We’re still waiting for the “Dalglish factor” to kick-in as Kenny fails to inspire a recovery in Liverpool’s fortunes; the Reds the latest to suffer defeat at the hands of Ian Holloway’s Blackpool in last night’s Bloomfield Road encounter. In the Carling Cup meanwhile, Wenger shuffles his pack and watches on while Ipswich expose defensive flaws to take a 1-0 lead into the Emirates second-leg…

Dalglish sprung a few surprises with his lineup. In the absence of suspended skipper Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool boss brought in Christian Poulsen and Milan Jovanovic to the midfield, while Glen Johnson returned after the birth of his baby boy. None of the trio made an impression and their places look far from secure ahead of the Merseyside derby with Everton at the weekend. Maxi Rodriguez and Paul Konchesky were left on the bench along with David Ngog as Dalglish again went with Fernando Torres as the lone striker.

Johnson took up an unfamiliar left—back role with Dalglish opting to keep faith in young Martin Kelly at right-back after his showing in the narrow defeat to United on Sunday. Kelly duly rewarded that decision by providing the assist for Torres’ opener within three minutes. At 4.2 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Kelly has emerged as a very decent short-term consideration. He would seem likely to hold his start for the Everton game and could cement this role for Liverpool’s run of three home matches in the next four (EVE wol FUL STK).

While Kelly has potential, Liverpool’s defensive frailty remains a big problem. Gary Taylor-Fletcher navigated past Dan Agger too easily for Blackpool’s equaliser, while Ian Evatt demonstrated Liverpool’s lack of aerial power by providing the assist for an unmarked DJ Campbell to head the second-half winner.

Torres’ early strike gave him his seventh goal of the season and just his second in nine games. Dalglish went into this game promising to get the best from the Spaniard and, with those three Anfield encounters to come, there’s every chance that we will see the Torres goal ratio improve in the coming Gameweeks. With Gerrard absence through suspension for the next two however, Torres would be a gamble given his price, even with the double fixture in Gameweek 24.

DJ Campbell’s goal was his second of the Gameweek and his seventh of the season. Campbell has now scored 5 in 5 games, providing outstanding value for his 4.6 price tag. With his place seemingly secure in Ian Holloway’s lineup, he remains a good option for Blackpool’s continued run of home matches and the two additional double fixtures to come in Gameweeks 24 and 27. The Seasiders have 5 home matches in the next 7.

Charlie Adam remains the jewel in Holloway’s crown however. Predictably, the Scot came out of this match with another maximum 3 point Bonus haul, giving him a total of 5 over the two Gameweek fixtures. Adam has now amassed a staggering 30 Bonus Points over the season – his nearest rival, Carlos Tevez, is back on 23.

Incredibly Adam has scored Bonus in 6 of his last 8 starts, totaling 17 points in that run. He has not scored a single goal and returned just 1 assist in the 8 game spell, emphasising that Adam’s influence is so strong, he doesn’t need conventional Fantasy returns to catch the eye and earn the supplementary Bonus Points. The only potential caveat to holding Adam over the next month is his future at Bloomfield Road. The Blackpool skipper continues to be linked with other clubs, with Liverpool now amongst those coveting his services.

Arsenal’s Carling Cup defeat came as a surprise, even if the weekend struggle against Championship Leeds hinted that the Gunners would face a task at Portman Road. Arsene Wenger’s side failed to raise their game and dispatch of the Tractor Boys, slipping to a 1-0 defeat that will likely force Wenger to field an even stronger starting XI for the second-leg in a fortnight.

Last night’s lineup saw the likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Andrey Arshavin, Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott earn starts as Wenger chose to rest Samir Nasri, Robin Van Persie, Tomas Rosicky and Gael Clichy. Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere provided stability in central midfield, while Denilson came in for Alex Song in the holding role.

We can expect a full reshuffle for the weekend trip to Upton Park with Nasri, Van Persie, Clichy and Song all looking certain starters. Walcott and Arshavin’s starts look less secure and it seems likely that the two will rotate for the second half of the season, with Nasri swapping flanks accordingly. Up front the competition looks fierce, particularly if Wenger opts for a lone striker as expected. Bendtner failed to take his opportunity last night and remains below Van Persie and Marouane Chamakh in the pecking order.

Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny started in tandem at the back once again, with Sebastien Squillaci sidelined with a hamstring injury. That pairing look to be first choice, with Djourou providing potential with his 4.2 price tag. Wenger is in the market for a new centre-back however after Thomas Vermaelen’s recent setback in his recovery from a Achilles injury. Djourou’s potential could well be short-lived then, particularly given last night’s defensive showing.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      aaah, boring Thursdays.....

      Dear sir/madam,

I am in my mid twenties, and have holidayed in Cyrus every couple of years with many friends and my family since i was ten years old. However, my family and I have all now agreed that we will not b...e returning until the illegal slaughter of millions of songbirds that we feed each year is stopped in your country, by some sort of licensing system, or some such means.

You are now going to be missing out on many thousands in tourist/tax revenues for your country, as 28 people sofar we know have agreed not to go to Cyprus on holidays again until action is taken ( We would estimate over the years, acquaintances and friends, and family have spent upwards of a quarter million in your country- a conservative estimate).

We will soon be starting a facebook page to increase awareness of this issue. I suggest you forward these concerns on to your relevant minister- we wont be back anyway until something is done about this unfair, and irresponsible barbarism.

(i include a relative link below)

      Yours sincerely,
      **

Perhaps you could also have success by finding restaurants serving this ambelopoulia dish and start some monkey wrenchin there.

Smear your naked body with fake blood, dress up as a songbird and have a friend toss a net over you and beat you with a club in front of the restaurants. Just an idea.

The rules say that there are two wildcards, one that can be played at any point and one that must be played between weeks 22 and 27. So if you play one now it will count as your midseason wildcard and you'll still have the other one to play (assuming you haven't already used it).

Maybe, but Chelsea were on fire anyway. I think they were missing Essien too, for the African Nations cup.

and I believe it was Malouda and Anelka who stepped up.

Funny to think that they could miss one of their best players and do that well, where this time they've suffered massively from "lack of depth" If Liverpool are without Torres and Gerrard, they look distinctly 3rd rate on paper, chelsea would still look pretty strong without Lampard and Drogba.

Ha, well I've been considering them both. The one thing that puts me off Rip Van Pinkle is the sheer amount of football Arsenal have to play over the next couple of weeks, he'll surely be rested for some of it.

So am I, especially as it frees up that extra little bit of money from Tevez. But not until I do my wildcard. When are you planning using yours or have you already done so?

If things go smoothly, at the very last moment.
I've haven't had Tevez at all this season.
I think he is a hindrance to his owners.
Checking through loads of teams sooo many capt. him when he does sweet FA and dont when he hits. Yes he's got points but not when you expect etc....

True enough regarding Tevez, apart from one poxy swine in my minileague who hasnt touched it in ages and left the (c) on him. He has occasional mad jumps up the table before settling back into the mud of mediocrity where he belongs.
I'm taking a big punt and giving VdV the (c) this gameweek, time to gamble!

Oh Lord don't remind me! I profited early from Chelsea's good form, then with the wildcard I had the perfect storm of VdV, Nani and a couple of others all getting injuries or knocks at the same time. Bleurgh.
The next wildcard I will [like yourself] play late. I'm planning on trying not to get too caught up in all the DGW and TGW madness and instead pick the strongest side for the rest of the season.

Hi, I posted this yesterday afternoon and it was at the bottom of a page, so not to many people would of seen it, it is my take on the players from the West Ham Vs Birmingham game, just a little early scouting for the possible treble GW, thought you might like my opinions from being at the game.

Seb Larsson – He had the running on Matthew Upson all game, and was a lil maestro on the set pieces. Whenever he is on the pitch he will hog them for sure. Murphy (The left back that replaced Dann,) took one while he was on, so if Dann is out for a long time then he is one to watch, poor free kick mind. And some other player took one after Larsson went of, also poor. So he will hog set pieces. He is in my team for the Treble GW for sure.

Ben Foster – Ignore the fact he got done over by a brilliant finish from Carlton Cole, and he had a decent game, once again. He is a cracking goalie. Couldn’t do nothing for the first one. And the only time Birmingham really looked like scoring to me was from a set piece. Or…..

Alexander Hleb – Plays with his socks down and cuffs of his shirt over his hands, srawny lil rat. But looked a threat when running at us, and was instrumental in there play. He and Larsson seemed to be the only ones with ideas. (Larsson more than Hleb). And anything good came through them two.

Nikola Zigic – Jerome did sweet FA last night, and had Zigic been playing the entire game, it would of been a different scoreline for sure. Ok, he played against Winston Reid and James Tomkins (Who didn’t deserve MOTM, Reid deserved it). But he looked a HUGE threat for the small amount of time he was on the pitch. If he begins to get a regular starting place, definitely one to watch.

And as for West Ham. Obinna is our main threat and shoots on site. I personally will refuse to get Piquionne in my team now (Worst player in the prem). but he will get points annoyingly, as will C.Cole. If Faubert was listed as a Defender he would be worth getting in if/when we get some nice fixtures. Don’t bother with the rest.

Nah, I think it has relevance. Both teams would logically put 100% in, West Ham because they actually have a chance at a trophy, and Birmingham because they're pretty much mid-table, and "safe" from relegation. (they're not, but enough to warrant fielding a 1st 11)

Really? We both played full strength teams, also we play Brum again GW26, so possible ideas on that front. Or are you talking in general the Carling Cup? Means a lot to our fans, not as much as the FA Cup but I know all 4 teams in the semis would love to win it.

Carson - could be dropped. Needs off-loading either way.

Konchesky - unlikely to play again barring major injuries.

Kolarov - short term drop risk, long term rotation risk.

Adam - might move in the transfer window? Injury problems last night - doubt for saturday?

Carroll - Injury risk for the weekend.

Drogba - might be dropped for saturday.

They're a funny one, Arsenal. They play the same way regardless of opposition. Teams from lower leagues usually find themselves in the lower league because they concede goals to average opposition and make the odd defensive blunder. Wenger and Arsenal do not take advantage of this, they rarely play a more direct, physical type of football.

I think Wenger tried last night by starting Bendtner, but Arsenal didn't change their style of play - Chamakh, Van Persie or even Arshavin might have well been playing the target man.

When you consider Chelsea scored 7 past Ipswich only a few days earlier, then it highlights how you need to have a different way of attacking. If only as an option for 10-20 minutes.

Re. Carroll, he's back in training thats as much as anyone knows. I imagine they will keep it quiet as it's the derby and would want to disrupt Sunderland's team plan as much as possible. Would I (c) him - no, would I start him - maybe.
