And so it begins – Newcastle have accepted a club record fee reported to be in excess of £35 million from Liverpool, a new record for the club and a fee that will make him the most eighth most expensive player in the history of football. This comes after the Newcastle Number 9 handed in a transfer request which was accepted by the Magpies after the club had previously turned down two Liverpool bids for their top-scorer.

An official statement on the Liverpool website reads:

“Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a Club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll. The Club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical.”

Carroll is currently valued at 6.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and has been a revelation this season with a return of 113 points, including 11 goals, 6 assists and 18 bonus points. He has been one of the most owned players in the game and, even though he has missed the last four Premier League games though injury, 30.9% of Fantasy Manager have kept him in their squads.

The striker has recently been in Sweden seeing a specialist because of his aforementioned thigh injury and, if terms are agreed and the medical passed, he will not be expected to make his Liverpool debut against Stoke on Wednesday (February 2) or even Chelsea on Saturday (February 6). Carroll’s first Liverpool outing would most likely come in the fixture with Wigan on February 12.

Carroll will form a new look partnership with Luis Suarez with Fernando Torres’ departure to Chelsea now looking inevitable.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Well he's a good player, but I'm not too sure how well he will fit in the Premier League. Seems very expensive but today the world is a bit mad.

Barton has been absolutely immense, and how did Wilshere fare against him in their last meeting?

Barton plays for Newcastle (9th). Wilshere plays for Arsenal (2nd).

So that makes Wilshere better? What a ridiculous argument, expected more sense from you MF. Thus Darren Gibson (1st) is better than Fabregas (2nd)?

If the deal for Torres goes through. It would represent outstanding business by LFC. Very commendable indeed.

        Torres 9 goals & 5 assists
        Carroll 11 goals & 6 assists

OK... that's fpl but Torres has been rubbish at L'pool this season and Carroll may give that needed "something"... if he's not injured.

Torres by his standards has been terrible. Carroll is enjoying the best form in his career.

The fact that Carroll has only 2 more goals and 1 more assist despite that speaks volumes.

It's an absolute shocker for liverpool.

Carroll has also played significantly less minutes, and has a higher goals/shots & goals/games ratio though.

Torres is a class act no doubt about it. As for a shocker? Definitely not. Carroll is the future, he has all the player attributes to become one of Englands very greats. To get 50m for a player who wants to leave is brilliant - buying englands brightest prospect for 35m is high but if you want to compete at the top you've got to get the players you want. Carroll/Suarez partnership is the perfect mix. Better than Torres/Suarez.

Not sure if Luiz will slot straight into the side, but when he does then yes, Ivanovic should move out to RB. He's so much better than Bosingwa...

Although, if we do go with a narrow midfield four to accommodate both Torres and Drogba, Bosingwa's case for playing RB will be stronger because we'll need someone to provide natural width down the right.

They've lost one of the worlds best strikers and despite getting a good price for him blown it on two players who have only performed at the top level for 5. One of whom is injured don't forget.

Carroll will be a great player, don't get me wrong. But they have paid over double what he is worth right now.

Cascarino on SSN. He's very entertaining. I've just finished his book. The Gargoyle is on too, watch it!

Similar to my team - except for Vidic, Zabaleta, Cahill and Odemwingie

I have gone for Rafael, Adam (atm) and Berbatov
