Any debate over whether Fernando Torres would start against his old club, score a goal or celebrate should he score were put to bed with a tepid performance by both himself and Chelsea.

The Blues were adjusted, as predicted by most informed pundits, by reverting back to the diamond formation so favoured in the early weeks of Carlo Ancellotti’s rein in charge. This saw Torres and Drogba paired up front with Anelka playing just behind, serving as the head of a diamond midfield. What was clear was that, whilst this provided success in the later stages of the game against Sunderland when trialed, against a well organised Liverpool team with three central defenders, Chelsea’s lack of width saw a serious lack of penetration.

It remains to be seen whether this was just a case of Chelsea coming up against a team who had been set up to combat the formation, or whether it is a formation which simply doesn’t serve to complement their current contingent of players. There is certainly a whiff of this mirroring the Shevchenko move whereby the Ukrainian was crowbared into a team with ultimately little success. I may be premature in my assesment but this looks like a formation which will take time for Chelsea to adjust to – time which, given their current predicament, they may not have.

In light of Chelsea’s FA Cup run and the effect a potential victory over Everton may have, namely cancellation of Gameweek 28’s fixtures against Manchester United, coupled with the lack of fluidity and certainty about Chelsea going forward, the Knee Jerks’ assesment is to hold fire on investment in Chelsea players (thats if you still have any of course). If you have Torres for example your head is surely going to be turned by the more reliable and more in-form Carlos Tevez and/or Robin van Persie.

One player that did catch the eye and followed up with recent goalscoring form was Liverpool’s Portugese midfielder Raul Meireles. Already picked up by a 5% of players (including Granville) he has been playing in an advanced position supporting the lone striker – in this game Dirk Kuyt. Obviously his returns could be affected by the introduction of Luis Suarez but his form in recent weeks, including 4 goals and 1 assist in the last 5 games, is hard to ignore at £7 million on the FPL game. A word of warning however is the fact that Meireles has never historically been a prolific goalscoring midfielder. This could well just be a purple patch and whether or not this can be sustained remains to be seen. His continued positioning behind a solitary striker, with Andy Carroll still injured, could provide the key for continued returns.

One thing is for certain – Liverpool, under Kenny Dalglish, are looking both a lot stronger at the back (4 clean sheets in the last 4 games), and a lot more fluid going forward.  There’s definately a feel good factor at Anfield since the return of King Kenny, something which can’t be said of Stamford Bridge in spite of the arrival of £50m Fernando Torres.

    quote from an arsenal blog

    Djourou, arguably our best defender, went off with an ankle injury and given his history, I wouldn’t be surprised if he needs surgery to fix something or the other.

          ya, it's rather disappointing from a fantasy perspective. would have been perfect cheap arsenal coverage and my back line would be set. now looks like johnson in followed by kolarov for gw 28 w/wildcard.

    Torres def gone -> Odemwingie

    Any opinion on one of these three (I'm leaning towards the first)?

    Djourou -> Huth

      i'm going w/foster, two games at home and the better keeper. although now w/djourou out and if you're looking for cheap arsenal defense, that may be the way to go.

      Was planning too until the Djourou injury.

      Now I don't think so as he was a major reason why their defence had been playing so well lately. I got Foster last night and will probably double up with Johnson. Huth will be my other DGW def.

      As an aside, I bought Kelly in last night to try and make some money on him but I may actually keep him now too. If Liv can go on the road and shut out a rampant Chelsea attack then I think Kelly's worth keeping hold of.

      Will have enough defensive cover to bench him in bad matchups anyway.

    For the upcoming GW, I am seriously considering benching Tevez and playing Barton. Am I living up to my name or does it make slight sense?

    If Man City were playing other team I wouldn't even think about it, but I don't think Tevez will score, and even if it does, I can't see it being more than 1, which will only be a couple of points more than Barton gets over 2 games if he does naff all.

      Makes total sense.

      If in doubt you can have a look at their PPG. Barton has 4.6 PPG and Tevez has 6.7.

      So ON AVERAGE next gameweek Barton will get 9.2 (4.6 x 2) points and Tevez 6.7.

      Pretty handy for double gameweeks.

    I know Lamps, Drogba, and Terry are all on the wrong side of 30 and Abromovich is tiring of his toy, but I don't see where Torres fits in the Chelski scheme of things. He should have finished out the season and moved on to a Spanish club in the summer.

    Those people with a hard-on for Cahill are in for a disappointment with the recent emergence of Saha. Don't see the former Milwall player doing as well as before he left for the Asian Cup.

      if you were liverpool, would you turn down 50M on a striker who put in his request and didn't want to be there? if anything his stock would have fallen as he may have got injured again. where in spain? only two clubs worth playing for that can afford him and one he'd never play for, while the other are already stacked up top. i was thinking more like italy.

      Terry could play another 5 years at least if he avoids injury.
      Can't get any slower.
      Lamps and Drog can defo play for years to come too.
      Dunno where people get this s**t that once you hit 30 you aren't 'up for it' anymore.

      Look at Scholes and Giggs.

      I don't see where Torres fits either but I'm sure he'll click in eventually and Liverpool was probably the worst team he could have played against.

        Scholes and Giggs don't play every game, and if Anderson had played up to his potential and Valencia wasn't injured, one of them would be gone already. Manu's weakness is the midfield. That's why they lost yesterday.

    As a Chelsea supporter im constantly finding myself gutted to see our players bang on in the press how we are "Buzzing" and going to "win all our remaining games" only for them to let us down on the pitch. What were Chelsea defense thinking for the goal today? players all drawn to the ball leaving Meirieles unmarked. We were so average at best today.

    Im second in my league and gone from 10 behind last weekend to 56 points behind leader now. Game over!

    anyone benching tevez this week to play five in the middle? its very tempting, i can see fergie 451 and with city probably gonna do the same thing, it might be worth playing five in midfield (an extra doubler or whatever) and keeping tevez for the following week.

    im currently
    walcott, nani, etherington, adam
    rvp, odem

    idea is to lose VDV for someone, and bench tevez, or lose tevez for a wek and get carew for the doubler too, then get tevez bac next week

            season keeper for me, i'd want him back at some point then wouldn't be able to afford him since i bought him straight away.

              I bought him straight away too, but I can afford to get him back. Like I said he will go down a bit once hes red flagged. Rather have someone I can actually play over GW27/28 and maybe 29.

      I have exactly the same team that you mentioned there except I have Barton instead of Ethers, and I'm am thinking the same as you. Interesting idea about Carew.

      I'm planning on playing a 3-4-3 RBJ, and that incudes Tevez.

      At the moment I'm dropping Nani and my front 3 are RVP, Tevez and Odem. On WC this week and currently have a MF of VdV, Nolan, Adam and Fabs. Seriously thinking of gambling with Walcott in for VdV though.

    Anyone think Torres' substitution showed that maybe Carlo didn't have much say in the transfer?

    Could quite easily be a coincidence, I guess him nor Drogba were doing much anyway.

    Hi guys... Anyone got any idea when we might know if asr / tot have their week 28 game on. Looking at bringing in Odemwing and fab but don't want too many non players for the week after... Cheers

    Is this worth a 8pt hit?

    Djourou -> R Johnson
    N'Zogbia -> Walcott
    Dzeko -> Odemwingie

        I have 3.1 left over doing that.
        Why not the Nzog -> Walcott? Tbh i will want Cahill from GW 28 onwards, but the Walcott double looks good, so why not that, and then next week Walcott -> Cahill?

    The Torres transfer will prove to be as bad as the Shevchenko transfer.

    Dilemma here

    Have 6 double GW players plus Djourou and VDV

    original plan was to have 2 free transfers for next week with players not playing and so on, but now wondering whether I should take out djourou. Have carr already so should I get Kelly/Evatt/Williamson?

    or stick with my plan to have 2 frees next week?
