Aston Villa had a torrid end to 2010 by first losing manager Martin O’Neil, amid claims of a disagreement over a lack of financial ambition from Randy Lerner, and then slumping towards the lowly depths of the Premier League relegation zone. It must have been a demotivating time for Villa fans with an owner who seemed to have just small-scale goals.

This was all until a few days ago when Lerner and new Manager Gerard Houllier slapped a huge £24 million on the table in a move for proven Premier League goalscorer Darren Bent. With further transfers reportedly on the cards, things could be looking up for Villa. This double Gameweek could be just the right opportunity to get their season back on track and for Fantasy Managers to suddenly take notice once again.

The Opponents

Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City are the first of Houllier’s opponents. City who are currently sitting in second in the Premier League, bring their decent away record (W6 D3 L2), fantastic current form of 4 wins in their last 5 Premier League outings and, of course, their wealth of attacking talents including new striker Edin Dzeko. They also have the best defensive record away from home this season, conceding just 9 goals on their travels.

The second helping of Villa’s double Gameweek will be a crunch clash away at Wigan. The Lactics currently sit exactly on par with Villa, both teams have 22 points in the Premier League and have a goal difference of -15. Wigan have scored just 11 goals in 12 home fixtures so far this season and coupled with the fact Villa have managed just 9 goals on the road, the statistics certainly point to a low-scoring relegation scrap then.

Current Form

Villa are truly in shocking form at the moment and have managed to pick up just 2 points out of a possible 15 in their last 5 games whilst conceding 11 goals in the process. This has been the story of their season so far – the combination of defensive frailties and misfiring forwards has led to them net just 24 goals, while 39 have flown in at the other end. But with the introduction of Darren Bent and the Chairman’s obvious drive and willingness to splash the cash, Villa’s season could be on the verge of a dramatic u-turn.

Rotation Risk

Villa possess a wealth of options in midfield and apart from Stewart Downing, Stiliyan Petrov and Ashley Young, who are likely to feature in both fixtures, any of Marc Albrighton, Nigel Reo-Coker and Barry Bannan could alternate and earn starts. Although currently out of favour, Houllier can also call upon Robert Pires, Stephen Ireland and Jonathan Hogg, if need be.

In attack it would seem that new boy Darren Bent is set to start both matches and if Houllier packs the midfield with five players, with Ashley Young playing in the hole, then Gabriel Agbonlahor might have to settle for a bench role with Emile Heskey suspended and John Carew farmed out to Stoke on loan. Heskey will however be available for the trip to Wigan.

Potential Targets

Neither of Villa’s fixtures look likely to bring them big returns. Villa have the chance of defensive points at Wigan but look likely to concede to City at Villa Park. Equally goals look likely to be a premium in both fixtures, but we’re tipping a couple of strikes across the two games, with perhaps a defeat and a draw coming Villa’s way.

Darren Bent
The spotlight is firmly on Bent and it’ll be very interesting to see how his career at Villa Park starts out. After transferring to Sunderland, around 18 months ago, he couldn’t have asked for a better initiation into life in the North East as he scored 4 goals in his first 5 games. Villa fans will be hopeful that Bent can find this kind of form once more. So far this season Bent has hit the back of the net 8 times and notched up 79 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points – reasonable but disappointing given the heights of his 24-goals last season.
Predicted return: 1 goal

Marc Albrighton
Although the youngster may not start both of the double Gameweek fixtures, he will surely play some part in each of them and priced at just £4.6 million, he could be worth the risk. He has certainly proved his potential this season and lived up to the hype that has surrounded him by finding the back of the net on 4 occasions and assisting 5 goals, a tally far greater than Gabriel Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey, John Carew and Nathan Delfouneso put together.
Predicted return: 1 assist

Stewart Downing
With rumours of a move rife amongst the mainstream media, Downing certainly has something to prove to both Villa fans and possibly his potential suitors. He is Villa’s top scorer this season, finding the back of the net 5 times and has managed to assist others on 3 instances. Certainly one of the team’s most creative and attacking prospects, Downing looks to be enjoying his run of injury-free playing time and his assist count should profit from Bent’s arrival.
Predicted return: 1 goal

Ashley Young
Ashley Young has arguably been one of Villa best players in their so far modest season and this hasn’t gone unnoticed by the FPL bonus points judges who has dished out 13 his way, the highest at the club. Like Downing, Young has played a vital role in providing and creating opportunities and this has seen him assist 5 times. If Darren Bent lives up to his transfer fee then Young’s assist contributions will surely benefit.
Predicted return: 1 assist

James Collins
Although the Villa backline has been rather inconsistent, James Collins has provided some much needed no-nonsense strength. The defender has picked up 9 bonus points and on two occasions has chipped in with a goal, including one last weekend in the Second City Derby. If you’re looking at the Villa defence then Collins looks the best prospect, with Kyle Walker perhaps the budget option to consider at 4.0.
Predicted return: 4 Played points

I’m really confused on my transfers and lineup for this week. Help please?

    This is my lineup:

    GK: Hart (Al-Habsi)

Def: Evra, Hangeland, Coleman (Toure, Evatt)

Mid: Nani, VDV, Nasri, Nolan, Adam

    Fwd: Tevez, DJ Campbell (Elmander)

I have 1 free transfer and 3.4 in the bank, and I would prefer not taking a hit.

I was thinking Elmander for Berba, RVP, Bent, or bringing in Vidic or Ivanovic.

    Any opinions?

I could be wrong but if your playing Tevez/DJ/Bent up front and 3 at the back you can only play 4 in the midfield(Nani/VDV/Nasri/Adam)

    Some advice please,

With Rafael poss out for a few weeks, i had convinced myself that MU won't keep a clean sheet so i'll bench him for future games, no big lose. Now he is available for selection against Blackpool i'm thinking i should play him over djorou.
Should i leave in on bench or put him in?

I'm not worrying too much about DGW defenders. I have Konchesky and Rafael thanks to a long-ish term strategy, which didn't work out too well, but I'm not too bothered since I've got 3 strikers and 2 mids from the DGW which is enough for me. Still toying with Dempsey for Bale/Yaya for 4 points, but not convinced it's worth it.

Liverpool have the friendlier fixtures on paper and rely on Torres. United don't rely as much on Berba. I'd like both this week but if I had to choose then it would be Torres.

That's very good of you! I can't really recall what big move I was planning on making, but I know that with any other week I'd be really happy with the 11 I can put out. However, I'm lacking Berbatov, Rooney and Tevez and wondered if I should splash the WC?

Thing is, it would only be to make 2 or 3 changes and I could talk myself into losing Fabregas and Carroll to make way for say, Dempsey and Rooney/Berbatov.

Looking ahead at GW25, 26 and 27, I reckon a careful transfer here and a considered one there, and I won't even need a WC! Perhaps I should just blow it this week!

Torres has been awful though? Yes he has kind fixtures but Liverpool are very frustrating this year. I cant understand why anyone could justify buying a player who is not playing well and costs as much as he does for the pure reason that "Oh his fixtures look nice!"

I don't get this, "Torres has been awful" malarky. Every time I've seen him play, Liverpool have provided next to nothing, zilch, notcha for him to work with.

The only change I've seen in the Everton match is Torres being prepared to run the channels more, chase lost causes. He still only had a couple of chances, and one of those hit the post.

If Liverpool's confidence improves then the midfield might start creating something and Torres will benefit from that.

I can agree that he has been frustrated because of the poor performances from the rest of the Liverpool players. However for plenty of matches Torres hasnt bothered chasing the ball, given up when contesting for it etc. Yes against Everton he ran harder, in fairness thats a derby match, most players play harder in that kind of a fixture.

And dont get me wrong, I like him as a player. I just cant justify paying that amount of money for someone with such poor returns. If King Kenny turns things around then Ill reconsider buying him.

I'll be honest, he's one of those players I quite like seeing in my team! Yes, there should be none of this such sentimentality in FFS but he's a player than can score a hat-trick in a flash. He hasn't gone to being a bad player overnight (and all those other cliches).

DGW + friendly fixture afterwards then I'll review his contribution to my team.

Thats what has worried me so much, seeing how much hes become fed up with playing. Hopefully the DGW will prove me wrong and work out well for ya, as it is Im going to play RVP and Tevez. Think I am finally resigned to selling Carroll with the latest news.

Was gonna take a hit anyway o go Foley > Vidic. Instead I could do Carroll > Rooney but that forces me to bench N'Zog or Nasri.

I think the net gain might be greater by getting Vidic who would start ahead of Kolarov/Rafael. Should I just stick with the original plan and sell Carroll next week?

Lol, have you played in a rugby team mate? When you think about it its really gay. Naked in showers (When your older, could you imagine my age?), big blokes touching etc. etc. But its the total opposite, anyone who is slightly gay gets beatings.

          Is it a sliding scale?

          Slightly gay - beatings
          50% gay - GBH
95% game - kicked to death

You'd need superaccurate homometer to police that system.

    SUBS: begovic, vdv, pantsil, djourou

      Rather captain Nani.

Don't understand the N'Zogbia love - rather Dempsey in my opinion.

Surely you have to start Pantsil over Kolarov for the double. And there is no way I could leave VdV on the bench, I'd drop Nasri - VdV is everything at Spurs, Nasri is becoming less of a factor with Cesc around.

    B. Do I bench VDV or Adam? I went for Adam, but looking at all the injuries Newcastle have, VDV could run riot.

Lads I am starting to think that is good to sell Carroll. He will be out for 2-3 weeks more so it means that he will miss next 3 GW's and even the double. He will fall in price further so it will be not that bad loss. I hope the striker in will rise buy 0.1 so it will become good.

    Anybody still holding on Carroll?

"He is probably doubtful for our next game too," explained Pardew on Thursday afternoon.

"We think it's going to be around two or three weeks from where he is now."

Next 3 GW's for New are on 22 jan, 2 and 5 feb, nost so encouraging.

I was going to hold on until I heard the news you've heard, reason being for me that RVP is looking like the safest bet for Arsenal coverage. I imagine or hope that Carroll will drop a couple by the time I want him back.

I'm holding on to him because there aren't many good options in that price range (imo) so i will jsut want him back when fit. Also had him fro mthe start so would lose the pennies and would just have selection problems without him anyway.

All that aside he was in contention for this week no? What makes you think another 2-3 weeks?

The reason for me is the potential value drop over that time, you're right he's the best option in that price range but I've got the option of going 5 in midfield with Nasri or keep Barton as bench fodder and play RVP up top, and I think that's going to be a better enough option to justify losing probably 0.3.

    Hart (carson)

    toure vidic djourou (bardsley bramble)

    nani bale vdv nasri (barton)

    berba tevez carrol

thinking about bardsley/toure -> coleman this gw. Is toure fit, and who do you think I should get rid of?

Later on I will do berba -> rvp and toure/bardsley -> rafael

Problem is that I can't bring in rvp next gw if ! change bardsley -> coleman which is the transfer I would prefer and I'm therefore thinking about taking out toure this gw.

    Thoughts?

After literally hours of debate over bringing Torres or Rooney in for Drogs, I finally went for Berba, due to a number of factors: He's (joint)top scorer in the prem, in one of my leagues the three guys below me have him so we'll all get the same points, and in my other the guy below me has Rooney and Torres so I might just pull further away..also, I'm off to Bulgaria tommorow to visit the Mrs parent so its destiny that he will bang a few in against Brum and Blackpool!

....if he plays both games....not long to CL returns so SAF will be looking to rest players if he can

piss on my bonfire. I could be totally wrong, but just cant see Rooney or Torres doing much, they've both looked a shadow of their former selves for most of the season..

I had a mate who was going to the Man U - Blackburn game, so filled his team with Man Utd players so the game would carry more meaning. One of which was Berbatov. 5 goals later and you could say he was pretty happy!

Anyone not played your January WC yet? What are your plans? (Make sure you have your team linked when you reply to this ;-))

I'm struggling to see when I'm going to play it. I'm even hoping we'll get some injuries or red cards to the likes of VDV and Nani so I'll have an advantage! Shocking, I know.

I've got Djourou, Fabregas and Van Persie already so probably only need 2 free transfers to set me up that week.

Yeah, that makes sense. I've just got to hope there's been some transfers, rotation and unexpected injuries/suspensions to really benefit from it!
