[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles
20 January 2011 516 comments

Sitting just one point above the relegation zone, Mark Hughes’ Fulham can ill-afford to relax going into their upcoming double Gameweek, as the battle for survival begins to hot up. The Cottagers have suffered considerably from a lack of goals this season since Bobby Zamora’s leg-break back in game week 4 and with Mark Schwarzer currently starring for Australia in the Asian Cup, Sparky will need big performances from the rest of his squad to make any investment worthwhile for Fantasy Managers this upcoming week.

The Opponents

Stoke travel to Craven Cottage with three wins, three losses and three clean sheets from their last six games. Tony Pulis’ side sit eighth in the table, only four points behind Sunderland and with a game in hand, indication of their ability to handle life in the top division as the seasons go by. They have actually won more games on the road than Man United, with three victories, though have tasted defeat six times on their travels.

Fulham then travel to Anfield, where Kenny Dalglish will be looking for a first win in front of the Kop since his return, following last weekend’s Merseyside derby draw with Everton. With one win on the road all season, Fulham will be up against it, particularly if Liverpool replicate their first-half performance against David Moyes’ team. Liverpool have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six games, though, suggesting the visitors could well find the net, at least.

Current Form

Since Zamora’s game week 4 injury, Fulham have only scored more than one goal in a game three times, but, encouragingly, two of those occasions have come in their last four matches. Aside from a narrow 1-0 defeat at Spurs, their form in those last four games has been positive, with two wins and a draw -plus two clean sheets- earning vital points as the likes of Wolves and West Ham start chalking up the points around them.

Rotation Risk

In a squad beset by injuries and enforced international absences, Fulham’s first-team options have been severely stretched this season and there’s resultantly been little chance for variation or rotation in team line-ups. Zoltan Gera seems to flit in and out the side and Carlos Salcido now seems to have lost his left-back berth to Chris Baird.

Moussa Dembele played 32 minutes last game week, his first involvement since game week 13. Injuries have limited the game time of Andy Johnson and Diomansy Kamara up front, leaving Clint Dempsey as an out-of-position favourite with Fantasy Bosses.

Potential Targets

Fulham are really struggling to score but at the back, they’re performing well, with the second-best defence on the road this season, conceding just eleven goals. They’ve averaged a goal per game so far and with that in mind, two goals seems the likeliest outcome for Hughes’ side. Who will grab the goals, though?

David Stockdale
The man between the sticks until Schwarzer’s return, Stockdale should see plenty involvement over the two games. Tim Howard made nine saves at Anfield last Sunday, with Fernando Torres’ six goal attempts a possible hint at his return to form. With two clean sheets in their last three home games, though, Stockdale will need to be in good form to improve that record for the game with Stoke.

Predicted Return: 1 clean sheet, 9 saves

Brede Hangeland
Has found the net three times already this season, making him the club’s second-top scorer. However, he seems to only be awarded bonus when he scores, with only one game being the exception to this rule. The other members of the back four- Aaron Hughes, Chris Baird and John Pantsil- are around £1m or so cheaper, but Hangeland looks like the best bet for anything over and above any clean sheet returns.

Predicted Return: 1 Clean Sheet

Clint Dempsey
The main man this season for Fulham, Dempsey’s versatility has seen him fielded up front as the injuries rack up around him. Fantasy-wise, he’s a steady points-gatherer who doesn’t quite get the attention his value seems to deserve (he’s only six points behind Samir Nasri, for example) and with a goal, an assist and four Bonus Points in the last two game weeks, he’s the man in form for Fulham as the doubler approaches.

Predicted Return: 1 goal, 2 Bonus Points, 1 Clean Sheet

Simon Davies & Damien Duff
Three assists in his last two home games bodes well for Davies and sharing corner kick duties with Duff only adds to his chances of grabbing yet another. Duff is only second to Dempsey in Fulham Goal Attempts over the last three game weeks and with the likes of Dempsey sniffing around the penalty box, a rebound from Begovic or Reina could see Duff bag the assist his play of late deserves.

Predicted Return: 1 assist, 1 Clean Sheet apiece.

Moussa Dembele.
Bit of a long shot this, but a win against Stoke may well prove to be critical to their chances of survival and Hughes could well pin his hopes on starting the Belgian. It may well be Andy Johnson or Diomansy Kamara that starts alongside Dempsey, though, depending on who manages to make it out the treatment room. With so much uncertainty around the levels of fitness of Fulham’s forwards, a punt seems unadvisable.

Predicted Return: 1 goal, 1 Bonus Point.

I'm of the opinion that Liverpool has poor defence. Sure the cleanies are bout even, but Arsenal have 3 recent clean sheets and Liverpool haven't had one since early Dec.

Considering swapping Bale for Dempsey myself to make an 8 pointer. Really unsure about it, the only reason I would is that Nasri might not play after playing last night.

It would any other time, but with the wildcard avilable it would help it 3 Gameweek's max. I would wildcard this week but that would mean still having the likes of Skrtel and Torres in my WC team, and with their current form I do not want that.

I'm planning to field 10 players that week as I'll have 4 outfield players missing (2 Arsenal, Spurs and Birmingham).

And I reckon that's fine... pretty much everyone will be in the same boat that week and I expect most teams to only be able to field 9/10.

I just think it's important to have 5th defenders etc that have a good game that week to at least give you a chance... Stoke, Villa or Wolves perhaps.

Oh, and Man U and Chelsea are on a double so it's not too bad 🙂

Oh yeah I forgot Spurs too. Arsenal/Bham better lose this Semi Final now or some unsuspecting people will end up without Bale, VDV, Fabregas, Djourou, RVP, Hutton, Foster, Ferguson and Carr.

Chelsea lose their double if Birmingham are in the final too, leaving everyone piling in on Man U.

    Harper (Foster)
Baird | Vidic | Coleman (Djourou, Kolarov)
    Adam | Dempsey | Nasri | Nani(c) (VDV)
    Torres | Bent | Campbell

As much as it pained me to sell Tevez, I'm hoping the next three Liverpool games (two at home) Torres will outscore Tevez's two away games... then bring Carlos back in for Bent.

What do we reckon? Enough Man U coverage?

You come to same conclusion as me about keeper to best rotate with Foster. I'm not a massive Harper fan but every mock wildcard I've done he fits best with Foster from GW27 on.

If you must sell Tevez for Torres (ballsy move) I'd be wanting to get Tevez back after this DGW.

Not bad at all, though Torres (c) is risky. I think I'm going with

      Al-Habsi
      Skrtel, Crainey, Walker
      Nani (c), Adam, VdV, Nasri
      Tevez, Torres, Berbatov

      Jaask, Bale, Knight, Rafael.

      Which is certainly ho-hum.

Adam and Hangeland or Dempsey and a L-T 4.4 defender (probably bring Djourou off bench to play with Coleman and Kelly), alternative is bring Evatt in as the defender, but I'm not overly convinced about that one.

    Gordon (Carson)
    Evatt Djourou Kolarov (Rafael Konchesky)

    RvP Tevez Berbatov

Can`t decide who to bench this week...Has to be VdV or Nasri..?

I'm benching VDV... my logic being that even though he can score against anyone away, Newcastle have screwed me over so many times this season - trying to predict what they'll be like one week from the next is impossible. They may well hold or even beat Spurs.

Plus, Nasri's at home to Wigan!

Nasri played over 80 mins last night. So he's favourite to be rested or subbed early at the weekend. VDV is on free kicks as well as his normal goal threats in open play.

"Carling sent two former Manchester United greats, UEFA Champions League winning defender David May and fan favourite, midfielder Clayton Blackmore to a lucky fan’s house in Manchester!"

That would be David May who played 0 minutes of the Champion's League in 98-99 and sat on the bench for the final 😀

Doh, just posted this on the previous article.

Ignoring the Birmingham game for a minute as I can’t see that being more than a 2-0 win to United, what side you think Fergie will field away to Blackpool?

I’m stuggling to see who he’ll play as RM. Surely Giggs won’t play 2 games in a week. Could he play a 4-3-3 with Berbatov up top and Rooney and Nani supporting?

I think you've nailed it there. I suppose Nani could switch to the left and Fletcher play the right flank which is what I was thinking earlier, but I reckon a midfield 3 of Fletcher, Carrick and Anderson or Giggs is what SAF will go with.

Worrying for Rooney owners perhaps. I wouldn't be surprised if Fletcher or Anderson get goals arriving from midfield to support Berbatov.

Afternoon lads. My current forward line in Torres, Carroll and Tevez. What do you reckon about doing Carroll & Tevez > Bent & Berbatov? I have 2 freebies so no points hit involved. My logic is that this way i'll (likely) have my strikers playing 6 games this GW comapred to 3 if i don't make the transfers. Plan is to get Tevez back when i WC (probably GW 26)

I'm keeping Tevez. And have been tinkering at seeing if I could enough dough to possibly think about Carroll->RvP, but probably won't anyway. With Newcastle GW27 double and needing to put one Fwd/Mid on the bench anyway - probably no point. So maybe the argument (for you) might be Torres->Rooner/RvP/Berba

I would still leave me with my strikers play a combined 3 games between them (only 2 if i got RVP) as opposed to 6 games if i make the move. I think that might be too good to ignore. Maybe i'm putting too much faith in double gameweeks?

I would say depends how much you will lose on him, i wanted to do the same, but i would lose 0.5

I would lose a small fortune on Carroll and Tevez but i'm still keen!

Would anyone bench Berbatov (off form?) in favour of Dempsey?
