Any debate over whether Fernando Torres would start against his old club, score a goal or celebrate should he score were put to bed with a tepid performance by both himself and Chelsea.

The Blues were adjusted, as predicted by most informed pundits, by reverting back to the diamond formation so favoured in the early weeks of Carlo Ancellotti’s rein in charge. This saw Torres and Drogba paired up front with Anelka playing just behind, serving as the head of a diamond midfield. What was clear was that, whilst this provided success in the later stages of the game against Sunderland when trialed, against a well organised Liverpool team with three central defenders, Chelsea’s lack of width saw a serious lack of penetration.

It remains to be seen whether this was just a case of Chelsea coming up against a team who had been set up to combat the formation, or whether it is a formation which simply doesn’t serve to complement their current contingent of players. There is certainly a whiff of this mirroring the Shevchenko move whereby the Ukrainian was crowbared into a team with ultimately little success. I may be premature in my assesment but this looks like a formation which will take time for Chelsea to adjust to – time which, given their current predicament, they may not have.

In light of Chelsea’s FA Cup run and the effect a potential victory over Everton may have, namely cancellation of Gameweek 28’s fixtures against Manchester United, coupled with the lack of fluidity and certainty about Chelsea going forward, the Knee Jerks’ assesment is to hold fire on investment in Chelsea players (thats if you still have any of course). If you have Torres for example your head is surely going to be turned by the more reliable and more in-form Carlos Tevez and/or Robin van Persie.

One player that did catch the eye and followed up with recent goalscoring form was Liverpool’s Portugese midfielder Raul Meireles. Already picked up by a 5% of players (including Granville) he has been playing in an advanced position supporting the lone striker – in this game Dirk Kuyt. Obviously his returns could be affected by the introduction of Luis Suarez but his form in recent weeks, including 4 goals and 1 assist in the last 5 games, is hard to ignore at £7 million on the FPL game. A word of warning however is the fact that Meireles has never historically been a prolific goalscoring midfielder. This could well just be a purple patch and whether or not this can be sustained remains to be seen. His continued positioning behind a solitary striker, with Andy Carroll still injured, could provide the key for continued returns.

One thing is for certain – Liverpool, under Kenny Dalglish, are looking both a lot stronger at the back (4 clean sheets in the last 4 games), and a lot more fluid going forward.  There’s definately a feel good factor at Anfield since the return of King Kenny, something which can’t be said of Stamford Bridge in spite of the arrival of £50m Fernando Torres.

I dont really want an arsenal defender for two reasons

1)there a good chance of rotation meaning only one game

    2) im already down to 11 for the next week so would prefer a defender that is actually playing the following week

well, if you're on wc west brom have two home games vs. bottom two teams. shame they got rid of di matteo, crucial fixtures for the baggies where they could have easily gotten back on track to remain safe. did they really expect anything away to city? horrible timing imo.

I don't see there would be any radical fixing to be done. Not keen on Al Habsi, no CS in last 9, and tough fixtures. For another .2 you could have,Harper,Hennessey or Begovic.

Plan to do wingie to Berbatov GW28 - thoughts?

Wigan have horrible fixtures coming up, someone like Szczesny might be better, but Szczesny and Foster both might not have fixtures in game week 28. I think Ridgwell might score more points per minute than Johnson, but I'm not sure about that. All the rest seem good, I'm personally looking at Hutton also if he gets back in the team, Tottenham have a good run of fixtures, but might miss 28.

Its a tough one trying to set the team up for the DGW cos of the blank week following. The team above gives me 10 dgw players and with one tranfer I can have the same the next week. Take your point on Szczesney but would not be able to do Odemwinggie to Berbatov. Ah the decisions we have to make!!!

      Begovic instead of Al-Habsi.

Choose one of Brunt and Odemwingie, not both.

The player you choose not to have should be changed to a Newcastle one. Recommend Brunt > Barton.

Same as above Camzy. Had Begovic originally but means i cant have Berbs the next week. Brunt to Barton is interesting, I like Barton but he has two away games whilst Brunt has two home. If Brum were playing the next week I would have had Bentley.

Anyone else considering Leon Best? Newcastle have a kind run of fixtures with some winnable home games, and they have no one else to play up top with Carroll gone and Ameobi injured. Best has looked good in the last couple of home games too, returning excellent point hauls. Could be a bargain signing at just 4.3

Which of these two plans do you like better?

GW27 : Djourou, Berbatov OUT R Johnson, Zigic IN
GW28 : R Johnson, VDV OUT K Toure, Cahill IN
GW29 : Odemwingie OUT Saha IN

GW27 : Djourou OUT Carr IN
GW28 : A Young, Berbatov OUT Barton, Tevez IN
GW29 : Odemwingie OUT Saha IN

The first one gives me one more DGW player on 27 and 29 in the form of Zigic who seems to be getting into form. The second one gives me the luxury to rotate Tevez & Berba/Rooney from GW28 onwards which puts them on a run of FUL WIG BOL whu FUL new (Tevez first two games replaced by United striker).

Yes, I believe the fixture-heads are theorising that, if the Arsenal/Leyton Orient cup tie doesn't go to a replay, then the match could take place in the back-end of Gameweek 28.

It's speculation, but it probably means that we won't get an answer until at least next gameweek.

I think Foster or Szczesny are the only keepers that would be potentially worth the hit, both games at home in 27, where as WBA and blackpool also have 2 home but wont keep CS, and the other DGWers have 2 road games. Of course your 2nd keeper likely needs to be available GW28 if you took either of these two. Foster gives you an additional DGW in GW29. That along with brums defence coming off a CS while Arsenal shit the bed, makes Foster the clear frontrunning option.

    Good morning.

Lovely 10 goal effort from my team this weekend. Still not enough to crack 100, I wonder if I will ever crack 100. Despite the VDV news and DGW madness, I am holding on unless further damaging news follows. I cant justify a DGW replacement that 1.) is a player Id want any further than GW27, 2.) makes me feel comfortable losing the .5 million selling him, and 3.) would certainly outscore VDV if he plays against blackpool. Saving the transfer. 8 DGWers plus 3 out of VDV, Nani, Tevez and Berbs. Not the end of the world to have VDV and any 2 of the top 3 scorers in FPL.

However if someone can convince me of a transfer to make, Im all ears....

Szczesny, Huth, Carr, Simpson, Nani, VDV, Fabs(C), Adam, Brunt, RVP, Tevez (Berbatov, Kelly, Coleman)

So it looks like Djourou will be out of the double gw if some of the reports are correct?

Are the owners of him selling for a stoke/Birm def i assume? Stoke at least play in gw 28 so that's a plus.

I have 2 free trades, Worth doing Djourou-->Stoke def and VDV--> walcot?

Leaving me with Fab+Walcot+Rvp? Or do i roll a trade to have 2 in gw28?

    TM?

I'm selling Djourou for Johnson if he's confirmed injured.

I'm keeping VdV. He's only out for one game by the sound of things, and I'll want to have him. His fixtures GW 29 onwards are good.

      I'd roll a trade for GW 28.

You'll need to reformat your team for after the double GWs, and 28 is a good time since players who didn't plan well could stumble big time with the missing fixtures.

Thoughts on captain this GW? I know RVP is the popular shout but concerned about him playing both games, as many on here are. I dont have Fabregas in my team, so considering perhaps Walcott or even Odemwingie. Walcott I reckon should definitely start both with Nasri still injured.

i'm doing fabs. walcott could be good too and i agree i don't think rvp will play both full 90. he might come off the bench vs. wolves.

Finally played my WC, but only did three moves!
    Robinson to Begovic
    Jara to R.Johnson
    Campbell to Odemwingie

    Foster Begovic
    Vidic Kolarov Coleman Kelly R.Johnson
    Fabregas Nani Adam VDV Barton
    RVP Tevez Odemwingie

Very happy with that, but seems a bit of a waste if I only make three trades...
Anyone see anything else I can do?
    Cheers

only 3 moves and two of them were taking out DGWers w/ 2 home games? Not saying your team is lousy, many similar players as others, but that has to be the least influential WC ever played.

I just wish I played my WC GW26 instead of 25. Took Rooney and Bardsley out a week too soon, flushed away a net of 20 points.

My 2nd wc was only 3 moves, and 1 of those was an epic fail of bringing in Ferdinand.

      Stellar team.

Only thing I can think of is getting rid of VdV, but I'd only do that if you lose less than 0.3.

I'd lose 0.4, but may do it anyway.
A punt on Walcott could pay off, but him plus RVP and Fabregas seems like overkill!

If there's a week to overkill, this is it.

Up to you, but 0.4 is just slightly too much for my liking.

If you'd got him in before his rise yesterday maybe.

            Good point.
It's just he has 1 game (at the most) when others have 3.
But I know I'll want him back when he plays the 3 W's that sit at the bottom of the table back to back to back.
Guess I'll stick unless we get some concrete news.

well i already did berbatov->odemwingie , i figure with the new gaffer, west brom should go on a honeymoon run for a bit

have to decide whether or not to keep vdv.. I can easily swing him back in for gw 29 .. I really want Walcott this week and I don't want 4 outfield players missing a gw

Also have to get rid of djouoru to get in walcott.. which isn't really necessary for me atm as I can play Evatt Kelly Huth .. Rjohnson has a missing fixture which is super annoying, so I might go for Jose Enrique/Simpson as Toon have a double and decent fix gw 28 on

          Berbs > Odem.

          Bold one week punt.

I'd lose 0.3 on Berbs, but I'm 99% sure Odem will outscore him this week. Thinking about that one. Either that or Yaya > Barton and play him ahead of Berbs.

Djourou > Johnson seems one transfer I'm almost nailed on to make. Johnson is valuable for Brum's double gameweeks coming up. Blank in 28 is annoying, but I'm planning Fabs > Cahill so it shouldn't be a big issue.

I don't think Odem is just a 1 week punt, teams getting a new manager usually enjoy a honeymoon period and odemwingie is clearly their best forward...

            I currently have pencilled in

            1. Yaya/VDV to Walcott
            2. Djouoru to Jose Enrique/RJohnson

            suggestions?

I really don't think Ars/Spurs will be rescheduled in time for gw 28.. and Yaya has a decent fixture GW 28 too..

Moreover, are you benching Tevez this week? Its not totally crazy imo, City will play for the 0-0 as usual

DGW makes it easier to bench him, but you can always expect a goal from Tevez! will risk benching him

Odem, RJ, and Fabs worth 8 points. 6 home games vs 3 and rooney not likely to burn you getting rid facing City. Id do it, and thats the first time Ive justified an 8 point hit in my head.
