Liverpool have officially confirmed that a fee of 26.5 million Euros has been agreed with Ajax for Luis Suarez. The club are now discussing personal terms with the player.

This move has understandably increased speculation concerning the future of Fernando Torres following Chelsea’s official bid which was declined by Liverpool in the last 24 hours.

We will have more to follow on this story, including a full Scout Report on Suarez over the weekend, if the deal is confirmed.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Could be an interesting investment! WOuld be worried that he will be classed as a striker and play out wide though

      to West Brom?

From what I've seen of him (very little I might add), he seems like a pretty talented striker.

So what price would Suarez have to be for you to take a punt?

It's not a realistic price but 7m or under I think for me. Simply because there's too many other good options around the 9m mark.

More chance of Rooney scoring sometime soon than Suarez to be valued at under 7. In other words, extremely unlikely.

That's why I said it was unrealistic. I don't expect him to be that cheap which is why I said I wouldn't take a punt.

Seems these Americans are no mugs. Moneyball through and through.

Buy player of unfashionable nationality. Tick (kinda).
Buy player in his early twenties. Tick.
(Possibly) sell player when you are offered more than he is worth ( whoever he is). Tick.
    But perhaps most importantly:
Replace your best players before you've even considered selling them. Tick.

...and to make my point in less of a rush (crying infants are such an inconvenience... 😉 )

Until recently Uruguay had been seen as a national team of big hulking defenders who would generally kick lumps out of you and then get sent off, finishing games with 8 or 9 men and holding out for a 0-0 draw (not my stereotype, but one regularly doled out in the '90s).
The focus on their youth teams under Tabarez has meant that they now have a team of talented youth (Suarez, Lodeiro, Cavani) mingled with experienced battlers (Lugano, Eguren etc.) - Not sure where your man Abreu fits? Talented experience?

However, for those that missed the excellent displays of the team at the recent world cup and instead viewed it as a plucky anomaly, uruguayans still fit the old mould. That means that in an inflated transfer market, your average Uruguayan costs less than he should.

Buy undervalued players, and sell them at a profit. That's moneyball. Your team may be transient, but it will improve and you'll inevitably have more money to improve it further as a result.

(As the lads below mention though. The books do it more justice than I can).

Moneyball ----- I watch baseball too, i love it! oakland a's are moneyball

the reason why they go for young players is actually something else

Liverpool is private equity like man utd. they dodge taxes pretending to be in debt but they are 'debt-owned'.

but the real thing about private equity is these 'owners' is only a loan of about 5 years - so they will make money if when they sell the net worth of liverpool has gone up from the bargain 300m they got it for (so obviously buy 20-23yr olds then if they come good their asset price will have quadrupled maybe)

Facing a 32 deficit on my rival who know's nothing about football so have decided to wildcard leaving me with this team:

    Foster Begovic
    Rafael Johnson Djourou Kelly Coleman
    Fabregas Nani VDV Adam Ferguson
    RVP Tevez Berbatov

I know - Ferguson - but he is a nice cheap bench warmer and allows me to get a decent defence.

Any thoughts about how I can improve it greatly appreciated 😀

    1 brum player (foster),
3 arse players (szcz, fab, van)
    2 spurs (vdv and hutton)

That means in wk28 I will not be able to field a full strenth side, unless I transfer out hutton (most likey candidate) and a GK.

Anyone in a similar position? Are you going to sub your players, or just accept it?

Comedy timing is everything. Yesterday, Liverpool had made a 'disrepectful' bid of £12.7m for Suarez. But 24hrs later they nearly double it to £23m and get their man.

Using the money from the possible Torres to Chelsea transfer? Or FSG opening their wallet to convince Torres that the club have ambition?

It'll be interesting how it plays out.

I need a little advice with my wc team due to Arse, Totty & Birm not playing gw 28

    I have/will have

    Foster, Bego
    Rafael, Coleman, Djourou, Simpson, Kelly
Fabs, Malouda, Van Der Vaart, Ferguson, Adam
    Tevez, Berbatov, Van Persie

That leaves me 2.1 in the bank.

I realsie my defence is weak. Like the post above, Ferguson is a benchwarmer.

Should I change Djourou, Kelly or Simpson for Kolarov (I know, I know... replce with "better defender" if you like). Are Kelly and Djourou likely to play regularly?

    Thanx.

Any Utd fans sit there sometimes and wonder what could have been with Forlan? When he went on that run at the start of his Utd career where he couldn't buy a goal, it just turned into this big joke in the world of football. Even when he broke the duck he never really settled, and eventually Fergie shipped him out in an almost sympathetic manner. Turns out he wasn't too bad after all... he's turned into one of the best goal scorers in the world, for club and country. If you take out his time at Utd, his club record is 164 goals in 308 games... incredible.

Not saying Utd have massively missed him over the years since, but I think he could have turned into a legend of English football had he stayed.

I understood that the last drop for SAF was when he slipped and missed a sitter because he didn't use studs like he was told to by SAF himself 😀 Didn't put on a Utd jersey after that... The funny part is that this top 50 utd goals compilation on youtube has a lot of Forlan goals on it and they're class too... I suggest anyone who hasn't seen the vid takes a look, like it or not utd have scored some amazing goals over the years.

Took too long to adapt and lost all his confidence.

There are all sorts of factors that may have hindered him as well, such as language difficulties, settling in to life in England, that kind of thing. The move to Villarreal was best for him and Man United.

Can I ask a dumb question?

Why are RVP and Fabs topping the captain's poll when the Ticker shows their game as average and Man U's game as very favourable?

I'm sorry, but it's the reason all the same 🙂

No wonder the captain's poll choice hasnt been doing too well this year. Thanks for answering though 🙂

I'll give it a crack - Fabs has a great record against Everton, RVP is in red hot form, Nani would normally top the poll but he has looked out of sorts for the last few games, the inevitable "will Berb be rested?" questions and Rooney is arse. Good enough?

Good enough, that's much more convincing. I'm going to stick with Berbs I think and hope to see the team sheet before the GW ends on Tuesday.

        thanks, Lost

Good plan, I am leaning towards Berb myself, maybe Tevez, or RvP....oh no.

ive a dilemma as to who to leave out of my mid/attack this week and who to captain

mids: nani fabs vdv adam dempsey
    forwards: van persie tevez berba

had fabs as captain but considering dann is now longer at the centre of birminghams defense i'm starting to think about tevez.

any help would be mmmmmm ....., helpful

Wildcard team, few very tricky choice this week:

    Foster, Hennesey

    Pantsil, Kelly, Evatt (Djourou, Coleman)

    Fabregas, Nani, Adam, Brunt (VDV)

    RVP(c), Berbatov, Tevez

Bench correct? Can't choose between Djourou and the rest, therefore as I have a lot of Arsenal coverage I opted to drop him. VDV on the bench is never good.

its a similar issue to me, the front 8 are just too good, if you want vdv there, would you not just drop brunt?

but id stick with the defense you have.

I fancy Wigan to go down and they are pretty leaky. Will have a think! Wildcarded Brunt in, too good a fixture to bench it feels. I always favour the home advantage.
