When Carlos Tevez fetched his brace and Bonus in Gameweek 23 to boost his owners’ returns and put a knife in my heart, I searched everywhere for a scrap of consolation. The only thread I could muster was that, given his return against Wolves, his owners would surely think twice about swapping in double Gameweek assets or even Robin Van Persie. Sitting on Dimitar Berbatov and Fernando Torres, I could only look for my faith in them ahead of Gameweek 24 to pay off and hope that Tevez owners would sit still. There might just be a silver lining in there somewhere.

This evening Tevez huffed a puffed around a Villa Park pitch with his owners hoping that he could throw off the shackles and match the impressive tallies recorded by Torres, Berbatov and Van Persie – he failed.

The power certainly shifted. Berbatov exploded once again – another hat-trick, taking him to 17 goals for the season. The formula now seems confirmed – Old Trafford+Wayne Rooney=Big Berbatov returns.

Rooney himself, wrongly selected ahead of the Bulgarian in my Scout Picks going on today’s showing, fetched a pair of assists and scraped Bonus. The trip to Blackpool may yet bring further points for Rooney, but with confidence flowing through his icy veins, few would back against further Berbatov returns at Bloomfield Road. That’s if he plays of course – we need reminding that Alex Ferguson dropped his goal machine to the bench following his five goals against Blackburn; nothing is assured.

Having said that, perhaps Robin Van Persie’s contribution in Arsenal’s 3-0 drubbing of Wigan was nailed-on. Subject of a recent Knee Jerk, the Dutchman’s form continues to demand the upmost attention from Fantasy Managers. Van Persie has snatched the thunder from both Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas and is hauling points at an alarming rate. With fixtures falling in his lap, it’s hard to see Van Persie letting up; unless another tweak or twinge intervenes of course.

Then we have Torres – his brace at Wolves signaled his gradual ascent back to form. Two goals away from home, with Fulham at Anfield still to come in the Gameweek. He’ll be licking his lips, as will his owners.

What a difference a week makes. Suddenly Carlos doesn’t look so essential. While he’s got his feet up in midweek gazing at the pictures of his kids on the mantelpiece, Torres, Berbatov and Rooney will be helping themselves to more points. Then, in Gameweek 25, while he takes the banana skin trip to Birmingham – today’s big scoring trio all have home fixtures to follow their doubles.

Few of us can find a place for all these riches. Fantasy Managers have no choice but to shuffle the forward line with form and fixtures, back hunches and hope for results. One thing looks certain – standing still, getting locked in by FPL prices and putting faith in long-term returns from your strikers looks folly. Having the resolve to say goodbye an old faithful is a big ask, but if you can anticipate the power shifts or at least go with it, it looks likely to prove crucial.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

it's a 60% yes i reckon. o'shea dominated the right flank, made so many crosses and got 2 assists so anyone would think he has a shot at cementing a place in RB. but in essence, fergie probably thinks of him as a utility man.

    I've got a team of:

    Foster, Jaask
    Coleman, Konchesky, Alcaraz, Crainey, Kolarov
    Fabregas, VDV, Nani, Dempsey, Adam
    Torres, RVP, Carroll

    BANK: 0.2

I've got 2 free transfers that I want to use this week, and am leaning towards:

    Konchesky --> Kelly
    Crainey --> Bardsley

I hate using transfers on defenders though, but is there anywhere else that definitely needs improvement in my team?

Surely it's time to get tid of Kolarov? Get Djourou - double gw coming up.

Or Odemwingie in place of carrol? WBA have Wigan at home and double in gw 27.

Kingson-got a cut on the head that could be stitched-depends whether he can wear protective headgear. I guess if he can, he'll be back sooner rather than later.

@Marknlard: figuring out who'll be the BLP keeper on GW27 will be a pain in the arse. I originally intended to use kingson for GW 25 & 27.

    Hi guys,

Getting killed by the two leaders in front of me so far this week due to Berba and Dempsey!! arghhh
Feeling a knee jerk wildcard coming on.

    Was thinking of:

    Alhabsi (foster)

    Coleman/Rafael/Kolarov - (Walker) (Murphy)
    Fabregas/Nani/VDV/Adam - (Ferguson)
    Tevez/Torres/Van Persie

Cant handle bringing in Berbatov as he is just as likely to cool down, or am I being an idiot and not picking him as I dont like him.
Picking up Murphy and Ferguson for triple gwk coming up.

    Thoughts would be great....
team linked for any further/alternative suggestions.

      Hart > Al Habsi
Or an Arsenal keeper. It's all good.
To get that... Torres to Odemwingie. Cracking fixtures.
Which means Ferguson can be upgraded massivley after triple GW.
Walker to Kelly and Rafa to Vidic are good too.
      In my opinion 🙂

Yeah not bad advice at all.
I want Hart but Fosters triple coming up is stopping me. Want Vidic, Odemwingie is an interesting differential.
        Thoughts on Rooney?

you're quite right about the berbatov cool down factor, although MU's fixtures do look good and berb does well at home and if paired up with rooney. perhaps you should lean more on getting berb. so maybe forgo tevez for berb because they're of the same flash-in-a-pan species. murphy and ferguson sound good if you're tied up in cash but just be prepared to get triple 3-pointers(=9) from ferguson.

Good call on ferguson for sure.

        Tevez-Berbatov-Van Persie

or Berbatov - Torres - Van Persie

Torres coming good but not sure on consistency. I guess this is an issue for everyone this year!

      Don't panic.

I was joint top yesterday morning and the guy in 4th place in our league wildcarded and gambled on captaining Dempsey and filling his team with DGW'ers for this gameweek. He also sold Tevez for Van Persie and Torres for Berbatov.

He's now 5 pts ahead of me, but there's still enough time to turn it around especially as I have Nani as captain at Backpool.

You still have Torres as captain and I'd fancy him to do something against Fulham at Anfield.

The midweek games could still significantly alter things

Because, I think, most people who got monster scores were the ones who wildcarded this week and filled their teams with DGW players, plus Van Persie.

it will be interesting to see what happens when those of us that are playing our wildcards in GW27 get to stock upon premium DGW players like the wildcarders this week had a chance to do.

I can see a lot of people who wildcarded this week taking 8 point hits for GW27.

I wildcarded and won't be taking a hit for GW27 (assuming nothing comes up). Can quite easily keep a rollover transfer in the next couple of weeks, got my Brum defender already, and not particularly interested in Stoke, WBA (look at their fixtures after the double), Newc or Wolves double players. Only Arsenal, and I can easily do Torres>RvP to fulfill my Arsenal quota, and I then wouldn't touch more Spurs in case I'm screwed in GW28.

          You did it sensibly.

I think the majority of the 100 point plus brigade who wildcarded only looked at this DGW and picked players for that. Good luck to them but most people will score well this GW so those who can still play theirs in GW27 may yet have an advantage.

          Time will tell.

I certainly think I made the right decision to keep hold of my last WC.
