles then probably swapping Brunt for NZog. Thanks.

Brunt would be higher but West Brom's form is terrible at the moment. Maybe they'll be better by GW 27, but maybe not.

        Really?

        I'd say:

        MGP
        Etherington
        Yaya
        Adam
        Nolan
        N'Zog
        Brunt

Is that from worst to best?

To me, there are three tiers.

          N'Zog, Adam
          ------
          Nolan, Brunt
          ------
          Yaya, Etherington, MGP

The players in each tier are about the same in terms of points potential and fixtures make one better than another.

You have to have Fabregas if he's fit and playing well. He gets bonus points like no other, and Arsenal are likely to score the most goals over the next few weeks.

Any WC team without Fabregas is a poor one imo.
