Any debate over whether Fernando Torres would start against his old club, score a goal or celebrate should he score were put to bed with a tepid performance by both himself and Chelsea.

The Blues were adjusted, as predicted by most informed pundits, by reverting back to the diamond formation so favoured in the early weeks of Carlo Ancellotti’s rein in charge. This saw Torres and Drogba paired up front with Anelka playing just behind, serving as the head of a diamond midfield. What was clear was that, whilst this provided success in the later stages of the game against Sunderland when trialed, against a well organised Liverpool team with three central defenders, Chelsea’s lack of width saw a serious lack of penetration.

It remains to be seen whether this was just a case of Chelsea coming up against a team who had been set up to combat the formation, or whether it is a formation which simply doesn’t serve to complement their current contingent of players. There is certainly a whiff of this mirroring the Shevchenko move whereby the Ukrainian was crowbared into a team with ultimately little success. I may be premature in my assesment but this looks like a formation which will take time for Chelsea to adjust to – time which, given their current predicament, they may not have.

In light of Chelsea’s FA Cup run and the effect a potential victory over Everton may have, namely cancellation of Gameweek 28’s fixtures against Manchester United, coupled with the lack of fluidity and certainty about Chelsea going forward, the Knee Jerks’ assesment is to hold fire on investment in Chelsea players (thats if you still have any of course). If you have Torres for example your head is surely going to be turned by the more reliable and more in-form Carlos Tevez and/or Robin van Persie.

One player that did catch the eye and followed up with recent goalscoring form was Liverpool’s Portugese midfielder Raul Meireles. Already picked up by a 5% of players (including Granville) he has been playing in an advanced position supporting the lone striker – in this game Dirk Kuyt. Obviously his returns could be affected by the introduction of Luis Suarez but his form in recent weeks, including 4 goals and 1 assist in the last 5 games, is hard to ignore at £7 million on the FPL game. A word of warning however is the fact that Meireles has never historically been a prolific goalscoring midfielder. This could well just be a purple patch and whether or not this can be sustained remains to be seen. His continued positioning behind a solitary striker, with Andy Carroll still injured, could provide the key for continued returns.

One thing is for certain – Liverpool, under Kenny Dalglish, are looking both a lot stronger at the back (4 clean sheets in the last 4 games), and a lot more fluid going forward.  There’s definately a feel good factor at Anfield since the return of King Kenny, something which can’t be said of Stamford Bridge in spite of the arrival of £50m Fernando Torres.

Do I go all in on the gw27 doubles with the wilcard & hope to make the final push in to the top 50 or gamble on fewer double players, hope lots of them get rested & then strike in gw28 when many teams will have missing games & people will struggle to field a decent 11… mmm I can’t decide.

    Anyone?

The gw28 blanks are a pain. Mean that even with a wildcard dgw27, might need hits gw28. So over-committing on Arsenal/Spurs/Brum is similar to taking points hits prior to a dgw to bring in doublers.

Obviously the Arsenal-Spurs game may go ahead, but we won't know in time.

dont over commit with the wc, mistake i made in september - knew i wanted 2 players in just didnt have the fixtures and paid the penalty to get them a week later - coleman being one gr.

i think il gamble on the arsenal in those gameweeks.

Well use your WC this week to set yourself up for the double and GW28.

I'm on it. Making a bid for some cash in the trading between now and Saturday, then going full-on with dgwers.

That would be telling, and as I am not a Geordie I actually don't really mind Sunderland that much - it's not as if they ever beat us and the majority of their fans on here are all Grade A muppets who are quite entertaining.

Actually, although I lived in Newcastle for a long time, I could never muster any visceral hatred of the mackems either (mind you that was round about the [first] Keegan era, so it would’ve been more pity than hatred). Maybe if I was born and bred it’d be a different story.

so thought i'd vent this w/people who'd share my pain. went to a bar this morning to watch chelsea/liverpool (9am my time, so just opened). a group of about 7 of us are the only ones there and ask him to put on the game after another place we went to said they didn't have the channel (found out later they did). so we rush there and make it 2 mins. in and the manager says, "watching soccer on super bowl sunday?! that's so un-american. do you remember july 4th, you know what that's all about?" my response: "do you remember we're paying customers that actually give you business this early, now can i have a beer or what?" There are quite a few teams with good fixtures in GW27 & 28:

      Villa, Everton, Stoke.
      Blackpool, Newcastle, Liverpool.

Then there's Arsenal and Spurs with the potential blank in GW28, but good fixtures both before and after.

And there's City with a tough fixture GW27 but a good run GW28 and onwards.

Stoke and Newcastle are the big ones.

Double in GW 27 and a home tie GW 28.

West Brom offense also could be worth investment seeing as their double GW is so nice and they don't have a blank GW28.

Djourou being injured throws a huge spanner in my overall plan.

Arsenal defense is hard to come by, and Szczesny is the only decent option.

But that would mean sacrificing Foster who has been save master and has a great double gameweek coming up so that's a no. I guess I'll have to go without Arsenal defense.

    Options here:

    Shawcross and Roger Johnson.

Shawcross - Stoke have 2 tough away games for their double but a brilliant WBA at home the week after. Shawcross isn't Huth though, not getting goals or bonus. Price rise also unlikely.

Johnson - Great double gameweek but no fixture GW28 which will probably mean I'll replace him. Bonus point gatherer, could get a price rise. Doubling on Brum rather than spreading the risk with Stoke.

Still think I'm going with Johnson at this point. Best Brum defender to have, and their double gameweek looks too good to pass up.

i'm keeping vdv, so not to lose $ for when i would put him back in. are you thinking lennon for spurs coverage, or someone else like ethers, bentley, etc? i think ethers might have a nice dgw pts. wise.

My midfield is kind of locked at the moment.

Nani, VdV, Fabs, Adam all stay.

That means that the only transfer I'd really look at is Yaya > Ethers or Barton

But at this point, defense looks like priority with Djourou's injury.

Ah, but what if you already have Johnson, and have Begovic too so aren't particularly keen on Huth....

Honestly don't have a clue who I'll transfer in for Djourou, if he is seriously injured of course.

        I've got to keep him.

Guys would love recommendations on my side. Played WC already, possible too early. But could not foresee Djourou and VDV injuries which as you say Camzy really throw a spanner in the works.

I had such a good week but got killed with main rival captaining Tevez. Last few weeks we've both been way above average.

Here's my plan at the moment (involves a couple of point hits) -

    GW27
    Djourou -> Carr
    Berbatov -> Best (worth it?)

    GW28
    Odemwingie -> Tevez
    VDV -> Cahill

The other option is to get Saha instead of Tevez and then upgrade Carr to a better defender. Thoughts please!

He did look good. He looked so comfortable on the ball, looked to be communicating pretty well too. Surprised at how comfortable he looked actually as a substitute on his debut. There was a moment where he left you horribly exposed at the back but tbf at one nil down i suppose he was just trying to make something happened.

      Looked very promising imo.

So any American Football fans out there.

I understand the 3rd and 10 or 3rd and 7 or whatever. But explain to me this...

Do you only lose the ball after the 4th down? Or for instance, if you throw and the defence catches is that you having lost the ball?

What if you get tackled and get taken off the pitch, is that just another down gone?

    Open Controls
    1. rabm122
      • 15 Years
      15 years, 2 months ago

After 4 downs the ball turns over to the opposing team if 10 yards are not gained.

If the opposing team's defense catches a throw ball it's called an interception and is considered a "turn-over".

If you get tackled without gaining a first down you go to the next down. Players can come on and off the pitch between downs as the play changes.

Not much of an endurance sport really. Having played a bit, I can tell you it is a bunch of standing around in between plays, etc.

No, you don't just lose the ball after the fourth down (though that is primarily the time it is lost), it can be intercepted as you say and then it's the opposing teams.

Going off the pitch is just going off the pitch - doesn't make any difference in the respect of possession/downs compared to centre of field. If you go off the pitch without going down though, the clock stops until restart.

he's been around a bit I suppose, played for Dortmund and was Milito's strike partner at Zaragoza.

Yeah he has a great work rate and always seems to be in the right channels. Who knows, maybe with a decent side around him he could get around the 15 goal mark.

At least you've got that experienced central defender you signed from Spain in the summer. What's his name? Ermm..... errrr.......

        Oh yeah, Sebastien Squillaci. Lulz.

But yeah, poor old Johan, he's already been threw more than his fair share of injuries in his career.

Huth can't keep this up can he?
The 1 goal and 1 assist were the most pathetic i think i've seen. Third goal wasn't pretty, but legit! Stoke still look pretty woeful for my money though and i might get Begovic in, so that should be enough?

Stoke's entire game plan is to win free kicks and throw-ins in dangerous positions, so unfortunately they probably will continue scoring these hideous goals...

It does amuse people when Pulis points to Etherington and Pennant as examples of how Stoke aren't just a big side, and that they do have technically gifted players, but in reality those two are only there to win the free kicks/throw-ins and to then take them.

Tuncay is the absolute counter argument there. Always did well but never got his chance.

You're right about the goals. Not sure who would make way at the moment though, i'm with

        Kolarov Coleman Walker Kelly RJohnson

Stoke's fixtures aren't particularly great either imo. He's in at the moment for the rise but i'm not feeling two stoke defenders. Kelly would be the one to go if anyone, but pool are seriously looking decent at the moment and Kelly is almost as good as oop as a wing back

Don't know why he is trying to deny it anyway. He's worked out a decent game plan and implemented it well, it's up to other teams to play around it......

This is true but I don't imagine they will ever progress from where they are now by playing that way?

But personal preference aside you can't knock it.

Huth makes a good case. He's scored enough goals already, and that's in this season where there are no predictable clean sheets anywhere.

Begovic is also good for this dgw.

But I wouldn't feel comfortable keeping both long term. Currently considering options with alternatives to both. Quite possibly doing both this dgw, then doing Huth out for Kolarov in.

Have Begovic (and Stockdale), would you bother getting Foster in (for Stockdale) before DGW27?

Or just play Begovic? Both have DGWs, although Foster´s looks to have way more CS potential.
